I was wondering wether it is possible to boot an eee 901 from an external usb cd drive? (for those who are unfamiliar with the eee, it has no internal cd drive) The cd drive is not listed in the bios boot menu.
View 2 RepliesThe thing is i want to have windows xp on my internal drive and ubuntu on the external. Not very hard but i want it so that i can choose what to boot when i start my computer and i also want to store other things then ubuntu on my external drive so i can use it in xp also
The reason i want ubuntu for is to use it while watching movies or chatting osv and use xp for games and my animation programs since they tend to be quite hard to get to work on ubuntu.
I have installed ubuntu 10.10 on and external usb drive and now my computer which runs XP will not boot unless the external drive is connected and on. Can I by pass this situation or do I have to uninstall ubuntu altogether and start over?

i made 4 partitions
/dev/sda1 ext2 /boot 1024mb (1gb)
/dev/sda5 swap 4096mb (4gb)
/dev/sda6 ext4 / 10240mb (10gb)
/dev/sda7 ext4 /home 204800mb (200gb)
and i put grub on the one what was mounted to /boot.
but my problem is when i restart my computer it just starts up windows.
my external hard drive is on, i have it set to boot from removable storage or something like ehtat first. i forget what i just know that booting from my internal hard drive is set to last so it should boot from the external.
I originally had windows vista on my pc and then I installed ubuntu on a partition, then I decided that I wanted ubuntu to be installed on my external hard drive so that it can be run on any computer, so I installed linux on my external hard drive then I deleted the linux partitions on my internal hard drive, then to further complicate thing I decided that I wanted grub un-installed because it ran slow when reading off of a external hard drive and just use dell's normal boot selector so I inserted my vista cd and ran /fixmbr and /fixboot which deleted GRUB and returned the default booting into vista, now my problem is that when I try to run linux by using dell's boot devices options It won't run and says that 'there is no boot manager installed'. Is it possible to have ubuntu on a external hard drive so that it can be booted from any computer? if so, how can I do it?

I have installed Ubuntu on unallocated space on my external, the first time I chose to put the bootloader on the external but when I booted up the computer and held the Option key it didn't recognize an OS to boot from.I am currently reinstalling Ubuntu but placing the bootloader on the internal hard drive hoping that the Mac boot menu will recognize an OS to boot from.

During graphical install I selected to install the bootloader not to the MBR but also to the external drive. After completing the installation I wanted to boot into Debian, but it just started Windows, which is installed on my internal. Even after choosing the USB drive in the boot menu, Windows booted. I later installed the bootloader to my internal, then I could boot into both Debian and Windows, but only if my hard drive was plugged in.

I have downloaded the "debian-8.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso" and have extracted it to my external hard drive. The letter assigned to this drive is "I". When I shut it down and enter the boot settings, it asks me for a name and a path for a new boot option. I have tried many different paths including:

I renamed the original Debian download (debian-8.3.0-amd64-netinst.iso) to "debian" so I didn't have to type the long file name into the path. When I type in "I:debian.iso" as the path and restart it pops up with a grub prompt, in my mind that tells me that some part of the debian.iso file is corrupted.

I have Ubuntu/Vista dual boot desktop with Single HDD (200GB) that i cloned to an external USB HDD (320GB) using clonezilla. My intention is to use the external HDD as a backup to up running in case my 3 year old desktop HDD fails. To make sure the clone is good to use if need, i connected external HDD to USB port and tried boot from it but got "Error 18". I tried to Google got some infoDid a fdisk -lu and got the following.

i currently have lucid installed on my laptop hard drive. i took this drive out and then on a new drive in its place i have installed windows 7. reason why i couldn't put windows 7 on the same drive is that i have a BIOS based system and the hard drive is GPT based not MBR. therefore, i couldn't get windows back on it.
I figured that using an esata expresscard interface i should be able to use the Windows 7 drive externally without much speed penalty since ExpressCard in my case is implemented on PCI Express and not USB.
So i can update grub using

and Windows 7 appears on the list. However, when i select this option during boot, it gives me errors that indicates that the external drive cannot be found (not surprising)
My guess is that when GRUB appears, the external hard drive has not been detected yet, and the modules for the expresscard may only be loaded during the boot process of lucid.
So I am wondering if there is anyway I can get this to work. meaning use lucid on my main drive and boot to Windows 7 from the external drive time to time.
I have an Acer netbook that I installed Remix on. Now I can't get the thing to boot from the CD drive which is connected via the USB port. Any suggestions? I set the boot order with the CD drive first and the HD last.

I would like to install Linux Ubuntu 11.04 on an external hard drive - its partitioned and ready for Linux.I've downloaded and burnt the .iso file to a DVD so its all good so far...First of all... is this possible without messing up my macbook? I don't particularly want to break into my macbook to disconnect the hard drive (I read on a tutorial for a previous version of Ubuntu that I'd have to do that... - does it still apply to 11.04?) - as it voids the warranty (I checked ).The reason I ask this is because I had a friend who partitioned their internal hard drive and installed Ubuntu on it. But after installation was complete they couldn't boot up Windows 7 or Ubuntu... and it resulted in them having to clean install Windows 7... - I don't want to end up in that situation

If it is possible to install it without messing up my macbook... - Do I just follow the install instructions but just make sure that where possible I make sure that everything is installed on my external hard drive?...I really need someone to put my mind at rest that everything will run smoothly and that I'll be able to run Mac OS X as usual but also that I'll be able to boot from my external hard drive to run Ubuntu.
i have installed fedora 14 with so many libraries ,development tools installed on my pc but i usually have to present some projects which can run on my system .........and can't be executed or compiled due to absence of libraries and tools there so, i there some way to so that i can use this current installation on my hard drive of my pc to some external media like external hard disk and plug and use that installation anywhere on any system..
View 2 Replies View RelatedApproximately 2 and a half years ago, I got a netbook from my Grandfather loaded with Windows XP Home Edition. For some reason it crashed on my and when I booted up my netbook again, it didn't show my anything but black screen.
From that time I wasn't able to use my computer until I discovered ubuntu and used it on my netbook. I, then, downloaded Windows 7 (lite) and got it on my netbook. The only problem that bugs me is that I want ubuntu and windows 7 and I cant because there is less disk space.
I have an 500 GB external HARD DRIVE. I want to be able to boot into UBUNTU using that. Is there a possible way to do it?
i have created a live ubunto live cd from an iso file...this cd boots just fine. however, after a successfull installation onto my usb e -hdd, and a restart that spits out the live cd from the rom, my pc absolutely will not boot from the "installed version".i did the install with the internal hard drive dis connectedthe live cd will run just fineubuntu is installed correctly on the external and restartsat this point (no live cd in the dvd drive) the ehd will not boot..pc just sits therei choose booer options and choose the ehd.....this cycles through a few dos commands looking for internet and what not but will never boot
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently installed CentOS 5.3 (from DVD media) on a Seagate 320GB external USB drive; this drive is connected to an Intel-based desktop computer (Intel D945GNT motherboard) with two internal SATA drives (both NTFS, as I'm running Windows XP SP3 as my primary OS). The install found the USB drive fine, and I manually configured my partitions; I had the install place the boot loader in the first sector of the boot partition of the external USB drive. I had set my BIOS to boot from the USB drive first; after a reboot, nothing happened...no GRUB menu, nada.
After some research, I had found an article discussing the need to rebuild the initrd for USB drive support. So, I booted the computer from the CentOS DVD, then went into 'linux rescue' mode; once I was at a command prompt, I navigated to the /boot directory and executed the following command:
mkinitrd --with-usb --preload=ehci-hcd --preload=usb-storage --preload=scsi_mod --preload=sd_mod ./usbinitrd-2.6.18-128.el5 2.6.18-128.el5
After the new "usbinitrd" was created, I edited grub.conf to reflect the new image, then attempted the reboot again from the USB drive. Still no GRUB menu.
I am trying to boot from an external hard drive, and have tried to use unetbootin like I used when crating a bootable usb drive but it does not see my external and will not create bootbale iso for me to run from my external hard drive.

Both systems will boot up fine its just that for some reason it won't boot to the internal drive (with vista) unless the external is connected. I routinely use the firewire drive to boot MAC OS X.However, I would like to boot from the linux partition of the USB drive. This linux partition had linux installed on it from a live cd, and during that process, I told the installer to install GRUB on the usb drive (which happened to be /dev/sdd).My question is, how do I get this disk to show up during the iMac option-boot? Currently, only the firewire MAC OS X option shows up. I have read about rEFIT, but that appears to install it to the Mac OS X disk (would that still work?)...Also mentioned was installing rEFIT to the internal EFI system partition, but I don't know if that is wise.
I installed the latest download of centos 5 on to a older dell optiplex gx260. install went fine. I then hooked up an external 1tb USB drive, formatted it ext3 from inside the LVM, and mounted it to /usb-mnt. the mount command is in /etc/fstab like normal: /dev/1tb-usb/1tb-usb /usb-mnt ext3 defaults 1 2
all of the steps taken were straight out of the gui now on boot up I get: checking filesystems fsck.ext3" No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/1tb-usb/1tb-usb [FAILED]

and yeah all the /dev entries are gone. I have rebooted in linux rescue mode from the install cd, commented out fstab and been able to boot. but that doesn't actually get me to having this disk available. how to I get the system to see the drive again? if I add it back to fstab is just goes into the above. I don't seem to be able to get LVM to see the disk anymore to reformat it, I can't get the system to allow me to access it so I seem stuck.

After installing ubuntu 9.10 on external HDD I cannot boot vista if external usb is unplugged(where ubuntu is installed). it says grub loading and after that recover grub ( i think that is what is says ... not certain in this moment ) anyway hope you get my dilemma. If you need more information I'll be glad to provide it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI recently reinstalled Ubuntu 11.04 "Natty Narwhal" Daily 20101124 on my netbook and decided to place /home on an external 500GB SimpleTech hard drive because the netbook's internal SSD is only 8 GB.
Well, when I boot into the main SSD to try and test out the system, I have two problems:
First of all, GRUB is unstable and won't always find the kernel to boot. In particular, I have to hit <Enter> one, two, even three times just for GRUB to find the kernel and boot the system.
However, that's not all:
When the system is booting, I wait endlessly for X to start. It doesn't. The Plymouth splash screen stays there and it looks like the system is endlessly booting with no progress.
Suggest chrooting into the drive and doing a "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" by any chance? This being in order to make the system on the drive up-to-date? If so, I will see if it boots.
I disconnect my internal Windows hard drive first. Then run the installer from the Desktop CD. Everything works great.This is approximately the steps I take: I reboot, everything is good. I reconnect my internal hard drive, boot to Windows, reboot back to Kubuntu, everything is still good. I run updates and follow the instructions of the Comprehensive Multimedia & Video Howto. I reboot again, still no problems. At this point, I figure everything is OK and I have no worries. I boot to Windows and do some work in that environment. The next time I boot to the external Kubuntu hard drive, I get the following errors:

My original intention was to install a distribution of Ubuntu onto an external hard drive so i can use it on different computers. I first downloaded and burned a copy of Ubuntu 10.10 and booted my Acer laptop to it. I then plugged in my external hard drive and tried to install ubuntu onto it by partitioning the external hard drive. After I did that, I booted from the external hard drive on my laptop and it ran the new distribution i created. However, when I tried to boot it from a different computer it said something like "partition not found." So the next time I tried to install ubuntu onto the external hard drive with out partitioning it, using the entire drive. This is what started to cause problems.
Now when I start up my laptop without the external hard drive plugged in i get "error: no such device: xxxx..... grub rescue>. When I start it up with the hard drive plugged in a grub comes up with the new installation, my old ubuntu installation, and my old windows vista.
I have 2 ubuntu's: 1 on my ineternal hard drive, 1 on my external
When I startup without my ext drive =>GRUB error 21.
And when I plug it in I can choose: the standard ubuntu kernel is the one on my external, and the original one is listed under other...
I'd like to be able to startup without external hard drive and make the ubuntu on my internal drve the standard.
I have windows on my internal drive on a dell D 800. I removed the drive and installed 9.10 on an external drive through the USB port. It works great, until I put the internal drive back in. With the F12 button on startup, and choosing the USB device to boot from, I get a grub recover>. If I remove the internal drive it boots fine with this method. I don't want to have to remove the HD each time. Do you have any idea what to do? Is there a command I can enter at the grub recover prompt?
View 4 Replies View RelatedA while ago I installed Ubuntu as a dual-boot on my Windows XP machine. It worked ok, but I quickly realised that I had neither the hard drive space or RAM to really run a dual-boot machine properly. So, I tried to uninstall Ubuntu and return to XP. Unfortunately, I discovered that uninstalling is not that straightforward and I've ended up with a theoretical dual-boot but with the HD repartitioned so that Ubuntu takes up the smallest amount of space possible. Because of this, when the machine boots, I still get a GRUB boot screen where I have to manually select XP to continue with the boot. (Ubuntu is still the default boot OS - I don't know how to change this!)
I've now decided to install Ubuntu again but this time on an external USB hard drive. In my head (and this could be wrong) this will give me the option to run the machine with Ubuntu if the external HD is connected or run XP if it is not.I've seen several tutorials about how to do this, but none seem to address the situation where GRUB is the boot loader already. Some tutorials tell me to disconnect the internal HD before attempting to install Ubuntu on the external. Do I really need to do this? Another alternative I've heard of is to download a LIVE cd to the external drive and then run the OS from that instead of performing a full install. Any thoughts?
I recently installed Maverick RC to a partition on my external drive.Following the GUI, I used the advanced option and installed the bootloader to "sdb" and had Maverick install to a partition on the external drive (I want the GRUB to be on the external drive so I can boot directly into Win7 when I don't have the external connected). And, to note, I did set my BIOS to boot from the external drive first, I have that option in my BIOS. So, when I finished installing, I rebooted and all I got was a "-". Not even a "disk not bootable message". It just hung at "-" .
