Ubuntu :: GRUB 2 Won't Listen To New Settings?

Jul 29, 2011

So I installed ubuntu 11.04 x32 (using unetbootin-win-549) next to Win7. Grub installed correctly, it added the win7 boot-loader to the list. All I wanted to change was the default selection, from Ubuntu latest kernel to Win 7. I first tried StartUp-Manager but the settings didn't take effect (default was still ubuntu and timeout was still 10, not 5 as I selected). Then I went to manually changing the etc/default/grub with gedit only to find that the new settings where already written there. So I just ran update-grub and tried again. Still nothing.

My 3rd try has been with Grub Costumizer. Still nothing.the changes were there, I tried changing them a little but after reboot, Grub still had default settings. So my question is what am I doing wrong?

I am currently using a workaround by reinstalling win7 bootloader and adding grub to the list using easybcd. Which is good because win7 is the main os (for now) and it cuts a few seconds by bypassing grub. But I would still like to know what I missed. I've been reading through the "grub 2 basics" guide but I still can't see what I'm doing wrong.

SOLVED: I did two things today, 1. I reedited /etc/default/grub with "gksu gedit" (I've seen others use it, I have no idea what it does) it is probably not this what solved it anyway. The second is that I ran "update-grub" with sudo (doh), yesterday I forgot to put sudo but it didn't give me any errors, it looked like it updated with no problems (even "/boot/grub/grub.cfg" looked updated).

I'm using OpenSuse 11.2 64 bits When I try to listen to music in Grooveshark Grooveshark - Listen to Free Music Online - Internet Radio - Free MP3 Streaming I can listen fine, and it seems to work ok, when suddenly the sound of the website stops to work, my processor gets overload and I've to reopen the site to continue to listen. Ubuntu Installation :: Install W/o Changing Grub Settings?

May 13, 2010

Is there a way to do an install from the iso image to a new disk (USB or whatever), without changing the grub settings on the systems existing hard drive? Every time I try to do a full install to a USB stick, it hoses grub on my hard disk, even though I specify the partitioning during the install, and leave /dev/sda untouched. This has happened now with both Karmic and Lucid.

Ubuntu :: Grub2 Settings Not Retained - Reinstall Grub?

Aug 14, 2010

This is closely related to a recent thread of mine that I unfortunately marked as solved prematurely. I'll try to keep it brief this time. After editing partitions I was left with a boot problem, namely "error: no such partition" and I am dropped at the 'grub rescue>' prompt. I can issue the appropriate grub commands and successfully boot the current kernel. Once booted, I executed 'sudo update-grub' and then /boot/grub/grub.cfg was rewritten with all drive and partition references correct. Likewise, /etc/fstab is also correct.

The problem comes when I attempt to reboot. I still get the 'no such partition' message and the 'set' command reveals that grub is still trying to reference the old partition. I've never encountered this problem before under similar circumstances. I'm guessing that this info must be stored in the disk's MBR as well as in grub.cfg because that file looks completely correct. Am I going to have to reinstall grub now?

Ubuntu Installation :: Save The Default Grub Boot Settings?

Jun 27, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu Server 10.04. When I reboot, it stops at a "grub>" prompt. I figured out that I can continue booting by entering these four commants:

set root=(hd0,1)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-21-generic-pae root=/dev/sda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.32-21-generic-pae
boot

I can't figure out, however, how to save these as the default so that the machine can boot without someone present to enter these commands. Running "grub-set-default" tells me "entry not specified." I don't see anywhere in /etc/default/grub that looks relevant.

How do I save my default grub settings?

Debian :: Grub Settings Revert After System Update

May 18, 2010

I used the Debian Lenny (main, not testing) update manager yesterday to install some new updates. Took a few minutes and no problems but today I started up and for some reason my system wouldn`t load. The hard drive installer automatically sets hd1,0 as my Debian system when it`s 0,0. I had changed this but upon updating yesterday the system again has grub using the previous setting.

Is there any logical reason why a system update (not upgrade, just small update via update manager using only main files not testing or volatile nor backports) could or would change my grub settings back to the wrong ones? I haven`t installed anything else, the only change has been the standard system update so it can only be that which caused it, but why?

I have entered the command gksudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst into terminal, and the menu.lst file does open. However, this file appears to be completely blank, which does not seem to make sense and is preventing me from changing the boot order.

OpenSUSE Install :: GRUB Settings During 11.3 Install Not Honoured?

Nov 26, 2010

I recently installed 11.3 from the network install CD and I wanted to configure GRUB to have a boot password. I went into the necessary options and enabled the password and saved. I went back in to confirm it stuck, and the password option was unchecked and the password was blanked.I re-entered the information and just carried on. The installation summary didn't mention any password being applied to GRUB, but I just kept on going. Sure enough, there is no password on boot with GRUB now.I tried this over multiple installs in the past couple days, as well as with the 11.2 network install CD, and on no install was the password option honoured

Ubuntu :: X Windows - How To Listen On TCP Port

Feb 6, 2011

It appears that X Windows under Ubuntu (or Gnome?) is started to listen to a Unix named socket, instead of a TCP port number, for client connections. That's what SSH is forwarding when it does X forwarding. I need to start X applications on a remote machine, and then close the SSH connection. So I need to make the connections directly. This is within a LAN on private IPs, so security is not an issue. I searched on help.ubuntu, but there appears to be no particular document that covers this. Anyone know where this is configured to enable it to listen on a TCP port like the usual 6000?

Ubuntu :: Change File Permission Settings To Force All Documents To Inherit Parent Document Settings?

Aug 21, 2011

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:

1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

Ubuntu :: Listen To Music Via Virtual Terminal?

May 27, 2010

I imagine I'll have to install something, but Google has shed no light for me thus far. And just to clarify, when I say virtual terminal I mean the terminals accessed by CTRL+ALT+(F1-F6). I'm going to be doing a challenge/learning experience where I don't allow myself a graphical interface for a month. way around BASH through adaption. However, if I have to go a month without music I will go insane.

So, even if this is possible can I listen to music from the internet (....., playlist.com, etc.) or just music on my hard drive? And I'm not sure if this thread belongs in Desktop Environments or not, that section seemed to focus on graphical interface.
