Ubuntu Installation :: Clean 10.4 Reinstall In Dual Boot With XP?

I had a 100% XP machine, installed 9.10 into a dual boot a while ago, and eventually upgraded to 10.4 LTS.
Current partitions
/dev/sda1 ntfs
/dev/sda2 extended
---- /dev/sda5 ext4
---- /dev/sda6 linux-swap
Currently, dual boot is working and both OSes are working as expected (although there's that bit of inconsistency with intel 845 graphics). I want to do two things in a major re-install: move Home to a new, separate partition, and do a clean 10.4 install while still retaining XP dual boot. If possible leave sda1 untouched, but that can be reinstalled if necessary.
Only things in Home that need to be moved are documents and mozilla seamonkey prefs and emails. Those items I can save and restore manually, so I have no problems with backup needed files, then clean install, then manually restore.
I know enough to be willing to try suggestions, but also know enough to recognize I can get into trouble. So that's why I'm asking here first.

I installed Windows 7 and then Ubuntu 10.10 64 bits. The Ubuntu installation went fine but when rebooting a "check disk" appeared and since then my PC keeps booting directly on Windows. I tried all the GRUB reinstallation methods of the GRUB2 Community Documentation with the live CD but none worked.

I have done some commands in ubuntu 11.04 and got problems, thinking of reinstall it. (laptop acer 5738zg)
Previously when i have dual booted win7 and ubuntu10 and linux mint i always get "grub rescue" when i try reinstall my linux partition, and it ends with i have to do clean reinstall of both windows and linux, which is a major pain in the rectum area
Is there a way to make my linux go back to original state without reinstall, and if i reinstall, how can I do this without loosing win7 partition and get this awful grub rescue message.

I have pc containing 80 GB Hard Disc with 1 GB RAM. I am using 60 GB for windows and 20 Gb for Fedora 12. Recently i formatted the pc and reinstalled both. I installed windows 7 instead of Windows XP i am using earlier. Now i do not like windows 7. My system became very slow. perhaps as my pc is five years old and motherbord configuration may not be matching. Now i want to revert to windows XP. I do not know any method by which i can retain fedora 12 and change from windows 7 to XP. Earlier i formatted complete hard disc and installed fedora 12 (myself) after windows 7 (by professional). but now i do not want to reinstall fedora 12. It will lose all upgradation and installed packages.

I need to reinstall Ubuntu 10.10 on my PC. Previously (first time installation), was from Ubuntu Desktop LiveCD using USB. I installed Ubuntu on different drive. I didn't make any swap-drive before (I just know about it). Also, I upgraded to Ubuntu Studio manually from terminal. It was my first time, and i did a quite little mess with my current installation during the course of learning sudo and setting up for audio related works.
The problem I have now,
1. No sound from the speaker (after replacing ALSA with OSS4, which was success, and trying to get back to ALSA, which was not)
2. I missed that speaker icon on default setting of Ubuntu Studio Desktop theme. It supposed to be on top-right of the panel. That icon also contains sub-menu to "Rhythmbox" and "Volume Setting".
3. I think I made a lot of sudo apt-get install and compiling from tar, I think I downloaded many unnecessary dependency files, which I'm not using it.
4. I downloaded and install complete Ubuntu Studio audio/video/graphic package. After trying all the stuff inside, I found out that i didn't need all of them. I decide to remove the package and just get necessary software that I need to use. However, I failed to remove the package using "sudo apt-get remove ubuntustudio-etc" I can't remember what I did during the course of sudo-ing things.
I just want a fresh new install of Ubuntu Desktop, and build from grown up again, and keep the Ubuntu Studio desktop theme on top of it. I did made a little Google and find out about GParted and Super Grub Disk. What I had in mind is,
1. boot to Gparted using USB,
2. delete/clean the drive where I installed Ubuntu
3. reboot to Super Grub Disk from other USB, to fix mbr things,
4. reboot to Windows,
5. reformat the drive I've installed Ubuntu before
6. re-install fresh copy of Ubuntu again.
However I failed to boot to Gparted as per instruction on their website. I did try clicking the makeboot.bat from the USB while I was on Windows, and I still got boot error. I don't know how to Gparted from Ubuntu. I had the Gparted package installed but I get this line :

If there is a better way to do this, rather than going through GParted and SGD to fix mbr. Again, it was my first time on Ubuntu, I just want a fresh new install of Ubuntu Desktop, and build from grown up again and keep the Ubuntu Studio desktop theme on top of it.

My old-ish Dell laptop is currently running Windows 2000 and Ubuntu 9.10. I originally installed 2000 to try and squeeze a bit more performance out of the laptop for general use, but in practise Ubuntu is running great and sees far more use than the Win2K installation so I've decided to create a stripped-down (i.e. non-networked) XP installation purely to run a few favourite audio applications.
I plan to do a fresh Windows install and wipe the current C: partition. Is there anything I should be aware of in terms of the GRUB bootloader. Will it simply recognise the new XP installation? Obviously I will back up my data before I continue, but are there any other precautions to take with respect to dual-booting? I could do without having to reinstall Ubuntu too!

I installed Ubuntu a while ago now and I like it but when I installed it I removed windows and now its starting to annoy me. I cannot sync my ipod touch, I can't play some of my games because they are all meant for windows and wine does not work for then so what I want to do is uninstall ubuntu and reinstall windows xp, then I will reinstall ubuntu and this time around I will make a dual boot. Only one problem, I don't know how to uninstall ubuntu.

I need windows because iscan under Ubuntu does not work well. So I have a dual boot. Trouble is that windows is only good for a month because I can't validate it because I have it on another machine also.
So, my month is up and I can not longer access windows. I could do a complete wipe and reinstall windows and then put Ubuntu next to it but that is a lot of work. Can I just reinstall windows and get my boot loader to operate properly again? Or is it actually easier to do a total wipe out and reinstall? I have tried to restore grub before and I failed miserably.

On my Ubuntu 10.04.1, the ethernet doesn't work for my dual boot (Windows Vista) machine. I can run Ubuntu 10.04.2 from a USB flash drive & would like to install it over the non working 10.04.1.
My Ubuntu is on my dev/sda6 partition (I think the swap is on sda7) but when I try to install on that partition I get a question about the root.
How do I install Ubuntu on that partition without messing up my Vista. (I did it wrong on my netbook & had to rebuild the whole computer). I think I can delete partitions, expand vista to take all the free space & then reinstall Ubuntu "side by side" but that seems like the hard way.
I don't know how to select the correct options to reinstall Ubuntu without changing the partitions.

i have a dual-boot system running with Fedora 11 and (formerly) windows XP. The windows xp has become unbootable, and i installed Fedora on a separate partition so i could run the computer. is there a way i can reinstall windows XP to the other partition using Fedora 11?
Note: The reason i installed fedora Is because i dont have a Windows XP Boot cd, and i believe there is a backup somewhere on the hard drive.

I would like to try to reinstall a barebones xp on a compac laptop as a dual boot with 11.1. I repartitioned using gparted so I now have 20 Gb free. Here (I hope) is the output of fdisk -lu [URL] I spent a lot of time setting up opensuse and don't want to lose the settings, etc. Should I repartition with the 20G space "in front" of the linux partitions? Can I back up the linux settings so I can reinstall them if I lose everything? Is there a sort of windows emulator (wine?) that will run programs that won't run on opensuse, like netflix, tax prep software, etc? Too many questions I know but I would like a fairly simple foolproof fix if possible.

I'm trying to get Samba running, but I accidentally deleted smb.conf. I tried reinstalling Samba through apt-get, but it does not create another smb.conf (which it did when I first installed it). I'm pretty new to ubuntu, and I'm just wondering if anybody knows how to get a completely clean install.

I uninstalled Chromium including config files through synaptic, but then after doing a file search, I found lots of Chromium and Chrome files laying around. So then I used that search list to delete them, but I believe there are still Chromium/Chrome files somewhere on my Ubuntu 9.10.To regress a bit and for a little background on this problem, I wanted to uninstall Chromium because I want to see if I can correct this problem that I have with the browsing history file. I want the browse history feature to work and it doesn't - the archive has all of the activity from only one day in history, 8 Apr 2010, and when I try to delete that day of history, it says that is has been deleted, but it is still there, and it won't record any of my browse history.
So I thought if I could do a clean install from scratch, maybe I could get the history feature back.Anybody know where I can find the file containing the history files and/or tell me how to clean reinstall of Chromium?

I did a fresh install of SuSE 11.4 (WIN7 TOO) and changed my Larger HD1 to the first HD. I was installing and got this error first: the boot loader is installed on a partition that does not lie entirely below 128GB The system might not boot if BIOS supports only lba24 (result is error during install grub mbr) status loc dev/sdb6
I continued with the install and then got:

I just install Ubuntu on a new computer I got, and set up LAMP. I started poking around in MySQL (more than I should have) and managed to break it. I've been trying to fix it, but I can't. I've done apt-get --purge mysql-client, but when I reinstall it it's the same thing. How can I reinstall MySQL (and PHPmyadmin) from a completely clean slate? (There's no important data on there)

few months back I did a clean install of 9.10 from 9.04 (wanted to clear room so decided against upgrade path) and since then I've been really struggling to boot into it. I've used Ubuntu since 7.04 and never had any issues with it - these issues have only started happening since my upgrade to 9.10. And I was hoping that 9.10 would be the release I could persuade her indoors to not boot into Windows XP!
Anyway my problem is that when I choose Ubuntu 9.10 from the boot list it gets to the point where the Ubuntu symbol is splashed up (with the brown background and the light shining on it) and then the little progress bar underneath freezes and the whole box freezes. It doesn't respond to any keypresses like the "magic" ones and I have mashed CTRL ALT F1 plus others keys repeatedly. Caps lock doesn't respond either so looks like completely frozen, though worth noting that the hard drive still sounds like it's spinning.
I've tried with every boot command under the sun (noapci, nosplash, quiet, noapic etc.) and none of them make any difference bar two - apci=noirq starts the desktop occasionally but with no windows manager, and irqpoll stops the freeze but it never loads the desktop or manager. Both these last two commands work about 1 in 10 boots or so but usually it freezes. I can also sometimes press Escape as soon as the Ubuntu symbol shows on screen and sometimes (about 1 in 5 tries) it gets into the desktop, but only if I hit it before it freezes up. The above does point to an IRQ issue but wondering what has changed since 8.10 and 9.04 which worked perfectly?
I've also booted into recovery mode and updated/fixed packages but the same thing happens with the recent 2.6.31-19 generic as well as -17, -14 etc. As per above I'm dual booting with Windows XP as the default boot option (wife's orders) but don't think this is related.

I was having some troubles installing windows 7 (install hang with no solution) and decided Ubuntu might be a decent route to install windows, or maybe I'd be satisfied and stay with Ubuntu. Downloaded the official version of 11.04 AMD64, burnt the iso to DVD using windows, and went through the installation process (Having already formatted the drive), only to find that once I removed the installation media, as prompted, I was greeted with a blinking cursor in the top left corner. There were no errors during the installation and I can boot using the liveCD no problem. I am installing this on a 2.8ghz i7 processor, 8GB of DDR3, and installing it on a 120GB SSD.

A friend of mine asked me to install ubuntu on his system as he finally got enough of all the flaws and problems in his vista. I said no problems ill have ubuntu up and running in no time! Well this is 2 days later and still nothing, he's computer refuses to boot from cd, i been changing the boot sequence allot but no indications of it wanting to boot the cd at all, whatever i try. So i made a bootable ubuntu usb-stick, doesnt work everytime i boot but sometimes... i get the load-up-screen, select install ubuntu, go ahead with the install, everything goes like clockwork. "restart is needed" sure, i restart it. grub says something like cant boot, or nothing to boot on hdd.. and thats that. ive reinstalled it several times (10+), trying ext2,ext3,ext4, partitioning it diffrently, ive tried it all. i even took out the scsi hdd, and tried an old ide-drive i had, gave me the exact same error..
i dont have all the specs but ill write what i know:

I tried to run Ubuntu 10.10 - Netbook and Ubuntu 10.4 live CDs on my ASUS 901.
Both run well.
But neither reboot after clean install.
After the machines BIOS splash screen there is just a blinking cursor at the left top of the screen. No ubuntu/linux/kernel messages whatsoever.
I tried installing both versions on both SSD-s (4GB & 32GB) and ensured the BIOS was correctly set to boot from the correct one.
I searched the net quite a lot but didn't find anything that could relate to an ASUS 901

I'm having a problem installing Ubuntu Studio 9.10-alternate-amd64 onto my machine. This is the third attempt and I keep running into the same problem. Grub Boot Loader will only install to 16% when a screen pops up:
Ubuntu Installer Main Menu
Choose the next step in the install process:
choose language
configure the keyboard
detect and mount CD-rom
etc...
choosing the option "Install Grub boot loader on a hard disk" sends me back to the Grub install and once again at 16% the Ubuntu Installer Main Menu pops up. Choosing the option "Install the Lilo Boot Loader on a hard disk" resolves in an Lilo-install failure and i'm directed back to the Installer Main Menu. The option "Finish the installation" sends me back to the same menu..I'm stumped as to what to do... a disk check ensured me that the instal-dvd is valid though I can't get past this silly install menu.

I am quite experienced user of Ubuntu desktop / server distributions. Recently my desktop 9.10 disk failed and I decided to reinstall using 10.04. My configuration is a dual disk dual bot system. I have XP Pro SP3 on one disk and Ubuntu 10.04 on second. XP has own, untached MBR ubuntu got Grub 2 installed on the same disk as Ubuntu. Ubuntu disk is booting first in BIOS. Grub 2 detected both system, however I can boot only to Ubuntu. When I am trying to boot XP I got black screen only. Looks like booting is stack in BIOS stage, because crt+alt+del reset system.
I read Ubuntu forum, search Google and did not come with any solutions. My XP MBR is OK. I can boot directly, choosing XP HDD in BIOS as a starting disk. All entries in grub.cfg looks fine to me. I made 3 different clear installations of Ubuntu. Each with the same result. I reinstaled Grub2 with no effect. I wonder if this may be a hardware/Grub 2 compatibility issue. I am using quite old components.My motherboard is Assus P4C800 Delux. I have 5 HDDs 2 CD. Exactly the same configuration was OK with 9.10/XP dual disk dual boot using Grub legacy.

I'm trying to help my dad, who's recently got a computer that had Ubuntu 10.10 preinstalled. After some problems while I wasn't in a position to help out, I think a reinstallation is necessary. But when I make a USB drive to install it from, it only has .exe files, and nothing Ubuntu can use, so it doesn't boot on startup (even though it's set to boot from USB first) and it can't be run later either. This happens when I download the ISO from the main download page on the Ubuntu website, so is there a link to download one without Windows files?

Is there a guide somewhere to install Ubuntu without it asking for location/username/etc until first boot, and also have a reinstall? Kind of like what Dell does.I ask because I'm considering refurbishing some old PCs for one of those headstart places, where I'm not going to know who ends up with it.

So I was messing around trying to uninstall Nibbles and reinstall since I have an issue starting that game and something happened and removed the submenu under Games called "Logic", which had another whole list of games.
Is it possible to reinstall the games package or reinstall the update?I'm thinking more of the lines of a system restore or something so back 2 days from today.
