Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Boot From Working CD Drive

I am trying to a friend setup his computer to dual boot Windows and Ubuntu. While the CD drive works (and can burn cds, rip cds, play cds, etc with no noticible impairment of function), it is unresponsive before the Operating System is loaded. What I mean is that when we put in a bootable cd (we've tried Ubuntu, Windows 7, Puppy Linux, gparted, Windows Recovery Disk) and go through the boot menu right after the computer manufacturer screen (HP), and select CD-Rom Drive, the screen goes black with the exception of a blinking white cursor. The computer will boot from the hard drive, and we managed to boot and install Ubuntu from a flash drive just fine.
Is there any reason why a CD drive might do this? It once, years ago, had a large amount of soda spilled in it, but I would imagine if anything was broken hardware-wise, the drive just wouldn't work at all. I don't know that much about hardware (or anything, really), but the only thing I could think of is that it could have something to do with an OS loading a more complete set of drivers than the BIOS.

Back in Febuary, my wife bought a Toshiba Satilite from Wal-Mart and a few days ago the hard drive got toasted. So now I'm using an 8gig usb drive as the boot drive. I also have 2 other flash drives for downloads and such but overall I am very pleased.
I'm running 11.04 32 bit and was wandering if 64 bit made a difference. I've got 4 gigs of ddr3. It's slow to boot, but once it's running, it's faster then Windows 7. Very nice.
Is there anything I should chage, use, since I'm running it off a flash drive??
I have 3 seperat drives, 2 x 16 gigs and an 8 gig, and was wandering which one would be best for booting off of? What do I look for??

I downloaded the Fedora live dvd iso file, burned it to a dvd. I was wondering if I forgot to do something or did I do something wrong. When I try to install from the dvd I get this error message, isoLinux: Disk error 80 , AX = 42A7 , drive 9F Boot Failed: press key to retry When I press a key to retry I get the same error. I also tried to install virtual pc and get not boot disk found.

Every time I need to use the floppy drive, I again find it not working.I have reported this problem before, and it has been fixed before, several times.It is broken again.Clicking on the "Floppy Drive" item in Nautilus does not even access the drive.Right clicking and selecting "Detect Media" at least spins the disk, but gives the same non-results regardless of whether there is a disk in the drive.With no disk in the drive this happens:

I recently put together a computer with scrap parts that I have. It had no operating system on it at all. I downloaded Ubuntu on a different computer and burned it to a CD (I also verified the hash). I put the disk in and followed the instructions. Then when it wanted me to take the disc out and reboot I did so and clicked ok and it rebooted. I changed the boot order so that 0-HDD was first, and it said that the disk failed and wanted me to put in the system cd. Anybody have any solutions?

I have an Acer Aspire One ZG5 netbook. I have Windows XP home installed. I downloaded Ubuntu 10.04 netbook edition and put it on USB drive by Unetbootin. I booted from usb and it worked perfectly. I then installed Ubuntu to my hard drive from the live desktop and nothing went wrong. Perfect so far. Next, i shut down my netbook and took the usb drive out. I booted my netbook and it started loading Windows XP, didn't ask me if i want to use Ubuntu. I shut down the computer and pressed F5 while booting. It asked me what i want to do. I selected 'go back to OS selection' and i could only choose Windows XP from there. It was the only thing i could choose.

Is there an easy way to do this? I thought about copying my laptopard drive to my internal TB hard drive, but I since I have a spare laptop HD anyway and my case has a slot for laptop HDDs I think I am just going to throw it into the case as a second hard drive.ow can I add that partition to the boot loader on my other hard drive without using RAID?

I have been looking around and cant really find a guide on how to do this, I have found guides on how-to put a live CD on a usb flash drive, but this isnt want i want to doI want to use a high-end USB flash drive as a sort of SSD to put my boot partition on, I think if i do this it will decrease my boot time significantly. If it works i am going to take the back case off of my laptop and install the guts of the flash drive inside my laptop, i think the mod would be cool, i just dont know how to do it on the software side

I've tried to boot my Ubuntu 10.04 from my disc drive, and installing it in Windows like an app, but every time I do my screen looks like it went bad. The top two inches are the way it should be but the rest is white, and I can't see anything. Is there some setting on my comp I need to adjust or did I just get a bad disc? The disc doesn't have a scratch on it and I've cleaned twice now.

I can boot and run the live CD "ubuntu-10.04.1-desktop-amd64." Verified checksum and is ok
When I install it via CD or after running in CD mode and installing from the desktop the system will not boot. 250gig SATA drive.I can't for the life of me get it to boot after installation. It keeps dropping into 'initramfs' I even tried installing "ubuntu-10.04.1-server-amd64" and get the same result.Is it something to do with the SATA drive?

After many failed attempts, I finally got Ubuntu on my Flash Drive (16gb). This was completed by downloading Ubuntu Desktop Edition (ubuntu.com), and using The Universal USB Installer to put the .iso on my Flash Drive.
When I try to boot my PC from the flash drive, I get a black screen saying...
"No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found! Boot:"

I've made myself a multiboot usb drive and looking to add ubuntu to it. I've created a live system and its respective casper drive, made the changes I want to it and now looking to make the whole system boot to ram including the casper drive so I can use the same usb drive in multiple machines instead of having to have multiple usb pens.
I've added the toram option in the txt.cfg file but only the operating system (filesystem.squashfs) goes into ram so when I take the usb out, the files on the casper drive are lost.
Could you tell me either how to boot the casper drive to ram or how to combine or merge the filesystem.squash and the casper-rw drive.

I have a HP PC that I have installed a PCI SATA controller in. The PC doesn't support booting from the card.... So here is what I would like to do. (btw..I'm a seasoned noob on Linux.) I would like to be able to boot ubuntu 10.10 from a usb pin drive 2Gb to a point where the kernal can recognize the SATA drive then start the OS from the SATA HDD.
I can see and access the drive if I boot to a live CD but when I install it won't boot because the PC's bios does not see the PCI card. This has to be possible but my Google foo isn't strong enough to find out how. Would a simple GRUB install on the pen drive work?

I want to know if/how I can copy a verified Live CD to an external HDD and then install that HDD in another computer in order to do a full install? I have an old Toshiba laptop with a dead CD drive and the "no legacy" BIOS (should be called "no access" that cannot boot from USB. I'm wondering if I can either copy the live CD to that HDD (external) then install that drive in the laptop and use it to do a full install, or if I can do a full install to the external and install it to the laptop and have it work? IOW, is there any way to get Ubuntu to detect a new environment and reconfigure itself?

I have my computer set up with 2 40 GB drives (IDE) and 1 500 GB(SATA). One 40 GB drive for Windows XP, 1 40 for Ubuntu and the 500 GB for storage for both (formatted NTFS).
I am building a computer for my wife and want to use 1 80 GB IDE drive instead of 2 40s and a 320 GB IDE for storage (the storage drive is irrelevant to my issue). These are all parts I have laying around. I installed XP and partitioned the 80 gig into 2 40 gig partitions during the installation.
When I go to install ubuntu, it shows me all the partitions of both drives but gives me no option (other than manual) for using the 2nd half of the 80 gig for installation.
I need to know how to set it up manually. It gives me a slider to divide the 2nd half of the 80 GB drive into 2, but I don't know what size to make them. Also when I look at my 40 GB drive from my computer it show 3 divisions: "39 GB ext4", "ext 1.7 GB" and "1.7 GB swap space".

am using Ubuntu 11.04 and disconnected that hard drive to load Debian on a second hard drive. Now when I plug in the Ubuntu drive it will not load. Is this a problem with "grub" and what must I do to boot my original Ubuntu drive?

I had a little mission this week-end = my girlfriends 250Gb SATA hard drive laptop crashed this week (video card failure), and I wanted to help her by getting all her valuable data on an old Pachard Bell EasyNote laptop I have hanging around.One big problem : this laptop does not boot on CD drive, nor USB drive, and does not have a Floppy slot. There is an old hard drive with a lot of bad sectors in it, and I have a 80Gb IDE drive I want to put in.
My tools : a SATA to USB adapter, a IDE to USB adapter, a Ubuntu 9.10 LiveCD, a Windows7-run netbook, and the web.My goal : to configure the hard drive in some sort for it to install Ubuntu on boot (much like when you buy a laptop : the OS installs on first boot).I quickly found this to be impossible, as there is no Ubuntu pre-install format available (or that I found). So the next step was to get a complete install on the new hard drive, one way or another.First I tried cloning the 250SATA drive on the 80GB IDE drive, but this clearly led to an error (Grub error 18. It was looking for a 250Gb drive where I only fed him 80.)
Next step was to get some kind of LiveCD-like boot from the hard drive. This is made possible by using the UNetBootIn tool and the related Ubuntu Documentation. I met some problems during the real Ubuntu Install at the point where the laptop tried to format the drive the CD image was on. This other Ubuntu Guide gives a few workarounds and tweaks for that situation, but they didn't solve the issue for me.Final idea was to Live-CD like boot from the rubbish hard drive and install the system on the new hard drive plugged in through USB. This failed because the computer does not boot LiveCD-like on the old hard drive...
I'm kinda stuck on what to do now. I still don't have a nice boot on the computer (only a Live-CD like obtained with the UNetBootIn tool), and am still not capable of doing a "real" install on the Laptop.I'm aware that solving the boot-from-cd issue would bring me a faster solution (maybe!), but the idea was to get a hang on this so that I can install Ubuntu on my CD-free netbook soon (Although my netbook might very well boot on USB, but still).My final and last idea is to go buy some kind of adapter that would let me plug the two hard drives into the laptop at the same time, LiveCD-like boot on the new one, install Ubuntu on the old one (connected directly via IDE) and then clone the old one to the new one. But I wish I don't have to go to that extreme ;o)Writing this I just thought of one thing : I could install Live-CD like Ubuntu on a flash drive, launch it on my netbook and install Ubuntu on the new hard drive connected through USB... I'm running into some difficulties installing Ubuntu on an old mac ibook G4 I was given. sepcs are fine (1. something Ghz processor, 700mb RAM)--yet the internal drive and CD player are dead. I installed MAC OS 10.4 PPC on a firewiredrive and boot from there. But how can I install Ubuntu ? I understood that I need to use the non supported PPC version which I downloaded and have burned a CD of. I have an external CD player which works. The Cd's appears in the firewire mac os, and the external FW disk still has 200 Gigs free.I plan to let the instaler choose this freespace to create the partitions, but how do I get to the installer ?
When i boot with the CD in the drive and press C, nothing happens. when I press options / alt, ubuntu the ubuntu install CD doesn't show up I've read that I must use open firmware, and found some key combination, but this doesn't change anything (command, option O F). I have Gparted if the 200gig partition needs to be repartitioned. I'm trying to install Ubuntu as a dual boot on this old ibook G4

The thing is i want to have windows xp on my internal drive and ubuntu on the external. Not very hard but i want it so that i can choose what to boot when i start my computer and i also want to store other things then ubuntu on my external drive so i can use it in xp also
The reason i want ubuntu for is to use it while watching movies or chatting osv and use xp for games and my animation programs since they tend to be quite hard to get to work on ubuntu.

I have a dual boot machine windows xp & Ubuntu 10.04. I want to use Grub 2 to boot an Ubuntu 8.04 32bit live cd image off my hard drive. I put a copy of the 8.04 iso in a new directory /boot/iso. I added the following lines to my grub.cfg.

So here is my situation: I am unable to boot from a CD I am unable to boot from a Flash Drive I have Ubuntu installed with Wubi, and can boot into it successfully I have a Ubuntu Installation CD I have created a partition into which I'd like to install Ubuntu. Is it possible to boot into my current Wubi Ubuntu installation, and then launch the Ubuntu installer from the installation CD, and then direct this installation to the empty partition I have waiting?
Basically, I think my question is this: Does anybody know what file to run manually from the CD in order to launch the installer?

I would like to replace my old 100gb boot drive in my server with a new SSD...for obvious reasons. So what is the best way to clone the existing installation (10.04 desktop) from the old boot drive onto the new SSD? I have read some guides online that suggest using the live CD and various software packages but most of them say it will only work if you are cloning to a disk of the same size or larger, nobody seems to address taking an installation from a larger volume down to a smaller one - in my case a 100gb IDE onto a 30gb SATA SSD.
As this is a datadump, the only drives I really care about are the various 1.0/1.5tb drives that actually store the data, the OS drive contains nothing more than the standard OS, samba/webmin and a few monitoring tools. So I guess it's not the end of the world for me to start fresh and install 10.10 next week, but I would like to know for the sake of this upgrade and future ones if anyone can be of assistance. basic specs if needed: Athlon64 X2 3800, 2gb DDR500, Asus A8N SLI Premium (Nforce 4/Silicon Image 3114R RAID controller). OS is on a 100gb IDE (WD1000BB-00C) and I would like to toss it on a Kingston 30gb SSD (SNV125-S2/30).

I've been trying to find a solution, I've looked everywhere but no luck. I have a 1TB drive, checked the cable & it's connected to motherboard SATA0. That motherboard is dual booting fine (windows7 + Ubuntu 10.04).
My problem is when I connect the other SATA drive, SATA1. Upon restarting my machine, nothing happens & I dont see any boot menu (grub).
I've checked the bios settings, boot drives are in order:
CD-ROM
SATA0
SATA1
To check if the second drive has physical errors, I've connected it as SATA0 (alone) & installed successfully windows & ubuntu 10.04. I formatted it & installed ubuntu studio. The drive is working fine. So I formatted it again, & now it's not connected.
How can I make it work? I want SATA0 to have both windws/ubuntu, & the SATA1 to be just a data storage drive.

I've taken the plunge and embarked on my very first install/congifuration of Ubuntu. I've successfully installed 10.04 from the LiveCD onto a brand-new 500 GB hard drive. It boots fine. At least, it did until I reconnected another hard drive that contains a Gentoo system. (I had unplugged the Gentoo drive during the installation so as not risk mucking it up).In the presence of the Gentoo drive, the Ubuntu system starts to boot, but then fails with an a error that it's unable to mount /var.Investigation (df -k) indicates that it's mounted one of the parititions on the Gentoo drive. If I unplug the Gentoo hard drive, the Ubuntu system agains boots properly.
I have no idea why the 10.04 system even sees the other drive, much less mounts one of its partitions.My intent, once migrating to Ubuntu, was to copy needed user files and data from the old Gentoo system, then repartition the drive and use it for additional Ubuntu storage. Seems I can't get there from here.Is there some feature in Ubuntu that causes it to go looking for any other drives accessible on a system and then go about mounting random partitions?

I have a eeepc netbook with 4 gig internal flash storage, no hard drive.I broke the GUI. The ONLY way I can access it now is through a terminal.It has barely enough space to get the ubuntu .iso image over to it.I have tried upwards of 10 times with 2 or 3 different distros to make a bootable usb drive with my macintosh. The process appears to complete without errors but the usb sticks are 100% unbootable every time (i.e. the netbook refuses to boot from them, as does my mac).
I get the SAME result using the SAME usb stick that I originally used to install ubuntu on the netbook, so I know it did work once. Regardless, I would like to try as a last hope to start from scratch making the bootable usb stick from my actual netbook.I do NOT have access to a GUI (see above).direct me to instructions to make a bootable usb drive from ubuntu 8.something?

Recently, my laptop was dropped frying the factory installed hard drive. I'm not able to purchase a replacement immediately, but still need to use my laptop. I was able to get a hold of a 16 GB flash drive onto which I installed Ubuntu. When I install Ubuntu onto the drive the same way I installed it onto my hard disk originally it won't boot, but if I install it as a live CD it refuses to save any of the changes I make (which I know is the way live CDs always work).
So, finally, here is my question, is there a way I can install Ubuntu onto my flash drive and have it boot and save the way a hard drive typically would?
