I have an HP mini 210-1000 running ubuntu 10.04 and windows 7 dual boot. I plugged a cable in but wont get internet access. Do I need any prior configurations before my system can join the network? No problems with that in windows.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm running Natty and trying to troubleshoot my ethernet problem. An old laptop worked fine (including the ethernet) until a few days ago when we had a lightning strike relatively nearby. It appears power went out briefly or there was a spike (all hardware, except the DSL modem/NIC, had surge protection). The machine works fine now... except the network. I've run lshw -c network and it's showing "network: UNCLAIMED". ifconfig shows only the loopback and no eth0 at all. I've tried: ifup/ifdown, rebooting, live booting Natty off a USB drive, and tried on a network I know works... all to no avail. One interesting bit of info is that I can see a MAC address when I view the 'network connections' via the applet in top panel.
Am I reasonable to conclude the ethernet port got fried by the lightning? Any pearl of wisdom is welcome.
when i'm connected with wired (eth0) to my access point vpn connection connect flawless but when connect with wireless (eth2) to the same access point vpn connection failed i don't know whats the deal. i try disable eth0 (ifconfig eth0 down). it's disabled now but vpn connection still didn't work
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have installed Ubuntu 9.10 twice on two different laptops that had wireless cards that weren't working until I sudo apt-get update(d) them. After that, the wireless cards seem to miraculously work. But I was able to download them because they had working ethernet cards.
I'm working on a new laptop (Dell Inspiron 1150). I installed Ubuntu 9.10 like normal but I could not get a wired connection. I plugged in directly to my modem and it still cannot connect at all. It says that Auto eth0 is available, but it tries to connect but can't seems to make it. I downgraded to 9.04 to see if there was any changes, and there aren't. The same problem persists.
What's my next step to troubleshoot?

I just got an iPhone 4 and cannot get wired usb tethering to work. I had the same problem with my old phone, but I was able to wifi tether it without jailbreaking and don't want to have to jailbreak to tether (I don't mind if it is connected via cable, in fact I prefer it).
In both cases, though gnome network manager connects to the phone, and though the phone shows a current tethering connection, the ubuntu system (10.04 Lucid) is not able to load any web pages, despite showing a wired connection, and despite the fact that connection information on this wired connection seems complete (even with an ip address from the iphone and as it did with my old phone). It seems as if there is likely some simple setting that prevents me from using a usb source, though that is a guess.

I recently installed ubuntu 11.04 after trying 10.10 for a while and never had to deal with wireless seeing as I always had it hooked up. but Now I am running it on my new laptop which has a Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter, and I am truly stumped on how to get linux to recognize it. Do I have to install a driver?.. plus, my laptop has the on/off toggle switch assigned to an 'fn' key, so it easily toggles on/off in Windows, but not in ubuntu.

If I login to a windows 7 instance on this dual boot laptop then the ehternet works just fine. So it's not a hardware, cable or router issue. The card even gets an ip, but I can't connect to the internet.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have recently bought a new laptop for this purpose. It is a Toshiba L555D-103. It was pre installed with Windows 7 (64 bit). I have now installed Ubuntu 9.10 (32 bit). It works perfectly when wired. But it does not when I try it wireless. It did work wirelessly with Windows 7, and I have many more both stationary and laptops working through the router, so I do not think the router is the problem.I am guessing that there are no drivers for the wireless to function, but I am not sure. I am guessing that there are no drivers for the Ethernet card ?

We finally got internet in our apartment in China, but my husband was the only one home when the guy came to set it up (on his windows machine).
He connects by plugging in, then clicking a desktop icon labeled "Broadband Connection" where a box pops up with a username, a password box, and some buttons, one of which says "connect".
I am trying to figure out how to set this up on my netbook so that I can use the internet at home too. I have a feeling that even if I had been home when the setup guy came, he wouldn't have had a clue what to do with mine anyway.
On the WinXP machine: Connection Properties state that this is a PPPoE connection, with TCP/IP, QoS, and Deterministic Network Enhancer all checked. Under the security tab, unsecured passwords are allowed.
I installed Ubuntu10.04, It cannot driver Wired network and wireless. Later I installed linuxMint9, wireless is ok, but wired network doesn't work. I am sure the lan cable is ok. It works in Windows.

When she plugs in the wired connection a problem occurs, it seems that every SSL Site and/or encrypted Website cannot be shown on her Notebook, for example shopping at Amazon.com. The Problem does not persist the whole time, sometimes it works for a few seconds and you are able to fill your cart.
Other Informations: The Connection has been tested with Windows 7 and with Ubuntu (USB-Live-Stick Lucid)... no difference.
Is it possible that her Hardware is not running correctly? What should we do next?
Tomorrow we want to reset the computer to factory default status.

I have a HP Mini running Ubuntu Desktop 10.04, and I cannot get a wired connection to work. My network card is "Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)", and I have the restricted drivers for the card installed. Wireless works fine, though.

I recently tried out OpenDNS on my wired connection, however after it was slower than faster, I tried going back to the original settings that the connection had (so basically to Automatic DHCP).
For some reason the connection wouldn't connect again. So I thought I'd try deleting that connection and creating a new one, but this still doesn't work. When I try to connect using NetworkManager it just does the 'loading' icon for 30ish seconds then says disconnected.
My wireless still works fine however.
I'd very grateful as i'm worried i've messed up the ethernet port and I need it for when I got University in a couple of weeks
what is the command to restart the network services? ive forgotten i think it uses -hup switch though. about 1 in 20 boots on my desktop ubuntu system results in the system insisting its no longer on a network yet has a fully functioning network card. a reboot always fixes the issue but that doesnt seem like a long term solution to me. If I ping a neighbouring system I get nothing. (sent packet count increases in ifconfig) If I ping from a neighbouring system back to my desktop I get nothing (no change in packet count) I can bring down and back up the network interface with no results. A sniffer shows the system definitely isnt sending anything out Everything worked previous boot and will work again after a reboot.

In Network Connections there is no Auto eth0 listing and when I create a wired connection, as soon as I enter details, the 'Apply' button grays out! Am I missing some permissions?

These days I wanted to connect to the internet on my laptop using a wired connection. When I inserted the ethernet cable, I was surprised to see that it doesn't work on Ubuntu 11.04. So I decided to boot into Windows and see if it works or not. And I found that it works without problems on Windows.

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy desktop PC has 2 NICs. I have Ubuntu on it since several years, and I remember that both eth0 and eth1 used to work. However, I discovered recently that currently only eth0 works, and eth1 is dead, but I don't know why. It's been a while since I've tried eth1, so I have no idea when exactly it broke. I suspect the problem may be related to the fact that the MAC address is incorrect: it is set to 00:00:00:00:00:00, which seems wrong. But I have no idea how this happened...Any idea what might be wrong and how I can fix it? Here is some output which I think is useful:

today i installed ubuntu 10.10 on my hp mini 210 netbook. previously i had ubuntu netbook remix running and had no problem accessing the internet both wired and wireless; however, since installing 10.10 i have been searching for a solution for the last six hours but have been unable to get either to work.
as far as hardware is concerned i have a broadband bcm4313 802.11 network controller and am running through a linksys router which i know to be working because i have 4 other computers connected to it all with internet access. i checked ifconfig and a lo conection was listed but no eth0. i also tried downloading a broadband tar.gz driver but dont have any packages to build it and cant get any since the computer has no internet. i assume wired is easiest to setup so lets start there even though i use wireless 90% of the time. im new to linux so please dont expect me to know any terminal commands.
I have just setup Ubuntu on my Dell Laptop a Lattitude C640 with a 3Com 3c905C Tornado Wifi Card. Well the wired and wireless do not work. They try to connect then bang no connection. I would be able to make some headway I think but I have no basic skills with Ubuntu. I have mastered how to get info from the terminal but how the heck to you edit a file? View 4 Replies View RelatedI cant get my wired internet connection to work. The command 'dpkg -s pppoeconf' returns ' installed ok installed'. My connection is through a router which is probably in a semi-bridge mode and I need to dial a connection to get the net started. The connection Auto eth0 is setup properly with the correct cloned MAC Address (that of my laptop).
I've also executed 'sudo pppoeconf' and ran the whole series of steps which towards the end said that my connection will be set on boot. However, the net doesnt work directly and I dont know how to dial manually either. 'sudo ifup eth0' returns 'interface eth0 already configured'. I tried some 10-15 threads but none worked. Ubuntu is handicapped without internet.
I have installed Ubuntu 11.04 using Wubi through Windows 7. It seems to be working but it will not connect to my wired internet connection. It tells me there is no wired connection, when there is. I used sysinfo and its not showing any network adapter or controller. I have a board with nvidia nforce go 430, could it be a driver issue. It works fine in windows though. Tried using a wireless adapter and all is working. But why doesn't the wired ethernet connection work.
