when i login in to gnome i have no sound. however i can hear the sounds form the login window and if I login as another user sound is OK.Update:I purged alsa with this command
I've got a custom compiled kernel, just built on Lucid 10.04 from the kernel sources.System works fine, except for sound. When I log in as normal user and try to play a wav file using. The sound file is being played, but I hear no sound. However, when I do "sudo -s" and become root, execute the same mplayer command then I can hear the sound. My Sound preferences shows no input device and only "Dummy Output" as output device. On the generic kernel as came with the Lucid 10.04 CD, sound preferences shows different devices. The strange thing is: when I compiled my custom kernel, I changed nothing to the sound options in the kernel config file.
Instead of doing pkill pulse, is there any way to redirect the sound output (Flash Player) from <browser user> to <current gnome user>, so I don't have to pkill the sound daemon of the current user ?
I have a network set up that has been working for around a year with no problems but has now developed a login problem. The system was set up with a main server with all users on it and another PC located elsewhere that people could log onto using there personal login and password that then gained access to the account on the main server. This remote PC has now got the problem. When you try to log onto an account it comes up with the message "your session has lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself this could mean there is a installation problem or that you are out of disk space."
Error message says that no profile for the user can be found and it couldnt create per-user gnome configuration directory. I can log on as root onto the remote PC as it is obviously a local account but all the account on the main server are not accessible. From the root account I can see that the connection to the server is OK and I can actually log into the accounts on the server using the failsafe session so the physical network is OK.
I never built or designed this set up and to be honest I normally work with windows so its all a bit strange to me. Both PC's run Centos 5. I have checked the messages log and there doesnt seem to be any indication of a problem. Just that it stopped connecting from the remote PC. The accounts are all active on the main server itself and have no problems being accessed.
I just upgraded to Lucid, but I believe we had the problem before in Karmic, sometimes the sound would just go away, and no matter how much I moved anything in preferences it would not come back, until the pc was restarted.
Now, in Lucid, I discovered something, whenever my wife or I watch video, be it VLC or through Firefox, the other user cannot listen to anything. This goes on until the pc is restarted, but whenever someone accesses first any app that requires sound the other user is screwed.
I checked the sound preferences, and in my case everything looks fine, the Hardware tab lists a device to configure, as "Internal Audio with 1 Output / 1 Input Analog Stereo Duplex". Thing is, my wife's sound preferences do not list anything in her Hardware tab, and I bet that whenever she can listen to anything this will show up, and mine will disappear. Even Rhythmbox is silent.
I've been using Ubuntu with GNOME for the past few years and I'm looking at possibly switching to the KDE-based Kubuntu. I know I can have both DE's on my system and even found a tutorial on the Psychocats site for setting it up, but I have a question for the KDE gurus here. Can I safely use the same user profile between both GNOME and KDE or should I set up a new user for working in KDE? I haven't seen anything saying I can't but I really don't want to hose my GNOME settings in case I end up not liking KDE enough to use it on a daily basis.
Any idea how to "repair" "the configuration server" ? I'm only a month into Ubuntu and I have this fatal inability to create a new user from the Gnome GUI. For any new user I create, I get the following fatal errors upon rebooting and trying to log in to that user.
- Purple clouds for about a minute. -- then -- - Could not update ICEauthority file /home/user_encrypted/.ICEauthority - There is a problem with the configuration server. - (/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exited with status 256) -- then -- - Nautilus could not create the following required folders: - /home/user_encrypted/Desktop, /home/user_encrypted/.nautilus
I was eager to try GNOME 3 in Ubuntu 11.04 (because I wasn't very satisfied with Unity, like almost everybody around) so I installed it using this guide:http://news.softpedia.com/news/How-t...4-194085.shtmlAfter rebooting the system (to finish the installation), I've got an error message while trying to login:Quote:Could not update ICEauthority file /home/<username>/.ICEauthorityI've googled for some time and found different 'solutions', however none of them seems to be working. What can be done with a system like this? I'm not able to login, how can I downgrade the system?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 with GNOME and KDE and again no sound. I simply logged in to GNOME and then to KDE.Is there any simple(!) way to fix sound problems under Ubuntu once and for all? Since more than one year I have sound issues. Tried all the solutions from the forums or wikis. This is really annoying...So, my idea is to use only one way (PulseAudio? Alsa?) to have sound, is that possible somehow?
I appear to be experiencing an annoying issue with my soundcard. As you can see from the images below, the soundcard is detected, but not when it comes to the "output". This is only affecting one user (my admin account is fine, as was a new user set up to test it).
I've looked at this page and have attempted reinstalling alsa, but to no success.
The results from aplay -l are:
Quote:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices **** card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: ALC883 Analog [ALC883 Analog] Subdevices: 1/1 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
[Code]....
"stevek" being the user that I'm having difficulty with. I suspect that I might need to recreate part of my user profile, but I'm not sure where start.
I have one Ubuntu 10.04 machine that is configured this way.I want GDM to prompt the user to enter their username via a text field, and then a password, instead of displaying a list of users to choose from. One way to configure GDM's appearance is to run the following from a terminal: gksudo -u gdm dbus-launch gnome-appearance-properties.If I remember correctly, there is a different dialog to run than "gnome-appearance- properties" that allows changing whether GDM prompts for a username or displays a list. But I do not know what it is.
I upgraded a machine with only default OEM user from 10.10 to 11.04 and my extremely useful gnome desktop was trashed by the upgrade. If I logout, the login screen does not give me a choice of login shells. What options do I have to ressurect a more useful shell than the default toy for untrained office staff and game players
I did a clean install for ubuntu 11.04. Having seen the power of Gnome 3 (with Fedora) I installed it right away. Some minor problem arose and I had to deinstall accessibility themes and install the "standard" gnome themes. However there is one more problem and I've added a screen shot to show the problem. As you can see, the gnome desktop seems pretty cool but however the tweak tool doesn't show properly (empathy and other apps neither).
Besides the fact that the themes don't properly show in this screen I also get the error "User Theme extension not enabled" now I get the feeling these problems are related, but how do I fix it? I've searched everywhere but as far as I know I seem to be the only one with this problem. I would love to take the full advantage of a Gnome 3 desktop but this is getting to be a big "bump" in the road.
Whenever my cursor is in the menu, Applications, Places, System etc.... I can not adjust the sound via the laptop buttons.I've had this problem for ages, but was wondering if anyone else had experienced this.
I have a problem concerning about NIS. I have set-up a NIS client, but I am not able to login as NIS-user by using GNOME or KDE login GUI. However, I was able to login as NIS-user by using a terminal that's open from a local account or root. Also the NFS seems working as well. This problem only occur on my new FC13 pc, and I don't have this problem on my FC10 pc. Both of my FC13 and FC10 PC have the same NFS and NIS setting.
When I select "Ubuntu desktop" from gdm, I get a blank screen (with wallpaper) and no evident functionality. The mouse pointer is present, but I have no panel or desktop menus. The file .xsession-errors contains the following:
Code: /etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup... No default user directories
I have gnome-shell installed on Ubuntu 11.04, and installed gnome-tweak. When I open it and try to change the theme, however, it says the user-theme extension is not enabled. How to I fix this?
I got a problem with gnome-subtitles when I try to sync an srt file with an mkv file: no sound available, whereas in the case of an avi file no problem of course. Did you experiment the same problem and find a workaround?
I'm running a VM (headless), and sound only works when I am logged into a gnome session. Sound (from any application, including VLC running in a terminal) is stopped when I switch user. How do I prevent this from happening?
I'm having issues with soundI cannot view my sound card in Gnome Alsa. It is not muted. It does work I tried to remove myself from the audio group but it won't allow me to i am sudo what might be going wrong when i click the buttons they do nothing in users and groups menu
I cannot find a post that matches this scenario...the id created during the install (from CD) of Karmic has fully usable sound. However, users created from the Users and Groups app do not.
I have made sure that all users are defined to the audio, pulse, pulse-audio, and pulse-rt groups. No luck.
I have followed every step I have read having to do with the alsamixer. No luck.
I have verified that alsa and linux itself are at the latest versions.
My problem started when I updated Ubuntu 10.10 developer release (or whatever it's called ) to Ubuntu 10.10 Final. When I switch user or lock the screen and log back in, my computer makes no sound. I know it's not muted since I can see that in the volume control. The only way I can fix it is by restarting my computer
I have a pc where I run ubuntu 10.10 and on this pc i have installed vlc and on boot i start the vlc http interface. Therefor I created the file /etc/init.d/vlc. The file seems like this:
[URL]
and I also updated rc.d. Vlc starts on boot as desired I also can send commands like in_play the file (a playlist) is loaded and reguarding the status.xml the file is played. But when no user is logged in I hear no sound. When I perform a login on the machine there is first still no sound but when I send e.g. the pl_next command or call in_play again then there is sound. Sadly the pc shouldn't be attached to a monitor and therefor I can't perform a login everytime so I need sound, when noone is logged in. Why is there no sound?
I have a user account on my laptop which does not display the sound-service icon in my notification area applet (Ubuntu 11.04). If I try to start /usr/lib/indicator-sound/indicator-sound-service manually, I get the following error: Code: libindicator-WARNING **: No watchers, service timing out. ** (process:5612): DEBUG: Service shutdown !
In the many months I've had this account on this box, and as a result of the many minor mods I've made to the account, I've somehow bollixed something in the account setup which interferes with the startup of the service. I created a new account on the system, and the sound service icon displays properly, so I know it's not a system problem. Both the new, bare account and my personal account are in the audio group. As a work-around, I have an icon for gnome-volume-control on my top panel, which works pretty well.
I have recently installed Opensuse 11.4 on my desktop. And also upgraded my gnome-2 to gnome-3. Its works nice and I am enjoying it. Only the biggest problem I am facing is, if I lock the screen and leave my desk for couple of hours then user gets logged out automatically. Which is resulting all the documents and applications gets closed. I am unable to work in my desktop now.
