Ubuntu :: Icons For Subdirectories Of User's Folder?
Nov 24, 2010
I figured I'd try out the Ubuntu Minimal install; I liked the concept of minimal distros like Arch-Linux (with a what-you-need-is-what-you-get type of system), but I really liked the community and general support of Ubuntu. Anyway, everything went fine after I got GRUB working properly, up to the point when I found that there were no subdirectories in my user's folder (Templates, Documents, Videos, etc).
I just decided to create the folders I needed. However, there were two issues I came across when doing this: The items in the 'Templates' folder don't show up in the context menu like they should More importantly, the icons for each folder would have to be manually changed for every new icon theme (if I wanted to use a new icon theme, I would have to navigate to the theme's folder every time for each icon I wanted changed) I'm not too concerned with the templates at the moment, but I was wondering how I would make these icons dependent on the current icon theme. Is there some package I missed installing?
By the way, if it makes a difference, I'm trying to set up the default Humanity icon set (well, not default for me, since I'm using Ubuntu Minimal). Also, sorry if this question has been posted before (or if I find the solution immediately after posting, which almost always happens to me), I didn't know exactly what to search for...

When I position icons on the desktop in specific places, then I choose to move a file or folder into another folder, all the icons arrange back to the left side. This happened in an earlier version of KDE 4.x, disappeared the next version, and reappeared. how to keep this from happening. It makes using the desktop a pain in the you know what.

This question is very similar to this one except that I want to maintain the file's original subdirectories.
For example if I had
/temp/a/a.txt
/temp/a/a.jpg
/temp/a/b.txt
/temp/b/c.txt
/temp/d/d.txt
/temp/d/d.jpg
/temp/d/e.txt
/temp/f.txt
[Code]...

I need to give a user write access to /var/www and its subdirectories. The current directory permissions are as follows:rwx r-x r-x root root
I added the user to the root group but that didn't seem to help.I read I could chmod -R to change the access to write for the www directory and subdirectories but I don't want to change things and mess up the website. How can I give the user access to write to the www directory and subdirectories without messing anything up? Would changing the www directory group owner to his group cause an issue anywhere?

I wanted to create an user but don't allow it to see the other user's home folder so I made chmod 0750 /home/folder and it worked fine so I went ahead and decided to completely forbid access to the root folder and I had the "great" idea to make chmod 0750 /, and now I'm having problems with wine and other applications, in example I used to have a folder in this address 209.239.114.51/mmgr but now it's giving me errors and if I try to run some applications I got error "There was an error creating the child process for this terminal"

I'm using Ubuntu Studio 10.10 and I was installing some programs the other night. After I had finished installing the programs, the folder icons (and their respective windows) changed to this god-awful beige colour. I'm using the "UbuntuStudio" theme which has these nice glossy blue folders by default, but they've changed as I said to this ugly colour that, quite frankly, sickens me.
I've gone into the Appearance Preferences and tried to work it out there, but no matter what I do, the folders never change.
If any of you know how I can fix this.

I mistakenly moved the /home/user/Desktop file to another location so now when my desktop starts it used the entire contents of my /home/user/ directory (except for the hidden contents) to create icons all over my desktop.
I have restored the Desktop folder to the correct location but it ignores it now and continues to show every file under /home/user as an icon.
How do I reset it to point to the original Desktop folder?
(Using 64-bit Ubuntu)

I've recently acquire a new HDD and I've decided to use it for multimedia files.
So I've edited my fstab so it mounts this disk at startup.
What's more important, I've bind the folders in that disk (i.e. media/theDisk/Music) to a folder in my home directory (i.e. /home/me/Music) so I can have all the folder mounted at home (Mount the disk in /home/user is not possible because Nautilus start to whim about not being able to set some files in .nautilus or something, I believe its because it does not know which disk to save to or something like that)
So everything works fine, except for folder icons. When I open the home directory, all folders in the disk are shown with the Desktop default icon. Even if I change them (whether from home or from the mounted disk) the next time I open the home directory they are shown with the Desktop icon. Emblems are lost too.

I'm keeping my documents, music, and videos etc. on a separate partition from my home directory, formatted with encrypted fat32 so that I can access it from both my windows and my ubuntu installation. So I've made the folders, transferred the files, and I selected custom icons (by right-click, properties, click on custom icon, then select the file from /usr/share/icons/Humanity/places/4.
So far so good. The problem is that the custom icons don't appear in the Places sidebar in Nautilus or the main Places menu in gnome. It just comes up as a regular folder.
See a screenshot of it here.
Does anyone have an idea/workaround so that I can use my custom icons in the Places menu as well? I have tried it with scalable icons, with no difference. I've also tried looking for a configuration file which might have the details in, but I haven't found it - I suppose this probably has something to do with how the Places menu is automatically generated.
I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala with Gnome.

First user, everything still normal. All other users and any added users basically have no desktop now. Background and arrow are there, but no right-click no panels. Have tried every option in other similar posts including deleting .config, .gnome2, etc files. Also tried all the commands at URL..I can login user with xterm session and launch gnome-panel, which provides some functionality, but this basically sucks, because there is no window manager. I have tried changing themes and various compiz stuff, but no success yet. Even removed and reinstalled compiz.

Recently I setup a system for a non-technical user. He is only using Firefox, Pidgin and OpenOffice for about 2 hours a day. I have created a folder "/home/jim/myFiles" where he can save his document files. But Jim has accidentally deleted his myFiles folder on 2 occasions. He had intended to delete a file in that folder. Is there a way to lock the folder so that the user and create/read/write documents in that folder but not delete the folder itself?

I just installed 11.4 on an old hard drive, probably with 11.3.
All works well, but I can't get the nice icons for user login in kdm.
Of course, I tried to change this in kde system config, but with no result. In fact what I do there do not change anything.
I suspect some sort of permission problem, but how can I simply reset all the global kde settings (The problem arise before login)

I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

I've looked around and haven't been able to really understand how to do this yet.How can I set up a SSH user to access a single folder (and it's subfolders) on my system.I want to give my brother access to a folder under /media/Data/FilesBut I don't want him to access any other part of my system.I've set up a user (using useradd and gave him a password but no home directory).I want to have him use SSH to log in to my machine, start in the /media/Data/Files directory, and not be able to get out of that directory - but add/change/delete/etc any of the files.

I recently added another user to my system. My principal user has ID=1000 the new user has ID=1001, they both belong to the group id 1000.
I have an NTFS partition that I am now able to mount for both the users at boot with this line in the fstab:
Code:
UUID=F472BDC372BD8ABE /media/OS ntfs-3g quiet,defaults,uid=1000,rw,utf8 0 0
The point is that if I don't put the option
Code:
uid=1000
I cannot move files to trash but only delete them if I put it I can move files to trash but only if I am logged in as the user with ID=1000 I have tried to change the option and use the groups logic instead of the users (groups are there for this purpose aren't them?) and change the option into
Code:
uid=1000
since both the users belong to group 1000
but the result is that in this way none of them can trash anything (only delete permanently) I have also tried to create a .Trash-1001 folder did not work either
Is there a way to be able to use a Trash folder (or different trash folders I don't mind) and be able to trash files for different users in NTFS?
how the fstab line would look like?
