Ubuntu :: Hosting Web Site From Home
Feb 25, 2011
1) should questions about websites be posted here or the therver platform forum?
2) I'm trying to host a website from an old computer I have. I'm running Ubuntu 10.04; I have installed the LAMP package. I've made it's ip address static on my router (linksys WRT160nv3). I can ssh into it from my desktop on the same home network.
I've been following this guide: URL... I'm trying to make the server public. I've set up DMZ on my router to forward to my server's local ip address.
So now, after going to whatsmyipaddress.com, I can log onto my server from my desktop, which is on my home network, but not anywhere else.I'm fairly sure that my ip address from my ISP is dynamic, but it hasn't changed in the last hour.Let me know if you need anymore details. I'm very new to all of this.

1- How can I prepare my own website in my own pc at home? I have had used Nvu in the past, but it looked to me very unstable (it disappeared from my screen at simple use, despite re-installing it again and again), and I think the Kompozer was also not very far from it, my experience.
2- How can I prepare my pc to run that website? What Linux software I need to download for? Do I really need to have a great cash to transform my poor pc into it? I think that because it is Linux-Ubuntu, not Windows, the situation can not be any worst or more expensive... uh?
3- In theory, if I have that website in my own pc... how I know that hackers can only see my page (in a separate-isolated folder from other folders, right?) and can not take a tour of my entire pc, documents, photos, etc, including copying or stealing archives or Ooo documents? It is not that the same way when (by example) a hacker can steal the next Stephen King book or script and sell/display it worldwide without even his knowledge?

I want them all to be accessed via same web site . some of the server in our network are embedded devices.they have their specific utility being hosted on that machine. So the severs are bound to be distributed . I just wanted to know how can I access them via single ip, domain name.

I'm using Ubuntu Server (32bit) on a machine at home. I've bought a domain name(s) via Heartinternet.co.uk and my ISP is Bethere.co.uk I have installed my LAMP Server on my home based server and it's accessible via my static IP address. HTTP is forwarded on my router to my Ubuntu (web)Server. Now then, in laymen's terms, I want my domain name to resolve to my Ubuntu Server. I have installed and configured Bind9 to this guide found online: http://goo.gl/M3Pk i understand that I need to do this in order to 'host' the domain name. Or alternatively, if my presumptions are correct, I could leave the domain name with the registrar and use their DNS config panel to add an A record to point at my webserver (static IP address)???
If I forward port 53 (default for DNS) to my server (after setting up bind9 correctly) and within my domain name hosting options change the nameserver settings to point at my static ip address then would this be enough to host my domain from my home network?
I feel I nearly have a whole picture but...not quite. There's a multitude of vague guides on the internet (vague or I'm not reading them properly!)

I am trying to set up a home web server for my personal site using Ubuntu 11.04 and Apache. I have set up a user called www and given it FTP access to its home area (/home/www) using vsftpd. I then edited /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and set the DocumentRoot directive to /home/www. When I made a test index.html file in that directory it worked fine. Then I FTP'd to the server (as www) from another PC and uploaded the site files. Now when I try to access the site I get an error 403 (forbidden).Obviously I'm doing something wrong here but I'm not sure what. What should I do to fix this.

I would like to replace my aging Freenas box with a CentOS based NAS. I would like it to have the following features:
- SAMBA with Web admin
- BIND with Web admin
- Nice to have would be native AFP support for my MAC
Question 1: Is SWAT still the current Web-based config tool for SAMBA or is there something newer?
Question 2: Is there a decent, reliable, web front end for BIND?
Question 3: Is there a current AFP guide for CentOS, everything I am finding via Google is years old.
I would also like to build a second server that I would host off-site to sync my data to.
- I was thinking OpenVPN for the link between the servers. The "remote" NAS will have to be the one initiating the connection.
Question 4: Is OpenVPN the way to go or is there something better? (I need bidirectional communications)
Question 5: Is rsync still the way to go for the data sync or is there something newer which would be lighter and/or faster?
Just need some "current" advice overall - I think the last SAMBA box I built was 4-5 years ago so what I learned then may not be applicable today.

I have to ubuntu machine (9.10 and 10.4) with a openvpn tunnel between them. This is the situation:
Code:
NetworkA 192.168.0.0/24
|
UbuntuA br0:192.168.0.3 (openvpn bridge between eth0 and tap0)[code].....
UbuntuA has one only interface etho and there are two openvpn instance: one bridge istance with br0 and another instance with tun0.
UbuntuA is not the gateway for networkA. UbuntuB is the gateway for NetworkB.I need to comunicate between pc on networkB e those on networkA.This is the "ping situation" (no pc tested has an active firewall):
ubuntuA vs ubuntuB: OK
ubuntuB vs ubuntuA: OK
pc on NetworkA vs ubuntuA and ubuntuB: OK[code].....

I am trying to set up a web based FTP site on my home server, I got ftp up and running and I can log into it using an ftp client but I want to set it up so I can get to it from the web. I put the directory in the www/html folder but that does not seem to help it
If anyone could point me in the right direction that would be great. I also need to let anonymous users get access to it.

I've been on a quest to enable full routing through my openvpn tunnel between my office and the colo. Masquerading will work, however it will throw off anything key based and makes a lot of things just more difficult and vague in general. Is there an easy way to do this via iptables? I tried using quagga hoping it would magically solve my problems, however it does not seem to do my routing for me . I just did a basic static route within zebra...

I have three locations with a central office connected to two remote locations. At the central office I run on a cisco asa 5505 two site to site vpns. The remote end of the first site is a checkpoint firewall , and the remote end of the second site is racoon on debian. Both sites are up and working. However, where at the first site traffic goes both ways, at the second site it only works from the central office to the remote office.
For example, I can ssh from a host in the central office to a host in the first remote site (through checkpoint firewall,) then ssh back from that host at the remote office to any host in the central office. In contrast, after I ssh from a host in the central office to a host in the second remote office (through racoon), I cannot see the central office hosts (ping the ip address of a central office host, ssh, etc. all fail.) The vpn settings at the central office (the cisco asa 5505) are identical. So it seems to me that some routing magic is missing on the host running racoon at the second remote office. Where would such setting reside? racoon config files? iptables?

In the office there is a local network with samba+openldap PDC. The local domain name is company.net. The company desided to create a corporate Website on a remote hosting and desided that the site's domain should be company.net which is same as local network's domain name. So now it is not possible to reach that corporate website from within the company's local network because, as I guess, bind9 which is installed on above menioned PDC looks for company.net on a local webserver. Is there a possibility to let people from this local network browse the remote site?

I've decided to start a new project/second business. Namely, I want to create my own website hosting/design service and I need to know where to start. I've been reading up on some topics related to this, but as far as implementing my idea, I still have some questions. Should note here that previously, my only experience with hosting was putting a page up for a friend via godaddy.com....
I've gotten my hands on a Poweredge 6800, 4 processors 2.8 gHz, (currently) 4 73 gb u320 hard drives. I know that I want to run a RAID setup that allows for redundancy (not sure if I should just set up the 4 drives as 2 disks with mirroring or not). I also for the forseeable future will have to run everything off of one server. With the server came Windows Server 2003 disks and license.
From what I've seen/read, it seems a LAMP server would be the way to go. My main question is this: Since I am running everything off of one server for now, am I right in thinking that Ubuntu Server would be the better way to go for ease of use, and reduced resource usage? Also, is it simpler to use a static IP address from my ISP or the dynamic IP addresses they give you? The final question is this: while I like the idea of H-sphere, are there better all in one hosting apps/control panels that don't have as high a learning curve/hardware requirements?

I know this is an Ubuntu forum, but I couldn't think of a better place off the top of my head to ask peoples' opinions on web hosting and domain name purchasing. (That's a compliment, and yes, I am a Linux Mint/Ubuntu user).
I'm looking to purchase a .com domain name, and I'm looking for FTP hosting and email. Before giving me any advice, please know that I will not sign up for hosting with a company from which I cannot reclaim the domain name if I should ever choose to switch hosts. In other words, I need the guarantee that I own the domain [name], and not the host. Please let me know if you have an opinion.

I put this in the General Help section since this potentially deals with multiple things. Without further ado...On my Desktop, My host OS is Windows 7 while thru VMware i have Ubuntu as a Guest OS. I know it's easier to just use Ubuntu solely on the Desktop to host it as a media server, but for certain reasons (family and friends mostly) I'm using VMware instead. My goal is to use my Ubuntu OS thru VMware for others in my household to access it. So far, my Windows host can pick it up the media it's sharing, but not the rest of the network. I know it has to do with the NAT that VMware uses, but what's the best way to configure it to where other laptops, and ps3's on the network can see it?

I always used to wonder how do web hosting companies host their websites. My problem is I saw some one having their website.I have a degree in Computer Science. I am not clear as how do these web hosting companies give the logins to their users as root. Meaning how can a hosting provider provide root login to say 1000 users and each having a different IP address.

After searching I cannot find what I am looking for. My wife has comissioned me to put together a cheap website to highlight her crochet projects. I had used OSX's web site server in the past. where the folder for web sites are in Ubuntu. This would get very low traffic and would be fine on a desktop computer. I see no reason to install Ubuntu server.

I'm fairly new at this Ubuntu and what not so I need a detailed tutorial
So this is what I need to know:
==> Where to put the webpage files
==> How to configure the server to open it up to the world wide web
==> How to change the IP Address to Static and how to know what to change it to.
==> How to point the registered domain to the server.
Like I said I'm fairly new at this so please be as detailed as possible!

trying to use this program [URL].. to work with my dynamic ip address so i can host a small website on my ubuntu 11.04 machine with [URL].. following is the install instructions and after that is the results of the first two commands: './configure' and then 'make' which results in the error at the bottom. im not sure what this means or how to fix it. any suggestions? the products website has no info.
The simplest way to compile this package is: 1. `cd' to the directory containing the package's source code and type./configure' to configure the package for your system. If you're using `csh' on an old version of System V, you might need to type sh ./configure' instead to prevent `csh' from trying to execute `configure' itself.

im trying to use ssh on my web hosting to install a magento testing website but i can't connect to it. i tried reading this [URL]...but now im stuck with this instruction.. By default the public key is saved in the file ~/.ssh/id_dsa.pub, while ~/.ssh/id_dsa is the private key. Now copy the id_dsa.pub file to the remote host and appended it to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2: i searched for the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys2 in my web hosting file manager but i didn't find it..

I want to set up a hosting control panel solution on my Ubuntu LAMP server to make it easier to administer virtual hosts, users, databases, and so on. I'm completely disgusted with how drastically the installation seems to alter your system (I highly doubt it even works at all with Debian/Ubuntu).
I'd actually prefer something that was more than JUST a web hosting manager, but that gave me options for managing my server in general. What control panel option would you recommend?
Most importantly, I want something that's going to work well with the Apache config standards that are unique to Debian/Ubuntu and won't require a PhD to setup. I really like the default Apache/PHP stack in Ubuntu. Of course I'm particularly interested in Open Source solutions. The new OpenPanel project sounds really exciting, and I've heard lots of people talking about Webmin. Others I've heard good things about include VHCS, ispCP, and ISPConfig.

I've got a small web hosting service, for some of my friends. Where I want my friends to be able to have dedicated virtual servers just for a simple LAMP and ftp-server.
I've got quite limited hardware.
AMD Athlon II (Dual core)
4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 RAM
100 Mbit Fiber-lan ( Dynamic IP )
What I would want to know is how to create the virtual servers in an truly optimal way. Should I use KVM or VirtualBox? How can I make the request to mydomain.org go to one of the virtual servers and the request to anotherdomain.com go to another virtual server?
If the virtual server is the best solution.
* How much memory should be sufficient for a simple LAMP/FTP-server?
* What would be the most optimal settings for my limited hardware capacity?
