Ubuntu :: How Do I Change CPU Fan Speed

Jul 27, 2010

In Windows (which I can happily say that I no longer have) I had a program called SpeedFan, which monitored the temperatures of my hardware and also my fan speeds. In Ubuntu I monitor my temperatures and fan speed through and AWN applet called Hardware Sensors; however I cannot find a program to change the fan speed. I think that it is just running at full speed in Ubuntu, I'm sure it was slower in Windows.

Ubuntu :: Change Scroll Speed In Firefox?

Is there anyway to change the scroll speed for the mouse in Firefox? Right now it leaps down a long way for each click of the scroll wheel, practically leaving me cross eyed and having to search for my position where I was reading. I can't seem to find a way to adjust this anywhere.

Ubuntu :: How To Change Mouse Scroll Speed

Jan 7, 2011

I know its possible because 2 days ago the "scroll speed" was perfect. The only thing that has changed is that I have used a different usb port for my mouse now, and I have installed a copy of windows 7 on my second HD. However, after all this, my mouse scroll speed on Ubuntu is unbearably too fast. Its almost half a page for every one "click" of the mouse scroll wheel.

Ubuntu :: Change Mouse Scroll SPeed?

Apr 30, 2011

I was wondering if it's possible to change how much my mouse wheel scrolls. For some reason it scrolls way more than is normal (not just in web browsers, but in every application). It works fine on Windows 7, but it seems to not work well with Linux distros.I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed, and I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: LMMS- Change Pitch And Not Speed?

Aug 23, 2010

I noticed that, when choosing different notes, LMMS not only changes the pitch of the instrument, but also the speed. So, if an instrument makes a sound that lasts about 5 seconds, a really low note can make it last about 10 seconds, and a really high note can last about 1 second. Is there a way to configure how LMMS handles sounds so that it changes their pitch, without changing their speed?

Ubuntu :: Change The Mouse Scroll Wheel Speed?

Feb 27, 2011

After an amazing ordeal with drivers, terminals, and command-line codes, I finally found an ethernet cable that plugged in correctly, installed the drivers, and now I have wireless! Yahoo!

Now, about another problem...

The mouse scroll wheel speed/line skipping is way too fast. It skips half the page in one scroll! Is there a menu (like Windows) that lets you customize this?

In technical terms, it's a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 with BlueTrack technology.

Ubuntu :: Settings To Change Maximum Allowed Speed Of CPU

Jul 11, 2011

I have an AMD Athlon Regor 2.8 Ghz Dual Core CPU. About a month ago I overclocked the bad boy to 3.36 Ghz, on stock voltage. Since I have an AMD chip, I have the Cool and Quiet feature. With CnQ on, it never shows more than 2.8 Ghz (my stock speed), even on Full Load. However, with it off, it shows the correct 3360 Mhz all the time. I would like to keep CnQ, as well as my overclock. I've read in forums that it's okay to do that, that CnQ will automatically clock up to overclock when needed. But for me, with CnQ on, it only hits 2.8. Nothing more. Is this an Ubuntu problem? Is there a setting where I can change the maximum allowed speed of my CPU?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: NVidia GTS250 Running Hot - Can't Change Fan Speed

Jun 28, 2010

I'm running a XFX Nvidia GTS 250 512MB card. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 and so far I'm loving it - apart from one small issue. Using 195.36.24 drivers, I cannot control the fan speed - it keeps running the card pretty hot - hitting 75 deg. C when one OpenGL game is running. The fan barely goes over 60% speed - I'd rather have it run at 80% constantly to keep the temps under control.

There are drivers on nvidia website which "seem" to be a lot newer : 256.35 (using 64bit Linux) - are those "direct replacement" for the 195.36 which Ubuntu installs by default?

I have a well ventilated case (1x120mm pulling air, 1x120mm pushing out, neat cabling, etc). I have found nvclock but no joy - even with -force it doesn't want to change fan speed.

General :: F13 - Can Not Change CPU Speed In System / Enable This?

Dec 5, 2010

I have Fedora 13 installed on my laptop. For some reason it always seems to run at 1GHz even though the maximum is 1.67GHz (even under 100% load).

The output of cpufreq-info code...

I tried changing the limits by setting cpufreq-set -r -g userspace -c 0 -d 1000MHz -u 1670MHz but the output it still identical (in particular "frequency should be within 1000 MHz and 1000 MHz").

Any ideas how to change the limits?

General :: Does SpeedStep Change Bus Speed Or Just Multiplier?

Sep 1, 2011

I want to estimate how a certain piece of code will perform on different Intel Westmere processors. The various processors all support the same QPI and memory speed, and they all have the same cache sizes; the only difference is the CPU core clock speed (2.66GHz vs. 2.93GHz etc.) I already have one such processor running with a very fast CPU core clock. I would like to estimate the performance of the others without having to purchase them first.

Using cpufreq-set on Linux (acpi-cpufreq driver), I can set my core clock speed to a variety of slower values. My question is simply this: Does setting the core clock speed in this way change anything other than the core clock speed? That is, does it precisely simulate a slower CPU, or does it also slow down the front side bus or change the cache size or whatever?

Networking :: Can't Change To 1000 Speed With Ethtool?

Aug 9, 2010

I have two onboard gigabit connections and a PCI-E gigabit card, none of which seem to want to run beyond 100M. Everytime I issue the command to change speed to 1000M, it does nothing. I have tried modifying the interfaces file to make sure the command line for ethtool gets done automatically, but still no luck.

Below is the output from the use of ethtool to change speed. Since I am having performance issues with my local area networking (e.g. Samba transferring slower than the internet), I have been trying to figure out how to debug my network performance, and this was an obvious thing that stood out. The router and card are gigabit, yet don't use their full transfer rates.

Ubuntu :: Slow Run From USB / Speed It Up?

May 20, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 from a USB key (16GB). Overall I'm pretty fine with it but there are a few problems I am having. It seems to be very slow. In particular, Firefox and Pidgin freeze every now and then, before becoming active again. The same thing also happens for other applications such as Rhythmbox, Gedit, and the terminal. Additionally my start up and shut down times are horrible (worse than when I use Vista and Ubuntu 8.04). I was wondering if there is something with my install or if this is all due to the fact that I am running from a USB. I don't think it's the USB since I ran 8.04 from a USB HDD (55GB) and didn't have any problems with speed.

Ubuntu :: Speed Up The Internet 11.04 ?

May 21, 2011

I was wondering does anyone have any ideas/suggestions for speeding up internet responsiveness.

I have done the Disable IPV6 trick, never really made any difference.

I mean don't get me wrong my internet works just when I type a link then hit 'Go' the browser takes a few seconds to comprehend the grueling task ahead.

When I use my Win 7 the response time is almost instant and I also get about an extra 3-4mb speed difference.

Win 7: Downsteam 13.7Mb, Upstream 0.9Mbs

Ubuntu 11.04: Downstream 9.2Mb, Upstream 0.8Mbs

NB. I use Chromium on Ubuntu and Chrome on Win7. Running 11.04 x64. Wireless Network card is something to do with the driver RT73USB

Ubuntu :: Optimize For Speed?

i didn't know where to post this so i decided on "General" section. I'm working with kind of an "old" computer, low HDD and graphics, but decent amount of RAM and good processor ( for an old computer, and it was bough for company use ) So i want to speed things up a bit, i don't mind waiting a bit longer when GIMP is loading, but FireFox is giving me issues, loads slower, and internet isn't as fast as its suppose to be, i started playing a game on facebook recently and it was fine, but lately it takes for ever to load and do things in it, i tweaked some options in it, and its better, but now when i click response time is slower ( altogether is quicker but still not enough )
Is there anything i can do?

Ubuntu :: Graphics - Change To A Warped Mix Of Colors And Pixels When Change The Background Image

My netbook runs on an AMD Athlon 64-bit processor with ATI Radeon X1270 HyperMemory up to 256MB graphics.

So far I have tried reinstalling, and even the 64bit desktop edition which had the same problem. Ive noticed that it freaks out when i scroll too quick, when changing background images, and on certain websites. Then other times its completely random. Ubuntu :: Change File Permissions To Change Background Screen?

Feb 21, 2010

I'm new to Ubuntu Linux but have many years on windows platform. Please can someone help me with how to change the following items.

No.1 I would like to change the HORRIBLE!! YAK!! brown background color behind the word Ubuntu in the start up screen when the machine loads up (before the login). I have located the image file for this which I have found to be: /usr/share/images/xsplash/bg_2560x1600. jpg but the OS says that root is the owner and that I don't have permission to change this. So how can I change this for a color I do like.

No.2 I would also like to change the login dialogue screen style. I know this is possible but again I'm fumbling to see how I can do this. I have tried with the start up manager but every attempt fails, the settings don't take. Once again I suspect permissions are at the bottom of the problem?

No.3 Would like to have a colorful splash screen image on boot up, I've managed to remove the old one (small white 3 ring ubuntu logo on black background) but havent been able to install or replace with a new one. Its been incredibly frustrating, I'm feel sure I'm missing something simple here. Wondering if its permissions yet again?

Anyone who can offer help on any of the above, guidance or advise me would be much appreciated. Please bear in mind that I'm still very much feeling my way with Linux so keep it simple.
