I'm running a dual-boot desktop with Ubuntu version 9.10 (32 bit) and Windows 7. How do I repartition my hard drive??? I just want to give a little more space to my Windows partition. Originally, I just partitioned during the Ubuntu installation.

View 9 Replies View RelatedInitially when I shrunk my NTFS Windows partition to install Fedora 11 I underestimated how much space I'd need for Fedora. Now that I'm using it as my primary operating system I have wasted space in the form of spare space on my NTFS partition. I was just wandering how safe it is to shrink this partition and move the free space to my /home partition using gparted on Linux? This would probably involve having to shift things towards the beginning of the drive as the Windows partition is at the beginning and the /home directory is at the end. Would I need to use a LiveCD to do this since it's meddling with an active operating system? I know I should back up the data, but is it quite safe to do it despite gparted in all likelihood having to move data from block to block across the drive?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI installed 10.04 or 10.10 on my laptop, which also has a 200 GB USB drive attached. Now, I am trying to go back and use the installer to repartition the disk. I noted that the scan of the external drive took about an hour, because I was on a webinar while it was happening. It would be nice if Installer noticed and asked if I really intended to sit by for an hour while an external drive was scanned.
When I went into the partitioner, there was another scan of several minutes, and then when I downsized a partition on the internal drive from 76G to 46G, there was yet another lengthy scan on the external drive. So, I know about this, and it's user error that I forgot to disconnect the drive, but it would still be nice if Ubuntu with some clue about what's most likely my intention, i.e. to NOT install on an external drive.
I would like to combine my Linux partition (/sda3) and /sad1 to give me more disc space. I would also like to combine the two unallocated partitions to install a Windows 7 dual-boot with Ubuntu. How would I do that without totally raping my current Ubuntu install?

I checked this out and it looks like my file system thing is 100% full. I have 64 GB space available according to the Disk Usage Analyzer. My files, etc are currently split between 2 partitions that were on my computer when I got it (Vista).
So how can I safely allocate more space to allow Ubuntu to update?

i have an 8gb sandisk micro sd card that i was having problems with, so i decided to zero it out, problem is now i can't repartition it.i have tried gparted, the disk won't appear, but when it is attached, i can see a /dev/sdb in devices that isn't there otherwise.is it possible to create a new partition table on this, and how?also i am trying to 'sudo mkfs.vfat /dev/sdb' but it is saying
View 5 Replies View RelatedBefore we begin just some general information, I'm running on a 64-bit HP Pavilion dv6; This laptop is something you would buy off of best buy's show floor. I installed Ubuntu through wubi in windows 7. I have a 500 GB Hard Drive. As of right now I can explore the windows 7 part of the hard drive.Now the problem began on Friday January 21st after I shrunk my Windows parition by 100GBS leaving around 370 GBS left in windows. Then I went into Ubuntu to try and format the 100GBS to create a space so I can share media in between windows and Ubuntu. ( At the time I didn't realise I could already go into the Windows Partition).
View 9 Replies View RelatedI wanted to update to the latest ubuntu but was short a couple of gigs in my linux partition. So i created a Gparted Live bootdisk and repartitioned my hard drive: i took 5 gigs from my mac os partition and moved it to the linux partition...
After that i could no longer see any boot option aside from Mac OS when starting the computer with the option key held down. So i thought maybe rEFIt might be the solution (i have no idea what i'm doing really) and installed refit. I'm not sure what that achieved - i can still only see one boot option (mac os - although it's now named 'refit'...)
I already had Windows 7 installed and decided to try out Ubuntu--just to, you know, mess around with stuff. During the partitioning part of the installation, I didn't pay attention as to how much space/volume I would shrink Windows down to, so I just went ahead and pressed forward with the default amount already on there (all of of the space went to Ubuntu, I'm thinking).
Now whenever I turn on my computer, I get a grub menu. On the list is Linux xxxx, Linux etc (blah blah blah), and then Windows 7 loader. It doesn't work, and suggests that I put in the Windows installation disc.

I'd like to keep the dual boot on Ubuntu and Windows 7 if that's possible.But since Ubuntu is already working, if it's easier to just delete Windows 7, I'd like to know how to do that, too.
I got a new laptop today (yay) with windows 7 on it. I want to keep a small windows partition, just in case I need it for something. Anyway, I know how to use fdisk, and am comfortable installing on a disk without data I need to maintain.. but this new computer came with 5 (!) windows partitions. I don't know where to start.
I don't mind reinstalling windows after partitioning if I have to, but I really don't want to screw up the recovery partition. Any clues on where to start or what to look for? Or what NOT to do?
It looks like "my computer" has two partitions listed (c: and d: ). I guess I could just take note of the size of these two partitions, free up the partitions that match in fdisk, then repartition that space and install everything.
I need to reboot to do that, so I'll edit with the information when I have it.

I upgraded to Lynx.When I plug in a USB drive, the drive icon no longer appears on my desktop.If I go to Places/Computer it shows up.And once I open it, the icon appears on the desktop.

At almost the end of the install, I see "running grub-install sda" or whatever it is. sda is my windows drive.So rather than asking where to install the bootloader or give you the option like it used to, it just did it to my "first" drive.
What the hell? Now my Windows MBR is gone. I like to maintain that so if my linux drive dies I can still boot into windows via the old windows boot loader.Possible to move Grub2 to my other drive and repair windows 7 drive MBR?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently scapped XP Pro on an old laptop (Toshiba Portege 7220)as it was so slow and I installed Ubuntu 9.10 - All installed ok and it worked fine for about a month. Last week I switched on, got the Ubuntu splash screen and thats where it stayed. I gave lappy to a friend of mine that knows about Pc's (hahaha). When I got it back he said he'd wiped the HDD and partially installed xp. The install apparantly hung after the reformat and copying files onto it.My problem now is I can't boot from HDD, Ubuntu Live CD or Windows CD - Laptop is set to boot from cd then hdd.When I try to boot from CD, the cd is read as I hear the drive being used also see light for cd flashing, after a while i get a blank screen with flashing cursor in top left corner and the cd stops.If I remove the HDD and put it in external usb caddy I can see the windows folders/files when plugged into my desk top.My questions are :-
1. Is there any way to make the drive reusable as a internal drive again as I know it works as an external drive.I would like to reinstall Ubuntu on it
2. Is it a fault with the laptop itself - how do I check
Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation
Second... If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
I just installed a Caviar Black 1TB drive, did a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10. I do not have access to the internet on this computer, and was wondering if there is a way to get my old settings/files off the old drive onto the new?
Since it is a new install on the 1TB disk, I have no MP3 codec, so I can't play my music...this is bugging me, so I would at least like to get that capability back.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI bought an 8GB flash drive because my D drive doesn't read DVDs. Anyway, my goal is to install Linux ubuntu and have it be my OS (replacing Windows XP). Last night I went to the Ubuntu homepage and downloaded the Ubuntu desktop edition 32-bit and put it on my flash drive. I followed the instructions on how to open and run it, but I was never asked about whether I want Linux to run side by side with Windows or if I want it to replace Windows. It downloaded the whole program, my computer restarted and then (on a black screen) it asked if I wanted to use Windows XP Home Edition or Linux Ubuntu. It's really frustrating because it took a while to download and install it in the first place AND to top that off, when I tried to use Ubuntu it went to a black screen and at the top said that there was an error. So I uninstalled all the ubuntu program and software and now I have a clean slate and want to try this again. I am a complete n00b. Could someone please walk me through how I can go about downloading (w/ links plz), installing and making ubuntu my ONLY OS on my computer via a flash drive? I'm desperate and I don't want to go through all of that and make the same mistake again!

I was not happy with the OS, so I reinstalled F10.Now I cannot get my CD-RW Drive or DVD Rom Drive to operate fully. I can open documents saved in a CD but I cannot get any sound from music discs.They were working in the first F10. The icons are showing in "Computer" and appear ok in the Bios. However, I recently purchased a second HDD for my computer, and was wondering how I could go about installing Debian on the second drive without messing with the windows drive? Right now I have Windows 7 installed on my 1TB drive, and would like to try and install Debian on my second (750GB) drive. Would it be possible to install Debian on the second drive, install grub on that drive's MBR so I could choose between Debian and Win7 without touching the MBR on the 1TB Windows drive?
I'm paranoid about messing up my Seven installation, but really want to be able to load into Debian as well.
Trying to install Fedora 12 using the 6 CDs. Trying to install on an older x86 box.Problem is that when detecting my hard drive, Fedora 12 recognizes it as a sda hard drive instead of hda hard drive. I have no SCSI connected to my computer what so ever. It's an old fashion PATA Western Digital hard drive.If I proceed with the install, Fedora 12 only installs 200MB of the OS from the first CD only. No options for additional software or anything.

Everything works great.This is approximately the steps I take: I reboot, everything is good. I reconnect my internal hard drive, boot to Windows, reboot back to Kubuntu, everything is still good. I run updates and follow the instructions of the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto. I reboot again, still no problems. At this point, I figure everything is OK and I have no worries. I boot to Windows and do some work in that environment. The next time I boot to the external Kubuntu hard drive, I get the following errors:

My original intention was to install a distribution of Ubuntu onto an external hard drive so i can use it on different computers. I first downloaded and burned a copy of Ubuntu 10.10 and booted my Acer laptop to it. I then plugged in my external hard drive and tried to install ubuntu onto it by partitioning the external hard drive. After I did that, I booted from the external hard drive on my laptop and it ran the new distribution i created. However, when I tried to boot it from a different computer it said something like "partition not found." So the next time I tried to install ubuntu onto the external hard drive with out partitioning it, using the entire drive. This is what started to cause problems.
Now when I start up my laptop without the external hard drive plugged in i get "error: no such device: xxxx..... grub rescue>. When I start it up with the hard drive plugged in a grub comes up with the new installation, my old ubuntu installation, and my old windows vista.
After lot's of research i still can't find any solution to my problem, that's why i'm posting a message here.So, it's been few days now that i'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10, with the live CD, but each time when i must choose where to install it or how to make partition, it just tell me there is no hard drive..(i have two 1 TB sata hard drive )So i tried many things, GParted doesn't find my hard drive either, they appear in the bios (i can run windows), try to uninstall a raid program that might hide the hard drive, but it didn't work either.
