I use ln -s to create a symbolic folder in /home/ to direct a folder in the media.
But it appeared the link is broken. It also said "This link cannot be used, because its target "./media/StudyResearch/" doesn't exist."
When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have to access to a remote hard drive on a windows machine with admin privileges (something like \ipaddressc$). I was able to bookmark that and put the link on "Places" using "Connect to Server..." using the following parameters: windows share, ip address, d$, username & pass. Now to make it easier to access, i want to put the same thing on the panel, and there comes the problem. I think that i can make a link that executes by command line the previous settings and opens-mount all the times my remote path.

I am running Ubuntu Server, I am up for either apache config or symbolic link based answer :) Plus nonserved folder is rather dynamic thus manual symbolic linking to each folder is impossible.
I can't seem to access my ROOT folder when I link to a file in it from one in var/ w ww.if (my ip):80 links to va r / w ww, and jsp only works in tomcat / webapps /ROOT, and I have tomcat / webapps / ROOT installed in var / w ww, then I thought I would try to do something like this, to make jsp work.Is there a way to simply redirect webapps / ROOT to var / www and put all of the files there?

I have access for both users. I want to link a folder from usr1 into the home directory of usr2. That is, if usr1 has the following folder

I want usr2 to link to this folder in this manner

I want usr2 to have read and execute permissions over all files and folders under that link, but probably I don't want him to have write permissions.
I seem to be seeing some weird behavior in kubuntu with KDE 4.3.2 and KDE 4.3.5 for Kubuntu 9.10 32-bit.I have a few programs in my home folder. For instance Eclipse and Mendeley. it seems that when i create a Link to Application does not launch them. Here is how I create the links.
-> I right click and create a new "Link to Application"
-> I click on the Application tab and browse to where the shell script, or executable is.
and when I try to launch them it does not work. The link is using the absolute path. I tried setting the working directory and using a relative path but nothing. If I run the link in a terminal it says "Warning: Could not find" and the application I set. Now this seems to not be a problem for system applications like Kate. If i change the link to launch Kate it works perfectly.

View 9 Replies View RelatedIve been noticing lately that in my media folder, where I am able to see all the drives I have connected, it seems that each one is duplicated. For example, if I have a drive called "WD" theres another called "WD_", or "Lacie" and "Lacie_". And when I click on the ones with the "_", it says I don't not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'lacie'. But when I click the ones without the underscore, I get in. But heres the funny part, when using jdownloader, and i choose the folder where to save the files, I have to select the drive that has the underscore in it. Heres some pics and if you look at my info screenlet to the left, you will see that it shows the drives with the undercore.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a question about the ln command for link creation. I have both Windows and Linux partitions on my system. While I'm working on linux, sometimes I need to access the data stored on my windows partition. Yet, the access is provided through /media directory and I often, I have to click on several folders in order to access windows "My Documents" folder. So, in order to avoid this, I decided to create a link to "My Documents" folder directly from my $HOME directory.
Code:
$ mkdir /home/dariyoosh/MyDocuments
$ ln -fs /media/disk/Users/dariyoosh/Documents/MyDocuments/* ./MyDocuments
The link was created without any problem and now I have a direct access to that folder just by a click. Yet, there is a problem. If I update any file of the windows MyDocuments folder within this linking directory, the file is actually updated on the windows partition, which is of course what I want to do. But If I decide to create a new file on the windows "MyDocuments" folder by using this linking folder, that is, /home/dariyoosh/MyDocuments, the file is put actually on the linux partition instead of the windows MyDocuments folder. So, having created a directory linking to another directory, is there any way to proceed so that any file operation, in particular, creation, affects directly the linked directory?

I currently have an ASUS eebox which is running XBMC Live which includes a stripped down version of Ubuntu. The computer will be used by various people within a teaching environment and I have successfully installed launchers for Openoffice which can be opened within XBMC.
I am trying to the make the experience for the end user as simple as possible as the vast majority will have never used Linux before. I want to get to a point where they can open Openoffice, plug in their USB stick and navigate quickly to their files. At the moment when the program is launched and I try and navigate for a file it automatically starts in the Home Folder of xbmc. So I have navigate up a couple of times, then find the /media directory where the USB stick has been mounted and so on. What I was hoping to do is create a shortcut within the Home Directory which takes you straight to the Media folder where usb is mounted.
I have already attempted and created a folder within the Home directory and called it usbpen.
I have then added the following line into fstab /media /home/xbmc/usbpen none bind 0 0
Now when I reboot the machine and navigate to the home/xbmc/usbpen folder I can see the Drive name of the USB device mounted in /media but I cannot navigate through any of the files, I am greeted with a read error message. So the shortcut is only allowing me to see the device name only.
be aware that due to running XBMC Live I do not have a Windows manager installed and therefore everything must be done through the terminal.
I close Nautilus and it pops open again and always to the folder "media". The only thing I had in the media was a CDROM, which I unmounted and that made no difference. I then removed the CD from the CDROM drive and that made no difference. Any ideas why opensuse 11.2 would insist on keeping a Nautilus window open all the time -- defaulting the "/media" folder on initial opening?

I have my music organized by Artist/Year-Album/Track.Title.mp3 I want to be able to "cd /_" then "ls" and see all Artist folders.

I'd like my WinXP "My Documents" folder to appear as a linked folder in my Linux Home directory.
I think I should be able to use the ln command, but I can't figure it out.
I've tried to create a link that will appear like a "folder" called WinDocs in my Home directory with this command, run from my Home folder:
ln -t /dev/sda1/Documents and Settings/richard/My Documents/ /WinDocs/
but it reports
ln: accessing `/dev/sda1/Documents and Settings/richard/My Documents/': Not a directory
I get the same results if I try /dev/hda1 etc.
I can see the contents of the folder currently in my Places listing. Its shortcut is active on my desktop.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 x64. Suddenly I found that if I click on "Home folder" in the "Places" (top menu) then this folder is being opened in deadbeaf instead of nautilus. I wonder why. How to fix that?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf

The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.

The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.

I have tried using symlinks, but they become dead when I move the directory they point to. I have tried hard links, but I haven't found any Linux file system that would support hard linked directories. How can I achieve that a complex structure of directories (currently with symlinks for directories and hard links for files) keep symlinks live when directories are moved?

Here is were the stupid part takes over... I right clicked on the desktop icon for the device and selected Properties. From there I selected the Volume tab and in there I changed the mounting point to '/media/Movies' It accepted it and said the changed would take place when I unmounted it and remounted it. However, when I did this it now says it cannot be mounted as it says mount_point contains invalid characters usually /
Unfortunately, now I cannot get back into the properties to remove my error.
