Ubuntu :: Formatting An USB Device - Gparted - Doesn't Work At All

i guess the topic header is a give away. I want to format my USB-Stick, i looked in the internet and actually came up with two ways: gparted -> doesn't work at all, it doesn't even show the stick
-Konsole:
sudo umount /media/Stick
sudo mkfs -t vfat /media/Stick
sudo eject /media/Stick
(even tho i am not a big fan of commands i don't get, i tried it and got this error line:
mkfs.vfat 3.0.7 (24 Dec 2009)
/media/EEB3-EFCB: No such file or directory)
so well, neither way did work. Is there an other solution i might try? €: Well it actually worked as far that none of my Ubuntu OS can recognize the stick anymore so i need a way to mount the usb stick as well!

I've created the GParted LiveUSB from what I found on the Ubuntu forum. Apparently the instructions given on GParted website doesn't work.
I essentially copied the necessary gparted files to my USB and then made it bootable using syslinux.
I've set the boot sequence properly to boot from my USB but it still doesn't do anything and just brings up the screen where I select my OSs (I have a dual-boot system with WinXP).
I don't have access to a CD-drive so will have to use the USB. Is there a different way to make the LiveUSB?

i had an ntfs partition..i formatted it to ext4 with gparted..w i cant write any files to it..i think because gparted executed with root previliges so it has now made root the owner of the drive.

I'm a Ubuntu 9.10 user and have baught a WD 1.5TB HDD. When just formating it with gparted it's extreemly slow! I have read that with gparted 0.51 there are ways to get this harddrive to work correct but there are no 0.51 packages available for 9.10.

I formatted 56 GBs of my hard disk space into fat32 and it seems that 27 gbs of it is used! Though direct checking from the volume itself shows nothing like this, gparted still insists 27 gbs are used.

In Ubuntu 9.10, I was successfully able to use my Pinnacle Dazzle DVC 100 (a cheap USB analog video capture device). I use it for backing up old video that is stored on tapes, and it isn't working with my current install of Ubuntu 10.04. When I plug the device in, it should be detected and the em28xx module should be loaded. This fails and /var/log/messages has the following:

I recently installed Ubuntu on my HP Pavilion dv4-2012br and am really enjoying it, except that it is conflicting with my sound card. The only way I can hear some sound is going into System> Preferences> Sound> Output and selecting "Internal analog stereo audio" which makes the sound hollow and not at all pleasant to listen to music. When I mark "RS880 audio device [Radeon HD 4200] Digital Stereo (HDMI)" the sound is not played.
I followed step by step these instructions: [URL] yet the only way to run the audio through the "Internal analog stereo audio. "
Just adding: I used the "Install with Synaptic Package Manager" way to do it. And i'm using a desktop version of Ubuntu.

I am having trouble with my new Huawei USB modem. It gets detected and lsusb shows me the vendor id and product id as 12d1 : 140b Huawei Technologies Pvt Ltd but the device does not create any entry in /dev/ttyUSB* am i missing something?

Ok my current issue is that my ubuntu partition(my currently most used os) at the moment is getting low onspace so i decided to take 40GB from my windows one since it wasn't using it. I made it smaller and left the area unallocated. I got into gparted using the live disk and it refuses to work for me. I cannot move my ext4 partition to the 40GB partition and put that free space at the end. This is the first time i've ever had this problem. This is the first time i've ever tried ext4.

I have a little problem. As soon as I boot my computer, Grub gives me an error 17. It happened after I tried to resize my Windows partition with a program. I have a dual boot between Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04.I've tried everything I could find on this forum and on the rest of the internet, but nothing was working. Most of them require a Windows CD (god knows where it is) or reinstalling grub and all that stuff, but it's all not working.I'm currently on a Ubuntu Live CD. Gparted doesn't detect any of my partitions, but just says 232 GB unallocated space. Palimpsest Disk Utility and the Explorer see all my partitions though EXCEPT my Windows 7 partition I tried to resize.

I bought a cheap 32 gb usb flash drive in China which worked just fine on Ubuntu. However, when I attempted to tranfer som files to a Windows7 computer I got a message saying I had to format the flash drive before using. I did this, but the formating failed. When inserting the flash drive in Ubuntu again it was it was detected but unable to mount. I tried to format it again using GParted, but again it was unable to format. Now Ubuntu won't detect the flash drive when inserting. Windows7 does detect, but I get the message saying it needs formating.

Total Newbie running Win 7, Lucid Lynx 64-bit, sharing partitionUbuntu keeps reporting low disk space. I've read dozens of postings, looked at gparted and done some resizing but it's still not right. I have logical partitions on my drive numbered /dev/sda5 through /dev/sda14.I want to reclaim unused space from one of the partitions in the middle /dev/sda7. First I intend to resize /dev/sda7 by leaving the beginning of the partition as is and shrinking the end to create some unallocated space between /dev/sda7 and /dev/sda8. Then I would like to create a new logical partition in this unallocated space. My question is what will be the device name of the newly created logical partition? Will it be /dev/sda15 (I hope)? Or will it be /dev/sda8 and all partitions after this be renamed?
The GParted manual states that if a partition is deleted, all of the following partitions will be renamed, but it doesn't say anything specifically about renaming partitions after adding a new partition in the middle of a partition table.

I have available Space and i want this Space on my Ubuntu. That Means that l want the unallocated 92.77GB on my /dev/sda8 (ext4)?!?!?. But I cant Resize the Partition ... What do I have to do ? I tried it using Ubuntu on my USB. But it was the same.... Do I have to unmount something?

Using install disc burned from ubuntu-9.10-desktop-amd64.iso ; disc verified. Could not install because installation hung during partman. Booted into LiveCD (using same disc), and GParted works, but partman does not.
I've searched Google and this Forum with no luck; but perhaps I'm just not asking correctly. Any help - even a workaround Is there a way to use something other than partman, or to mount the root, home, and swap in a way that makes partman skip it during install?

using Ubuntu desktop ltd Ver.? mp3player type - philips gogear 1gb so the problem is that my player just one day got frozen when I turned it on..(just shows philips logo and hangs on) the last time this happened I formatted it in winxp with a lot of effort.. in linux when I try to plug it in it just shows "cant mount device dev/sdb/" I already tried formating it with gparted but it isnt possible because I'am not able to choose "format" from menu.... is there are any other way that I can format it using gparted or another app.

I had this corrupted external hdd and so I formatted the main partition on it on windows but messed up in the formatting and ended up having to format the entire thing. I got some weird message about it not being initialized (no not mounted) so I was in compmgmt.msc in windows and right clicked it in device manager and it asked for master boot or GUID I selected the latter and formatted. Worked fine and all for a bit but now it doesn't show up as a drive. I noticed when using compmgmt.msc it showed up that it had installed driver software and was being recognized but in the partition editing area there was nothing on this drive, reinstalling driver software doesn't seem to help. Also GParted wont load up when I have it plugged in and Disk Utility doesn't show it. I am requesting help to fix this problem within Ubuntu 10.10 somehow so I can use it properly.

I have 3 Ubuntu installations & a PCLINUXOS, plus Windows XP installed on one hard disk. I still can boot to each one of them and can mount each one using Ubuntu.
The problem "may" have occurred when I reduced the size of some linux partitions using gparted. I still have plenty of space in each of those partitions.
When I started gparted all of the HD was unallocated. I did that from each ubuntu installation and the PCLINUX installation, plus LIVECDs. All indicated the space was unallocated.
When I did an fdisk -l from a Puppy Linux LiveCD I got a normal start and ends of each partition.
When I tried it from Ubuntu installation or live cd, I received the following types of responses:

2) booting and partitioning software from other OSs (e.g., DOS FDISK, OS/2 FDISK) Plus the Windows partition seems to go over its limits.
Since all of my OS installations are still working, I don't know how critical this is. From reading another post, I understand this might be able to be fixed by making some changes in fstab.

I'm using 'Adobe Flash plug-in 10.3.183.4ubuntu0.11.04.1', installed from the package repos on kubuntu, and since the last update, it has broken all flash functionality in both rekonq and firefox.I have tried removing and reinstalling the package multiple times, both with and without the browsers open. Can anyone suggest a way to restoring functionality?

When I installed my 64 bit system of Ubuntu 10.04 the sound worked very well and I were very happy. The problem started however when I installed Skype which uses pulseaudio. As soon as I start skype (or any other application that uses pulse, HoN for example) the applications sound output or input does not work at all. If I have pulseaudio started in some way, applications that I suppose do not use it like spotify or flash player stops to produce sounds. And when I type "pulseaudio" in the terminal it gives me this:

I'm having trouble getting compiz to work on my Laptop. It worked for a while and then I turned on Shift Switcher and a message popped up saying..."The new value for the button binding for the action Terminate in plugin Shift Switcher conflicts with the action Zoom Window of the Scale Addons plugin. Do you wish to disable Zoom Window in the Scale Addons plugin?" I was given the option of Set Terminate anyway, Don't set Terminate, and Disable Zoom Window. I clicked Don't set Terminate and ever since the only thing that works in compiz are the bindings in the general options. I've used synaptic to completely remove and then reinstall compiz but the problem persist. Something else weird, all of the changes I made are still there, even after complete removal, but they don't work?

When I try to hibernate, the computer just goes to a blank, black screen and doesn't turn off. I have to hold the power button to get it to shut down, and when I turn it back on none of the programs running before hibernation have been saved.

I just recently (about an hour ago) installed Ubuntu Netbook edition on my old laptop, and I was greeted with the message, that unity could not be run due to some sort of missing driver...fair enough, I was then greeted with the default Ubuntu desktop, I installed all my needed software (wine, google chrome) and installed the missing display drivers. I then rebooted the system, and once again I am stuck with the default desktop, and not the Unity interface. I checked the software center, and it says Unity IS in fact installed.. And yet I cannot make it appear. So now I ask you Ubuntu veterans. How do I make it work?
P.S. I wiped the system of windows, and the computer is an old HP Pavilion DV6000

I have this annoying problem since day one.I am testing out Red Hat RHEL5, everything is fine except DNS look up.If I ping www.google.com, it doesn't work, ping ip address it all works;if I bring up browser, put www.google.com it doesn't work, can't find the name, however, simply put ip address there it works.My DNS seeting seems ok, and the DNS works from Windows box.
