Ubuntu :: How To Cut And Paste To Root-protected Folder
Nov 25, 2010
I have some great background wallpapers i have downloaded to my home folder, now i want to place these images in Usr/Share/Background. How do i do that i just cannot cut and paste it there?Do i have to open up a terminal and login as root? I did that but still not working, or do i have to do all this by terminal-commands?
I am trying to copy a (custom XML) file to a protected folder (namely /usr/share/games/FlightGear/Protocol) for data Input/Output.I tried copying and pasting the folders and it doesn't work. I realized that it is because only root user has the permission to do modification. So, I tried using "sudo cp" to copy the file. The file was copied, but the content now becomes unreadable when I tried to open the file
Sorry to sound like a newbie dope but I somehow extracted a folder to the desktop and can't delete it because it says I don't have permission to read it. How can I delete this folder?
I have this project for my operating systems class and I have put together the basic flow chart to aid me in writing the program. I know how to use pipes as a buffer to hold info. I know how to create a binary semaphore. But what I dont know is this:
How to "use a delay adjustment parameter K in the critical section to adjust the speed of the display process to show that without semaphore protection the displayed contents of the buffer are randomly interleaved."
First off, I am definitely not asking anyone to give me the solution. But I do need some guidance. So I figure there will be an if statement with two options:
1. If true, use semaphore protection to enter/exit critical section
2. If false, no semaphore protection -- this is where the contents of the buffer should be interleaved.
Now does that mean that as each child process enters the non-protected critical section, it should "sleep" for a randomized time? I mean, will this allow my output to be interleaved?
So lets say my command line looks like this:
what happens to the 100? Is it randomized using rand and srand and passed as a parameter to sleep() inside the critcal section?
I am using Fedora 14, I need to change the directory of a folder(myweb) from "homeuserdesktop" to "varwwwhtml" . Please give the Fedora commands to do this.
We have 10.x ubuntu server with XP clients. We have samba share folders at LAN. Is there any possibility that we can disable copy and paste option for some specific folders, while other data folders remain as usual in our shared data?
Fresh install of openSUSE 11.3 here and I am used to launching Konqueror as root from the CLI and having a cut and paste editor to use. This doesn't work in KDE 4.4. I can't launch kwrite from the cli as root. What am I supposed to use? I installed midnight commander but it can't cut and paste correctly. I am feeling a bit frustrated with KDE 4.4.
I just maked an ext4 partition by the help of gparted. Ubuntu is my only OS no dual boot. Using Ubuntu Maverick. The problem is partition must be open as root to do any work else it wont even allow me to open file, create folder, cut copy paste or anything.
I just dual booted Open SUSE on my computer, and am pretty happy with it. But, in order to use my wireless card for it, I need to install a driver. The wireless card is a Realtek 8191 SE. I've downloaded a driver, but I have no idea how to configure it. I've tried pasting the files into /lib/firmware, but it won't allow me to edit or paste any files into the folder.
I am running Ubuntu Linux 10.04.1 on an AMD 64-bit system. The server is primarily used for Windows file sharing via Samba in a small local network. I use webmin and putty to administer the system. I have two 1.4 TB drives for storage and one 500 GB drive with 18 GB mounted for root.I performed a large cut & paste operation (25.8 GB of files) using the File Manager in Webmin to move a certain folder into another folder within /media/Work. The operation failed and I am now getting a "root filesystem full" error, and am stumped.
can i just copy/backup postfix mail queues in /var/spool/postfix and paste that folder back in after i done migrating all users and mails to a new mailserver?
I used TESTDISK to retrieve pictures from my 16 gb stick. Copied all folders from the retrieved files to a new folder for burning later. Went back to delete rescued pictures in folders and there is a LOCK on ALL pics and document...Can not delete them...WHY...???
.Trash folder in the /root directory. If I'm using gksudo nautilus, where can i access this cause It may have trash I can delete. (Trying to free up space , and I already used wacktomack's guide)
I backed up my information from 10.4 to an external hard drive before I switched to pinguy using sbackup. Once I installed pinguy, I made sure to download sbackup and hit restore. So far, all fine and dandy, except when it restored my information, it extracted all the information to a new folder in /home, which is root-restricted, so I can't even access it normally. I got annoyed, and just manually extracted the music and documents (which were the only things I really cared about anyway), and now I'd like to delete the 15 or so gigabytes just sitting on my computer, taking up space. The folder being root, I couldn't just drag it to the wastebasket. so I started terminal, entered root, typed rm /home/tmpuWiQlI (the folder in question), only to be told it's a directory and can't delete it! What gives?
I copied a folder from /media/memory_stick into a folder /opt/openerp/server/bin/addons. Trying to open the copied folder I discovered that it is impossible because it is owned by root.I should like to delete the copied folder. To avoid this ownership I copied the folder in /home/cristian/Downloads and I will copy it with:sudo cp -R folder_name /opt/openerp/server/bin/addonsMaybe in this way the folder will be not more owned by root.I tried already but because in the destination folder already exist one owned by root nothing is happening.
I have a folder owned by root, I can open it by changing the permissions but then I have to change them back when I'm done, I was wondering if there was a way to use the terminal to open the folder as root without changing the permission on the folder permanently? I am admin and have the sudo password if necessary.
and if i didnt customize partitions when i installsed and just used the whole drive - they're both together in the same partition right, the home just goes into the root? but it still creates a 2-3 gig swapfile?
do you recommend creating separate partitions for the home and root folder during install? is there any benefit besides being able to reinstall ubuntu without losing your data?
When I use the function "Connect to server" / ssh and leave the "folder" field empty and log in, I am taken to the file system root level (/) on the remote system..!! Is this behaviour really the intention? I am really surprised, I would expect to automatically end up in my own home folder on the remote server.
Is there any way to avoid this, except entering "/home/myname" in the folder field? I tried $HOME, ~/, ~, but I got error messages on all.
It is not always obvious where your own home folder is in the remote file system, it might not even be a unix.
I should mention that when I do a command line sftp connection (sftp name@host) to the same server it works as I would expect. So this sftp GUI must do it differently?
I'm completely new to ubuntu and Linux for that matter, i have a TBS 6920 dvb stat car, but have no idea how to install the drivers, i have downloaded them nd had a look at the read me file and it mentions creating a directory in root/ but cant access the root folder for some reason or other, is there anyone who can help me?? also is it possible to install through terminal instead as that would be easier no?
I'm running ubuntu 64-bit server edition so ill have to use the command line for this. i want to create or change a file in my own home folder, i have to do it as sudo, otherwise i get an error message saying "permission denied".
i have downloaded some series into my download folder. apparently i did that as root (cant remember how but ok)now i want to delete some of the folders, but i dont have acces. i tried everything. deleting it while as root, using the command line : " sudo rm -R <folder> was the closest i got and i actually succesfully removed one folder. now the problem is that it was a folder named usr, one word. but when i try to delete a folder with more words, its trying to delete all those words seperatly, like ecery word is a different folder.
I have a folder "scratchbox" created by a user "hari" (which is cross-compilation toolkit, and creates soft-links if it might ). Now I deleted the user "hari" by using userdel command. I didn't uninstall scratchbox from "hari" account. Now even when i login by root, i am unable to remove the "scratchbox" folder.
I wanted to know is there anyway we can change the document root location /var/www to some other custom location. I tried modifying this location information in couple of conf files in /etc/httpd, but I started receiving lots of error messages from selinux on labelling issues. So I had to revert back.
How does one open a folder with root privileges? I am trying to extract a screenlet into a screenlet folder but it says permission denied. How do i change that?
