Ubuntu Installation :: Incorrect Resolution After Update From Beta?
Nov 24, 2010
I was running Ubuntu 10.10 Beta and everything worked great. I upgraded one time and now my screen resolution is wrong. I have tried many things, but I would like to start troubleshooting from scratch.
The computer is a Dell Inspiron 537 Desktop. It is using 1024x768 resolution, when it should be using 1280x1024.
Code:
$ lspci -v
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset DRAM Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Dell Device 02e1
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0

I recently ran the update manager on my Ubuntu 11.04 box then shutdown and went to bed. When I booted the pc back up the next day my resolution is stuck at 1024x768 when I normally run at 1366x768.
I'm using the default open source drivers since the AMD ones are useless with my hardware (specs in the signature) I've tried changing the resolution through the "monitors" GUI and directly through xrandr.
xrandr output:
Code:
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1024 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
DisplayPort-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

Everything has been fine until tonight - updates have always ran ok. Automatic update screen appeared tonight so ran it as usual.
Now the keyboard layout is all wrong, ie backspace key puts a 5 in rather than go back a space, enter key puts / and spacebar moves 2 spaces also numbers on the right are not correct despite number lock on as usual. What happened to the settings and how can reset keyboard settings.

The past few days, my
Code:
sudo apt-get update
commands have resulted in TWO problematic connections which have terminated my complete update cycle (aliased update, dist-upgrade and autoclean).
Until a few days ago, this full alias worked, but now terminates after update because of:

If I install beta 12 via PPA, will it eventually update to RC, then final automatically? Is it better to download Firefox 4 from the website and install it that way? I use both Maverick and Lucid on my machines.

I have just installed ubuntu 10.04 32 bit on my girlfriend's computer. She has a NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 video adapter and I am having trouble getting the restricted driver working. First I tried it by the books through the Restricted Drivers assistant under Administration. This was successful but on reboot both the boot screen and the desktop environment were at 640x480. No adjustment using the NVIDIA tools was possible. It said that the monitor was unknown. It is a Fujitsu Siemens D-19.1 monitor. I believe however the problem lies with the graphics adapter because I remember it being identified correctly at some point of the ordeal.
Next I followed a tutorial and removed all of my NVIDIA packages from the computer. I still have my graphical environment though. After downloading the appropriate (Newer version than that in the Ubuntu repo) driver from the NVIDIA website I entered
Quote:
It says that the installation has failed. I can supply log files of the failure.

So here's the schedule for 10.04:
April 8th, 2010 - Beta 2 release;
April 22nd, 2010 - Release Candidate;
April 29th, 2010 - Final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
If I have 10.04 beta 1, could I just continue to update and not have to burn another disk to install? Or do I have to burn the beta 2 and reinstall if I want it?

Does anyone know where to manually set screen resolution in the new 10.4 beta? Used to be in xorg.conf, but it appears that it doesn't exist in this release.

How do I change the resolution in skype 2.1 beta on ubuntu 9.10?? At the moment my webcams resolution appears to be half the size of what it should be which is creating a double vision/image of me and I can only see about half of my head vertically. My resolution should be 640X480, but it clearly is not. It looks way smaller like 320X240.

I know there are a lot of threads out there for same or similar issues, but nothing I found was working for me until, by sheer chance, I found this very simple solution on the Fedora forums. Too elegant not to share.Environment:Ubuntu 10.10nVidia GeForce 5500Samsung SyncMaster 225BWUsing DVI cable (in case it matters)Issue:After installing the proprietary nVidia drivers, the screen resolution was no longer the correct native resolution of the display. In my case specifically, the nVidia X Server Settings utility was detecting the maximum supported screen resolution was 1280x1024 while my display's native resolution is 1680x1050.Solution:Open a Terminal window.Make a backup copy of the original xorg.conf file. This is just good form any time you are making config file customizations.
Code:
sudo cp -p /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf_backup
Open 'xorg.conf' in a text editor.

I recently got a computer and installed the ubuntu 10.04 beta on it. I'm having issues getting my monitor to display at the correct resolution. It should be displaying at 1440x900, but the highest resolution I can select from the displays configuration panel is 1366x768, which is not even the correct aspect ratio.

00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset 2 port SATA IDE Controller (rev 06)
This is the whole thing, in case it helps.
From what I have read, this is a brand new chipset with the GPU built into the main CPU, as if it were another CPU core. Is there a driver for this yet, or do I have to deal with an improper resolution?

I tried the new flash 10.2 beta in the hopes that they actually improved things, but it doesn't seem like they have.
1) Video's still seem to go to the 0,0 position with multiple monitors. Always the left screen.
2) Clicking on the non-fullscreen monitor still causes the fullscreen to exit.
3) My video is still offset and shifted on players like ....., probably due to screen resolution.

Having been using squeeze on my primary system for some time, I decided to install it on my media center PC. After doing a clean install I lost sound (another post) and my maximum video resolution dropped to 1280x1024. I was previously getting 1920x1080 (native) resolution under lenny on this box. So it's a mystery to me why I'm not getting that now. As you can see, the nvidia module is loaded:
# lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia 9821382 0
i2c_core 12570 2 i2c_piix4,nvidia
PS--This was installed the "debian way" via module assistant.

I am using 10.10 64bit with a Nvidia GeForce Graphic Card on my Acer 5741G 434 Notebook.
I have always used Compiz and without it I can barely use my Notebook. Apparently I had to install the Nvidia accelerated 3d Drivers (current version) in order to use Compiz.
However I cannot enable the "normal" visual effects (right click on desktop / change bakcground/ visual effects) that are necessary for using compiz.
Also everytime I reboot my resolution goes back to 800x600 although I saved the resolution to 1366. So everytime I start my Notebook I have to go to the Nvidia X server settings and set the resolution to 1366.
What I tried until now:
- I tried to reinstall Ubuntu twice!
- I tried to unistall all nvidia Drivers and install through the terminal using the command "sh" the nvidia drivers i downloaded from their website
- I tried to use the nouveau open source driver
Additional Information:
- when I boot a logo of the nvidia BETA driver appears
- for the past couple days I even experienced another problem: the windows do not have the minimize/close and maximize buttons
I am even willing to install the System again!
I had nothing but problems with the latest 10.10 ubuntu distribiution.

im a long time Ubuntu user that is giving Fedora a spin using Virtualbox on my Win7 machine. I have managed to get it up and running and guest additions working but have run into a problem with a few of the updates available in the Software Updates section.
It originally had around 75+ updates to install and seemed to do this fine. Unfortunately after a reboot and new check it comes up with 11 new updates. When I run install updates it gives me an error (see this post title) along with this bit of gibberish:
Code:
PackageKit = 0.4.6-8.fc11 is needed by package PackageKit-glib-0.4.6-8.fc11.i586
sane-backends = 1.0.19-15.fc11 is needed by package sane-backends-libs-1.0.19-15.fc11.i586
perl = 4:5.10.0-68.fc11 is needed by package 1:perl-Pod-Escapes-1.04-68.fc11.i586
gnome-media = 2.26.0-6.fc11 is needed by package gnome-media-libs-2.26.0-6.fc11.i586 : Success - empty transaction I have searched around on google and came across similar issues for folks but in most cases they were trying to do a system update that caused the issue. I am not (this is a fresh install tonight of 11). Most other cases also didnt seem to have quite so many items listed.

I am trying to use Skype beta on my acer aspire one with ubuntu 10.10. The video runs brilliantly and i can also here my wife from the other end but she cannot hear me. Apparently something is fishy with my mic input. I tried alsamixer and everything is in unmute. My alsa version is 1.0.23. The only think she hears is a loud hissing noise which is normally my bat voice but she doesnt need to know that. I can record my voice in the sound recorder but nothing comes out in Skype!

I have a LiveCD of the Lubuntu Lucid 10.04 Beta. First, I will say, I'm extremely impressed with Lubuntu. It's incredibly lightweight, pretty intuitive to use, and very pretty when compared to other distros of comparable weight (eg, MEPISLite, wattOS etc.) The only problem is that when I click "Install Lubuntu," NOTHING HAPPENS. Is it just because it's the Beta?

I'm trying to preseed a 10.04 install, and it's giving me a lot of trouble. I've been using [url] as a guide, but I can't seem to make it work.
I have ripped the x64 alternate install .iso to my hard drive, inserted the preseed files (details on this later) and remastered and burned the iso. When I put the disc into my test PC, it boots up to the CD, checks for English keyboard, enters my custom install option and then fails. It brings up a red screen that says, "Incorrect CD-ROM detected. The CD-ROM drive contains a CD which cannot be used for installation. Please insert a suitable CD to continue with the installation."
The way I've understood the documentation is that there are 2 files that needed edited, and one file that needs created: edit /isolinux/text.cfg, edit /isolinux/isolinux.cfg, and create /preseed.cfg
Here is what I currently have in those files:
Code:
Code:
Code:
The preseed.cfg is 95% copied from the ubuntu documentation, I've only made the changes that are necessary. I'll admit I do not know what most of the boot parameters in the /isolinux/text.cfg file mean.
