Jul 27, 2010

Im having an issue getting GDM to start.. i recently reformatted my server, and put 10.04 on there.. loving it so far.. well, the whole time i was testing it, i left a monitor hooked up the whole time..

So, this weekend, i rearranged the room its in, and hooked it back up, with no monitor.. I can still SSH, ftp, and use gnump3d.. i mean, basically anything that does not need X will run.. just cant get it to start..

this is the error i get when trying to start it via an ssh session

Ubuntu :: Gnome Don't Start - Only Console Does

I have a very strange trouble with gnome/X11/Adapter/memory, I really don't know! When I upgrade my memory to 2Gb (1Gb+1Gb), graphic mode not starting! Load only console, but gnome not load. And besides error message not showing. 'starx' command leads to black screen and nothing happends, keyboard doesn't work too. if I leave 1Gb memory, all working perfectly! tell me where I can find log-message or how I can solve that problem. In /var/log I can't found anything interesting.

Ubuntu :: Gdm Will Not Start Gnome Session?

Jul 31, 2010

I'm having issues logging into my system... After authenticating via GDM, the screen goes black with only the mouse showing and remains this way indefinitely. At first the hard disk is active to a similar degree as it was when logins were successful, but then the system (apart from being able to move the mouse) is unresponsive.

If left for long enough so that the screen goes into power-saving mode, moving the mouse brings up the unlock dialogue that you normally get if you set your computer to lock itself after a period of idleness.

I suspect some sort of file corruption, as I have not changed any settings recently. I have forced checks on all of my disks in the hope it would solve this problem. I have also tested logging in on a freshly created user account I created which gives the same result. Also, starting an xterm session from GDM works fine.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Desktop Won't Start

Jan 29, 2011

I've recently updated to Ubuntu 10.10. At first I had no problems, but after the third time I logged in, my desktop background appeared (and nothing else) but quickly flashed to a black screen with some error messages (too fast for me to see) and I got sent to the login screen. After trying some more times I got the same problem with some small differences(sometimes my desktop icons showed up, other times it took a couple of minutes before I got kicked out).

I tried running startx from the terminal but got one of these two error messages: Server already running or could not find any listening ports. If I run "sudo startx -- :1" to switch the port I login fine, but as the root user. Gnome works perfectly here and when I login in gnome-failsafe. This leads to believe it has something to do with my user configuration. I've restarted xorg server, installed gnome-main-menu and made sure if got the current gnome package.

Ubuntu Servers :: Cannot Start Gnome Gui

May 13, 2011

starting the gnome GUI.

Environment is Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS, server edition.

I have installed the ubuntu-desktop package with apt-get, which reported a successful installation. I also installed firefox the same way.

When I run the command "firefox", I get this response: "Error: no display specified". Thinking I might need to run it from the GUI, I tried "startx" (command I found elsewhere on this forum). Response was: "Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0".

Why run GUI and/or Firefox on a server? The second instruction on the Symfony 2.0 install procedure is to "check the configuration" by accessing http://localhost/Symfony/web/config.php.

I first tried that from my Win-7 workstation, substituting the server's IP address for localhost in the URL above. The response from that is "This script is only accessible from localhost."

SO ... I'm trying to run firefox directly on the server, so that I can access the localhost version of that URL, to follow Symfony's instructions.

how I can get FF (or any other browser) running on the server?

Ubuntu :: Gnome-Do Using 100% Processor Usage On Start Up

Feb 6, 2010

So I have 64bit Ubuntu 9.10 installed on my laptop and I noticed one day on boot that everything I did was running very slowly. Upon cracking open terminal and running top to see what was bogging the system I found that gnome-do was taking up 100% of my processor...

This happens around 50% of the time when I boot I've noticed. Killing the processor and restarting Gnome-Do makes the application behave as it should.

Ideas on why this might be? Just a bad 64bit version in the repos I'm guessing? Might try and compile a new version from source later today.

Ubuntu :: Gnome Slow To Start Since Upgrade

Since upgrading from Heron to Lynx (64 bit) Gnome is slow to start. It seems like it is waiting for some sort of automated timeout, since the harddrive stops in the middle of Gnome startup (after login) for around 10 secs or so. Is there a logfile of the startup-sequence somewhere that I could look at and/or post here?

Ubuntu :: Gnome Does Not Start Correctly After Update?

Dec 4, 2010

I recently got the last round of updates, including linux kernel 2.6.32.26. after several programs froze up (i hadn't restarted since the update) i restarted only to find that Gnome starts up into a different look than I had it setup to (normally with a custom theme and without a login prompt). it now starts with a more basic theme and a login prompt which won't accept my password. something similar had happened before and i fixed it by booting into recovery mode and running dpkg, and having to reboot more than once but it returned to normal. I tried running it again and it hasn't worked, so I must ask for advice. I am working from Fedora 10 on the same computer.

Ubuntu :: After Update Of 10.04 - Can't Start Gnome Desktop After Login

Jun 10, 2010

I use ubuntu 10.04 in VirtualBox (upgrated from 09.10), host os is Win7.

3-4 days ago update of ubuntu required restart of Ubuntu (linux kernel was updated).

After 3 days (i.e. yesterday) I restarted the system. I found that flashlib in Chrome became to work unstable, some artefact appeared, and only scrolling down-up in browser allowed to update view of screen. I run update manager. It showed ~88Mb of updates for last 3 days.

After download of updates, apply changes was failed! I faced this first time (!). I remember message like "can not synchronize file /usr/share/..." or something like that.

I restarted ubuntu again. Now I could not login. System hangs after login. No Gnome menu appears etc.

I tried to fix issue using dpkg. I found that some lib (ure) related to OpenOffice was not assigned (version XXX required, but bersion XXXY found). dpkg offered to solve this by some combination. I did so. Then I run dpkg update, and no errors appeared.

Also I updated VirtualBox to version 3.2.4, updated VirualBox Additions via console terminal in ubuntu.

But still I can't fix problem with gdm/gnome.

dpkg-reconfigure gnome-*** did not help for me.

I tried to check logs, but I have not found something "interesting".

At the moment terminal is the only way to login.

Ubuntu :: Gnome-panel Process Doesn't Start?

Jan 8, 2011

I forced a quick restart with 'sudo shutdown -f now' and when logged back in gnome-panel doesn't start at all. I can right-click on the desktop & run terminal from there, so I'm running web browser from terminal. I tried 'sudo killall gnome-panel' & got 'no process found' I tried doing a full restart, still the same.

I tried running gnome-panel from the terminal.

'gnome-panel' gives me my panel after a 4 or 5 second delay. If I exit the terminal or Ctrl-C I lose the panel again.

'sudo gnome-panel' gives me what appears to be the panel for the root user.

Ubuntu Installation :: Unity/Gnome Does Not Start After 10.10 To 11.04 Upgrade?

May 18, 2011

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. Most of the upgrade went well except for one package (mpd). Ubuntu rebooted and went into a sexy-ish minimal grub. I launched Ubuntu, everything went fine. The only thing I can't seem to get working is Unity/Gnome. When I log on with kdm and choose 'default' or Ubuntu Classic, everything loads fine except for the taskbar/whatever interface. (I usually run wmfs instead of kde/gnome and I'm not sure which interface is currently installed right now. I have both kubuntu-desktop and ubuntu. )

I can still, however, right click and see my desktop/desktop icons. The only thing that does not load is the gnome/unity interface itself. I need it to manage my fonts to fix my wmfs fonts that got screwed up. (I'm using a bitmap font and it doesn't work unless I activate whatever settings I have to activate. )

I am not home right now and this was written on a phone. I apologize if this whole post seems confusing/total blabber. edit: Ubuntu Classic works fine, but Ubuntu/Default does not automatically launc the Unity interface.

Fedora :: How Does GNOME Start PulseAudio

Nov 23, 2009

The upgrade from 11->12 went very smoothly for me on multiple servers except for one seemingly small item that had me tearing my hair out for a few hours. Three of my machines are MythTV frontends, which rarely do anything else. As such, I have them fairly stripped down package-wise and run MythTV on GNOME with xorg-x11-xinit-session to kick it off via an .xsession script. This scheme has worked flawlessly for years across many versions of Fedora until last week when MythTV mysteriously would not start and the computer would just get stuck in an automatic login loop. I discovered that I could start MythTV after I logged into the GNOME desktop and through some testing and log inspection came to realize that it was PulseAudio that was not starting automatically. I also discovered that I could just SSH in while it was in this loop and issue 'pulseaudio -D' and the next automatic login attempt would start MythTV properly.

As a quick hack, I just tossed 'pulseaudio -D;sleep 3' into my .xsession script and it seems to be working for now. I am interested to know how it used to start up without logging into the desktop before the upgrade. Could this possibly be related to udev or dbus? I have practically no knowledge of those, but do see config files for both in the pulseaudio package.

OpenSUSE :: Gnome Terminal At Kde Start?

I installed gnome 3.0 through the one installer, and now every time I start kde I get a gnome terminal that says
Code:

** (orca:4321): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowState' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** (orca:4321): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowActions' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'
** (orca:4321): WARNING **: Trying to register gtype 'WnckWindowMoveResizeMask' as enum when in fact it is of type 'GFlags'

It keeps shrinking everytime I try to expand it a bit, I had to edit > select all and copy to be able to read it. And it sounds like it's trying to play a sound that sounds like welcome, but it gets cut off, it also makes a sound when closing it. I'm assuming this was supposed to be a first time run thing for gnome but it keeps showing up in kde.
