Ubuntu :: Deleting And Reinstalling Firefox?

Oct 22, 2010

I was on line and viewed a Picassa slide show. I went to F11 for the full screen and after I closed Picassa,my Firefox browser had been reset, creating all kinds of issues, taking out my status bar, making it impossible to access the three icons in the top right hand corner of the screen, and so forth.

When I removed and reinstalled Firefox from the Synaptic Package Manager,it did not give me the option of not saving the settings and the same issues pertained to the newly installed one.

Does anybody know the shell code to remove and reinstall the Firefox Browser unsullied, pristine, not saving the existing settings?(realizing I'll lose the bookmarks and have to set it up anew?)

Ubuntu :: How To Get Back Without Reinstalling It?

Feb 26, 2010

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 inside windows to a USB hard drive. Later Windows had a fatal error and I had to reinstall it, and lost the MBR. I've tried several "fixes" that were supposed to work and none of them worked. I don't want to lose the Data that was on Ubuntu since I've already had to lose everything that was on Windows.

Ubuntu :: Reinstalling From USB - What Should Back Up?

Apr 6, 2011

Except for the obvious home folder, how can I save at least some of my settings, like the background picture, the icons, my customizations to the menu?

Also, If ubuntu on the USB is not working perfectly (software center crashes most of the time without any reason) it shouldn't impact the resulting install on my hard drive, right?

What do you back up usually except the Home folder?

And a last thing: What is, in ubuntu, the closest thing to syncing in Google Chrome? What else would you recommend to do before deleting everything and making a new ubuntu on your pc?

I've officially run out of space in my file system and I've got a lot to do still. Any thoughts on how to make the unused partition accessable?

Ubuntu :: Reinstalling 11.04 Leaves Me With Unusable X?

Aug 1, 2011

this time last week I was happily running 10.10. I decided to upgrade to 11.04 via Update Manager (not a fresh install), and of course I didn't like Unity so gave Gnome3 a shot.

Well.. at this point the system would stall whilst booting.. so I downloaded the 11.04 disc and reinstalled it (I desperately need to keep my data and don't have any backup options at the moment).

But, now when I boot into Ubuntu (using an Acer Aspire 5741), the resolution is about 800x600, and the mouse doesn't work. Has anyone got any ideas how I can force Ubuntu to reconfigure the system as if it was a completely new install?

Ubuntu :: Reinstalling But Keeping /home Partition?

I have a /home partition at /dev/sda3 and I am currently in Gparted. I wanted to know if I am supposed to re-identify it somehow when I re-install ubuntu on /dev/sda2.

It seems to me that it would try and create a new home directory on /dev/sda2 unless I tell it otherwise. Is this correct? I just want to make sure I don't do two things...

1. End up with 2 home directories

2. Delete my existing home directory at /dev/sda3 (with my files)

Ubuntu Installation :: Getting Grub Set Up Again After Reinstalling Windows XP?

Apr 18, 2010

I recently had to reinstall Windows XP and as usual it destroyed my grub setup. I have done this before, so I simply booted from a live CD and typed this in the terminal:

Code:
sudo grub
> root (hd0,2)
> setup(hd0)
> quit

Now, the problem with it this time is that in the past in these situations I had only Ubuntu Feisty and Windows XP installed on my machine. But I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on a separate partition (retaining the old 7.04 installation separately) since I last had to reinstall XP. Doing the above procedure restores my grub sttings to my pre-9.04 installation (i.e. I only get Ubuntu 7.04 and Windows XP in the grub menu).

Ubuntu Installation :: Uninstalling And Then Reinstalling Samba

Feb 18, 2011

I'm having an issue with samba and trying to reinstall it. I uninstalled samba with this command
}sudo apt-get remove samba
or
sudo apt-get purge samba

After either one of these steps, i noticed that the /etc/samba/ directory still existed, which was odd since I thought i uinstalled samba. So, I proceeded to remove all of the fiels within the /etc/samba/ directory and removed the samba directory as well. After this, I tried to reinstall samba with this command:
sudo apt-get install samba

After this installation step, the /etc/samba directory does not exist and neither does the smb.conf file and other files within he /etc/samba directory exist after installation. When I type :
testparm -s

I get the following message:
Load smb config files from /etc/samba/smb.conf
rlimit_max: rlimit_max (1024) below minimum Windows limit (16384)
params.c:OpenConfFile() - Unable to open configuration file "/etc/samba/smb.conf":

I'm trying to get my samba up and running again.

Ubuntu :: Reinstalling While Grub 2.0 Is Installed Into Same Partition?

Feb 21, 2011

I have triple boot machine Windows 7 + Ubuntu + Mac OS X in a single HDD.

Windows 7 -- /dev/sda1
Ubuntu 10.10 -- /dev/sda2 (In same Partition grub 2.0)
Mac Snow Leopard -- /dev/sda3

I have installed GRUB 2.0 in same partition where current ubuntu is installed ie /dev/sda2 and basically Windwos Boot manager is installed within MBR.. & I have added GRUB 2.0 and Mac OSX entry into windows boot manger with some freeware from windows 7. So practically when I start my computer First Windows Boot manager comes up and asks me which OS to start first. I set up this type of installation with the thought that when grub 2.0 is not installed within MBR, I can format the whole /dev/sda2 partition without any difficulty and reinstalled any future release distro of ubuntu. So is it practically possible? If I format /dev/sda2 and reinstall new ubuntu release there.. Old grub won't affect the installation of new one.
