Ubuntu Installation :: During Various Points In The CD Installation, It Would Crash

Jun 2, 2010

Here's the deal: I had a hard time with the 10.04 installation. This is my mom's 6-year-old Gateway E4000. During various points in the CD installation, it would crash, I'd get the error:

Code: Glib-Warning **: getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0) and then a row of white vertical lines would start blinking on a black background. And I was like, "What?"

But after combing the forums, I managed to get through the entire install by hitting F6 at the beginning and selecting acpi=off, noapic, and nomodeset, then install. Coolio!

But then, when I boot, the same thing happens. The Glib-warning is gone, but at any point during boot, or five minutes after it's booted successfully, or ten minutes, the screen will go blank and I'll get those white blinking lines of death. Also, for the entire installation and the first few boots, my top menu bar was totally effed. It was upside-down and pixelated. This seemed to fix itself.

Ubuntu Installation :: Machine Crash During Final Stage Of Installation?

May 17, 2010

I was clean installing Ubuntu 10.04, and for some reason my machine crashed during the final stages (has been a bit unstable recently), when running the init scripts I think. As a result I think that some programs are not being run properly. For example, cups is never running - I have to start it to use printers. And CDs dont mount automatically. Here are the services states:

Quote:
~ > service --status-all
[ ? ] acpi-support
[ ? ] acpid
[ ? ] alsa-mixer-save

[Code]...

What can I run to clean this up and get things to how they should be? Dont suggest re-installing - I have no time for that and it might crash at the same point.

Ubuntu Installation :: Manually Setting Partitions And Mount Points?

I have figured out manually setting the swap partition and setting "/" as the mount point for the primary partition during install. If during install, I want to create another partition to keep the OS separate from installed programs and such, to be able to do a clean install every 6 months and not loose everything (or anything) I have done prior.

I have a 64GB SSD which I want to use only for the boot files, and I have a 640GB which I want to place everything else on, as to preserve the life of the SSD. Ubuntu Installation :: (Rant) Can't Edit The Mount Points In The 11.04 Installer?

Sep 1, 2011

I'm fuming about this again after doing my third install of 11.04, this time on one of my laptops. Why was the ability to edit mount points taken away in the 11.04 "Allocate Drive Space" portion of the custom install? In earlier versions, you could choose a mount point in the file system from a drop down (i.e. mount this partition as /, or /home, or /opt, etc.). You could also enter your own location to suit your needs. This allowed me to do tricks like mount my home partition under /media/home, to prevent my settings being clobbered by the installer (later, after integrating the settings created by the installer with the settings in my home directory, I could edit fstab to mount the home partition in its rightful /home location). Or to put my windows partitions under /media/WinXP or put my old Linux parition under /media/oldlinux. I could do whatever I want. Now, I have limited options. I can only choose a location from the drop-down. I cannot edit it. Want to mount a partition under /media/home? Tough. Want to mount Window under /media? Nope. Can't. Instead, if I select an ntfs partition, I only get the choice of mounting it under /dos or /windows. WTF do I do if I have three windows partitions (like I do on my desktop)?

Listen, if I'm doing a custom install, and I know enough to partition my drive, don't you imagine I don't need the mount point option dumbed down for me? If I've gotten to this point, I obviously know what I'm doing (or, if I don't, I'm already screwed bcuase I'll probably nuke a partition that I want to keep)limiting my choices here is stupid. I know, I can clean this up afterwards by editing fstab or using some other tool but my question is, why should I have to? What's the logic in removing this options from the user?

Fedora Installation :: Partitioning / Mounting Points For SSD Optimization

Feb 23, 2011

I am building a new MiniITX system and partitioning/mounting points for SSD optimization. The majority of / will be on the SSD, but files that are written to often shouldn't be there as the high write operations will diminish the lifetime of the SSD. I will also have a 450G SATAIII drive where I believe that directories like /tmp and /home should be. I also like the idea of a RamDisk for browser/etc files

Intended system:

General :: Use Network Drives As Mount Points During Installation?

Apr 7, 2010

Is it possible to use network storage locations as mount points during installation?

cause i want to separate system (ubuntu) with data (personal files).

eg. if i have 5 computers i don't want to recreate /home/david 5 times.

so i want to mount networkdrive/home to /home in local ubuntu server.

so ALL users home folders could be used and maybe also networkdrive/projects to /projects.

in that way its ok if i by accident repartitioned the local ubuntu server cause all data is not there on that server, but in the data server.

is separating "data" from "logic" good in this case?

and is it possible? what protocol should i use for the mapping over internet? (maybe the server is in Sweden, and the data is in Norway).

As was with 10.04 which I had running perfectly in no time. But, as of date, 10.10 has been the worst. This time it simply crashed. After updating I ran 10.10 through some paces which looked OK. Then I went to settings manager, appearance, style, and tried a few new looks when after choosing a particular style the screen went black, and I wound up at my login. After I logged in it simply went black again, and back to login.

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 / Can't Get Updates / Getting 'crash Errors'

Jan 10, 2010

1 month ago we bought this computer. It has a GS7610 motherboard, AMd Athlon 3000+ with 2 gig ram, Seagate 500Gb HD and that's it.

I installed 9.10 64 bit, and all was flawless. Worked straight away, no troubles at all.

Then it was telling me the HS had bad sectors, so we took it back to the store today, and they said there was no problem. They also said that the vertical fuzzy lines were an OS problem, when we thought it was a monitor problem.

They also said that installing Windows would solve the problems.

Ok, so I went through the motions of trying to install a proper copy of Win7 pro I have here, and that went ok, albeit annoying

So, back to Ubuntu and did a full, clean re-install of 9.10 64 bit from the same CD I originally used that worked perfectly.

All installed, and I am hitting serious troubles.

There is a network connection, and I can ping anywhere with a small packet. Anything bigger, no go. I can bring up google, but no further. I can't bring up Ubuntu.com. I can't get updates, so even if they would correct the problem, it doesn't matter because I can't get them into the box.

It can download some updates, then finds one that it can't swallow and just locks up. I am also getting 'crash errors' that aren't a good thing.

It worked just fine, and now it's not.

I have searched and re-installed for the past 8 hours straight and still nothing.

I have this here box running 8.04 that just keeps ticking flawlessly, so it's not an update issue. I am here, so it's not a network or internet issue. Win7 got the internet just fine (sans sound).

I am almost willing to just accept Win7 without sound because at least it's something more than a non-updatable Ubuntu.

(And FWIW, you name anything that has been already said to fix the problem, I have already tried it at least twice already...)

Just re-installed for maybe the tenth time, and this time, for whatever reason, it is working just the way it was originally, and it even has the static on the screen going flat out, which I would really like to know how to solve...

Even got it dual booting with Win7 without effort.

Ubuntu Installation :: Crash During 2.6.31-20 Kernel Update

Mar 8, 2010

Running Karmic on my laptop, I get very occasional kernel panics (suspect it has something to do with the Broadcom WiFi because it only seems to happen with heavy network traffic or HDD access), but just my lucky, this time it Panic'd on me during my recent update -> linux-kernel 2.6.31-20. My system still 'works', but I get the following when doing any other updates, now:

Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
[sudo] password for tango:
Setting up linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic (2.6.31-20.57) ...

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-image-generic:
linux-image-generic depends on linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic; however:
Package linux-image-2.6.31-20-generic is not configured yet.
dpkg: error processing linux-image-generic (--configure):

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of linux-generic:

dpkg: error processing linux-generic (--configure):

Now I cannot seem to get rid of that, and of course, I am stuck in the prior version. Granted everything 'works' - but it bothers me. What's the best way to go about tracking down and hashing out a problem like this?

This happened occasionally under Lucid Ubuntu, but don't recall it happening when I was using Karmic Ubuntu.

It doesn't exactly fill me with confidence, and might even goad me to dig out my old Karmic boot disc. Say it ain't so!

My laptop is an eMachines (acer) E625. But I doubt it is related to the hardware.
