Ubuntu Installation :: Can Install 10.04 Over Beta Installation?
Oct 16, 2010
I have a need on one pc to go back to Lucid. Is there a way to do this without losing all the packages that have been installed? I understand that I can wipe out the previous and start fresh. I know how to deal with my own stored data.

So here's the schedule for 10.04:
April 8th, 2010 - Beta 2 release;
April 22nd, 2010 - Release Candidate;
April 29th, 2010 - Final release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
If I have 10.04 beta 1, could I just continue to update and not have to burn another disk to install? Or do I have to burn the beta 2 and reinstall if I want it?

I would like to start using Firefox 4.X beta and I read it was possible to install extensions such as Ad Block and No Script . What I would like is step by step instructions on how to add these currently non compatible extensions.

If I install beta 12 via PPA, will it eventually update to RC, then final automatically? Is it better to download Firefox 4 from the website and install it that way? I use both Maverick and Lucid on my machines.

I have 9.10 installed and working like a charm, due to the problems I had last time, I decided to leave an empty space to try and test upcoming editions, but I can't install it!
I get two error messages and can't get past the point of partition assignment.
Here's the screenshots. I'm trying to install on the free space.

I have a LiveCD of the Lubuntu Lucid 10.04 Beta. First, I will say, I'm extremely impressed with Lubuntu. It's incredibly lightweight, pretty intuitive to use, and very pretty when compared to other distros of comparable weight (eg, MEPISLite, wattOS etc.) The only problem is that when I click "Install Lubuntu," NOTHING HAPPENS. Is it just because it's the Beta?

Originally I had Ubuntu running on my machine. I installed windows beta 7 with a working dual boot. Get everything working in grub again. I decided to give Fedora a try and wiped my Ubuntu partition and installed Fedora. Everythings all good...except the reconfiguration of grub has left out my Windows 7 partition (nothing out of the norm) I tried manually adding windows 7 to /boot/grub/menu.lst but it's not working, when I try to boot into Windows 7 i get a little flashing "_" for a really long time and nothing happens.

Code: Could not calculate the upgrade
An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade: E:Error, pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks, this may be
caused by held packages.
This can be caused by:
* Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
* Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu
If none of this applies, then please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bug report.

I want to upgrade from my 10.10 to 11.04 beta I was wondering how should I do that and there is one more thing, all my setting and applications will be destroyed? And the last thing is, I really would like to have a netbook version environment, cos my friend had a 10.04 netbook and upgrade it directly into 11.04 and desktop and menus are like netbook, this is what 11.04 look like or that's because of his last ubuntu version?

I'm interested in trying out the 10.04 beta release. Does anyone know if it will be possible to upgrade from the beta to the final version once it is released in April? Or will I have to perform a fresh install of the final version?

I'm just trying to migrate to Ubuntu 10 Beta from Gentoo. One option in the installer intrigued me. It said something like (from memory) "Use password to log in and decrypt my home directory".
What happens behind the scenes when I choose this? (How) can I enable this later on? (I didn't activate it because I wanted to migrate my Gentoo user's home as painless as possible.)

I thought I'd give 10.04 a try since it's an LTS release and I was still using Jaunty. I did the upgrade over SSH using sudo*do-release-upgrade*-d and at first it just upgraded me to Karmic. After the reboot I ran the same command again and it looked like it was upgrading this time to Lucid. Now however after the reboot I no longer could log in (no SSH) and after inspecting the system locally by digging out and old monitor and keyboard, it seams the system hangs during boot.
I went into the Grub menu and found that there is no server kernel listed (apart from the old Jaunty one), only generic-pae and generic. None of these will boot, and if I try the recovery modes the keyboard doesn't function when I get to the recovery menu. Also if I boot the old 2.6.28-17-server, it does boot, but the keyboard also won't function once it boots. I can SSH in once the old kernel has booted, but when I tried to install linux-image-2.6.32-19-server via apt, it can't be found. Furher investigation online sems to indicate that there's only a 64-bit server package and no 32-bit package. What's that all about, is 32-bit no longer supported on the server platfom, and if so is my install now screwed?

I installed the 10.04 64 bit beta after 9.10 went down on me AGAIN, and when I booted up and got to the login screen I got the ubuntu chimes then the screen went black, the three lights on my keyboard, numlock etc, started flashing every second, and the chimes continued every second. Machine was completely unresponsive, cntrl+alt+del or cntrl+alt+backspace did nothing. Any ideas or how do I report this officially like?

10.04 beta 1 worked like a dream with one issue, beta 2 even in recovery mode just boots till it gets to the point of saying
fsck from util-linux-ng 2.17.2
/dev/sda1: clean, 415040/45604864 files, 152174098/18239785 blocks
To get my data off I tried to boot live CD but many of the directories I want are locked? I would prefer to reserect this botched beta 2 release or find a way to reinstall on to another partition without losing data.

Everything is working fine however I have just installed the Skype beta deb package for Ubuntu 8.10+ 64b and it won't let me sign on. The installation as far as I know went fine however when I go to enter my UN and PW the "Sign In" button will not light up.

I'm fed up with Gentoo and would like to migrate to Ubuntu. I just installed 10.04 Beta, but I'm wondering if I should continue configuring my system. Is it possible/easy/painless to upgrade to the release version when it comes out? Or should I stop investing any work into the beta right now and wait for the release?

I need to install a distro on a new machine. I'm edging towards Ubuntu 10.04 but I don't have time to wait until the official release date. If I install Beta 2 and continue to update it until the official release will my version be the same as the official release or am I going to have to make a fresh install of the official release?
I don't mind putting up with some minor bugs (especially as some big ones seem to have been solved since Beta 1) but I can't be doing with another fresh install. This seems to be a problem with a lot of distros. Fedora is every 6 months with no LTS solution, Debian is outdated on a lot of packages I use and Arch just seems to spend a lot of it's time broken.

I noticed that when I click on help about in k3b is says 1.91.0. Why is release candidate version included with a LTS version of Kubuntu? On K3b's website, it points to this:[URL].. I've reported this and another problem to kde.org and launchpad. This is kinda sad that I can't even continue multisession DVD-Rs that were created with a previous version of k3b.
I'm trying to continue burning a multession DVD-R that was created with a previous version of k3b. I'm using kubuntu 10.04. K3b prompts me to insert a suitable medium into the drive but it says it has found medium appendable dvd-r medium.
