every time i start up a game like armagetron advanced or blobby volley 2 in full screen it freezes my computer. ill launch the game, and when i do the screen goes black for a moment like its going to full screen but then shows a zoomed up view of the top left of desktop. and thats it, its frozen. i have to restart.

I have recently switched to Debian and got everything working great except for one thing..When I want to kill some time by playing a game (in wine or native) in fullscreen it works fine except for a big number I get in the left corner of my screen that won't go away until I close the game and open the ATI control center.This is very frustrating and quite annoying. I am using a dual monitor setup and I have tried disabling my 2nd monitor when I play a game but that still causes this problem. Also I am using the drivers I got right off the ATI website.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy problem is I downloaded a bunch of games, some work fine, others have no sound, others have sound for a while then have buzzing,screeching noises and can go mute and some of the games freeze. About 7 out of 10 games have this problem. I also have compiz fusion with full animations running with the globe and everything else is running smooth and fine. My computer has a intel media graphics card and its 1.73 ghz celeron processor with 1.5 gigs of ram. This is all just a big issue with games and other programs are fine.

I have steam running through wine, and i can play empire:total war with out and issue, but if I want to change a song, open a web browser, type in a chat, or anything that would deselect Empire it freezes. If I have empire in windowed mode I can move freely between programs. My system stays fine when empire freezes, have to end the empire process and reopen it. Not sure if the issue is with wine, my computer, or steam.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a problem that pops up with some games, sometimes: sauerbraten, lugaru, and nexuiz being the ones that pop to mind.
The problem is that when the game starts/loads the mouse "cursor" in the game will not work... the thing is frozen. The "fix" is to jump to a virtual terminal, via alt-ctrl-1, and restart KDM, then I log back into the session and everything is working swell.
This problem does not occur in Osmos, World of Goo, Warzone 2100, or the Linux Ryzom client.
I thought about adding an explicit /etc/init.d/kdm restart in my /etc/kde4/kdm/Xreset file, but that seems too draconian.
This has been a recurring problem on several machines with several 7000, 8000, and 9000 series Nvidia cards running under the proprietary driver, on both 32-bit and 64-bit AMD processors ever since Lenny and up through Wheezy. And it occurs on the following desktop/windowing environments: KDE4.4, icewm, fluxbox, blackbox, E17.
I would guess that it's a driver issue or a driver+xorg configuration issue.
PS: Please don't suggest that I should use the open source driver.
When I play some fullscreen games such as Trackballs, the bottom part of the game gets "chopped off". If I choose not to play in fullscreen (via the game options), I can see the whole game.
I'm guessing this could be a bug in the nvidia graphics driver?
I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the latest nvidia driver. I know it's a "closed source" driver, but it was the only one I was offered to install.

In windowed mode it runs fairly well without crashing.

I was just browsing and it said something about it requiring 256MB of RAM to install the 9.04 OS. I was curious if that would cause the freezing during install and the freezing during usage of my laptop.
View 9 Replies View RelatedMy old custom PC is starting to die on me. Half the time the bios won't POST, and when it does beep and start to load, the system will freeze at random. It will freeze in bios settings, loading up the OS, or just whenever it wants to. Sooner or later I actually get the computer running, and it will freeze less and less frequently until it will be able to stay unfrozen for days as long as I don't reboot it. Rebooting the machine will usually start the whole freezing process all over again. Anyway, I want to learn how to figure out what is not working on my computer. I have been switching out RAM, PSUs, video cards, and bios settings to see if I could fix it, but nope. So how do I go about diagnosing this problem? I'm pretty much assuming it's a hardware one.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have host server for xen (11.2 x86_64) and another server holding linux images. Those images are accesible via NFS.
When I am installing new machine on my xen host and using images on nfs share; whole host-machine freeze during installation (random time, random packages, but it freeze everytime). I had to hard rebooted. Machine do not respond to ping. Performing same installaltion from local copy of same image (copy is done through NFS !) is always vithout any problem.
Xen host machine is MSI Wind and it have gb ethernet. I had some problem with it on Windows XP (disconecting) but on Windows Vista it was ok. On Linux I also did not encounter any problem so far.
Strange thing is that after hang there is no error in /var/log/messages. I would like to investigate what`s going on, what cause this freeze.
I am thing about sysrq messages, but this machine do not have any com port.

It's happened twice. I've come back to my computer after a couple of hours and the screen is black, but it responds to nothing, so I just power it off.
View 1 Replies View Relatedmy computer froze solid, and it would not react to anything. X didn't react to Ctrl+Alt+Backspace, not Ctrl+Alt+Del, so I had to turn it off using the power button.
This is the first time my computer freezes like this, the log files did not reveal any HW errors. Is it possible that someone in the channel did not like my level of Java skill, and flooded me to disconnect?
By the way; Im using slackware 13.1 with the default kernel (2.6.33.4) and irssi as IRC client.
I know that if you eg. ICMP-flood someone, the traffic will be denied and, but can it provoke other behavior from the computer?
So my question is; can a IRC flood/DDoS attack cause a computer to freeze sub zero?
Basically, this has required me to force restart my computer whenever something causes my computer to freeze: graphics driver or gnome, or the X server, I'm a newbie so I don't really know what the problem is.
I looked into the /dev folder today to find nvidia0 (I saw an error message once that said that it couldn't open it...), and there were TONS of files marked as unreadable/unknown file type. There were files called tty up to 63, ram up to 15, and vcsa up to vcsa7...etc. I saw this thread when I googled my problem, and I'm worried about the effect all these force restarts are having on my computer. I can't imagine this is a good thing, how do I stop/fix this?
Come to think of it, I didn't start seeing the 'blue mist' mentioned in my other thread until I force restarted the graphically demanding program that froze everything. Could this be the source of my problem?
I have openSUSE 11.4 KDE 64 bit. openSUSE is really great, but I hate the freeze when I startup my computer. Desktop appears but I cannot do anything. This takes approximately 20 to 30 seconds and than my plasmoid-networkmanager shows network is up. As from this moment freeze is over.
I already tried to switch off ipv6 and put nomodeset in grub, though this is not helping. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how I can solve this?
I have a Ubuntu 10.04 fresh installation on my HP laptop. Installation successful and boot OK. But the desktop randomly freeze. During freeze(about 15s each time), all programs are not responsive. Sometimes I can switch program by click, but program seems locked. How can I know which module cause the freeze?

I am running ubuntu 10.04 with two 1024x768 lcd monitors running from a Nvidia 9800gt graphics card running in twinview. I ant to maximixe WoW(World of Warcraft)(running under wine) as fullscreen across both screens. The WoW client recognizes a resolution option of 2048x768, but when i apply it, it squeezes it onto one monitor. how to fullscreen across both?
And i have removed the touching sides of the monitor cases so the screens touch directly so it is feasible to play.
also, i am using the latest nvidia drivers
I have been running into trouble with SDL programming. When my program hangs in fullscreen mode I can't find any way to get back to xwindows. Several times I have had to shut off my computer and restart. Is there some way to minimize or window a fullscreen application? I am using Ubuntu 9.10.

Every time the program starts it is full screen, and even if you can get to the "Leave fullscreen" button, it still reverts to full screen almost immediately.I have tried deleting all the aisleriot folders under .gconf/ but it still behaves in the same way.

1. while playing any video file in VLC or any other player, i try to fullscreen or back to normal then the VLC just stopped for 5-7 seconds, video is running but in the screen it does not show running just sound comes.
2. while i open firefox or maximize it from clicking on taskbar, it take time similar thing the nautilus do when its going to maximize.
i don't know what the problem is, sometimes i feel it is because of compiz and emerald effact, but when i was ubuntu8.10 user, there was not such problem, it runs smooth.

Here is the story. I was on my windows partition playing some games, but i also wanted to watch hulu on my second screen. To my amazement flash would exit full screen (on second screen) when it became out of focus because of a click on my main screen. so i did a search on the web and they have a flash hack that keeps it from exiting when it loses main focus. This is what we need!! can some1 with slightly more hacking know-how then me make this hack work for us over on linux?

When I run apps like ZSNES or XBMC in fullscreen their output is clipped at the bottom. It's like their output is shifted down about 20%.Here are some screenshots of the two appsI'm running Ubuntu 10.04 64bit with an Intel card. It even covers up the application bar on the left. As far as I can see, this issue only occurs with firefox. Other apps are not affected.
