Ubuntu :: How To Test Usb Ports
Jan 5, 2010
I want to test automatically if the USB ports are in use.
I want to test it in a bash script
I found some information about ttyUSB0 in the /dev/
The problem is, there is usb hub between the system and the mouse/keyboard. The other USB port is in use for the Ubuntu live usb.
When I open the /dev/ map virtual and pull out the usb keyboard the hidraw1 diappears, same for the keyboard.
When both are out and I pull out the usb hub, nothing happens.
Do anyone know how to test it?

I am trying to install mysql 5.1.44..so i downloaded the binary package, i extracted it and then followed the instructions that were in the manual but i keep getting this error when running this command
Code:
scripts/mysql_install_db --basedir=/home/mosty/mysql
the error is
Code:
Installing MySQL system tables...
100315 20:07:27 [Warning] Can't create test file /var/lib/mysql/mosty.lower-test
100315 20:07:27 [Warning] Can't create test file /var/lib/mysql/mosty.lower-test
[code]....
You can try to start the mysqld daemon with:
shell> /home/mosty/mysql/bin/mysqld --skip-grant &
and use the command line tool /home/mosty/mysql/bin/mysql to connect to the mysql database and look at the grant tables:
shell> /home/mosty/mysql/bin/mysql -u root mysql
mysql> show tables

All of a sudden NONE of my usb ports work? I can't get USB drives to work or an external drive. They aren't recogonized at all and the lights on them don't light up.

After reading a lot about networking and security I decided to check the security of my own ubuntu box. So I went installing Nmap and discovered that port 139 was "open". Since I 'd read how to use ufw I created a deny rule for port 139. After a second scan with Nmap it still said that port 139 was open as shown below.

A few months ago I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my girlfriends laptop, on her request, as she didn't like Windows any more. Since then the internet connection periodically slows down due to too many open ports/connections. Always when this happens I call our ISP and usually there are around 80-200(!) active connections to various IP's.
She is not downloading torrents or anything.
She only uses Firefox and a few open tabs as people do.
Skype is open.
Wireless internet connection.
I am thinking either Ubuntu is updating more or less constantly or the ports/connections aren't closed "after use".

I dont know how, but somehow all the ports on my comp appear to be blocked except for 24, for ssh and 5900 unknown. I can connect to the network, but as far as I can tell, I'm powerless to do anything. No webpages load, I'm typing this on my phone.

I've installed many different versions on Ubuntu, many different times and I've never had a problem with transmission... untill now. I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 ( I was already previously using 10.04) and I updated and set up transmission but when I tested the port it said it was closed. This has never happened before.
I tried changing the port about 15 times but it says they are all closed. So I tried opening one..
Code:
sudo iptables -A INPUT -p tcp --dport 50970 -j ACCEPT
... but still nothing. I have no firewall running and everything else works fine. Transmission was working before, on the same ports, same version of transmission, and same version of Ubuntu. Nothing has changed.

I'm locking down my laptop. I know I can use a firewall to ensure nothing gets through that I didn't catch, and I certainly plan on using one, but in the meantime, I want to know what exactly is running on my system.
nmap localhost returns:
Code:
james@james-linux:~$ nmap localhost
Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-07-26 23:33 CDT
Warning: Hostname localhost resolves to 2 IPs. Using 127.0.0.1.
Interesting ports on localhost (127.0.0.1):
Not shown: 994 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
25/tcp open smtp
111/tcp open rpcbind
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
631/tcp open ipp
2049/tcp open nfs
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.18 seconds
However, I know that localhost goes back to the loopback interface, 127.0.0.1. So, to see what was really open, I ran nmap 192.168.0.108, which is my laptop's IP at the moment.
Code:
james@james-linux:~$ nmap 192.168.0.108
Starting Nmap 5.00 ( http://nmap.org ) at 2010-07-26 23:33 CDT
Interesting ports on 192.168.0.108:
Not shown: 996 closed ports
PORT STATE SERVICE
111/tcp open rpcbind
139/tcp open netbios-ssn
445/tcp open microsoft-ds
2049/tcp open nfs
Nmap done: 1 IP address (1 host up) scanned in 0.14 seconds
Now if I understand correctly, I can attribute 139 and 445 to my Samba share. That I'm okay with. What I don't know is 111 and 2049. Does anyone know what these ports are, what's running on them, and how I could turn them off, supposing that they are a security risk?

I have ssh running on port 22 and that is the only thing I want in/out of this particular box (ssh, scp). But when I use iptables to set the default policies for INPUT, FORWARD, and OUTPUT to DROP and then allow 22:
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
ssh stops working.

I was following the directions over on the page How to watch Hulu overseas without a proxy server and got to the section about blocking ports, which I need to block port 1935. I figured this would be easy, as the mac instructions are
Code:
sudo ipfw add 0 deny tcp from any to any 1935
sudo ipfw add 0 deny udp from any to any 1935
and the Windows instructions are practically a book in itself. Since this page was lacking instructions on how to do it in Ubuntu, and ipfw seemingly doesn't exist in Ubuntu, how do I block the ports

The two integrated USB ports on a laptop of mine running Ubuntu 10.10 mysteriously stopped working a while back after some random updates. They still have power, and they are still recognized by the system, as per lsusb:
Code:
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
But although the ports still power up any connected appliances, they won't actually function. Any mouse I've tried so far won't work, nor will any external USB drive mount when connected. I don't even know where to begin to look. I believe the problem arose after an update to the xorg server, but I'm not sure. I just updated the kernel to 2.6.35-27, but that didn't solve the problem.

I'm getting heat from the head networking office that ports 21, 110, and 143 are open. I can telnet to those ports from a remote machine (not localhost) and get a prompt. There does not seem to be anything listening on those ports according to netstat. I've tried using iptables to discard all traffic to a from those ports but I can still telnet to them. This is a lucid desktop machine.

I'm trying to open my ports all the way, but for some reason, I am unable to do so. I've forwarded the ports I want open in my router (I switched between two routers to make sure), I made exceptions in Firestarter, and I even added UFW rules, but when I use pretty much any and every port checking tool out there, the ports eithere back stealthed or closed.I'm not a complete noob, and I'm not an expert, but I'm p sure I'm doing everything right, seeing as there isn't much to screw up.The reason I'm trying to fully open these ports is because I'm getting this dumb 'No Incoming Connections

I am having problems with my external hard drive, every time I reboot I have to get on my knees and unplug it from my computer and plug it back in for it to load. There is no power switch on it so i am looking for a way, from the terminal, to reload it.
Using "lsusb" in the terminal I can see:
I heard something about being able to restart a port by the id but can not find anywhere that says how to do this.
Also i was wondering if there is something for Ubuntu like the Perl man pages that just lists all of the commands that a person would use. That would be much preferred to having to look around the Internet every time i need a line of code. And being based on debian would it make sence to look for how to do things in debian if i cant find how to do it in Ubuntu? or will just "in Linux" work?
