Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Compile Gimp - Can't Find Libglib
Jan 11, 2011
I'm trying to compile gimp on ubuntu 9.10 and I'm stuck during the ./configure stage I'm getting the following:
Code:
checking for GLIB - version >= 2.24.0... no
*** Could not run GLIB test program, checking why...
*** The test program compiled, but did not run. This usually means
The config.log complains that it's missing glib.h.
[Code.....
If aptitude shows libglib2.0-dev installed the pc file must exist somewhere.. how to verify that libglib2.0-dev is installed correctly?

Some of you may have had with issues after installing GIMP on Lucid Lynx 10.04. Which may be directly related to "gimp-help-en", which could prevent you from installing other applications and preforming system tasks. If so, use this method to fix it.
Process: (Terminal > $ sudo apt-get install gimp)
1. After installing Gimp go to the terminal:
2. Then load up the language support application:
3. Then it will ask you to install the "gimp-help-en", confirm it.
4. Fix'd
I think this issue is directly linked to a systems with multiple languages, but I haven't been able to test this theory out yet.

I do a lot of artistic stuff, so I need a good graphics program. I think Gimp will be perfectly fine for my needs for the time being, but I can't find the layers box. When I opened it for the first time, only the toolbox and tool options were open, and I can't find anything about the layers. I checked the online manual, and that didn't help at all. I have version 2.6.

If you had Gimp 2.6 (with gimp-plugin-registry installed) and installed Gimp 2.7 to try its new goodies, but Layer Effects are not showing, and when executing "gimp" from console you get these *nasty* errors:
Code:
This is a development version of GIMP. Debug messages may appear here.
gimp-user-install: migrating from /home/user/.gimp-2.6
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins/layerfx.py", line 23, in <module>
import gimp, gimpplugin, math
ImportError: No module named gimp .....
If you haven't install the 2.7 version yet. Before upgrading, backup "python" directory and then just restore it after installing 2.7.

I recently upgraded to koala, but gimp no longer functioned after upgrade; i.e. open file popup dialogue freezes, crop tool is non-functional, preferences dialogue was absolutely a blank box. Tried un-install/re-install thru both the new software center and synaptic. Same broken result every time. Tried a direct download from gimp.org but ran into a lot of dependency stuff I know nothing about; I'm an end user, not a coder. So, how do I get a functioning install of gimp?

It's sort of a pain to find any support on this because GIMP comes pre-installed. For whatever reason it didn't install properly on install, and being lazy and a newbie, didn't bother to research the initial install's error it produced upon attempting to execute it, and instead found another package and installed it.For whatever reason it's still not loading. If it was any other application I'd probably just search for an alternative, but seeing as this is GIMP there isn't really...(there's Krita but GNOME's my favourite WM and I dislike using KDE applications[I'm quite superficial], and I'd probably be using an image editor a lot so yeah).

I'm trying to compile fluxconf from source (here). It's a graphical ui for setting up the menus in fluxbox. I've got all the libraries, but when I compile it says:
Code:
cc1: warnings being treated as errors
fluxconf.c: In function sauver:
fluxconf.c:244: error: format not a string literal and no format arguments
fluxconf.c:187: error: ignoring return value of write, declared with attribute warn_unused_result
[code]....
that doesn't look like a dependency issue and other people seem to be able to compile/make this just fine with no problems. How can I get this to compile?

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 2.6.32-10-generic today. After a succesful update that fixed a couple of nagging problems on my laptop (nice work guys) I started VMware Workstation. I got the expected "Before you can run VMware, several modules must be compiled..."
The compile errors out and points to the setup log. I have searched and found several very similar posts all relating to build-essential or kernel-headers not being installed. I have verified both are installed and up to date.
Here's the important part of the log:
Code:
Jan 15 17:39:16.079: app-139708855981824| Trying to find a suitable PBM set for kernel 2.6.32-10-generic.

I would like to install PHP 5.2.x on my machine because Drupal does not yet fully support PHP 5.3.x and I get a bunch of deprecated warnings.
I already installed PHP 5.3 via yum and a few other php extensions.
If I install/configure PHP 5.2.x do I need to uninstall my PHP 5.3 first?
When configuring PHP 5.2.x can I use the php extensions I already downloaded when I installed PHP 5.3?

I have a new PC with an Intel Atom D510 and would like to recompile the kernel with the options for the Atom CPU, but as you can imagine, compiling the kernel on the Atom is extremely slow. How do I compile the kernel on my faster X86_64 (AMD 965X) system for the Atom D510 system? I read some documentation on doing a cross compile and another on changing the architecture and subarctitecture.

this is how to set your ubuntu for compiling to use multi processor. some older packages require you to use only 1 processor. so comment the export make flag, then "echo $MAKEFLAGS" to see how many processors your using you might need to "source .bashrc" to update the rc file
Code:
cat >> ~/.bashrc << "EOF"
# parallel compile settings

I am trying to get Frostwire for Fedora 12 and the RPM download does not work, I have been checking the web the past 8 hours trying to find version 4.20.3 in RPM format but i came up with nothing. I have a prevous version of it so please do not suggest I get a older version or limewire because limewire has a totally different problem. I downloaded the .tar.gz file and I have no idea how to install it. I think I heard something about having to compile it but to be honest I am compleatly lost in doing this. I have tried other online fourms about how to compile but i just do not really understand them. If you know how will you please give me a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to compile and install Frostwire.

Where do I find the linux-source package and the linux-headers package? Are they on the CD that I can copy to /usr/src (is that the right place...)? Or do I need to download them from the old-releases.ubuntu.com site?
The issue now is that the nVidia installer from their website wants the source code to build the right packages for this machine, however, I do not have the src directory with the source code that it is looking for. Is there some way to give this too it now?
I am running Mythbuntu 7.10
