General :: Specify Top's Screen Width In Batch Mode?

I am logging the output of: top -b -n1 -c so I can keep track of which processes are using how much memory and CPU each minute. When top shows the full command line (-c), the command line text gets truncated at the edge of the screen. This is perfect when running and displaying in a terminal. However, I am sending STDOUT to a file for parsing later and want the full command name logged. Is there a way I can tell top to use a specific screen width? (I know it maxes at 512, that would be fine)
Is there a better way to achieve a similar goal: get periodic stats about which processes are running and how many resources they are consuming?

I am attempting to set up an automatic transfer via sftp using public key authentication. I have created a public/private key pair to connect to the remote server without using a password. What If I wanted to scan a string like the following...

Anyhow just one giant string that's longer than my screen's width. If I simply copy and paste that string after a grep command, it seems that the terminal inserts newlines at the terminal's width and therefore not the whole string goes in. Even if I insert a quote before the beginning of the string and then paste it in, terminal still reads in a newlines somehow and obviously says command not found, etc.

A couple of days I started using latex and have still one question about the table width. My table is too wide for a page. How can I adjust it so that it fits on the full width of a page? Can I use a command or do I have to specify each column widths by hand?

I use ioctl to get the cosole window size (the SSH window).
I use the following code:
When I debug on linux pc, it gives me the correct window width. But after I try it on router (this is my enventual place where my code shall run), ioctl always give me 0 width, that is, numberOfColumnsOfTerminalWindow == 0. but the returnValue is 0 which means that the function call succeeds.

I need to close images I work with when I'm done with them. I have few thousands of icons from my OS/2 PC and I would like to convert them to format acceptable by LINUX GUI (*.png, *.xpm).I attempted to open an OS/2 *.ico files with few LINUx graphical apps (GIMP,Fspot, gThumb,Gwenview,Kolourpaint,Okular) but none can understand the format. It's somewhat problematic for me
to convert under OS/2 now so I'm looking for a LINUX app.Are there any LINUX apps that can convert OS/2 *.ico files to a LINUX format in BATCH MODE? If it requires manually "open then save-as", I can't repeat it few thousands of times.

I want a simple short gimp batch script that will take one image, paste it into a predetermined layer on another image, export as png and discard changes. Unfortunately, I can't find any tutorials on using gimp batch. Anyone know any such tutorials (Or better yet, what my script needs to be)
So far this is what I have. I need a way to loop through the layers to check the name of them, I also need a way to ditch the previously opened files from memory (Otherwise gimp still has both images in memory) (I'm going to mark this solved so I can make a cleaner post once I get it together)

In 10.4 I had set my default terminal size to my screen width - I type some long commands. After running an update this morning, my terminal comes up in the install default size. Using the preferences dialog, I cannot find the control to set the default width. Has it been removed? I hope I'm looking in the wrong place, but I have a chilling feeling that it's been dropped or perhaps just accidentally commented out.

I understand SOME of how to use screen; attaching and detaching screens, etc.
for example:
screen -d -m links cnn.com
Then I can type
screen -ls
or
screen -r
and re-attach to that session.
But what launching a batch file? Said batch file contains 2 commands; a CD command, and a command to launch Python to run a certain Python script.
Whenever I use the batch file as the command for Screen, it always exits and terminates the screen session -- there are always "0 sockets". Even though the Python script in question is very persistent, and runs indefinitely.

I was running kpdf and clicked Full Screen from within the kpdf window, I think in the View menu. Now I don't know how to regain control of the screen. I mean the menu bar is no longer present. Each time I run it, it is in full screen mode. I pressed F1 and read the section on the View menu. But it doesn't say anything about full screen.

While seeing any text file in vi mode, yellow patches are appearing on my screen in all spaces. Same are not appearing in cat mode. This is very clumsy to understand the text. How to remove those yellow patches. It seems earlier I have used a command to remove empty lines in between text file and this problem is occurring since then.

I just installed Opensuse 11.4 (gnome) in a new desktop but the screen resolution is 1360x768 60hz and this is not listed in monitor settings, so the monitor keeps displaying "not optimized mode" message. In order to use the correct resolution, I used these two commands:xrandr --newmode "1360x768_60.00" 84.75 1360 1432 1568 1776 768 771 781 798 -hsync +vsyncxrandr --addmode VGA1 "1360x768_60.00"it worked, but every time the computer is restarted, I must run this command again. So I think "I just have to create a script in the initialization!". It works, every time the computer is started, there is no need to run the commands again. But when program enters in full screen, the resolution is "lost" and the monitor message is displayed again.

I am running a SLC 5.2 with a Gnome 2.16 desktop setup for all the class room terminals. Where can I determine the status of the screensaver. The value could then be periodicaly tested within a "cron" script. If screen saver was running then a "skill" could then be called to force a complete logout releasing the terminal for another student.

I have installed the most basic Arch Linux only with command line interface as guest OS on Windows using VMware. The problem is when I maximize the Vmware window, the Arch Linux console does not adjust to the full screen. How to do this without installing X window?

I have a mixed set of images, each one having a slightly different resolution with a slightly different aspect ratio from the other images.I have tried using commands like:convert -resizeand:convert -cropHowever I can't seem to figure out the correct command to make all images have a width of 1024 and an aspect ratio of 6x4, without causing the image to stretch or get squashed.

I'd like to widen the width of the standard vertical scrollbar in firefox 3.6 or above. I know now that it is not an edit in about:config and appears that you have to edit in user.js, prefs.js, or in the Profile folder but I 3 prefs.js in my profile folder -

Secondly, I cannot find the user.js file. its location if it is still a viable file to edit. which (or what) prefs file I should concentrate on for this edit.
Plainly, it shouldn't be this tough to adjust the vertical scrollbar width, in a perfect world it would be adjustable though Windows. Anyway, this old fart's having difficulty grabbing that scrollbar.

Way back from Windows 3.x days to the latest 64bit Windows 7 (classic/standard theme)there is a way to make the window edge border wider then 1 pixel.I often use 3 to 5 pixel to make it easy to grab on hi-resolutions displays and hi DPI monitors.There doesn't seem to be an easy or obvious way to do this with the Gnome X-Windowing system?

I run a script which generated about 10k files in a directory. I just discovered that there is a bug in the script which causes some filenames to have a carriage return (presumably a '' character).
I want to run a sed command to remove the carriage return from the filenames.
Anyone knows which params to pass to sed to clean up the filenames in the manner described?
I am running on Linux (Ubuntu)
The character causing the filename to 'break up' accross multiple lines appear to be a CR (carriage return) instead of ' '. The filename is being diaplayed in thetitle of a text editor with %0D in the positions of where the file name breaks up. So I need to remove the CR chars from my filenames.

I'm looking to, all in the course of one batch file:
ssh into a remote computer execute commands (per the batch file) on the remote host.
What options do I need to add to the ssh invocation so that the batch file executes the lines following the ssh invocation over the connection?
e.g., with sftp it's simply adding a -b /dev/stdin and then << EOF at the end; how do I do this with SSH?
