Ubuntu :: HDMI Audio Not Working?

Feb 3, 2010

I have a Mythbuntu 9.0.4 fresh install and seem to be having issues with audio over HDMI. I can get audio over the headset output (green round port).

I am guessing this probably has something to do with the default sound card that is used to output when I play something, say internet radio. how to configure Ubuntu to use the HDMI output as default.

The motherboard is: [URL]

Output of the following:
$ cat /proc/asound/cards
0 [SB ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI SB
HDA ATI SB at 0xfe7f4000 irq 16
1 [HDMI ]: HDA-Intel - HDA ATI HDMI
HDA ATI HDMI at 0xfe9e8000 irq 19

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HDMI Audio Not Working?

May 13, 2010

I am running 10.04 with an integrated Radeon HD3200 card. When I set up the tv through hdmi, the sound works perfectly; however, when I switch to analog audio to play something else, the next time I try to use hdmi audio I get nothing. It shows to have good level through Pulse Audio Volume Control - shows like there is a sound coming through it, but I get no audio through the tv. The only way I can fix this is by uninstalling proprietary drivers and reverting back to generic configuration and then reinstalling proprietary drivers. I have to revert back to generic in order to get the sound working again.

I would like to add that the laptop onboard speakers work fine.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HDMI On GA-H55 Audio Not Working Fully

I have been pining over and over through 100s of forum posts to no avail. My problem is that my audio through HDMI does not work fully. I upgraded to 1.0.23 alsa release, which seemed to help, but I cant get anything besides 'Digital Stereo (HDMI) Output' from System-Preferences-Sound. Maybe this is normal, and I will have to rely on xbmc, etc. to provide 5.1 surround sound?

Debian Hardware :: Jessie - Radeon HDMI Audio Not Working On Kernels 3.12 And Up

Jun 15, 2014

I am running a small Debian Jessie installation on my Zotac Nano AD10 (based on AMD's E-350, Radeon 6310). I use it as an MPD server, it outputs to my receiver over HDMI.

Up until kernel 3.11 that works fine. My GRUB command line looks like this (default grub.cfg file):

Code: Select all$ grep radeon /etc/default/grub
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet elevator=noop radeon.audio=1 radeon.dpm=1"

Up till 3.11, this worked fine. The available outputs in alsamixer are unmuted [00]. Aplay reports this:

Code: Select all$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Generic [HD-Audio Generic], device 3: HDMI 0 [HDMI 0]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 1: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC892 Analog [ALC892 Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I also set the HDMI output as system-wide default:

Code: Select all$ cat /etc/asound.conf
pcm.!default {
      type plug
      slave {
      pcm "hw:0,3" # HDMI audio
      }
        }

Running speakertest on device 0,3 though, - no sound:

Code: Select all$ speaker-test --device plughw:0,3

speaker-test 1.0.27.2

Playback device is plughw:0,3
Stream parameters are 48000Hz, S16_LE, 1 channels
Using 16 octaves of pink noise
Rate set to 48000Hz (requested 48000Hz)
Buffer size range from 64 to 16384
Period size range from 32 to 8192
Using max buffer size 16384

[Code] ...

I've tried fixing this repeatedly (3.12, 3.13, 3.14) but everytime i find myself returning to 3.11 because that keeps working.... Some posts suggest running xrandr could get it working, but this is a headless installation, so I cannot use xrandr.

For reference, OpenELEC works on this same system (separate install), and they're up to 3.14 as well. Never had a problem with OpenELEC and the audio not working.

Ubuntu :: No HDMI Audio With Zotac Ion Itx G-E

Jun 25, 2010

I recently put together a small computer on which I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. The plan here was to test the motherboard out for use in a HTPC running linux, and using smplayer and vdpau (not exactly sure if that's the way to say it), I'm running video just fine out of my HDMI cable, but I'm not having any luck getting any audio.

My motherboard is one of those Zotac Ion Itx G-E with an NVidia Geforece 9400 thingamajig. Customer reviews on New Egg said it handled Linux and Mythbuntu well, and that was my reason for making this purchase. When I recieved my motherboard, I loaded Ubuntu as the instructions said I should, and then I attempted to load the disc with the drivers and that failed. Apparently, the disc was designed to run in Windows. I downloaded drivers from the Zotac website which were supposedly designed for linux, however I haven't had any luck installing these. The terminal keeps saying I need the installer.

Ubuntu :: No HDMI Audio & No Multitasking?

Nov 16, 2010

I am big fan of Ubuntu and presently doing a lot of research on switching over to Ubuntu from Windows environment.

First things first
My desktop basic hardware specs
Motherboard: GIGABYTE MA790XT-UD4P
CPU: AMD PHENON 545
GPU: NVIDIA GT240 (1GB)
RAM: 4GB
POWER: 650W
HDD: 1TB

I am using Win 7 64bit and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit Ubuntu installation went smooth and it got updated...

Everything is fine except couple of things

1. No audio output from HDMI.

2. No Multitasking.

I will elaborate the above issues

1. My comp display is my LCD TV which is connected by HDMI cable, usually I get sound from TV speakers when I use Win 7, however in Ubuntu there is option to select the sound output by HDMI but even though after selecting nothing happens...

2. Whenever I am to listen to music in Ubuntu and if I am doing some other work like copying files or opening multiple files or burning DVD's, music gets stuck or it plays pause by pause...so multitasking problems...

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Audio Over HDMI

May 12, 2011

I have been trying for a while now to get the audio over HDMI working from my PNY G210 graphics card and mythtv but with no luck.

I have followed this guide [URL]

prior to following this I only had my motherboards on board audio showing up but I am now at the stage that I can see the HDMI audio and select it and un mute it but still cannot get any sound out of it.

As a side effect after following the steps from the link above, now every time I boot the computer up my on board audio is muted so I need to un mute it from sound preferences.

This is my audio config as it stands:
scott@MythtvFrontend:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: AD198x Analog [AD198x Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1

[Code].....

The mother board is a an ASUS MN32-SLI deluxe and I have 2 graphics cards in it, a 9600GT to run the 2 monitors connected and a G210 which I would like to use to connect to my TV using the HDMI output. At the moment I am using the VGA output from the G210 to the TV and a separate audio out from the computer which was working fine but the audio is now always muted on startup.

I don't think it is an issue with my mythtv settings as I cannot get any audio over the HDMI using speaker-test (on board analogue audio works ok).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No HDMI Audio With ATI HD 3300?

Apr 21, 2010

I've been googling and searching these forums and I can't find a fix. I just discovered that I have a headphone jack on the bottom of my monitor and it would be a lot more convenient to use that rather than the jack on my tower. However, when I switch to HDMI audio output I don't hear anything. I now it's not my cable because it works on my HDTV and throughput audio fine.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 with the Asus M4A78T-E mobo with integrated ATI HD 3300 graphics. I am running the official drivers from ATI, ATI Catalyst 10.3 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver, the latest and greatest, not the one from Synaptic. I know this is a bad time to be looking for a fix since 10.4 is out in 8 days but if anyone knows a quick fix that would be great.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HDMI Audio On HD4870 ?

Dec 3, 2010

I have an ECS A785GM-M and the integrated HD4200 HDMI audio was working out of the box on a clean Ubuntu 10.04 install. After the updates and all, everything still worked just fine for a month.

Then, I installed a HD4870 with ATI DVI to HDMI adapter and the sound is not working (it works flawlessly on Windows 7, so it is not the hardware). The creepy stuff is that on Pulseaudio GUI configuration, everything looks right: ATI 48x0 HDMI is selected as output and when some sound is playing the bar moves, although there is no sound coming from the TV speakers.

I tried editing /etc/pulse/default.pa as suggested on this link, but it didn't helped. I'm kind lost here, since it looks that there is nothing wrong and yet, it is not working.

Trouble is, now I'm getting no sound through the hdmi to the tv. When I try aplay -l I get info for sound card 0 (HDA Intel), but nothing is showing for soundcard 1e So it's not seeing the card, so I can't configure it.

Everything seems to work out of the box, except the HDMI sound. The HDMI video works OK, and also the normal sound using the onboard soundcard work OK. By my knowledge I think I have setup the audio properties correctly. Some screen-shots attached. What happens when I switch the output to HDMI is no audio signal on the TV. The HDMI works OK (both sound and video) on my Win7 64 bit install.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Realtek ATI HDMI Audio No Sound In 9.10?

Mar 19, 2010

I was running Ubuntu 9.04 and just upgraded to 9.10 recently. I see many others are having problems with their sound. I too do not have sound. I did get sound running briefly with an Alsa update, but it was muffled. In trying many other fixes, I again have no sound and can not resolve it. I am thinking of burning a new cd and doing a fresh install and starting over.

My lap top is an MSI GT725 US model with an HD4850 mobility graphics card. I dual boot between Vista 32 bit and Ubuntu.

Has anyone else had any luck getting the Realtek ATI sound working in 9.10?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Radeon X1200 HDMI Audio?

I want my computer to be used as a DVD/BD player, and as of recently it has rejected its windows install and refuses to reinstall. Ubuntu 9.10 installed without problem, but when I select the X1200 (hdmi) audio output via the top right icon no sound comes out. I've searched this topic and one theory was that if i ran ALSA mixer the x1200 audio might be muted by default; it was not muted. I've also been told to update my catalyst, but using synaptics packet manager to download the catalyst control center, when I run it I get the message no supported hardware found. Is there any way to get this to work, or am I stuck with my speakers/3.5mm jack?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: HDMI Audio Using VT1708s Chipset?

Jul 5, 2010

Ok, so let me first start off by saying I'm a linux noob. I feel no shame. I've been working on trying to solve my issue for a few days now and after much research I am still no better off. But I am able to at least narrow down my problem. The long and short of it is that my HDMI audio device is not showing up in Ubuntu 10.4 x64 edition. Let me give a few specs.

Motherboard: ASROCK 785GMH/128
Onboard video: ATI Radeon HD 4200
Onboard audio: VIA VT1708S
OS: Ubuntu 10.4 x64
Alsa drivers: alsa-driver-1.0.23
ATI Drivers: ATI Catalyst 10.6

Running the latest version of ALSA and ATI's proprietary linux drivers. I can see all outputs (including the s/pdif) except the HDMI. From my reading there should be a device listed on a 2nd card called ATI HDA HDMI aplay -l returns the following result:

Ubuntu :: Blank Screen Using Fglrx And An HDMI Audio

Sep 9, 2010

I have now for two days been battling against my computer. The problem I'm having is that I'm not able to use fglrx as it only gives me a black screen at the time when login screen should appear. I have tried installing from packages, and also building my own packages from the downloaded .run file from amd's website. I have tried reinstalling, reconfiguring, removing xserver-xorg-video-ati and so on, but the problem is basically the same even though sometimes it made the screen turn off instead of just black as it's now and have been for the most setups. I've tried running without xorg.conf and tried making one using aticonfig -initial , either ways the result is the same, blank and black screen.

I can confirm with dmesg | grep fglrx that the module is loaded (even now though I'm actually using radeon driver). The X log in /var/log is just an empty file, so no help there. Actually I started of with this yesterday but with a Debian/lenny installation, and had the same problem (the turning off screen variant). In Debian I couldn't even start X using any other driver (even though I maybe could now after I learned a bit more of how package tools work) so I installed Ubuntu instead. In Ubuntu everything loads but is using the radeon driver as default... Ubuntu though suggested on launch to upgrade to the propriety fglrx driver on launch, but that only made my screen to turn of on next launch...

The reason I really need/want to use fglrx is that I have my receiver connected through the HDMI cable and using it for sound. This works in Windows. As I understand I need to use the fglrx driver to do this in Linux, or do I ? Actually the HDMI out is shown in the mixer settings, but I don't get any sound through it... Guessing that I need to access some CCC settings that I cannot start when using radeon driver. Or should it be enough to get HDMI-out sound just having the fglrx loaded though not using it for graphics? How should I proceed with this situation? Trying to get fglrx to work or trying to get audio to work using radeon driver? And what can I try more? I have actually used both Linux and FreeBSD a bit in the good old days of the late-nineties (remember Slackware 96 ) but don't think I ever had this hard solved problem... My system is:

Ubuntu 10.(4? latest netinstall) x64
C2D E6600 on P5B-deluxe
4GB RAM
ATI HD4350 (1 hdmi, 1 dvi, 1 vga), monitor connected on DVI

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound Via HDMI But Not Via MB Audio Chip

Nov 6, 2010

Recently I installed Ubuntu 10.10 64bit and I have a problem with it.

I have a motherboard with internal audio card as well as I have ATI 2600 card. When I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 sound via motherboard worked perfectly.

But some time later it disappeared. Actually "Output device" that represents audio card disappeared. See screenshot of the Audio Settings dialog.

I made 2 thing - most likely that one of them cause this problem:
- I tried to setup Panasonic Plasma TV as a second monitor via HDMI output of my video card (ATI 2600).
- I added maven-backports repository (new kernel or new audio driver?)

Have anybody seen this problem? Are any pointers how to fix it? If you need any additional info - let me know I'll be glad to provide it.
