Ubuntu :: Can't Get Java Plugin Working On 11.04
May 17, 2011
I am trying to get the java plugin extension for firefox so that I can run some java applications. I've modified the repositories, run sudo-apt-update, and run apt-get install java6-plugin (among other things). I thought this was successful because when I go to synaptic package manager the sun-java6 things are marked as installed. But when I open up firefox and look at my extensions, there is no java6 plugin!

I don't get the java plugin 1.6.0_21 working in Firefox 4.0b5pre. I deleted icedtea with the synaptic package manager and then I installed java 1.6.0_21 with chmod a+x and ./ .Everything goes well so far without any fault message. Then I created a symlink with ln -s ...but here I get no message. After I checked the java plugin in firefox and there was nothing I checked with java -version if java is there and there was no java installed.

I am just trying out Natty for the first time. I'm having trouble installing sun-java. The iced-tea plugin which comes with firefox just doesn't cut it for pogo card games.I seemed to have installed it correctly because when I check my Software Manager there is a green check on all of the sun java6 stuff. But when I go to tools/addons/plugins the only thing there is the icedtea (no sun java6 plugin). I may have to go back to using linux mint.

The problem is that I can't get the Firefox Java plugin to work! I have tried many things but Firefox doesn't even show the plugin in the about: plugins page.My Firefox version is 3.6.3 and I am using java version 6 update 20.

I have both firefox-3.0.18 and java installed on my RHEL5 64-bit system. But for some reasons, java plugin is not working in firefox. $va -versionjava version "1.6.0_18"Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_18-b07)Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 16.0-b13, mixed mode)As per previous recommendation from this forum, I made soft link for libjavaplugin_jni.so in firefox/plugins directory.

I try to install the java plugin but the java test pages show not installed. I have tried the openjdk-6-jdk package and the Oracle/Sun 1.6.0_26 version to no avail.
Is there some good instructions page someplace? I have yet to find a set of instructions that provides something clear that works.

Code: ~ $ /usr/java/jre1.6.0_25/bin/java -showversion Error occurred during initialization of VMjava/lang/NoClassDefFoundError: java/lang/Object
That's the error I get. When trying to run a java app with the firefox plugin, the browser simply crashes if it's the 64bit java or tells me it's not installed if it's the 32bit version.
I'm at a loss as to what to do. I think it has something to do with leftover gunk from a previous version I misinstalled(Is that even a word?) Anyway, the only thing that google could come up with was a solution for windows which laid blame on Bill Gates for having a bunch of pf (java prefetch) files stuffed into c:windows for no apparent reason. The solution was to delete them, but I can't seem to find the java prefetch folder in linux. The method I used is downloading the rpm from java.com the rpm2tgz then installpkg then cp libnpjp2.so to firefox plugins folder.

I use openSUSE 11.4 64 bits, KDE and FireFox 5.0. I regularly update. When trying to reach my bank, I get the following error: Code: icedteanp plugin error: Failed to run /usr/lib64/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk/jre/bin/java. For more detail rerun "firefox -g" in a terminal window. Is there anything I can do to remediate ? Does IcedTea everything that Java does?

I opened Firefox, and tried to use an Internet speed tester that requires Java. I've always used this with no problems. Today, I'm having problems with it. It told me to check that my Java plugin was enabled, or whatnot. I looked at Tools > Add-Ons > Plugins, and found that Java is gone....
What's up with that? I'm using the latest version of Firefox (version 3.6.8 / Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu cononical - 1.0) on Ubuntu 9.10.
I checked with Synaptic Package Manager, and I found sun-java6-jre, and all of it's related packages, openjdk-6jre-* packages, etc. were installed (over ten packages with 'java' or 'jre' and '6' in the package names).
So, I don't understand why Tools > Add-Ons > Plugins doesn't show my java plugin anymore. I also checked about: plugins (had to put a space between the colon and 'plugins' because a smiley shows up aboutlugins), but there was nothing in there about java either.
What's going on? Has Ubuntu decided it doesn't want to use Java (I remember reading something about Oracle changing the license for Sun Java somewhere)? Or is this a fluke?
Either way. Synaptic Package Manager says Java is installed... So, what else do I need to do to fix this? I read other posts about Firefox and Java, but they were about installing java, and the like, and I have Java installed....

At first, I enabled the partner source and installed "sun-java6-plugin", as that was listed in an earlier Ubuntu install's package list. But Firefox does not see this plugin (even after a reboot). So I removed that package and its friends, and installed "icedtea6-plugin" as found on [url], but this does not work, either. This is with Ubuntu 10.10 for i386 on an ASUS Eee PC 900.
How to get a Java plugin working? I know I've had it working before without having to do anything like this. But that could have been an earlier version of Firefox. Could Firefox now be broken? Or could they have blocked Java, now?

I use ubuntu 8.10 with the ubuntu packaged version of firefox, however i would like to use the latest java runtime environment from the Sun website and NOT use the ubuntu packages. the problem I have is that i do not know where to place the link to my latest java plugin file. Where is the location for mozilla plugins ? the directory ~/.mozilla/plugins didn't exist and even when I created one and put a link there I still had the older version of Java.

I am installing Java Plug-in, version 6, upd 18 so I may play games on pogo. Can I make this happen with a simple apt-get? I don't want to sym link all over the place.
Here is my output when I run apt-get, giving it what I was told to give it...

My Java plugin is not loading on Firefox. I need it to load, but FF doesn't even recognize Java is installed. It works on Google Chrome (which would be nice... except the plugin is buggy there)
Here's the background
* I'm running Firefox 3.6.3, through the repository on
Code: [URL]
* My process list includes:
Code:
23679 ? 00:00:00 firefox
23688 ? 00:07:31 firefox-bin
* I run NoScript, but I've had it work before w/NoScript, and everything is currently allowed. I'm fairly sure it has rather to do with FF 3.6.3.
* My about.config settings:
Code:
java.default_java_location_others;/usr/java
java.default_java_location_solaris;/usr/j2se
java.global_java_version_file;/etc/.java/versions
java.java_plugin_library_name;javaplugin_oji
* My directory settings:
Code:
patrick@patrick-laptop:/usr/lib/jvm$ ls
java-6-sun java-6-sun-1.6.0.15

I use Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, live CD install, and I can't play runescape (or such) with the only available java plugin. In firefox, doesn't even finish updating runescape. In opera, when I use the member's login, the applet just shuts down. Known problem in opera: The page has to refresh to get rid of the ads when you sign in as member, I think the plugin doesn't like refreshing while logged in.

Recently it appeared to me that my java-plugin is missing. (apparently I don't need it that often).
I've had various upgrades of firefox on my machine, currently i've got version 3.6.13.
I tried to check the plugin directory for the java-plugin - only to find out that I have more than one:
I found out that the other plugins I use reside in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins. In this directory there is
All this has cost me hours now - but still I have no java-plugin. Quite frustrating.
How can I get a working java-plugin? How can I clean up all this plugin mess?

Thus far I have had no luck. I have installed Namoroka from the ppa repo and got flash working nicely but java is another matter. I followed instructions to install the jre manually but no matter what I do it will not display in FF's "aboutlugins". I have to ask if Namoroka is using the default folder: /home/username/.mozilla/plugins/? Because that is where I created the symlink to the java plugin.

For some reason Java Applications running through Firefox have no audio, Java applications running through the java -jre command do run with working audio though. I don't know what else I need to post, but this is what I've been getting. Audio does seem to work with most of my other applications and games.

I've had a recent run of ubuntu snafus lately, most of which come back to accidentally getting firefox 3.6.4 (namaroka) installed. I've since rolled back and gotten flash working properly again, but Zotero isn't working. I figured out it was because java was being screwy and have been trying to repair it. I followed the instructions here first: [URL] and installed version 6 update 19. It came up as an add-on in firefox but didn't do anything. When I pull up a page with java on it the page just says it is disabled and I can click to install it. However, I then get was getting a box saying: "E: Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages." I have since removed update 19, done a complete removal in synaptic, and reinstalled JRE and the plugin by going to a page in firefox and clicking the install button. Now it still isn't under my extensions list in firefox, it says it's disabled on pages with java, and when I click to install it says I already have it. I'm running Karmic koala by the way.
