Ubuntu :: Format 4.5 TB RAID 5 For Multimedia Server?

Jul 22, 2010

I have created a software raid 5 array which is currently sitting idle all space is unallocated. My plan was to use all 4.5 TB as a single partition for multimedia files. My problem is that I am trying to set up a file server acessible to windows systems al well as linux. Is there a file system I can use to partition this space that will geve me what I want?

Server :: How To Format RAID 5 Using 3 Disks

Aug 16, 2011

I have built a couple RAID's, but I'm uncertain of how I should format the partitions of the raid. Should I format partitions on each disk, and then add them to a raid, or should I create a raid on unformated disks and then format the raid as a partition? Does it matter, and are there performance/reliability issues? I'm creating a RAID-5 using 3 SATA disks on RHEL for user data area.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Format For Server & RAID Setup For Multi Platform Read/write/access?

Jun 23, 2011

I'm looking to set up a server with attached mass storage device and tape autoloader to run linux. It's set up under Windows at the moment. Goal is to have users, connecting from individual workstations and laptops, backup their data to the linux server. On their personal machine, some users run linux, some MacOS, some Windows. I plan to set up the 5 500 GB drives as RAID5. I understand that if setting up as software raid the format is "physical volume for RAID". Under this setup, will Windows users be able to read/write and function as expected? I can't assume only linux user access.

Ubuntu Servers :: Partition RAID Device (MD0) And Then Format It?

Feb 26, 2011

I am finally, and happily ditching Windows IIS, SQL Server, and ASP in favor of LAMP. Not only will I save a bunch of money on operating systems but I've found php and MySQL development to be much faster than their Microsoft counterparts.Currently I have two W2008 and two Ubuntu servers running and doing virtually parallel tasks. I want to can the W2008 machines but I am not 100% sure of my Ubuntu mirrors.Everything seems to be working fine. I've copied tons of data back and forth as a primitive test but sometimes things work fine for all the wrong reasons. Here's where I get confused.

Question 1:Do I need to partition the RAID device (MD0) and then format it?From my experience this is necessary to get the device to mount.

Question 2:In this case was it also necessary to format the individual drive partitions?

Question 3:If I do a daily cat /proc/mdstat is this all I need to do to check the drive status.

Question 4:Is there any other check I can do to assure that the mirrors are created, mounted, and operating correctly?

Fedora Installation :: Software RAID With Advanced Format WD-EARS Drives?

Dec 31, 2010

My System Intel Core Duo E5300 Mobo - Gigabyte G31M-ES2L 1GB DDR2 800MHz RAM 4 x WD20EARS HDD I have been trying to install Fedora or Ubuntu for over a week. I thought it would take an hour and i would be away. I have been trying to install using the mdadm Software RAID feature. Everytime it takes about a day to format the drives and then i get an installation error. The drives state they are ready to use as is on any operating system other then WinXP, but this does not appear to be the case.

I am very new to Fedora... I have been doing some reading.[URL].. That information has been promising. I have been able to get into Fdisk off the live CD but i can't figure out how or if it is possible to do what i want it to.

Has anyone had any luck getting these drives to function correctly in a software RAID? I have had good luck with WD drives in the past and just assumed these drives would do what i wanted to but alas i have been proven wrong.

The partitions i wanted was...
- A 2GB swap parition
- A 10 GB RAID 1 partition for Fedora
- The remaining space as a Raid 5 for files.

Am i just banging my head against a wall here, or is this possible.

CentOS 5 Hardware :: Connect A RAID Box To The Server Via LSI 8880EM2 RAID Controller

Aug 3, 2010

I am trying to connect a RAID Box to the server via LSI 8880EM2 RAID controller. The raid box is FUjitsu Externus DX60 with raid 1 configured. The server is Fujitsu Primergy SX300 S5 with LSI 8880EM2 RAID card. The external raid box is being recognised by the raid controllers bios.

The server runs CentOS 5.5 64bit. I have installed the megaraid_sas driver from LSI website and MegaCLI utility but CentOS still fails to see the box.MegaCLI utility, when launched from CentOS, recognises the raid box, CentOS does not(no mapping being created in /dev).

I have also tried to create a logical RAID0 HDD on one physical HDD(as seen by MegaCLI) with MegaCLI utility in CentOS.The result was success and the new logical drive could have been used, but when restarting the server, the controllers' bios fails with an error (not surprised(one logical RAID0 on one physical HDD)) and configuration is being erased.

Has anyone tried connecting 8880EM2 controller to a raid box with raid configured on the box, running it all under CentOS and what were the results.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Ffmpeg / Mtv Format - Error "Unable To Find A Suitable Output Format For Output.mtv"

Jan 22, 2011

I'm still trying to find out if my coby mp3 player will actually play mtv video files as is advertised.

ffmpeg -formats does list mtv but the only command I really ever used was one to convert a vid to an mp3 so I tried Code: ffmpeg -i test.mp4 -acodec copy output.mtv it returns Code: Unable to find a suitable output format for 'output.mtv' I can't find any mtv files online for purchase or free for that matter, so I know this is all pretty obscure but shouldn't there be a way to convert them since ffmpeg lists mtv format?

Ubuntu Servers :: RAID-5 Recovery (spare/active) / Degraded And Can't Create Raid ,auto Stop Raid [md1]?

Feb 1, 2011

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.

Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:

mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]

I was able to examine the disks though:

Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....

Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

They are not mission critical. Hence, I wanted to remove the raid system and use as a non-raid system. By doing it, The applications and data can grow upto 600GB. I do not want to loose the data and setup. I am not so clear about RAID system and its conversion.

Server :: In Apache Server, Change Log File Location And Log Format For Access Log Fil?

Aug 19, 2009

I installed Apache server with Debian 5.0.2 Lenny. I am trying to write a script which would analysis web log files. I found the log files on /var/log/apache2. There is an access log file, `access.log`. My question is what configuration file determines the location and the name of the access log file. How can I change them? I used CustomLog in /etc/apache2/apache2.conf like below.LogFormat ": %h %l %u %t "%r" %>s %b" common
CustomLog /home/test/my_log_file common Apache2 generated /home/test/my_log_file. But no logs were written in the file even after I run `/etc/init.d/apache2 restart`. Ichanged the log file location. It still didn't work. However, Apache2 still wrote logs in the file `/var/log/apache2/access.log`

Server :: Find A .ovm Format Image Of A Windows Server Installation?

I currently run Windows Server 2008 at my office, but I'm looking to test Samba as a PDC for future reference/consulting work. Before I go and try to configure Samba, I wanted to ask if anyone can think of pitfalls I would run into and perhaps recommend a better setup:
<10 PCs running either Windows XP, Vista, or 7.

VirtualBox running Debian (planning on swapping for Fedora) on a Windows XP Home computer.
Computers are connected to a large switch, which is connected to a wireless router. The Windows server doesn't employ ICS (essentially is just a $1500 PDC ). where I could find a .ovm format image of a windows server installation? I'm guessing vmware would work in this regard, but I'm not fond of using purposely crippled software.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cannot Rip CDs In MP3 Format

Jun 16, 2010

After installing Ubuntu 10.04, 64-bit, I can no longer rip CDs to MP3 format. I can play MP3 files on the computer just fine. And this isn't limited to a single application.I normally use Sound Juicer to rip my CDs. Under Edit >> Preferences >> Format, the drop down menu no longer lists MP3 as an output option; however, if I click on the "Edit Profiles" button, there is a "CD Quality, MP3" option and it is set to active.

I'm having the same problem with Rhythmbox. Under Edit >> Preferences >> Music, the "Preferred format" box is empty, the dropdown menu is grayed out, and clicking the "Edit" box only shows the same sound profiles as Sound Juicer with no way to make one enabled (yet they are marked as active).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Best Audio Format ?

I want to know what the BEST overall quality audio format is. I'm only talking about simple listening, not editing, if it makes a difference.

I don't care what the size of the song comes out to here. If a 5 minute song ends up being 25mb, so be it. And what is your reason behind your choice, short and sweet.

Server :: Configuring RAID 5 Under Ubuntu Server 9.10

Jan 16, 2010

I have a problem configuring a RAID server under Ubuntu 9.10 (kernel 2.6.31.17) with mdadm (v2.6.7.1). First I had some hardware issues that finally got solved by using another motherboard. Now I am dealing with the software part.In order to ease things, I am trying to configure a RAID 5 with three partitions in one disk. I have two HD's, one IDE where the OS lies (recognized as sda), and another where I intend to build the RAID (recognized as sdb). In this second drive I have made three partitions (sdb1, sdb2 & sdb3) of the same size.I've already re-installed Ubuntu 9.10 a couple of times, zeroed the superblocks of the partitions, repartitioned the disks with different partition sizes (I am using 5 GB partitions to save time). I've gone through this process several times, and I really don't know how to move forward now. If RAID is about trust and reliability, this is exactly what I'm not able to get.
