I am using opera 10.10 built 4742 i686 version. My proble is when i change to other workspace and then go back to opera, sometime, it will have the typing problem (at search bar and address bar). Need to roll it up and then roll it down before can type again. I am using Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit with latest updated.
However, the opera (same version and get from the same source: [URL]) does not have the same problem on Linux Mint 8 (dual-boot with ubuntu 9.10). As i know Linux Mint 8 is based on ubuntu 9.10.

I am running kubuntu 10.04 (32 bit) and have installed the latest version of the Opera 10.53 beta.
My problem is that I cannot change the icon for Opera in the Kickoff menu or on the desktop. I tried right clicking on the Kickoff Application Launcher widget on the panel and choosing Menu Editor; Navigated to Opera and changed the icon from the default KDE icon (opera) to the new styled Opera icon (opera-browser), but it doesn't change.

Background info
1) Compaq laptop, legacy free (no COM or LPT ports, USB only)
2) The laptop owner has dial-up and can't get broadband right now.
3) The laptop is running F12 with the PAE kernel.
4) Internal modem is a Conexant modem masquerading as Intel ICHxxx chipset. All attempts at getting a driver to work for this so far have failed.
5) I downloaded a Linuxant RPM but this failed to work.
So my only option that will get the computer back to its owner is an external modem using a Prolific PL2303 USB to SERIAL adaptor cable. When using the PL2303 cable my external modem appears as /dev/ttyUSB0 For the most part this works fine. I used the steps in the solution from the following thread
[URL]
The only problem I have is getting PPP to work THROUGH the cable. I have verified the cable is the issue. HOW?
1) I have tested all the modems on another machine with F12 through the onboard COM port. All modems dial, connect, then authenticate and maintain connection until I manually disconnect.
2) I have tested all modems used on the other machine with the PL2303 and can replicate the problem on that machine.
3) I have used more than one PL2303 cable and get the same behaviour.
Using the network configuration utility / wvdial / modem lights OR kppp produces the same results when controlling the modem located at /dev/ttyUSB0 So do I
1) have to make some configuration changes to relating to /dev/ttyUSB0
OR
2) is the something in ppp that needs configuring
OR
3) is it something else altogether that I am not aware of?

In Windows (which I can happily say that I no longer have) I had a program called SpeedFan, which monitored the temperatures of my hardware and also my fan speeds. In Ubuntu I monitor my temperatures and fan speed through and AWN applet called Hardware Sensors; however I cannot find a program to change the fan speed. I think that it is just running at full speed in Ubuntu, I'm sure it was slower in Windows.

Is there anyway to change the scroll speed for the mouse in Firefox? Right now it leaps down a long way for each click of the scroll wheel, practically leaving me cross eyed and having to search for my position where I was reading. I can't seem to find a way to adjust this anywhere.

I know its possible because 2 days ago the "scroll speed" was perfect. The only thing that has changed is that I have used a different usb port for my mouse now, and I have installed a copy of windows 7 on my second HD. However, after all this, my mouse scroll speed on Ubuntu is unbearably too fast. Its almost half a page for every one "click" of the mouse scroll wheel.

I was wondering if it's possible to change how much my mouse wheel scrolls. For some reason it scrolls way more than is normal (not just in web browsers, but in every application). It works fine on Windows 7, but it seems to not work well with Linux distros.I have Ubuntu 11.04 installed, and I'm using a Microsoft Wireless Notebook Optical Mouse 4000.

On a modern system--Lucid, SATA 3.0--does the location of a file on the physical disk make an appreciable difference to its access speed? If so, is there a (safe) way to put a file in a particular place on the disk?
I ask because I would like to reserve some space on disk to remain unused without messing with the partition table. My thought was to do this by using dd to create some large files (4 Gb each, or so) containing zeros. But obviously I would like to put them on the slowest part of the disk, as they won't be used for anything.

I noticed that, when choosing different notes, LMMS not only changes the pitch of the instrument, but also the speed. So, if an instrument makes a sound that lasts about 5 seconds, a really low note can make it last about 10 seconds, and a really high note can last about 1 second. Is there a way to configure how LMMS handles sounds so that it changes their pitch, without changing their speed?

After an amazing ordeal with drivers, terminals, and command-line codes, I finally found an ethernet cable that plugged in correctly, installed the drivers, and now I have wireless! Yahoo!
Now, about another problem...
The mouse scroll wheel speed/line skipping is way too fast. It skips half the page in one scroll! Is there a menu (like Windows) that lets you customize this?
In technical terms, it's a Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 with BlueTrack technology.

I have an AMD Athlon Regor 2.8 Ghz Dual Core CPU. About a month ago I overclocked the bad boy to 3.36 Ghz, on stock voltage. Since I have an AMD chip, I have the Cool and Quiet feature. With CnQ on, it never shows more than 2.8 Ghz (my stock speed), even on Full Load. However, with it off, it shows the correct 3360 Mhz all the time. I would like to keep CnQ, as well as my overclock. I've read in forums that it's okay to do that, that CnQ will automatically clock up to overclock when needed. But for me, with CnQ on, it only hits 2.8. Nothing more. Is this an Ubuntu problem? Is there a setting where I can change the maximum allowed speed of my CPU?

I like my bottom panel to auto hide. I have this setup on 2 computers. On one computer, it's much faster with hiding/showing than the other computer.Could it be a performance thing that effects it? mean, the one that's quicker is a quad core with 4gb of ram, whereas the one that's slower is a pentium 4 with 1gb of ram.

I'm running a XFX Nvidia GTS 250 512MB card. I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 and so far I'm loving it - apart from one small issue. Using 195.36.24 drivers, I cannot control the fan speed - it keeps running the card pretty hot - hitting 75 deg. C when one OpenGL game is running. The fan barely goes over 60% speed - I'd rather have it run at 80% constantly to keep the temps under control.
There are drivers on nvidia website which "seem" to be a lot newer : 256.35 (using 64bit Linux) - are those "direct replacement" for the 195.36 which Ubuntu installs by default?
I have a well ventilated case (1x120mm pulling air, 1x120mm pushing out, neat cabling, etc). I have found nvclock but no joy - even with -force it doesn't want to change fan speed.

I have Fedora 13 installed on my laptop. For some reason it always seems to run at 1GHz even though the maximum is 1.67GHz (even under 100% load).
The output of cpufreq-info code...
I tried changing the limits by setting cpufreq-set -r -g userspace -c 0 -d 1000MHz -u 1670MHz but the output it still identical (in particular "frequency should be within 1000 MHz and 1000 MHz").
Any ideas how to change the limits?

I want to estimate how a certain piece of code will perform on different Intel Westmere processors. The various processors all support the same QPI and memory speed, and they all have the same cache sizes; the only difference is the CPU core clock speed (2.66GHz vs. 2.93GHz etc.) I already have one such processor running with a very fast CPU core clock. I would like to estimate the performance of the others without having to purchase them first.
Using cpufreq-set on Linux (acpi-cpufreq driver), I can set my core clock speed to a variety of slower values. My question is simply this: Does setting the core clock speed in this way change anything other than the core clock speed? That is, does it precisely simulate a slower CPU, or does it also slow down the front side bus or change the cache size or whatever?

I have two onboard gigabit connections and a PCI-E gigabit card, none of which seem to want to run beyond 100M. Everytime I issue the command to change speed to 1000M, it does nothing. I have tried modifying the interfaces file to make sure the command line for ethtool gets done automatically, but still no luck.
Below is the output from the use of ethtool to change speed. Since I am having performance issues with my local area networking (e.g. Samba transferring slower than the internet), I have been trying to figure out how to debug my network performance, and this was an obvious thing that stood out. The router and card are gigabit, yet don't use their full transfer rates.

Code:

netbios name = scooby-laptop
server string = "ScoobyDo server (Samba, Ubuntu)"
dns proxy = no

Ubuntu 64bit. The sound system works and plays noises correctly when I test the speakers in sound preferances. The internet BBCi player(Radio) plays sound correctly. Banshee & Rhythmbox try to play music files at double, or more, speed with no sound output. Spotify Linux version also tries to playback at double speed with no sound output. Media Player attempts to play music files at high speed. Media player plays the Video and audio tracks at high speed. VLC Will play the video at normal speed but with no audio.

This on a Vostro 1220 Laptop w/ Intel 5300 wireless:
A.I have long boot up time.I think it's because of the eth0 network search which I don't use.I have an intel wireless 5300 card running. How can I speed up the boot time, i.e. disable or change the eth0 at boot, the searching?
B:When I restart or shutdown, the screen flashes repeatedly and gets some garbled colors along the top before finally rebooting looks like windows ME or something). This vostro has an intel x4500HD vid chipset in it.
C.How do I get into gnome configuration editor to turn on Metacity compositing? Alt-F2 and run gconf-editor doesn't do it. I don't do compiz, but need compositing.
D.I need to install Chromium Browser as it sync my bookmarks.I have RPMforge enabled btw also...how can I do that? I.e. rpm repo for chromium?
This will help me get off to a running start so I can get up to speed on CentOS..

I wanted to change the name of one of volumes/partitions from "New Volume" to "Photos". I had two "new volumes" and it was getting confusing. Thinking this would be an easy process I went into nautilus (gksudo nautilus) and right-clicked on the icon representing the volume, selected Rename and typed in "Photos". I now cannot access that volume from Ubuntu but I can from Windows XP (where it is still labelled "New Volume). When I try to access it I get the error message: "Cannot mount Volume. You are not privileged to mount the volume 'New Volume' " This is the readout from fstab:

I just recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Extensa 4200 laptop. At first all seemed well. My wifi worked for the first time since installing Linux on this machine when I purchased it a year ago. Now come the problems, and as a technically challenged 62 year old, I am at wits end! When I got to "Places" in the Gnome Panel, instead of going to a file folder. It opens Firefox! Where instead of folders and files, I see an index of files. If I click on one of them, once again Firefox opens another index of links to files. What gives? Is this something to to with Nautilus, which I don't know how to access? If it is, how do I access Nautilus and change it?
Then my Firefox has no image, video, map etc. search options. When I google something I get only WEB searches, nothing else. I google my address and I get whatever information is on the web, but nothing. No maps or images. The same for my doctors office. There is no way to get a map or directions. What gives. Are my settings all screwed up or what? I resort to buying a windows machine! I deleted windows on this machine shortly after purchase. I always had SOME problems with Ubuntu, but this is ridiculous. It seems that wireless is the only thing that works

I just switched ISPs from a local vendor to Wild Blue. All my Windows boxes adopted automatically. My Ubuntu 10.10 workstation can find no sites, period. My old resolv.conf said:
# Generated by NetworkManager
domain sdc.org (<- my old local ISP)
search sdc.org (<- my old local ISP)
nameserver 192.168.0.1 (<- correct IP V4 address for my router's front end)
This has not changed, and I guess my IP stack is searching for sdc.org domain addresses on WildBlue.net, which don't exist there. After many hours trying to speak with WildBlue Tech Support people, I've decided that domain search questions are beyond their ability to comprehend or discuss. If I could ascertain the domain(s) to search I'd just edit the silly file.
Has anyone else connected with Ubuntu 10.10 on WildBlue?

I am using Ubuntu after a BSOD error. Ubuntu is awesome, I can access all my windows files, however, I need to access my programs on windows. Here's what happened - I accidentally changed permissions after getting a virus. I then tried to do a system restore and during that process the computer crashed. When I try to boot to windows in every possible mode, I am always left with the dreaded blue screen of death.

I want to change the Alt+F key in terminal to not access thefile menu (can't think of what it is called but File, Edit, View, etc...at the top). Alt is bound to access the first letter of the names in the file menus. This eliminates the Alt+F shortcut to move forward a word. I don't even mind so much if I permanently remove the alt binding to access the file menus.
