I close Nautilus and it pops open again and always to the folder "media". The only thing I had in the media was a CDROM, which I unmounted and that made no difference. I then removed the CD from the CDROM drive and that made no difference. Any ideas why opensuse 11.2 would insist on keeping a Nautilus window open all the time -- defaulting the "/media" folder on initial opening?

The problem is that when media centre is on and i attach the hard drive, Ubuntu's file browser pops up with the contents of my drive and this is over XBMC. When using a remote i am left stuck as i can't alt+tab out of the file browser. How do i disable this?

If I open a folder at the bottom of the page, the subfolders open below and I have to use the scroll bar to move down the page to see what's under the top folder. I would like to have it put the opened folder at the top of the page so I can see as many subfolders and files as possible without having to scroll. Something like the file roller when you are looking for a place to extract files. It does exactly what I'm looking for. Are there any settings I can change in Nautilus that would provide this function?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm evaluating OpenSUSE and have installed 11.3 with Gnome (from the latest liveCD) and have it all running fine in a VM at the moment. We are looking at using it for an iSCSI/NFS/Samba server and have it allrunning and it is all configurable from Yast. However I can't seem to get Nautilus to play ball and allow sharing of Samba/NFS shares under folder properties (I'm fairly positive I've done this fine in Ubuntu). All I ever get is Usershare/Gnome sharing (which I believe is Webdav).
I must say I am so impressed with OpenSUSE, the partition manager is just a dream to use and everything works really well it would just be really nice to be able to share NFS/Samaba shares from the file manager. There doesn't seem to be any other file managers in the repositories so I'm a bit stuck now.
I recently preformed a full update to my openSuSe 11.3 x64 + gnome install. Everything was running fine before the update however post a number of features have stopped working or have changed. I used the command zypper up to update everything. The errors I've been recieving are as follows, Wastebasket
Won't open on via Desktop or Places menu. Gives the following error "Could not display "trash:" File Is Of An Unknown Type". If I drop things on the Wastebasket the files do go to /home/USERNAME/.local/share/Trash/files but I can't Empty Wastebasket upon right click as the option is highlighted out.
Computer Icon If I try to open it from link in Places menu I get the error Nautilus cannot handle "computer" locations.. The link to it has also disappeared from the left hand panel if I have a Nautilus window open.
Mounted Icons Previously I used to have 4 drives mounted;
1 network (NFS),
1 encrypted (TrueMount),
2 Windows (partitions of main machine)
Out of these only the encrypted and network drive showed on the Desktop and two Windows drives would stay mounted under /windows but have no icon on the Desktop. After the update, all these drives are on the desktop and but the only way to not have them appear on Desktop is to set Gnome config not to show any of the icons on Desktop. Although these are independent errors, they are all related to folders (at least indirectly) so I felt it was better to group them together to give a better picture of the issue.
When I get my partitions listed in the terminal or in GParted they go up sequentially to sda7 as they should. The media folder in my file system shows the other dual boot OS and a data disk partition, both mounted, which is correct. All good. But there is a third strange folder titled sda8 however I have no such partition. /etc/fstab shows no sda8 either. When I open /media/sda8, it shows no files, says its empty and lists an empty available space that equals the empty space on the Linux OS partition in which the folder sits. But no pie chart shown, and it belongs to root. I changed the permission and found I can save files to it.

I did not find this behaviour useful, yet. (There already is the pop-up window that is displayed when media is inserted or connected which asks what application to open.)In a specific case, where I connect my cellphone to the computer there are two notices:"The media contains digital photos [Open F-Spot Photo Manager]" and"These files are on a digital audio player [Open Banshee Media Player]"It is little useful. One is okay, but two notices take up too much screen space for displaying files.

But it appeared the link is broken. It also said "This link cannot be used, because its target "./media/StudyResearch/" doesn't exist."
In re of Fedora 13. I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to create a new folder with nautilus. Yes - I know about doing a right click in the background of the window to use the pop up menu to create a folder. BUT - ALAS - When the folder is full of files, there is no blank background space to click in so I cannot get the pop up menu to appear. Hence, I cannot create a new folder. Seems to me that the constant tinkering with Nautilus is leaving essential features missing or totally not-obvious to locate. Argh!!! Since the main menus are also missing (as compared to prior Fedora releases), I seem to be left with little choice other than to open a terminal window and do a mkdir command.

I've just discovered something I've not noticed before in earlier releases. I have samba installed but like to go the easy way when setting up smb shares by right-clicking on a folder and selecting 'Sharing Options' (That, by the way, sets up the configuration for the share in /var/lib/samba/usershares rather than in /etc/samba/smb.conf.)
Trying to get my Mac to be able to access the share, I was trying different modifications to the share with right-click > Sharing Options > Modify Share. Each time I did so, this caused Nautilus to restart - that is, the whole desktop blanked out to just the wallpaper and then my icons slowly reappeared. Worse, a file copy was interrupted. And much worse, a lengthy video encoding using OpenShot was interrupted. Both the latter irretrievably.This is unfortunate behaviour. Has anyone else seen it? Can anyone else confirm this? I couldn't find anything on Launchpad.
Ive been noticing lately that in my media folder, where I am able to see all the drives I have connected, it seems that each one is duplicated. For example, if I have a drive called "WD" theres another called "WD_", or "Lacie" and "Lacie_". And when I click on the ones with the "_", it says I don't not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of 'lacie'. But when I click the ones without the underscore, I get in. But heres the funny part, when using jdownloader, and i choose the folder where to save the files, I have to select the drive that has the underscore in it. Heres some pics and if you look at my info screenlet to the left, you will see that it shows the drives with the undercore.

It happens when I run nautilus as root too.Typing "ls -la" in the home folder will cause the term to freeze. Neither "ls -a" or "ls -l" by themselves cause it to freeze The freezing only happens in ~ to my knowledge.The freezing terminal also ONLY happens in xterm, inside gnome. Through ssh I can display the folder contents just fine, and I don't see any strange file names that might be causing an issue.I tried following advice I found, I believe on this site, to "rm -rf ~/.gvfs"I feel that I may e overwritten a fedora-specific library somewhere when trying to compile different things. I don't recall this being an issue immediately after upgrading from fc10 to fc12, though it could have conceivably gone unnoticed.

You do not have permission to create a usershare. Ask your administrator to grant you permissions to create a share.Or something to that effect. When Nautilus opened, the screen showed a generic root folder and the only icon was Desktop. Some research led me to install Samba, which reduced the error message.
I used to be able to open any folder in Nautilus and from there navigate to the parent folder. There was this arrow pointing up that had this function but I don't have the option any more.
View 9 Replies View RelatedEvery time I try to access the .wine folder Nautilus freezes. It may have nothing to do with wine and just be something about that folder or it's contents but here's what I have figure out so far:
-it freezes when double clicking the folder in Nautilus, right clicking, selecting folder next to it then arrow over to select
-does same thing when accessed as root
-everything worked fine when booting from a live CD
-restarting Nautilus or rebooting has no affect
-when it freezes, I can not scroll, select another folder, or do anything else in Nautilus, but it does respond to clicking the close window button by displaying the force quit dialog.
I am helping a friend with his ubuntu PC, and I reinstalled to go from 8.04 to 10.10. In the process I had reconfigured his home directory to be a separate partition, it all worked ok. Although I did have to do the new install as a new username etc as I think is usual in such cases. I am not *convinced* I sorted all ownerships and permissions out. after the new install, I did change ownership of /home/oldusername contents using chown, which seemed to work ok. I do note that for the old username in the original 8.04 installation the uid was 1000, but the same username in the new installation is 1001
the problem is that nautilus does not start from Places > Home folder all that is seen is a waiting circle, which soon stops. But nautilus *does* start from a user terminal with just nautilus
I think something is wrong with Nautilus... I have Ubuntu 10.10, and everytime I click on Places on the top bar, and then one of my home folders it opens up a terminal, for every folder. The only way I can access my home folders and such is to open a terminal and type nautilus, I have tried everything, what is going on??

It does not appear in nautilus but when I look for it from command line it appears to be there. I simply do 'ls' for this and that means its not hidden.Googled it for an hour to find a suitable answer but most of the posts focus on removing the in front of file name which is not the case here.

HiI still have a issue where nautilus occasionally wont show my home folder's contents.
(it has no images or videos or music in the home folder directly (only in sub-folders), only other folders and text files, incl dot files for settings)
I have to reboot to get it to work.
Sometimes it does it right after a reboot, a 2nd reboot then allows nautilus to see contents of the home folder.
