my netbook's hard drive has probably lost some data due to some bad sectors. Linux won't boot, no errors displayed at all.i can boot Ubuntu only from a USB stick i have created last month. Can i use it to fix disk and operating system errors ?

Then I formatted the partition again and reinstalled ubuntu. Since then while it's booting, I get the message Disk boot failure insert system disk and press enter. I tried reinstalling many times, but I still get this message..
View 6 Replies View RelatedI bought a t770.uk HP desktop PC, which came without a Hard drive as the pervious owner had removed it for security reasons. A week later I got a hold of a brand new - out of an anti-static sealed bag - compatible Western Digital Caviar SE 80GB SATA150 7200 HDD, and installed it as directed by my t770.uk manual. Up until now, things looked to be on a roll. As I don't have any windows OS, I figured Ubunutu would be the way to go (and it certainly is from what I've heard and read about it. I can't wait!).
So I sent off for a CD and it popped through my mail a few weeks back. The problem that I am having is after booting past a very brief view of the HP POST screen, the screen goes black with the error "Disc boot failure-insert system disk and press enter". I've tried placing the Ubuntu disc in (assuming it is asking for that? An OS disc) and restarting, and changing the boot order around, but no matter what I do the error persists and I can't install Ubuntu. I really want to get this PC running with Ubuntu.
My system decided to crash on me, hard. It was humming along happily for about 2 months and now doesn't boot. If I boot from hard-disk, I get grub. Launching the first kernel choice hangs. I thought maybe the install was corrupt, so I booted from usb install disk. The usb hdd didn't boot; something about an error trying to access /dev/sda . Unplugging the internal disk and plugging in the usb install disk does result in the system booting. Plugging in the internal disk in a running system usb-booted system does not result in the system detecting the disk.
How do I know if the disk is physically broken? This seems unlikely since it does manage to launch grub consistently. Or is this still possible? How can I try to mount whatever is left? The usb install disk doesn't even list the /dev/sd*. Any pointers on how to reformat the drive if it's not being mounted?
I accidentally deleted the main default menu panel at top of desktop.Is there a way to recover it.where in the system would I find the various icons that are located in it.A list of the icons in each category?Or do I need to use the installation disk and repair / reinstall?

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).
I was using the disk utility on Ubuntu 10.04 and wanted to make by 500GB external NTFS formatted USB drive into 1 x 50GB FAT32 and 1 x 450GB NTFS. I clicked the option that said format or create a partition and it basically wiped the whole thing in a split second leaving me with 500GB of seemingly empty space. Obviously the files are still there but I cannot boot the drive to view anything. I have downloaded testdisk, but don't know how to use it, but I am sure there is a relatively simple solution here. I am currently repairing the boot sector of the drive as Test Disk showed the drive as "no type" i.e. not FAT/NTFS/ext4 etc., but shows the correct amount of used space though, but I cannot view anything err go, I cannot use the undelete command as yet.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a hard drive where one partition is used as part of a logical volume (LV) using LVM. The partition table is corrupted and prevents the partitions from showing as devices in /dev/. The corruption prevents the logical volume from coming on-line b/c LVM cannot find the part on the corrupted disk. I (am pretty sure) I know the block offsets and lengths for each partition on the disk but do not want to write to the disk in case I am wrong.
How do I go about recovering the logical volume in this scenario?
On startup I heard a 'click' around the time "loading hardware modules" and "loading kernel drivers" was showing on the monitor. Then all the system sounds became fuzzy (corrupted?). Other sounds, such as VLC playing a music station, are fine.

OK, so about a week ago or so my Ubuntu 10.04 install no longer recognizes my iPod Touch or Iphone. I have had no luck getting them to work. i REALLY do not want to fresh install Ubuntu. Is there a way I can like repair or restore (a la "Window$") that will fix the OS itself without removing any programs or settings?

Well yesterday this disk just would not mount.
Read through related posts but nothing seemed to work. Even tried it on a Windows machine.
Tried TestDisk utility. Found nothing wrong with the drive, but still could not repair the MBR.log code...
Palimpsest Utility recognized the drive, but just will not let me do anything with it except format it.
How can i repair the partitions and MBR without losing all my data?
I'm using Ubuntu Lucid and any sudden power loss will usually cause problems with the file system. When I bring the computer back up, Ubuntu will then scan for errors at boot-time and if any errors are found it prompts me to select whether to repair or ignore them. I would much rather have it select the repair option automatically so that I don't have to be physically present.The reason for this is that i have a web server that should come back online automatically after a power loss.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI booted up Ubuntu after a couple weeks of downtime. I think it had just installed updates before I shut it down. It seemed fine. I started updating it, then it started giving me a bunch of errors about the root file system being mounted read only, so I had to reboot. I've heard that it does that if the file system is corrupted or there is a hard disk failure. When I rebooted, it kernel panicked on all but the oldest kernel which did a fsck and rebooted. Then I was able to get back in, but most of my panel applets are gone and cannot be restored, it fails to start x at boot with no errors and I have to start it myself from the command line, it is unable to do updates, samba is gone, whenever I update-grub to add Gentoo to the list, it doesn't stay there and the computer is really slow. I have backed up my home folder to another partition. Do you think I will be able to repair it at all or should I just reinstall?

Win7 Pro installed first with sda1=system reserved partition, sda2=C: drive, sda5=separate software application programs to differentiate from Windows' Program Files. Ubuntu 9.10 was installed next (sda6=common swap partition for all Linux distros, sda7=Ubuntu root, sda8=Ubuntu home). Then Opensuse 11.2 was installed with sda12=root and sda13=home. Finally FedoraCore11 was installed with sda9=boot, sda10=root and sda11=home. Ubuntu and Suse have grub loader in their own root partitions.
Suse's grub menu controls all OS's. From this grub menu I can select Windows or any other Linuxes. Suse uses legacy grub because it was installed right after Ubuntu 9.10 which uses (legacy) grub.

Somehow I also messed up Windows' boot file and boot partition table. Now I am still trying to use Windows installation CD to repair Windows but it has taken several hours and am still waiting for screen response. I cannot boot into any Linux distro either.
My computer started acting flaky this afternoon and by the end of the day, became completely inoperable. When I reboot and login, I'm given only a Terminal window. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS, although the Lynx is not very Lucid at the moment!
1). First sign of trouble was yesterday when I was running Win XP as the guest on Virtualbox. XP became unresponsive - at least the mouse could not push any buttons. I had to do a cold shutdown by right-clicking the "close" button at the tab on the bottom Gnome panel. This problem repeated itself today.
2). I attempted (and I thought, succeeded) in upgrading OpenOffice.org to version 3.3. OO seemed to work fine, but after this install I started seeing problems.
3). I attempted to remove Pulse Audio via Synaptic, but instead of removing only Pulse, pieces of software started flying out of the machine (so to speak) at an alarming rate. It happened too fast to count them all. I think the entire desktop is gone along with many individual programs (such as Kaffeine, being one that I noticed).
Currently, I'm running a backup copy of Ubuntu that I keep on a separate hard drive on the same machine. I can access my files from here, and yes, I've backed up my home folder from the other disk!
When I reboot to the damaged system and I get the terminal window, how should I repair the damage? How do I find out if the damage resulted from broken or missing software, or both? Should I try to load Synaptic from the terminal, and if so, how is that done?
I was follooing this instructions to repair windows system32 in this tutorial found in a previus tread, my laptop is Dell xps 2010 I had Ubuntu Live cd running with Internet,mouse and keyboard, The NTFS and NTFSProgs exist in System/ administration /synatip Package Manager,but i can mount the filesystem properly due the device name etc,thing i missing some code in terminal application.Partition table entries are not in disk order.Regard the repair of windows media center edition (windows system32 corrupted...).

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhile using my computer the other day (I was sending an email) it suddenly turned off. I didn't get any low power warning, but I was running on battery and had my iphone charging from a USB port.
As I didn't think there was low battery, I just turned it back on again. As it was booting I saw the battery light flashing, indicating low power. I went to get the charger, but before I got it, mid boot-up it turned off again.
This seemingly damaged something hard-disk-wise.
Upon turning it on again it dropped into busy box with some message similar to this:

I have booted a live USB (what I am using now). I thought since it wasn't cleanly unmounted, simply mounting and unmounting would do the trick. I was wrong.

I had previously ran e2fsck (after checking it was unmounted) but it wouldn't run also because it was reporting that the device was already mounted, busy, or being exclusively used by a process.
I don't want to do any more for fear of causing further damage.
I am astounded that such damage can be caused so easily!
Here are my specs to start off...

So I corrupted my Windows OS by doing something stupid so I decided to install Unbuntu. I tried installing it over my windows OS, but as it's scanning the disk it fails and says "Apt configuration failure" and then "installation failure". I can't upload my partitions because I can't run my OS to find them.
I know the information is limited I've considered trying to install a different linux OS or even format my entire harddrive (I would really prefer NOT to do that since I'd have to install all the drivers off the internet).
My system got stuffed after a trivial online update, it downloaded a new kernel update, I rebooted and now it won't boot at all saying "FATAL: Could not load /lib/modules/2.6.31.8-0.1-desktop/modules.dep: No such file or directory", then some stuff, then "mount: unknown filesystem type 'ext4'", "could not mount root filesystem"... It's on my laptop without a DVD drive and I've only got a LiveCD USB stick which doesn't have a YAST system repair tool. Is there any way to repair a system without a DVD drive?

The system boots to the point in the GUI where it checks the file system. It then suggests that I run fsck without the - a and -p options, and the drops to a sheel.
I enter the root pwd and then it says: "(Repair fileystem ) 1#" What do I do from there?
I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. Recently, one the SMART utility said that one of the drives had failed and another drive was about to fail. I downed the box and hooked them up to my windows machine to run sea tools on them (They are all seagate drives). Sea Tools said that the drives were fine, while ubuntu said they were failing/dead. Yesterday I decided to try to fix one of the drives in the raid. I turned the server off, took the failed drive out, and restarted. Of course the raid didn't work because only 2 of the 3 drives were there, however it had been working w/ only 2 of the 3 drives for a couple months now (I'm a lazy college student). I turned it back off and back on with the drive there just to see if I could get the raid up again, but I havn't been able to get it to go. So far I've tried:

I'm looking for a way to trick the raid into working with just 2 drives until I can warranty the seagate and buy an external 1.5 TB drive to use as another backup. how to remove the bad drive from the array and replace it with a fresh drive, without data loss.
I have 2 USB drives. I have had 9.04 running on one for some time. I used Disk Creator in 9.04 to 'create' the drive. I use it as a reference to verify how things went in 9.04 if I hit a problem with 9.10.
However, after some months, when I tried this USB drive it produced this 'Boot Failure'. I followed up by checking the other USB drive which had Lubuntu installed via USB Disk Creator and it produced the same result ie 'Boot Failure'.
The Machine bios is set in the correct order.
I have tried to 're-do' things via 'Disk Creator' in 9.10 and 9.04 with the same result. It is not likely that both USB drives have failed at the same time.
Is Grub2 at fault in some way?
I have a fileserver which is running Ubuntu Server 6.10. I had a RAID5 array consisting of the following disks:

the raid drive for the above three disks. The sda1 disk has failed and the array is running on 2 of 3 disks
/dev/sdc (OS disk)
/dev/sde (new 2tb disk - unused)
/dev/sdf (new 2tb disk - unused)
My plan was to rebuild the array using the two new disks as RAID1. Would the best way to do this be to create a new RAID1 disk on /dev/md1 then copy all data over from /dev/md0? Also - this may sound stupid but since all 3 drives in md0 are identical i'm not sure physically which disk is bad. I tried disconnecting each disk one-by-one then rebooting but the system doesn't appear to want to boot without the bad drive connected. I've already failed the disk in the array with mdadm but i'm unsure of how to remove it properly.
I went to setup my linux box and found that the OS drive had finally died. It was an extremely old WD raptor drive in a hot box full of drives so it was really only a matter of time before it just quit on me. Normally this wouldn't be such a big deal however I had just recently constructed an md RAID5 array of 3 1TB disks to act as an NFS mount for basically all of my important files. Maybe 2-3 weeks before the failure I had finished moving all of my most important stuff onto that array. Now I know that the array is intact. All the required data is sitting on those disks. Since only the OS level disk failed on me I should be able to get a new disk in there, reinstall ubuntu and then rebuild that array. how exactly do I go about doing that with mdadm? Do I create the array from the /dev character devices like when I initially built the array?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to use the live cd (Linux mint 9) to do a repair install on my system, but when I start, it says that it has detected another instance of linux and this must be removed before I can continue. I don't want to do this as I have a lot of data on this system and I don't want to lose it. The error occurred when I did a dist-upgrade and installed new kernels. Before I installed the kernels, a message came up saying the following packages are already installed but are no longer required. Use apt-get autoremove to remove them. I did this and now when I boot, I get as far as the five changing dots on the screen and it just stays there. I went into command line and ran apt-get mint-meta-main mint-meta-gnome, and at the end it came up with problem with /etc/utilities/desktop.

View 2 Replies View RelatedKeyboard and mouse failure when trying to run a live Ubuntu disk on an Acer Aspire M1641 desktop. I was trying to show off the Ubuntu system to a colleague when to my surprise as it booted up both keyboard and mouse died. There was no response at all, the only option was to use the power button, rebooting into Vista all back to normal. I tried several other versions of Ubuntu going back 8.04 even Knoppix failed to get the keyboard and mouse working. Even after re installing the windows drivers and several more attempts even changing keyboard and mouse, I could not get any linux live disk to work.
