General :: Error - Unknown Filesystem - Grub Rescue

Jan 9, 2010

I have dual boot with Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7. Today, after using Partition Wizard on Windows to resize its partition, I got the following message when reboot:

Code:

I dont actually know what to do, I've been reading some threads on the internet but nothing equal to my case, only people who installed Windows after Linux and lost GRUB. Do I just need a live CD to reinstall GRUB? Can somebody tell what to do?

General :: Error On Startup - Unknown File Filesystem Grub Rescue> ?

Mar 7, 2011

Yesterday I installed the latest version of ubuntu to my computer that was already running windows 7. I had everything working fine until in windows I deleted a partition that had nothing in it.

After this I restarted but I can't get into either OS. I get an error that says Error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>

I think I need to fix something in grub. I have been booting off of a usb stick with linux on it in the mean time.

General :: Error - Unknown Filesystem, Grub Rescue > - Computer Just Freezes

Jun 2, 2011

If I could I would change the boot order but I can't do that (I have a Dell Studio 1747). I try F2 to enter the BIOS set up, but I still end up with that error and never get to the setup. F12 doesn't work either (F12 is for the boot order) so I can't boot from the DVD with the Win7 installation DVD as the computer just freezes and I can't get past the Dell splash screen.

I have tried to remove the coin battery on the motherboard in an attempt to reset the BIOS but that didn't work either.

So...

F2 = error
F12 = freeze
Reset bios by removing coin size battery = no change

I assume there is no use reformatting the HD by attaching it to another computer and re-install Win7. Is it a motherboard problem?

General :: Unknown Filesystem, Grub Rescue Mode. Win7, Then Ubuntu Were Installed?

Sep 24, 2010

A few days ago I decided to try a linux OS for the first time. Following a how-to advice, I created a ~80gb partition (on a 320 gb sata disk) for Win7 and installed it. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04, chose to make partitions manually, created a primary ext4-partition (right after the one with Win7) for / and a 1024mb swap partition. So now the disk is parted this way: 512 booter - Win7 system, ~ 80gb ntfs - Ubuntu /, 8 gb ext4 - Ubuntu 1 gb swap - file storage, ntfs ~240 gb (created using Win7 bootable disk, but the issue from below started before this).

After the installation the boot loader failed to load any system, giving the error from the topic title. I tried several ways to reinstall/repair/reconfigure grub in the live-CD mode. Some of them didn't change anything, others were not completed because of an update-grub error ("cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)"). Grub version is 1.98b. The disk with Win7 and Ubuntu is treated as hd0 in grub and sdd in Ubuntu
ote: even though the thread is marked as SOLVED, the issue is actually not. I have managed to dual-boot Win7 and Ubuntu, but with partition configuration changes

General :: Error - Unknown Filesystem. Grub Rescue> - No Longer Have The Install Disk For Windows Vista

May 11, 2011

error: unknown filesystem grub rescue>

Background: My mother's HP laptop had Ubuntu and Vista on it, Ubuntu my brother's doing. He decided he wanted to take off Ubuntu yesterday (he had forgotten the password), and deleted the partition that it was contained within. The computer now boots to this error.

Inventory: We no longer have the install disk for Windows Vista, he cannot tell me what version he used of Ubuntu, what partition it was on, any of the specs for the machine, or generally any information about the system. All I am aware of is that error on the boot-up screen. I have nothing else to work with.

I would like to remove Grub, and Ubuntu, and leave Windows intact (the request of the owner of the computer), but I have no idea what commands I could use to get rid of either when I can't access Windows, or how to properly remove them if I did access Windows.

Ubuntu :: Error Unknown Filesystem Grub Rescue

Nov 17, 2010

I had dual boot with windows 7 and ubuntu 10.04 running, and working. In my grub menu on startup I could choose (among things) something called Vista loader. Dont know why, since I installed windows 7 and not vista. Could also choose windows7 and ubuntu, both worked.

Today I accidentally pressed the vista loader, and now I get the following error upon boot: Error unknown filesystem grub rescue

So the next thing I did was download the latest ubuntu and boot from live cd. I followed instructions [url] on how to purge grub2 and reinstall it, and did so with out any problems. However the same error remains when I boot.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 - Grub Rescue (Unknown Filesystem Error)

I just recently decided to install Ubuntu alongside windows 7 64bit. I was working fine until I decided to increase the partition size of the unused space to take up some space of an unused partition I had made earlier. When I tried to reboot windows I got the error -
error: unknown fileystem.

I have tried a windows repair disc with no results, it cannot find any problem with the startup routine and I have looked at many different tutorials and information about how to restore grub using command from the grub rescue menu. Ubuntu 10.10

Ubuntu :: Ext4 Partition's Filesystem Is Unkown?

Oct 5, 2010

I have recently updated my ubuntu 9.10 install to 10.04. And with that I've tried to install snow leopard on my computer so i can dual boot between them.the install was successful, but grub2 (that worked fine) wouldn't see the OS X install on its own partition. so i tried reinstalling it, like you do after you install windows and it would remove grub as the bootloader. That didn't work and i got a lot of messages that it wouldnt work because my partitioning (or something like that) is GPT. by the end of it i didn't have grub installed at all!so i started playing around with GParted, and while doing that i also put a bios_grub flag on my main ubuntu install partition, thinking that it would force grub to load from that partition. But that just gave me the GRUB Rescue prompt when trying to boot.

So i unchecked the bios_grub flag. and now it doesn't boot to anywhere and when inserting the ubuntu live cd i cant even see the ubuntu ext4 partition and mount it.Gparted says that its a partition that its File System is undetectable and unknown. Is there any solution that will allow me just to mount that partition and copy files from it? (unfortunatelly my backups are a little older than i would like them to be)Heres what boot info script gives me: (the partition that i need is sda1)

Ubuntu :: Rebooted By Ctrl-alt-delete - Error - Unknown Filesystem Grub Rescue

Oct 28, 2010

I've recently installed Ubuntu 10.10--it had Windows 7 on the machine before but wiped that off so it is not dual boot.

The upgrade manager prompted me to install about 170MB or so of upgrades. I chose to install everything and then rebooted. Upon rebooting I received an error (sorry but didn't record it).

I rebooted by ctrl-alt-delete and then got the error: error: unknown filesystem grub rescue.

How do I get back my installation?

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub Rescue Prompts After Formatting / "error: Unknown Filesystem"?

Sep 1, 2011

I had Ubuntu and Kubuntu installed to dual-boot using the GRUB loader installed by Kubuntu. I mistakenly formatted the Kununtu partition to NTFS in an attempt to install Windows XP in its place without updating grub to pull the files from my Ubuntu partition.

Now, when I go to boot the computer, I receive a the "error: unknown filesystem" and the grub rescue prompts for commands. I've attempted to boot from both a Ubuntu Live CD and a Secured Ubuntu CD with boot repair built into it, but receive the same message both times. I know this isn't an issue with my boot order (I've changed that), and my computer will boot into a Windows XP setup disc (which will not proceed for a different reason)

just tried downloading the latest version of ubuntu and install it on my laptop got an error message at the end of the installation (an I/O error, dev sr0,sector something) now when booting i got grub rescue. the only command working are ls and set. commands such as 'linux' or 'boot' show 'unkown command'

typing
ls (hd0,1) or ls /boot/

unknown filesystem

I tried to reinstall grub using the 3 different methods as in [URL] got no error message while doing so except when typing sudo grub-install --recheck /dev/sda it told me something about being unable to locate ubuntu or something along those lines - sorry i thought i'd remember .. running out of option is there a possibility to download the latest pre 10.04 stable version?

General :: Fixing Grub From Rescue Mode

I got my wife to try Linux, so we set her machine up to dual boot with Windows. After a few weeks, she decided not to use Linux, so we deleted the Linux partitions using Gparted on a USB drive and resized the NTFS partition, under the apparently mistaken impression that Grub would detect that there was now no other operating system. When we rebooted, we got error: no such partition, followed by a grub rescue prompt. I've never worked with Grub directly before, so I have no idea what to do at this point.

General :: Win7 And Ubuntu 10.1 Installed - Grub Rescue

Dec 13, 2010

I had Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.1 installed in my intel i3 4gig DDR Sony Vaio E-series laptop. Both operating system were working fine. Only problem that I used to have was the sound didn't use to play when I boot through Ubuntu. Due to that, I formatted the corresponding drive from Windows in which there was Ubuntu installed. I used "diskmgmt.msc" to delete the partition and then format it. The format was successful and when I restarted my computer, this error was displayed:-

error: unknown filesystem
grub rescue >

Windows didn't load at all. I used to have multiple boot grub menu previously before formatting the partition but that didn't show up after formatting.I am unable to use any of the Operating System.
