I have installed ubuntu on my second hd, the size of is 500 GB.The live Ubuntu cd installation have used only 250 GB, the rest remains as NTFS system. And now I do need more space on my home folder, I would like to convert the 250 GB NTFS to Linux system and add it to my home folder. But I don't know how. I have looked at Disk Utilities, I have not found this possibility.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using Ubuntu in a laptop. The C disk has 15GB, and Windows is installed in C disk. I installed Netbook Ubuntu in D disk which only has 10GB free space. Now I am trying to install some applications in ubuntu such as emacs. But the system says it only has about 450Mb disk space. So how could I get more space? Can I install the applications under some different path? without using apt-get?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWas installing wine 1.2.2 on ubuntu 10.10 my home folder had 60GB of free space before the installation started I chose to install manually. I installed all the dependencies manually from terminal. Then compiled wine 1.2.2 from the source code using ./configue make While running the 'make' process my 60GB home folder ran out of disk space. The make process was non ending. Ultimately it got aborted due to lack of space. Can't retrieve disk space that was lost since then. Tried with terminal commands like
apt-get clean
apt-get autoclean
apt-get autoremove
Even tried to get into the wine source folder from terminal and use 'make uninstall' Nothing works and I now have only 50Mb of disk space on my home folder
Below you'll see that my home server is currently maxed with something hidden.I noticed that my machine was maxed so i ran a du on / to see where the issue was happening. I freed up 6gbs so far and ~ciaranw keeps eating up any free disk space. But when i look to see what in the folder could be doing this, i get nothing back that accounts for the currently 19gbs thereI've been a long time user of forums but never found the need to actually post seeing as my problem was usually covered, this problem has stumped my googling prowess

Even risking the removal of some questionable items I just don't see freeing up this much space to make it happen.Is there another way to install 10.04?Is there a way to increase the space allocation to root?Stupid question but, can I delete the image file for 2.6.31-20 without affecting the 2.6.31-20 version? Clearly /usr has loads of space here...and I dont know /home is mounted with which partiton...I read somewhere that tune2fs command could be useful here...I dont want to experiment and mess up here..
I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I have a server that sends instructions to 20 clients to perform certain tasks. The clients send gigs of data back to the server for storage.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Network: Gigabit Ethernet
Clients: (20) HP, Solaris, Linux
Linux Server: Dell R805 PowerEdge (QUAD Core Athlons 16 gigs of ram, 4 gigabit ports.
Selected directories are mounted (NFS) by clients. One directory to be mounted by the clients contains executable files. Mount commands are sent from the server (rsh) to the clients. Yes I know (ssh) but this is how the software was originally written so let's go with it.
The clients then receive commands to execute the binaries contained within the mounted directory. The binaries basically create an image of the clients filesystem including special applications. The client then sends the files and directories to the server which stores this �image�. This process can be reversed to restore a client to the initial baseline image.
In a nut shell, 20 clients are sending gigs of data to the server for storage. I need to attach a NAS (gigabit) to extend the storage capability of the server. The server would mount (NFS) to the hard drives on the NAS. The NAS, configured as a �direct attached storage� device (DAS), means the storage device is connected directly to the server and not the network (which makes it a DAS). This would provide direct storage expansion for the server. However, this configuration cannot be a bottleneck that significantly hinders performance.
Clients <---data---->Server<----storage---->DAS/NAS
1) Will a low end NAS (gigabit port) work? (NetGear 1TB ReadyNAS Duo, RND2110-100NAS) or something with a higher rated throughput (QNAP TS-239 Pro II)
2) Low end won't work, go with �?
3) Does the processor on the NAS play any role that would determine the performance of this configuration given that the server would mount directly to a directory on this device (DAS/NAS)?
upon browsing the home folder in my ubuntu system, i came across a hidden cache folder..
it occupied around 700 mb of space..and im falling short of space..
can i delete the contents in the folder? are they safe to delete?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?

Installed Ubuntu along with Debian on my Notebook and use Grub Manager to choose between them on startup. Since i like Debian now a lot (in past days it was a very hard system to handle, but there has been some progress i noticed), i have to change some things (want Debian as main system now) For Ubuntu i have: (was meant to be main system on Notebook) "/", "/home" and a "swap" partition, but since i am now going to use mainly Debian, i wanted to store my files all in the "/home"-folder of my extended Ubuntu partition (has much more space available) not in the "/home" folder of the Debian system. So i want both (Debian and Ubuntu) to use the same extended partition ("/home") which i created for Ubuntu to save their files like downloads, videos, and so on.
View 14 Replies View RelatedHaving been converted to using "Linux" about 8 months ago, and gaining confidence to try different distros, and figuring out how to 'keep' my Home folder, I've had great fun trying them out and learning as I go. The latest distro I'm trying is Kubuntu, which I really like and will keep for a while. However, when I was partitioning in the set-up, I omitted to create my home folder. Instead I now have is a partition the size of my "old" home folder, and to which I have to sign into to gain access. The files are all there so that is no problem.
1. What i would like to know is if this set-up is OK, or should I change it so that it is actually in the home folder (if so how?( a re-install?))
2. If I should decide to try out another distro in the future will this be safe to change to "home"?.
