I've had some broken packages for a while, I've gotten around to trying to fix the situation. I didn't know how to find them, and found this thread archived. That helped, however now when I try to mark an installation or removal, the synaptic crashes and closes.
View 9 RepliesDuring my recent upgrade from 8.04 to 10.04, I got a few error messages concerning the flashplugin-nonfree not installing correctly. A user named carlee helped me get flash working over on the absolute beginner forum, but I've got a related problem still unresolved.Update manager is convinced that my perfectly working flash installation is broken, and insists I update it.However, the update fails every time, telling me E: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal.
Opening synaptic, I cannot select the reinstall option for the plugin. Removal and complete removal are my only options, and both give the above error. More problematic, I cannot de-select the flash plugin entirely. It MUST be part of any other package update through synaptic (if I wanted to re-install avant window navigator, for example). And since the flash removal operation fails, synaptic is effectively non-operational.How can I convince my update manager that my fully operational flash is just fine the way it is?
I'm fairly a newbe. Synaptic tells me I have a broken package: kdebase runtime It tells when repairing:

I want to backup my installed packages using this method mentioned in thread [URL] but the problem is I have 31 broken parkages, i want a way to know the broken parkages so I would remove them in my repack so when i restore the parkages I wont have broken parkages. For now i cant fix them as I dont have internet....

without the boxes to check in the other software tab, i cannot install needed software, my simply shows BLANK no matter what i do:
and yes, i already checked all boxes in the Ubuntu Software thread including restricted.

This SHOULD appear by default, without doing anything, even in a freshly installed system, these boxes should appear by default:
I just upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit today and I installed Adobe Air with no problems. I then installed the Pandora Desktop application and that installed fine as well. After the installation I saw a "do not enter" style sign in my status bar on the desktop. When I hover over it it's telling me an application has a broken installation. When I go into Synaptic and filter for broken I see "com.pandora.desktop.fb9956fd96e03239939108614098a d95535ee674.1" is showing broken. The description is just <> <>. Both Adobe Air and Pandora are working fine, and I'd be happy to ignore this warning except it's going to break my updating because it throws a warning every time.
Does anyone know how I can see what is apparently broken with the install or how I can suppress this message? I had the same versions of software running on 10.04 just fine before I formatted, and I'm the only person on the internet with this problem so far.I've gone over dependencies several time and don't see anything missing. I've tried reinstalling both apps several times. I don't know why this is even showing in Synaptic, since it's a sub app of Air...
I attempted to install openemr which was taking its sweet time to install it was most of the way through but I had to leave so I left my computer running. Computer when I came back was asleep I started back up and tried installing something from software manager and I got this message from it:
E: I wasn't able to locate file for the openemr package. This might mean you need to manually fix this package.: I tried fixing from synaptic but even synaptic is complaining.
I was using Synaptic to remove unwanted sound & audio programs...it seemed to take out other files that were non-related ?
(1) Now apt-get complains about a "Held Package" and doesn't tell me the pkg name.
(2) Synaptic is broken...error..E: The value 'stable-updates' is invalid for APT::Default-Release as such a release is not available in the sources
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.
stable-updates isn't even in my sources list. I've purged synaptic, and re-installed but remains broken. When you close error msg synaptic disappears ? Therefore can't use synaptic at all.
(3) apt-get says many packages that were available are no longer available...like one of the main repos has disappeared ?
(4) I put the same repos that are working for my brother who is running Debian Jessie also, but didn't improve the number of missing available packages.

To recap problems...apt-get held pkg....broken synaptic....unavailable pkgs.
I forced the install of graph-tool package [URL]. Now it is of course tagged as broken, so update manager wont do anything. But I want to accept it, I know it is not really broken. (In fact, graph-tool_xxx.deb asks for libcgal4. squeeze only has libcgal5, so I am betting this is not an issue, as far as graph-tool is concerned.)

I have a laptop which has Xubuntu on a Wubi install. I have no way to connect my laptop to the internet, as I have dial-up on my desktop and my laptop doesn't have a dial-up modem. I need to install "libc6" as a dependency for libc6-dev, but when I double click the .deb (which I transferred using an sd card using my desktop, which has Vista) It shows the window for a couple seconds, and then closes. I already have libc6 installed, but it is an older version.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI already checked the preferences of UM but the filtering is somewhat awkward -- i.e. you have choice to EITHER install silently security updates OR be notified about all updates. One does not exclude the other, but for UM apparently it does.
But I have similar yet different need -- be notified about ONLY security updates (so when I click to show the updates, I will see only them). The rest of the updates should be ignored -- unless the update is required by the other, security update package.

View 3 Replies View RelatedWell, I was just doing an update, and there was an update for git that was held back. I decided to force this update using 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade', and installation of git then failed. At this point in Synaptic - I could see versions listed as 'lucid', 'lucid-security', and then this ppa version. Then I barely managed to remove git - but now, if I try to install it again, *only* the ppa version is listed in Synaptic - no more 'lucid' and 'lucid-security' versions!!! Does anyone have an idea how I could recover the 'lucid', 'lucid-security' versions? I will try to salvage as much of the terminal with the problems as I can below...

I have 2 new repos that are listed in my sources.list file. They are also visible in System/Administration/Software Sources/Other Software. However, they are not visible under the Origins tab in Synaptic. And how would I download from them if Synaptic doesn't see them?
View 8 Replies View RelatedTook an emachines T3265 with Win XP home and used 9.04 DVD (from Ubuntu book) to wipe out the Win XP and then install 9,04 over the entire hard drive. I then upgraded to 9.10 using the option on update manager. I gave my normal logon all privileges, but I can use synaptic and other functions such as changing update parameters w/o logging on as root. If attempt same from my logon, PC crashes.

I upgraded my old ubuntu 8.04 to 10 LTS, after all the downloading and installing is done the system is then rebooted and this appeared on screen for more than an hour theres no activity..
upto now iam waiting theres no activity on my machine.. is this normal?
I am trying to get Ubuntu up and running on my Dell XPS 400 desktop. I verified the checksum of the iso (ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso) I downloaded, and I ran the cd check before installing. I also ran a memtest for 16 hours with no errors.
So I install Ubuntu, and everything seems ok. Now, I try to update my software packages, and the upgrade always fails after all the packages are downloaded (sometime during actual installation). So, I have to reboot, and the file system will not mount. I run fsck and reboot, and now I cannot even boot normally or to a shell... This has happened to me twice in row.
What is the best plan of attack when a package fails to install midway? I want to use Ubuntu, but this is making it pretty hard.

I'm attempting to install Lucid on a new Acer Timeline X 5820T and having a tons of problems.
First of, I've got no internet connection either wired or wirelessly.
I've found several posts claiming that the ethernet card just needs a driver installed to work correctly.
However, to make the driver I need build essential installed, but no problem, I've got my CD, I'll just install them from the CD.
However, when I attempt to install them through synanptic it tells me that it:

File not found why it can't fetch the cdrom? Ubuntu recognizes it and I can browse it just fine.
So I've installed a dependency from source since I needed to customize its config (couldn't figure out how to do this to a package). Synaptic doesn't recognize that it's installed and the program I want to install wants to reinstall this dependency. Specifically, I'm trying to get Kdenlive, and FFmpeg is the dependency.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a little problem on my relatively newly installed 10.10 Lubuntu that I can't quite figure out. I'm guessing it is a piece of cake for most of you ubuntu-veterans so I'm hoping a kind soul would save my day: The last couple of weeks, the apt-get update (and corresponding button in synaptic) does not manage to update all of my repositories, and I get a "404 not found" error at the end (see attached text file (hope I did that right, am a longtime lurker but haven't posted anything much yet)).
I realize that I have been doing some adding of repositories, and have written the wrong command a couple of times, which may be the cause of this (at least the two frescobaldi ppa errors). What I don't understand, is how I remove these faulty(?) repositories, so that my system stops claiming being unupdated. After searching/googling the issue I tried looking for the corresponding entries in sources.lst, but to no avail.
ps. my system is in german, the messages say "W: Failure when getting.." and "E: some index files could not be downloaded, they were ignored or others were used in their place". (rather badly translated)
