Ubuntu Installation :: 10.10 Freezing At Start Up After Installing Updates

Nov 29, 2010

i have been running Ubuntu 10.10 for about a month or so now without any major problems and last night the update manager popped up like it does with some upgrades i needed to install. So i installed them and clicked restart to install updates. When i restarted and logged in, i clicked firefox, the loading bubble popped up and then froze (note: freezes when using transmission, empathy, and various other apps not just firefox) . I kept restarting and never made it past 5 minutes without it freezing up. So i booted into windows removed everything linux, reinstalled it, and everything worked like normal. Then did the updates again and same exact thing after restarting.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Updates Returns To Main Window Without Installing Updates

Mar 24, 2011

For some reason Update Manager is not installing updates as of yesterday.I have it set to check daily and notify if updates are available. It has been working without issues for well over a year now.

Update Manager tells me updates are available and presents the list of security, recommended, and other updates. All are selected to update, but when I select Install Updates in Update Manager it returns with a Reading Package Information window overlaid on the main Update Manager window - building dependency tree then reading state information and dumps me back to the main Update Manager window without performing any update actions.

Ubuntu Installation :: Mouse Freezing After Installing 10.10?

Nov 25, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx) Random Freeze / Hang-up It's been a while since I last posted. Just to update, I originally ran Ubuntu 10.04 for a couple of days before giving up on it before switching to Xubuntu Lucid (10.04) - which, in 3 months of solid use never fell over once.

A week ago I did a fresh install of Xubuntu 10.10 on the exact same machine, and guess what?, not a single hiccup either in nearly a weeks' uptime. As explained before, I simply don't know why Gnome falls over on my machine and XFCE doesn't - I'm mystified. But at least my machine's stable enough to actually get some work done, and that's all that really matters to me.

PS: NO, I haven't tried Ubuntu 10.10 yet, who knows, maybe it would actually work on my rig???.. but honestly, I've fallen in love with XFCE - the simplicity & configurability is awesome, best DE out there by a country mile...

what is the difference between the various forms of ubuntu - Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu, and from people's experience, which is the most stable (well the one at least that won't keep freezing etc)? It's getting quite frustrating now with my mouse freezing continually and there just does not seem a simple solution to the problem!
I use a Dell desktop C521, with AMD processor, and windows XP SP3 installed on it. So I got the ubuntu 10.10 CD, slotted it in and just followed the instructions to get ubuntu installed side-by-side with windows (ie. dual boot option).

General :: Ubuntu 9.10 Started Freezing Randomly After Last Updates

Feb 23, 2010

What's even weirder is it unlocks when I press power on my desktop. When it freezes, I have several windows opened, and I'm switching between windows. I can still move the mouse, but cant click anywhere. Cant select anything yet there are still cursors flashing (text editor or terminal). The only thing that will unfreeze everything is the signal from pressing power (not rebooting, just quickly pressing power).

Fedora :: FC13: New Updates Cause Freezing At Boot?

Performed the daily update, don't recall which packages were available, and the boot process freezes near the end upon trying to start my VNC server. Using rescue disk removed tiger-vnc server. Oddly upon reboot, selinux reset the files even though initial setting was 'permissive'. have not tried re-installed vnc yet.

Ubuntu Installation :: Created After Installing Updates Using 'update Manager'

Oct 8, 2010

I started using ubuntu 10.04 LTS on my Dell Studio 15 laptop. Installing ubuntu has never been this easy! I used CD which used WUBIInstaller to install Ubuntu. Then I restarted my machine and selected Ubuntu from 'OS selection screen'.

I connected to my wireless broadband in few minutes and found a pop-up of 'update manager' showing 305 new updates to be download and to be installed. I installed all updates worth 370 MB and in middle got an pop-up of GRUB telling me to configure GRUB on some path. I just selected that path and clicked on FORWARD button. Then installation of updates got over and it asked me to restart machine. I restarted machine but on OS selection screen, when i selected Ubuntu it didn't boot Ubuntu but instead machine restarted again. I'm not able to boot into Ubuntu.

Fedora :: My System Start Freezing

May 31, 2011

I just did a fresh install of Fedora 15 last weekend. Since then I haven't had any problems with it except of course a few bug reports every now and then.Today, out of the blue, my system start freezing, giving me no choice but to hard reboot. As a particularity when the system freezes I can still move the cursor on the screen but everything else seizes to respond. It happens every time within 10 minutes after reboot, and even sooner if I launch the internet browser (behaves the same with both Firefox and Epiphany) or if I open a video file.

General :: Installs Keep Freezing Before They Start - Debian - Linuxmint - Ubuntu

Apr 15, 2010

I have been trying to install linux on my HP pavillion 511w for several days. The first I tried to install was debian, it didn't freeze but it kept saying unable to mount cdrom drive. (This may have been from an incorrect jumper setting that I later changed.) I haven't tried debian since changing the jumper.

I next tried ubuntu 10.04 beta 2, all it did was go to a ubuntu flash screen that never stopped cycling these small round "lights".

I then tried the "stable" ubuntu 9.10. This went to a screen with several options for installing ubuntu, checking the disk etc. No matter what I selected it would just freeze. Since this is my first install I wasn't sure if this was normal or not so I waited several hours and still nothing, after enough time I concluded it must have been frozen. But before I continue wasting time waiting for hours can someone tell me... when installing these linux versions is there a sign that it is loading, booting, or installing the OS? I figure it must have a status bar or something, but want to make sure.

I next tried linux mint 8. It did the same thing, went to a sceen with several options and when I select something it says "loading" at the bottom with a blinking cursor, but of course it never loads anything, just sits there. This one throws me off a bit because it says its loading and the cursor blinks but it just doesn't seem like it is actually doing anything.

I have also downloaded ubuntu 8 which I plan to try next. I've tried changing the boot/install options by pushing F6 or whatever it was.

The computer is an older system that I never use because its so slow running XP. I thought linux would run faster and I could get some use out of it while learning/experimenting with linux. I always have to have projects to keep my mind working, but constantly failing at the starting line is not much fun.

Fedora :: System Keeps Freezing During Start Up And Shutdown?

Jul 21, 2011

I've just installed F15 KDE Edition, and as the title tells, I need to keep pressing F2 and/or Enter to make the system go through the boot up process, otherwise it freezes as long as i keep it without my interference !! and then it takes relatively long time to start the GUI, and when I switch to the console (using ALT + CTRL + F3 for example) and try to write the login or the password, there seem to be some 'bouncing' effect, that if I'm to write the login 'root', I get something like 'rrooott' ... however, this doesn't happen in the GUI .....

I have a multiboot system, with Windows7 and Linux Mint (based on ubuntu 10.4) installed along side. While Windows7 doesn't have any problem with my hardware, Linux mint has also some issues that cause the performance of media players to degrade (sound and video tearing) and cause repeated freezes to some applications (a game actually, 'wesnoth') until I press a key or move the mouse.

I have AMD Athlon 7750 dual core 2.7 GHz system, with 3GB DDR2 800 Ram, and embedded ATI Radeon HD 3200 with about 512 shared memory.

one more thing, when I booted off the live image to run the install program, I booted into the video failsafe mode (not sure of the exact name, but I think you got it, no mode setting) and passed the option 'noapic', so I suppose this options are still passed whenever I boot mysystem, as I get the text version of the progress bar during startup, rather then the graphical fedora logo ( i.e no mode setting) ..

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Start Kde After Installing ATI Radeon 3450

Aug 23, 2010

I can't get kde to start. I boot through the blue ubuntu 10.04 splash screen normally, so my video card is putting out something, but then i drop into a tty terminal. I log on ok, but when i do startkde from the command line i get a message saying can't connect to xserver, when i do startx, i get these errors: (i can't stuff them here cuz i don't have a mouse or a cut and paste ability)EE) NVIDIA:

Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module.
.
.
EE) No drivers available.

But here's the backstory: I have a ASUS M3N78 PRO MB with an on board Nvidia GeForce 8300 graphics capability. It was intermittently failing, so i disconnected it put in an ATI RADEON PowerColor HD 3450 graphics card, and then my problems started. Seems to me I must have the Nvidia driver since i can boot to KDE fine using the Nvidia onboard analog output (at least some of the time).

Supposedly Lucid Lynx has the ATI drivers for my card preinstalled, plus the new card does drive the splash screen. Is there some clash in some script between the Nvidia on the MB and my ATI Card? I upgraded to GRUB2, reconfigured xserver-xorg, tried to run jockey from the command line and failed, tried sudo nvidia-xconfig. Nothing changed anything.

Fedora Installation :: Installing With Yum - Start A .RPM Get Message ?

Feb 2, 2009

I've recently installed Fedora 10 on a space computer. It works fine until I tried to install Mplayer.

As i've read on a number of sites that there is a dependency problem, I went through loads of websites looking for a fix. I found nothing that would work.

Now i'm stuck with a problem that i think might be worse. If I start a .RPM I get the following message.

Now when i try to install other things it's hit and miss, I tried to install VLC and got the same message.

I've got no idea what i've done to get to this point and i don't really want to reinstall fedora 10 again.

I seem to be having alot of issues with updates messing up some part of my system lately.

BUT then, as usual, the system prompted me to install updates. Once I was done installing them and rebooted the computer I was back at the (initramfs) prompt.
