Ubuntu :: How To Get Back Without Reinstalling It?
Feb 26, 2010
I installed Ubuntu 9.10 inside windows to a USB hard drive. Later Windows had a fatal error and I had to reinstall it, and lost the MBR. I've tried several "fixes" that were supposed to work and none of them worked. I don't want to lose the Data that was on Ubuntu since I've already had to lose everything that was on Windows.

Except for the obvious home folder, how can I save at least some of my settings, like the background picture, the icons, my customizations to the menu?
Also, If ubuntu on the USB is not working perfectly (software center crashes most of the time without any reason) it shouldn't impact the resulting install on my hard drive, right?
What do you back up usually except the Home folder?
And a last thing: What is, in ubuntu, the closest thing to syncing in Google Chrome? What else would you recommend to do before deleting everything and making a new ubuntu on your pc?

I have an HP DV9005US laptop and its been running fine with Ubuntu for a few years now. The other day the wireless stopped working and now when I do an lspci I see no wireless listed. I know its using the broadcom 43xx but now I am not sure what else I can do. I tried going back in and reinstalling all the broadcom stuff from the package manager. Still nothing works. Amber light on the front of the laptop and I am dead in the water unless I plug into the wired network. Please advise if there is anything else I can do.

I managed to delete the Volume Applet that appears by default on the task bar. I'm sure it used to be listed in 'Add to Panel' in other version of Ubuntu however I can't see it there in 10.04.
Can someone explain to me how I get it back?

I thought I installed properly, but once again I've made a mistake. I'm trying to make use of the 114 gb I didn't assign as file system space, but I can't seem to access it or write to it. I've officially run out of space in my file system and I've got a lot to do still. Any thoughts on how to make the unused partition accessable?

I had 9.04, then upgraded to 9.10. After screwing it up, it won't boot. Is it possible to just reinstall Ubuntu using the CD? Cause then I would get GRUB 2. I installed kde-desktop, then it failed to boot (I selected KDM) and that somehow screwed it up.

I was on line and viewed a Picassa slide show. I went to F11 for the full screen and after I closed Picassa,my Firefox browser had been reset, creating all kinds of issues, taking out my status bar, making it impossible to access the three icons in the top right hand corner of the screen, and so forth.
When I removed and reinstalled Firefox from the Synaptic Package Manager,it did not give me the option of not saving the settings and the same issues pertained to the newly installed one.
Does anybody know the shell code to remove and reinstall the Firefox Browser unsullied, pristine, not saving the existing settings?(realizing I'll lose the bookmarks and have to set it up anew?)

I had Ubuntu 10.10 installed on an HP G72 laptop, and I wish to reinstall Win 7. I loaded from the recovery disks that I made before installing Ubuntu and all went fine. At the end, I need to restart. When restarting, I am getting the GRUB rescue prompt with "unknown filesystem." It surprises me that GRUB is still there. How can I get rid of it so I can boot windows?

Currently running Ubuntu 10.10 off of hard drive. I want to install a second hard drive and install Vista onto that drive from backup discs. I know how to install the drives: what I need to know is what order (if any) to install second drive (master or slave) and then, after installing Vista on the new drive, to get GRUB to recognize it.

I mistakenly deleted /etc/apache2/port.conf, so I tried to reinstall the package with "apt-get", but nothing. I dug myself in deeper by thinking a script skipped it because the directory was there, so I removed it completely. After reinstalling using "apt-get install apache2", the folders came back, bot non of the config files where there. I am now lost. How can I get them all back?

this time last week I was happily running 10.10. I decided to upgrade to 11.04 via Update Manager (not a fresh install), and of course I didn't like Unity so gave Gnome3 a shot.
Well.. at this point the system would stall whilst booting.. so I downloaded the 11.04 disc and reinstalled it (I desperately need to keep my data and don't have any backup options at the moment).
But, now when I boot into Ubuntu (using an Acer Aspire 5741), the resolution is about 800x600, and the mouse doesn't work. Has anyone got any ideas how I can force Ubuntu to reconfigure the system as if it was a completely new install?

i have noticed that if vista is not the active partition, hybernate does not work. it just goes black and then back to the user icon screen to log back in. another "slight" problem was that i was not able to apply a service pack. after restoring vistas dominance i was able to install the pack. is there any other work arounds for hybernate? even though you might not be interested in cleaning up after microsoft.

I have a laptop running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and I need to upgrade to the new Ubuntu, I order to get complete use of my hardware. Usually when I install a new version of Ubuntu, I have the opportunity to use my old partitioning, but now I can only use the entire disk or create a new partition table.
The laptop has other partitions that is a data and a Windows partition as I want to preserve.
How can I install the new Ubuntu on the old Ubuntu partition and preserve the data on other partitions?

I have a /home partition at /dev/sda3 and I am currently in Gparted. I wanted to know if I am supposed to re-identify it somehow when I re-install ubuntu on /dev/sda2.
It seems to me that it would try and create a new home directory on /dev/sda2 unless I tell it otherwise. Is this correct? I just want to make sure I don't do two things...
1. End up with 2 home directories
2. Delete my existing home directory at /dev/sda3 (with my files)

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and as usual it destroyed my grub setup. I have done this before, so I simply booted from a live CD and typed this in the terminal:
Code:
sudo grub
> root (hd0,2)
> setup(hd0)
> quit
Now, the problem with it this time is that in the past in these situations I had only Ubuntu Feisty and Windows XP installed on my machine. But I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a separate partition (retaining the old 7.04 installation separately) since I last had to reinstall XP. Doing the above procedure restores my grub sttings to my pre-9.04 installation (i.e. I only get Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP in the grub menu).

I've installed Remastersys on my Dell Mini and created a custombackup.iso which which runs Ubuntu 10.04 perfectly from both CD and usb flashdrive.
However, since backing up my complete HDD a problem has arisen with my wireless connection and I now want to reinstall the cloned copy of my OS onto my HDD.
The question is: how? Whether I use Ubuntu's disk creator, unetbootin or penlinuxdrive, booting from the flashdrive does not offer me an 'install' option.

I've been having a problem with my main user account ever since I installed Lucid where after I enter my login credentials, the desktop always freezes. Since I've been having this problem, I created another user and have been able to login fine with this one. I have determined that the problem is with compiz, so I want to completely reinstall compiz, including any configuration settings. However, there seem to be a number of packages that go with compiz so I'm not sure what steps I can follow to accomplish this.
