Ubuntu :: How To Set The Correct Jre

Oct 26, 2010

java -version gives the following:

java version "1.5.0"
gij (GNU libgcj) version 4.4.3
Yet javac -version gives the following:
javac 1.6.0_22

How do I configure the default jre to the correct version? I cannot even find linux version of jre, only jdk, which I installed already.

Ubuntu :: Have Got Correct Driver?

Apr 10, 2010

I need a driver for a USB2.0 card with a Via chipset on Xubuntu 9.10. I have just visited the Via website and tried Linux Portal, and I found the following available for download: Unified GFX driver Ver 86a-50937 for Ubuntu 9.04(26Oct09) (3.4M). Two questions. One, does this cover USB? Two, it is listed for 9.04, would this cover 9.10 as well?

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Does Not Use Correct Resolution

Apr 4, 2011

I recently set up Kubuntu for my parents, and its working fine, other than the screen resolution. When I log in, it uses 800x600 when it should be using 1280x1024. I've tried to generate/ edit xorg.conf, but Kubuntu doesn't seem to pay attention to it. Also, I don't know if it matters, but it seems to be detecting a second screen that doesn't exist (see picture). That "monitor" can only go up to 800x600, but when I disabled it, it stayed off. When it was on and I pressed identify monitors, however, it put both labels on the main monitor. Here's the picture of the two monitors:

Ubuntu :: Which Used RAM Monitor Is Correct

Jul 14, 2011

I had to remove Xubuntu desktop and went back to pure gnome. Using 10.04 on this computer. The whole thing started to work very very slow. Anyway back in gnome I get these readings in free -m command:

Code:
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 228 226 2 0 10 86
-/+ buffers/cache: 129 99
Swap: 668 1 667

Then I used top command and got this:
Code:
top - 21:49:36 up 4 min, 2 users, load average: 0.86, 1.02, 0.48
Tasks: 155 total, 1 running, 154 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
Cpu(s): 11.9%us, 4.6%sy, 0.0%ni, 83.2%id, 0.3%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
Mem: 234476k total, 224660k used, 9816k free, 11596k buffers
Swap: 685048k total, 2152k used, 682896k free, 82564k cached

Finally I tried the system monitor and it said
Memory:126.6 MiB (55,3%) of 229 MiB
Swap: 2.1 MiB (0.03%) of 669 MiB

Yesterday memory was below 100. so which one is true and which one is lying? System now otherwise works fine. Quite fast actually even with more programs open.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Correct The Web Addresses

I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 with Ubuntu Karmic that was working like a charm until last week. When I'm using my college's wireless I can browse just fine, but when I'm in my home's network the web addresses cannot be resolved.I was suspecting of DNS error, but it's the same DNS address in all the other computers, and the whole network is working just fine. The thing is that if I use the IPs, for instance 64.233.163.104 for Google, it works fine, both pinging and browsing. So the problem is in resolving the addresses...

But when calling blkid this device is missing.Trying to mount /home I get the error:mount: special device UUID=... does not exist. In other threads I have read that the UUID-entry for /home in /etc/fstab has to be corrected. I am running a laptop with a windows partition and a ubuntu partition. I partitioned from windows, then setup the linux partition from the ubuntu cd and formatted it to ext4. Ubuntu :: Correct Way To Upgrade To Firefox 3.6?

Jan 27, 2010

Right now I'm running Jaunty with Firefox 3.0. That's what it comes with. I tried adding FF3.6 using some instructions, adding the repository etc.. But, that was aimed at Karmic users and it triggured all sorts of dependency errors in Synaptic. So things got a bit screwed up. God knows what version I have installed now but it sure isn't 3.6! So tomorrow I plan to do a clean install of of Jaunty. Then I'd like to upgrade to Firefox 3.6. What is the correct and clean way of doing that, adding the correct repository this time? I want to replace 3.0 with 3.6 not have both versions on my system.

Ubuntu :: Kpackagekit Was Rejecting (correct!) Password

Jan 12, 2010

The problem: when kpackagekit would prompt me to update packages, it would ask for my password. I would enter it, and the dialog would reject it with the message "incorrect password, please try again". Over and over. The password WAS correct -- it worked in Synaptic and on the command line using sudo, and obviously it also worked for logging in.

I suddenly had a hunch that kpackagekit might not be the culprit, and that authentication was being done by a different program -- and lo and behold, the dialog actually said policykit up there...

So, searching for policykit problems out there, I ended up seeing someone reinstalling theirs for their problem (which happened to be different from mine). The code to do that, in the command line:

Code:
sudo apt-get install --reinstall policykit

After that, entering the password after kpackagekit prompts me to has worked fine and the updates happen as nature intended.

Ubuntu :: Debootstrap Does Not Get Correct Package Repository?

After installing pbuilder and the other dpkg essential packages I've run "sudo pbuilder create", noticed the message of the repo and since I am no longer in Bulgaria, interrupted the script, went to synaptic and changed the repo from there (now is http://archive.linux.duke.edu/ubuntu/). Even rebooted. Double-checked in synaptic the repo is still changed, grepped the files in /etc/apt for "bg" and all results were commented. I ran again "sudo pbuilder create" and it still reports the old repo.

So where does debootstrap reads the repo setting from and how to fix it?
