I'm a pretty new ubuntu user and I've just upgraded from 10.10. It seems to be working pretty well, except that I can't figure out how to connect to the Internet. When I click the wireless icon to try to connect, the drop down menu is as follows:

Wired network (grey/unclickable)
Disconnected (grey)
JackET N8 (grey)

Ubuntu Installation :: Loss Of Internet Connection After Upgrade From 8.04 To 8.10?

Feb 27, 2010

Loss of internet connection after upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 Like the title says, I lost my internet connection after upgrading my Ubuntu system from 8.04 to 8.10.I used the downloaded automated method. It appeared to work fine on its initial reboot into 8.10. But I noticed the internet icon indicated loss of connection. Even so, I was still able to browse the net through Firefox. But then when I rebooted the next day the opposite was true: the connection icon indicated connection, but Firefox would not actually connect, nor would update manager. It has been like this since. This is a dual boot machine, and the Windows XP Pro side still connects to the internet as usual, no problems. So how can I make my new 8.10 system connect to the internet?

I use a Motorola SB4200 cable modem

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade From CD Fails / Needs Internet Connection / Not Using Packages On Cd

Oct 11, 2010

I use the CD upgrade method to upgrade my kubuntu 10.04 to 10.10.Not to mention, the ISO image of the CD is this one :kubuntu-10.10-alternate-i386.iso.At the first run I choose YES for the prompt asking for internet connection or whatever, but I immediately realise that I have chosen a wrong option, so I exit and restart the upgrade all over again. On the second run, I choose NO for the prompt , then the installation continues until it reaches the 'fetching files' stage. It pops up and says "The upgrade has aborted. Please check your internet connection or installation media and try again. All files downloaded so far are kept."

I don't want to reinstall the whole system again because I want my applications;I don't want to use the updater to upgrade because I have a low internet speed .

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wireless Connection After Upgrade To 10.04?

May 5, 2010

NOTE: My upgrade wasn't smooth. Now everything is extremely slow. However if I boot from the disc to try without installing, the connection problem is still there. There is an exclamation mark on the connection applet, right clicking shows that Enable Wireless is unchecked and unclickable. I've included outputs of common network commands which might prove to be useful.

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: DSL Connection Won't Connect After Upgrade To 11.04?

Apr 29, 2011

Just updated to 11.04 Natty Narwhal on my Dell Inspiron 1501 this morning and I bumped into a problem. The DSL connection I used to connect to before the update doesn't work anymore. When I was running 10.10 I had this DSL connection set up via Network Manager (right-click on the network notification area=>edit connection=>add new, using PPPoE method and user name and pass from the ISP). Now I still get the AutoEth1 connection that is created (automatically), but when I try to connect to the DSL connection, it just doesn't connect. I tried deleting the connection and creating a new one, then rebooting, but still cannot connect. Another problem is that first time I ran 11.04, after beeing prompted to reboot at the end of the upgrade, I had my wireless on and while I was trying to get the DSL connection to work I switched it off (Fn+F2). Now if I try to turn it on again, it won't start. The network manager applet is looking also different now, wheter I left-click or right-click on it is the same (used to be different in previous releases), and this makes me even more confused.

I know I probably shouldn't have rushed into upgrading without getting aquainted with the changes and the possible issues, but to be honest I wouldn't want to downgrade now to 10.10 (unity looks kind of interesting and I am looking forward to see it improved in the future) and I really need to fix this DSL connection problem on my laptop (using my desktop now)

Since I upgrade to Ubuntu 10.04 my wireless connection is very unstable. I install the needed wireless drivers from 'Hardware Drivers' (Broadcom STA wireless driver) and I got wireless connection, but it randomly disconnect, and also connection is very slow.

I think that the problem are the drivers which are not very compatible with this version of Ubuntu, which means we need to wait for update? I have HP ProBook 4510s laptop, Intel PRO/Wireless 5100 AGN network card & Gembird NSW-R2 router. I'm only having this problem on Ubuntu 10.04, on other OS's the internet is fine.

Debian Configuration :: Wireless Won't Make Connection After Upgrade?

May 15, 2010

I have a Dell Mini 9 with a Broadcom wireless adapter. I've had it working for months on Debian Sid, but recently I updated the entire OS to get KDE 4.4 (I also went from a 2.6.30 to a 2.6.32 kernel). Something in that upgrade caused wireless to cease to work properly. The problem is similar to the one described in this thread, but no resolution is mentioned there: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50892 I've gone through all the steps to install the STA drivers/wl module for it, and it basically appears to be working. Using wicd, I can see all the wireless networks in the area.

The problem occurs when trying to connect. When I try to connect to my WPA wireless network, it eventually fails claiming a bad password. When I turned the wireless network into an unsecured network, it eventually fails claiming it's unable to get an IP. I've also tried at the command line with wpa_supplicant and it initially appears to work but in fact it hasn't. I've also got Kubuntu 10.04 installed on this machine, and it can connect without issue (using the proprietary driver that Ubuntu's hardware driver manager allows one to use).Does anyone know what has caused this? I even tried the earlier kernel, so that's not it.
