Jan 12, 2011I am installing Ubuntu Server 10.10 on and old Dell Laptop. The network connection is an Xircom PCMCIA card.During install, the computer sees and interacts via the network just fine. For example, I can ping the gateway. Also, the command "lspcmcia" works and show the Xircom card.When I reboot, however, there is no network access, and the "lspcmcia" command is not there. When I try "lspcmcia" the OS helpfully tells me that I can "apt-get" pcmciautils, but, without network access, that fails.I tried adding the install cdrom to apt using "apt-cdrom" and then tried to "apt-get" pcmciautils and it got further, installing some dependencies, but acted like it still was unable to locate the pcmciautils package.

Mar 27, 2010I'm running Karmic Server with GRUB2 on a Dell XPS 420. Everything was running fine until I changed 2 BIOS settings in an attempt to make my Virtual Box guests run faster. I turned on SpeedStep and Virtualization, rebooted, and I was slapped in the face with a grub error 15. I can't, in my wildest dreams, imagine how these two settings could cause a problem for GRUB, but they have. To make matters worse, I've set my server up to use Luks encrypted LVMs on soft-RAID. From what I can gather, it seems my only hope is to reinstall GRUB. So, I've tried to follow the Live CD instructions outlined in the following article (adding the necessary steps to mount my RAID volumes and LVMs). [URL]
If I try mounting the root lvm as 'dev/vg-root' on /mnt and the boot partition as 'dev/md0' on /mnt/boot, when I try to run the command $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0, I get an errors: grub-setup: warn: Attempting to install GRUB to a partition instead of the MBR. This is a BAD idea. grub-setup: error: Embedding is not possible, but this is required when the root device is on a RAID array or LVM volume.
Somewhere in my troubleshooting, I also tried mounting the root lvm as 'dev/mapper/vg-root'. This results in the grub-install error: $sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/md0 Invalid device 'dev/md0'
Obviously, neither case fixes the problem. I've been searching and troubleshooting for several hours this evening, and I must have my system operational by Monday morning. That means if I don't have a solution by pretty early tomorrow morning...I'm screwed. A full rebuild will by my only option.

Oct 28, 2010I can create the USB HDD installation image and it starts perfectly, but when it tries to copy installation files it fails saying 'No CD in drive' or similar. Of course there is not CD in the drive as I'm trying to install via USB HDD.If I create a USB image based on the Live Desktop image it works perfectly.Is there anyway to get around this?Maybe a guide to installing Server via USB?

Dec 14, 2010I'm trying to intall Ubuntu 10.04 server 32-bit on an Acer Aspire One D255-1549 netbook. I want to use it as a low power web server I can leave on all the time. The install will not proceed because it cannot detect the NIC and then will not continue past the part were you have to specify the arhive mirror because it can't get on the internet. The install doesn't include the driver for my NIC (Atheros AR8152). Is there a way I can add the driver to the installation image?

May 5, 2011I'm trying to install Ubuntu 11.04 x64 Server onto a Shuttle XS35GT. The PC has no CD-ROM drive so I have to install via USB.
1. Copy the files to a USB-stick via UNetbootin (WinXP, OSX) or Universal-USB-Installer.exe (WinXP)
2. Boot to the USB-stick in order to install Ubuntu
3. The installer halts at "[!!] Detect and mount CD-ROM" - "Your installation CD-ROM couldn't be mounted. Try again to mount the CD-ROM? (Yes/No)"
4. Selecting either option does not help further the install
What I tried:
- Manually fix truncated filenames in /pool/l/linux/*.udeb (see [URL])
- Alt+F2, mount the .iso as a virtual CD-ROM under /media/iso (no use since the 11.04 installer does not allow manual chosing of the CD-ROM) (see [URL])
- Expert mode install (does not show anything special) (as suggested at [URL])
I had this exact same problem with 10.10 but someone was able to lend me a USB-CD-Drive that time.

Jun 19, 2011I am completely new to the world of all things linux. I have recently needed to build a linux server to host a Google box, so we decided to use old kit firstly a Dell 1400sc and a Dell poweredge 650. In both cases after the install we got a massage saying that it could not display output the lcd monitor.
I have searched on the web to resolve the issue, and some of the resolutions said to amend the something in the grub. However I have not been able to enter the Grub menu even after trying esc or shift.

Jul 12, 2011For whatever reason, I cannot for the life of me install server amd64 on my server machine. I have a quad-core phenom 1st gen. USB/CD/HD, it doesn't matter what media its from. It randomly freezes on unpacking or configuring, the steps after configuring the network. If I shutdown, I can sometimes get further, or sometimes its shorter. I can't have it connected to the internet when installing or it goes bonkers. I have tried most of the fixes suggested around the forums, to no avail.
Now here is the crazy thing, I installed Ubuntu 64 Desktop with no problems. So for now, I will continued to install desktop and using tasksel to change it to a server.Oh BTW, I just found out installing desktop works, but I have had this server install problem since Gutsy. The 32bit version installs just fine.

Jun 13, 2010I am trying to compile a new vanilla kernel on to my Ubuntu server system which has been freshly installed with Ubuntu 10.04 server 32bits. As this will run on a VIA epia-px5000eg mainboard with USB stick I want compile this kernel on a different machine on which is also ubuntu 10.04 installed. Unfortunately currently I experience difficulties when I boot kernel 2.6.34; it says "Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block" while if I load to original kernel that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 all works perfectly well. BTW reason I want to build a custom vanilla kernel is to trim down kernel to the necessary services I need as I am running a server that requires just the essentials. And it needs to support the VIA Epia CPU processor family ( C3, C7 or generic setting which is another hurdle which I won't discuss here ).
Hopefully one out there is able to guide me further as I type step by step what I executed. Thanks for your replies in advance:
Yet I hook up the VIA epia-px5000g with 2gb usb stick, a dvd drive and keyboard ( all usb ). Boot from CDrom and install a minimal system (<f4>) to usb stick. Partitioning part I set it to EXT4 and used full size thus no SWAP. Also mount option " noatime " has been set all to save writes to usb stick.
When the base system has been installed a user has been added, as well apt is being configured to install only security updates automatically. As services I want to run definitely openSSH-server so I can access remotely. Grub gets configured and system will be rebooted.
At this stage I configure the network interface to a static address so I do not need to check my router all the time which dhcp address Ubuntu is using if I want to access remotely.
Now the compile part starts, the ubuntu way. I log in to my other system and execute following commands accordingly code...

Aug 30, 2010I want to install Ubuntu Server distro. First i downloaded ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64.iso and "burned" it to my usb-pen using UltraIso software for windows. That booted from the usb, but just after punshing in the language etc it complains that it cant find the cdrom or something like that. then i try the [url], but that wont boot at all with this same iso mentioned above. and burn it to a darn CD. it boots, but somewhere during the process it stops and asks for the same cd that is actually in the drive already. there is a thread about this here: [url] I then wanted to find an easy iso that i could throw on my usb-pen and install the whole thing through ftp like i did in the old days with floppies. but man, i got lost in the documentation with no clear path on how to do it.

I'm asked to enter a network system name during install. I'm asked for a password, then repeat it during install. but never asks for a "UserName" during install. So, what is it? root? ubuntu? default? Nope, I've tried many many many of them, even admin, nothing works.

1. What is the biggest benefit of the DVD versus the CD ? Having more software on the disc right ? But how can I install additional SW without downloading ?
2. I want to install a Home Server from the DVD but I don't know how to select the server edition to install ? Do I still need to download the CD image for the server edition ? I want to be able to select one or more of the automatic server installation scripts e.g. LAMP.

i don't understand this message. when i downloaded Server there was no message to save a second file for a second CD.

Apr 21, 2011I'm trying to install 10.04 Server on an old Dell Poweredge 600SC I had lying around, and I'm having an issue with the installation. I can boot from the disk without any issues, I select a language for the installer, and I get to the main menu (Install Ubuntu Server, Check Disk for defects, Test Memory, etc). When I select Install Ubuntu Server, it waits a couple of seconds and then goes straight to a blank screen. No flashing cursor or anything.
I've tried some digging on the issue and another thread from a while back said to add "vga=771" to the installer line and when I did that, I got an error from my monitor itself complaining about an incompatible video mode.I know I'm not the only one who has had this issue, I just don't know how to address it. This is the first problem I've ever had on an installation.

Sep 23, 2010I have installed it from usb as the cd installation failed at the point where you decide which type of installation you want (lamp or samba, etc)the installation completed but when booting nothing happens, only a black screen with a blinking cursor. pressing the shift key or any other keys doesn't work.strangely when i boot from the usb flash drive again (and not from the hard drive) the server does boot and asks for the user name and password!i have chosen the guided lvm partition with 20% reserved for system files.my machine is an athlon xp 2GHz (32bit), 1GB, SATA hard drive, nvidia 6600 graphicsmy guess is that its a problem with grub and lvm.

Feb 15, 2011For some reason my disc I burned for ubuntu desktop 10.10 freezes when I get to the ubuntu logo with the 5 dots. I am able to install ubuntu server just fine.
I tried to install desktop on top of server using sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop and then whenever I reboot it freezes during startup.
I think it might be my swap partition. I recall seeing a blip of an error talking about "press C to skip or M to start maintenence" or something like that. It never stayed on the screen long enough for me to read it.

I figured out how to install the drivers but I can't seem to turn off the x server to install it. and i also tried sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop but it just says command not found. my gdm is in the usr/sbin directory idk if that has to be changed or not but i'm really new to this and I am completely lost.
Fedora Installation :: Install FC 12 Or 13 On An HP DL380 G6 Server
Jul 7, 2010I'm trying to install FC 12 or 13 on an HP DL380 G6 server. The problem occurs just after the image is loaded off of the DVD. After a bunch of boot messages scroll up the screen, a final message appears stating waiting for hardware to initialize. At that point, the video signal goes away and never comes back. I have to power cycle to regain control. If I select the option to do an install with a basic video driver, the installation proceeds beyond that message and I can finish the installation, however, my graphics resolution is 800x640 and I can't change it. Is there a reported compatibility problem with the HP server and FC? Is there something I can do so that I can get past the failure and be able to operate with a decent resolution?

Feb 5, 2010I was going to set up an ubuntu server, but ran into some issues. When I try to install ubuntu server 9.10, it immediately goes to a black screen with a blinking cursor as soon as I press enter on the menu. I've tried pressing F6 and editing options - noapic, nolapic, irqpoll, vga=[something...] and nothing worked. I then downloaded a standard ubuntu desktop cd, and the livecd works, and I can successfully start the install!
I've heard that I should probably use the server install if I want to use this as a server (which I do; webserver for a group of people, website, ftp, ssh.) I've also heard that it's possible to just install everything needed overtop of an ubuntu desktop base. What should I do? Are there other things I should try to make the server install work? Or is it not worth the effort, and I should just go with a desktop install and then work from there? tasksel? (It's a Dell XPS, the graphics card is NVIDIA Geforce 9800 GT).

Jun 18, 2010I want to create a file-server with Ubuntu and have two additional hard drives in a RAID 1 setup. Current Hardware: I purchased a RAID controller from [URL]... (Rosewill RC-201). I took an old machine with a 750GB hard drive (installed Ubuntu on this drive). I installed the Rosewill RAID card via PCI port. Connected two 1TB hard drives to the Rosewill raid card. Went into the RAID bios and configured it to RAID 1.
My Problem: When I boot into Ubuntu and go to the hard drive utility (I think that's what its called). I see the RAID controller present with two hard drives configured separately. I format and tried varies partition combination and at the end of the day I see two separate hard drives. Just for giggles, I also tried RAID 0 to see if they would combine the drives.
