I am trying to download Ubuntu on my HP Pavilion because it says I need a "boot device" so I want to put ubuntu as my set OS and when I get to the menu I press enter for installation. So I when I try to do it, it comes to a black screen and it has all this stuff about timers and what not.
Then it says: "Kernel panic - not syncing: IO-APIC + Timer doesn't work! Try booting with the 'noapic' option."
I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
I have installed Windows 7 on one drive (300gb). I have another 300gb drive available on which I want to install ubuntu 9.10.
There are many dual boot things on google but I can't figure out which would work for me. Some say they work for 9.04 but not for 9.10.
Should I unplug the Win drive, and then install Ubuntu? If I do so I am not sure I can deal with the Grub thing.

While I was on it, everything froze so I restarted, but when I restarted, the window to install Ubuntu from flash drive, or run it from flash drive, etc popped up even though I had already installed it. I chose to install it, but it wouldn't work. I tried to turn the computer on without the flash drive in, but it said to insert system disk, etc. I went into the Advanced BIOS and it was already set to first boot from harddrive.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to install Ubuntu 10.04 onto my 8GB flash drive using these instructions. I've run the install and installed GRUB2 and 10.04. However, selecting 10.04 on GRUB doesn't work.
On the instructions, it says this:

I am trying to install ubuntu from an ISO on a FAAT32 Partition. Is there a way of booting into the FAT32 partition with the ISO on it, and mount it to install from, from the Debian installer ?I have been searching for over a month now and still have not found anything that gives some information on how to do that. I remember that i was able to make a rescue disk for Fedora 5 and use the installer from it and select the partition and then the iso i wanted to use.

I followed the instruction on the download page and transferred the ISO to usb drive. but when I restart the mac, holding option, I can not see option of boot with usb drive. there is only one option that is boot with my hard drive. my macbook is almost three years old, but I am sure the usb should work, since I have installed MAC OS using usb drive.

However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?
I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.
I looked around on these forums and google and came to no solution so, I decided to make this thread. I'm using Windows XP and after I downloaded and tested out Ubuntu 9.10, I decided I'd like it as a second OS, can I install Ubuntu on my external hard drive (1TB)? would installing on an external hard drive take away the risks of losing data etc? If I installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive would it delete any files already on my hard drive?

I'm about to reformat the middle primary partition and would like to take this opportunity of trying Ubuntu using the middle primary partition.
I'm using GAG to switch from one partition to another.
Is there any reason why trying Ubuntu in the middle partition would cause problems.
I think I read that Ubuntu can mess up the MBR.
I have an netbook, a small Asus Eee PC model 1001 PX running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. It don't have an optical drive so I wish to make an bootable installation disk with an USB flash drive. I followed the guide on Ubuntus homepage [URL] How to make an USB drive). But it did not work. I have an standard 4 GB USB flash drive which is plugged in. I have formatted it to FAT. And it is now empty.I went to System > Administration -> opened 'Startup Disk Creator'.
I pushed in all the options. But then the system asked for a password. No worries, I thought. It must be my own. But it was not. So my problem is that I am missing a password in order to authorized the installation of Ubuntu 11.04 on the USB drive. what are A. the proper search phrase for it? and B.
Listed are the steps and the issue:
1. Downloaded the Fedora-11-i386-DVD.iso in windows m/c
2. Used the liveusb-creator
3. Plugged the USB drive in the m/c where the Fedora needs to be installed. (This m/c does not have an OS)
4. The BIOS sensed the drive.
5. Selected the installation option from the menu
6. Proceeded with the installation steps and created the partitions
7. Got the error:
"Missing ISO 9660 image The installer has tried to mount image #1, ..."
I have been playing around with Linux Fedora 14 for a while but would like to expand my skills. I am running Fedora 14 on a usb drive connected to my laptop via an e-sata connection. I have approx. 165 gig of space on the drive at present and I would like to dual-boot with Suse 11.3. I have set-up my bios to boot via my usb hard drive. If possible I would like to show my available o/s when I boot my fedora setup. I am probably not explaining this very well but basically I want to be able to run the 2 linux o/s from my usb drive.

I can not repair with the windows cd, I can not do anything in Windows recovery no format, no fixboot, no chkdsk, no anything, it tells me there is no valid drive when I am in dir C:. In Ubuntu live CD I can see all the files are there on the local disk. What do I need to do to fix this
View 9 Replies View RelatedThe default (graphical) installer did not work on my PC (i7 quadcore 8 GB DDR3). I have installed Ubuntu using the alternative installer (Desktop, 64 bit) on my external USB drive. I installed grub on the MBR of the second drive (/dev/sdb) as I did not want to touch my (first) Windows disk. After reboot (chosing the USB drive as boot device, else Windows is booted) grub reports an error and enters the rescue mode. I tried all possible combinations of "root=(hdX,Y)" in grub.cfg to no avail.
I repeated the whole procedure but now disconnected the internal HD with Windows. Installation went smooth again (Windows disk was not seen this time), but after reboot (the internal drive connected or not) I again get (slightly different this time) grub error: can not find file.
I am currently using windows xp, but I have acquired another hard drive and wish to install ubuntu to it, unfortunately i do not have a working cd drive. I have loaded the newest iso in daemon tools and it asks me if i want to install it in windows, or restart my computer to do a full install. i wish to do neither. i want to install a full copy to my other drive with the virtual cd drive. I have found alot of help dealing with installing it on the same drive as windows or something that would require a floppy drive. this task seems like it would be alot simpler than installing on the same drive, buy maybe not. Did i miss a tutorial somewhere?

I would like to install Edubuntu 10.10 on this ancient Toshiba with Windows XP on it. The situation is a little complicated since I have no stable internet connection (I can not download Edubuntu once more). Now I realised that the DVD-Drive is broken and I can not boot from DVD to install Edubuntu. I have, however, an external USB-Drive, but there is no Boot-Option from USB (Phoenix Bios V. 1.3). So now I figured different options:
I could update my PhoenixBios to have a USB-Boot-Support. I have a HP Compaq 6710b notebook with W7 on it. I want to use Ubuntu for hobby activities, but as this is a company notebook, W7 should remain intact. I decided to install Ubuntu to an external drive.I set BIOS boot order to CD-USB-HDD.I attached a 2.5" 250GB WD Passport usb hard disk and installed Ubuntu to it from the CD.As a result, the clean install doesn't boot, I get a mere grub console (normal, not rescue).
Examining the situation I learned, that during Live CD session the inner hdd is hd0 and usb drive is hd1. Grub.cfg gets compiled to use /dev/sdb.When booting from usb drive, BIOS makes it to be hd0 and inner hdd becomes hd1 so grub tries to load kernel from W7 partition (and can't find it, I wonder why? )How to fix problem? Although grub.cfg is supposed not to be edited, may I change every sdb to sda in it?
I tried doing a search and couldn't find anything relatively recent on the topic so here is my question.
I am fairly new to the linux world and am in the process of trying out a couple different distributions. I am doing this by installing them to an external hard drive. This allows me to test them out without affecting my main system in any way. I have already tried openSUSE and it installed with no problems. I am trying to install Ubuntu, however when the installation tries to install GRUB2 it fails asking me for a different location to install it to.
When installing I unhook all drives from the computer except for the dvd drive, usb drive I'm installing from, and the external hard drive I am trying to install Ubuntu to. I'm not sure what else may be of use.
I am trying to install Debian from a USB stick (which was prepared by unetbootin). The installer / kernel loads, and setup runs fine until It searches for a CD-ROM drive. My computer doesn't have a CD-ROM drive, but the net install ISO has been burned onto my USB stick. Is there some way that I can mount my USB stick as the cd-rom drive? it's of type FAT32 if it matters.

What I would like to do is:- install Open Suse on the same drive, sharing the same swap, boot section but splitting or resizing the home partition, can this be done? I installed Fedora by booting up from a disc, plugging in my usb hard drive and then installing to that. Would I follow the same procedure for my 2nd installation, I think so but am open to correction. My laptop bios supports booting from disc and I have some 204 gig of free home space.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

update-grub
and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my laptop and got a new plug and play device that wasnt being read so I went to go and install windows onto my laptop and when I get to the screen to select my partition it says its unreadable or its not detected but when I restart it it works fine in loading ubuntu.

I'm trying to create a new VM with Debian 7.6. I downloaded the 3 install iso discs and tried to install. When I begin the installation it seems to take control of the CDROM and I am no longer able to eject it by either pressing the eject button or trying to eject through Windows. The installation goes fine until it asks if I have any other discs to install (which I do ... I have 2 more). At this point I say "Yes" but I cannot get the CDROM to open up at all since it doesn't automatically eject for another disc and as I mentioned before ... I can't do it manually or in Windows.
- I cannot do an installation over the internet because this is a government computer which is requires to be hooked to a government network. There are certain certificates required to access the network which are not available to my newly made (or in the process of making) Linux system but rather only to my host Windows system.
- I cannot use a newer version of VirtualBox because that opens up a whole new set of issues dealing with WinVerifyTrust getting CERT_E_REVOCATION_FAILURE most likely due to our symantec security software.
So my Storage Settings in VirtualBox are as follows for my CDROM drive:
- Controller: IDE Controller
- Type: PIIX4
- "Use Host I/O Cache" is checked
- Host Drive D:
- CD/DVD Drive: IDE Secondary Master
- "Passthrough" is checked
I cannot install the Debian 7.6 OS because I cannot eject each disc and put in the next disc. The only way I can eject the disc is if I reboot my entire system (host windows system) which obviously leaves me at an unfinished point in my install and therefore I have to restart the install and end up right where I was 30 minutes earlier.
I wan trying to install Debain on a 4GB USB drive while running the setting something happened with my pc and i had to restart it.I try to boot from the USB drive it worked but was giving a empty cursor. the installation did not continue.i open the USB drive in my pc now but it shows just 300 MB space and lost the 3.7 GB space.I think space of USB drive with that partition, can i recover my USB drive lost partition space ?
