Oct 8, 2010I just upgraded to Maverick yesterday. When I used to compose a new email I was able to add my email signature to it via a little drop down menu in the compose window. Where has it gone? I can't see any way at all to add my signature to my emails.

If I go to preferences and try to add a signature or signature script the textbox goes from slightly blue to white but I can't enter any text or paste anything in it. I also noticed that it won't let be check the box for signature above previous message.
Is it broken or am I missing something?

Oct 23, 2010I'm running TB 3.1.5. Images do not display in emails. There is no "Display Images" button. Where the images would be, I only get a broke image icon (the little torn page). I don't know if this is a Ubuntu specific issue, but I thought I'd post here because the community is so responsive. I have tried the solution at this site, but though the mail.default_html_action value is set to 3, I still have no luck. [URL]

Jun 21, 2011When I click on a hyperlink inside a PDF, email (Thunderbird), or other document (ex. AbiWord, LibreOffice) Firefox attempts to launch and it shows in the gnome2 panel (in the window manager with all the other applications) but when I click on it in the window manager to un-minimize/focus Firefox the browser crashes. Odd thing is this is only a problem if the browser is not yet open. If I have previously launched Firefox then click an external link it opens in a new tab just fine. I upgraded from Firefox 4 to 5 and the problem persists. I've only recently noticed this so it could be the result of something I did (installed/uninstalled) though I don't know what I could have done. Or, maybe I never noticed because I almost always have an open browser window.

May 26, 2011I'm having some major issues with "Iceweasel" on Debian 6.0.1 (squeeze). I've done some extensive google searching but can't really find anything on this issue.
Basically, Iceweasel simply won't follow some links. It seems to spin for a second and then remain on the same page. I haven't been able to find any correlation between the type/style of links and whether or not the browser will work correctly or not when the link is clicked. Also, sometimes if I have multiple tabs open, I'll open gmail in a new tab and it will do nothing. If I exit the app and restart with one new tab, it will correctly bring up gmail (does this with other sites too gmail is just an example).
I actually use Chrome for most stuff now but need FF/Iceweasel for PHP debugging (a Zend Studio plugin not available in Chrome).

I've thought about just installing Firefox but seems I have to do it manually and I'm not convinced that it would make a difference as supposedly the code is the same (?). I may just try it anyway as I'm out of ideas.

Debian :: Opera On Lenny Doesn't Recognize Hyperlinks
Mar 22, 2009I've got a box running Etch which seems to have a bad memory controller (I get segmentation faults left, right and centre) so I've built a new 'puter with twice the CPU power (2.4Ghz Intel Q6600 vs Athlon 1000+) and four times the RAM (2Gig vs 512M). I downloaded Lenny three days ago and, apart from some screen resolution issues which I've been discussing in the Newbie forum, most things have been working just fine.
However, I downloaded Opera yesterday (opera_9.64.2480.gcc4.qt3_i386.deb - same version I've been using on the Etch box) and I've seen some strange behaviour. A lot of sites, this one for example, work as expected, but if I go to, for example, www.bbc.co.uk or www.guardian.co.uk, the hyperlinks don't work, the cursor doesn't change to a hand when I hover over the links and clicking over the links doesn't do anything. The same pages work normally using Opera on my Etch box so it seems to be an issue with Lenny, or maybe Gnome on Lenny (I have KDE on the Etch box).

Jul 26, 2010I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).
Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.
My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.
General :: Concatenate Several Images Into A PDF File With Several Images Per Page
May 2, 2011I know that ImageMagick's convert program can be used as follows to convert a collection of images -- say, in PNG format -- to a PDF file:
convert *png output.pdf
The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

Sep 21, 2009I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others.And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.
Or am a missing something here? Does this exist?It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

I want to be able to intersperse my replies within a quoted reply i.e. if the email had three paragraphs, I'd like to be able to have my replies between each of the paragraphs. At the moment, I don't seem to be able to do anything other than delete from the quoted section - I try to simulate my requirements by cutting and then 'paste quotation', but this doesn't always work as sometimes Evolution adds too many levels of '> ' .

Feb 24, 2011we had a server with Hostway, and it was running ubuntu. The server also had Plesk installed, which did some funny things. We had several websites on that server, and many email addresses. Then we changed servers. Now we have a server through Rackspace and it is also running Ubuntu. It also has Virtualmin installed, which generally does not impose as many unconventional changes on Ubuntu as Plesk did.
Rather than using Thunderbird to download my email (which is what I used to do) I've decided I'll start reading my email on the server. So I will ssh to the server and then use some email client, such as Alpine, to read the email. So I installed Alpine. I have an email account for "lawrence". The email address is lawrence @ krubner. Currently, when mail arrives for that account, it is stored here:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new
and then it is transferred to hear:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur
When I start Alpine, while logged in as lawrence, Alpine automatically sets up an inbox for me here:
/home/lawrence/mail/
How do I get Alpine (or any other client) to read from the correct folder? I'm fairly sure the email package (the MTA) at work on this new server is Postfix. As near as I can tell, my email is held for 24 hours in this folder:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/new
and then it gets transferred here:
/home/krubner/homes/lawrence/Maildir/cur
Alpine only lets me set one path for my Inbox, so I'm not sure what path I should set. If I use "cur" I will see all email 1 day late, but if I use "new" then I will miss email if I go a day without checking.

I know postfix can do this with a bcc_always option. Im sure exim4 should be able to also.

Apr 5, 2010I'm trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my machine which already has Windows 7 (I want to be able to dual-boot). I had no problems installing Ubuntu but now I cannot boot Windows, I get this error after selecting Windows in the Grub boot menu:
Error: invalid signature
Press any key to continue
When I press a key I'm returned to the Grub menu. There I can boot Linux without problems. I have two 500 GB disks in a RAID 1 array. Windows 7 is installed there. Then I have a 1.5 TB disk where I installed Linux in a partition I created for it. I think the problem may be that I have RAID because this seems to show up as two disks and not one:
more /boot/grub/device.map
(hd0) /dev/sda
(hd1) /dev/sdb
(hd2) /dev/sdc
Three disks and not two.
If I do sudo update-grub I get this:
