View 3 RepliesJust want to refresh and check to make sure I don't make a mistake, but I am spoiled now with my newer OS's, binary apps, etc. and helping out someone right now who has some old servers and some apps need upgrading like proftp, etc. ALL apps are compiled, I have the old src folder, even the config.h file which if I clean the cobwebs will give me the config settings that were used right? Basically I want to do an in place upgrade from an old to new version and don't want to kill what's there, so I am assuming I can do a make with the config.h from the old compile and it should just build with those options, right?

it's possible to compile the 2.6.37 kernel patched with the autogroup patch on a Slackware 13.1 system running 2.6.33.4-smp with 2.6.33.4 headers? I just compiled and installed the 2.6.37-autogroup kernel from AUR on my ARCH setup and I like it especially when using firefox with lots of tabs open and other background apps also running. I did notice a speed and smothness difference in my ARCH testing setup with this kernel patch and I can get same results in 13.1??

I have never done anything like this and I am a Linux newbie, so I would appreciate a "Kernel Patching for Dummies" version if possible. I did do a search on this forum and most of what I read was over my head. I found an FAQ on kernelnewbies.org on "How To Apply A Patch" but when I attempted what they suggested, it said it couldn't find the file to patch at line 5 and asked me which file to patch. so I went to the Ubuntu launchpad and searched for it, and here it is. Someone has already submitted a patch and the bug status has been changed to "fix released."From reading the comments, I've learned the fix is only in Gnome 2.30, and Ubuntu 10.04 uses 2.28 (I think, maybe 2.26) (If it is possible to update to a new version of Gnome, please let me know). Luckily, someone also submitted a patch on the bug report as a temporary fix. Unfortunately, I don't know how to apply the patch. I assume you have to use synaptic to remove the default mplayer that's been installed from the repos, and use a source version of mplayer and add the diff.

I've been working on getting the latest patch for wow to work and i have it downloaded and installed up to 4.0.0 but i know it's supposed to have gone one more patch to 4.0.1. Now when trying to run wow.exe through wine i get two different issues, first one is fatal error 132 comes up then if i relaunch wow it will pull up the user agreement screen but all graphics are gone just showing text.
If i accept and go to the log in screen i'm still only seeing the text no graphics, after that it goes to the downloading update then i get a message saying wow has encountered a serious problem, then it closes. I'm not the most knowledgable on linux but had been running wow perfectly fine till this patch..

But it then asks me for the file to patch. Why? Something that looks strange to me in the patch file: there are a lot of "common subdirectories" lines. Like this:

what you will get: - a transparent nautilus desktop window in compiz, which has the usual desktop integration (icons and context menu) - a working wallpaper plugin, that can be set to show a different wallpaper on every screen - you can even use mplayer to play a video on your background
how it's done: - the nautilus desktop window is modified to render a transpart background, if a composited screen is detected - window type is changed from _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_DESKTOP to _NET_WM_WINDOW_TYPE_NOTIFICATION - window is set to be keept below all other windows and the mouse wheel event is proxied to the root window the patch was developed for nautilus 2.28.1 (Ubuntu 9.10) first and then applied to nautilus 2.30.1 (Ubuntu 10.04) the only difference in 2.28.1 is that there is one more row (below set_image_properties) in the original eel-background.c
I just can't seem to overcome this issue. I downloaded the LatinSud patch from

I couldn't find for the life of me find linux-source-2.6.20 but I did have the repository for 2.6.38 so I did this. #sudo apt-get install linux-source-2.6.38 build-essential gawk
I then did the following
#cd /usr/src/
#tar jxvf linux-source-2.6.38.tar.bz2
At this point I got a whole ton of response that said "Cannot open: No such file or directory" "Cannot mkdir: Permission denied" Pretty much got spammed with that for like a couple hundred files/folders. I knew something was wrong but I kept going(lol).
#cd linux-source-2.6.38
#sudo cp ~/bcm43xx-injection-linux-2.6.22.patch bcm43xx-injection-linux-2.6.22.patch
#sudo cp ../linux-headers-2.6.38-8-generic/.config .config
#sudo patch -p1 -i bcm43xx-injection-linux-2.6.22.patch

I did the latest patch/update to lucid this morning and it would appear that my Volume control has gone missing from the task bar. There doesn't seem to be a volume control in Applications > Sounds & Video either. I am sure this has to do with the patch upgrade that I installed as everything was working fine before. For that matter, I had no system sounds either and it took a power off reboot for that to come back. My Music program (atunes) is not working properly either and keeps locking up. How do I reverse this patch or get my system back to a functional state?
