Ubuntu Installation :: Geda PCB Layout Package - Dependencies Failed?

Jun 9, 2011

I am needing to install the geda pcb layout package on my system. The one that is in the repository is a much older version, 20091103, and some projects I need to modify were developed using a newer version, 20100929, and the older one on Ubuntu will not open them. I downloaded the pcb source and ran configure and a couple of dependencies failed that I was able to correct with synaptic. But, then it complained about not having gdlib-config. Which I cannot find that in the repositories. What do I need to get?

Hardware :: Installing NVidia GeForce 2 MX 400 - ERROR: Unable To Determine The Version Of The Kernel Sources

Jan 11, 2011

I have installed Arch Linux quite a few weeks ago; but I'm still trying my best to install the nividia display driver for my graphics card (nVidia Geforce 2 MX 400). Not only in Arch but have tried installing on other distros and still failed. I have read up all the documentations and I still find it hard to do this task. When I used the terminal and executed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-94.43.01-pkg1.run file without any window manager running, I get this problem:

Quote: ERROR: Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources located in '/lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/build'. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option.

ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at [URL].

Now I'm using Arch Linux Kernel 2.6.35 and I have got the source. But where am I suppose to put it now? I do not want to change the kernel. I just want the nVidia installer to identify that there is a kernel source so that it can install. I have searched up a lot on websites and ended up with no proper guide. This is a very old driver. So since now I have the nVidia driver installation package and also the kernel source

Fedora Installation :: Error - There Isn't Enough Free Space On The Disks To Create The Layout

Aug 14, 2009

I got a new computer (core i7, 6gb ram, 500gb hdd).I first installed Windows 7, because I remembered how Fedora 9 created a dual-boot screen nicely, while if I installed XP on a system with Fedora 9 it would just take over the boot and boot to XP.Anyway, so Windows 7 is installed, and I got the Fedora 11 DVD install.I partitioned the hdd as thus (on win7 installation): 93gb windows system, 300gb media partition, 90gb unformatted. When I boot the installation and select the "use free space" I get an error that there isn't enough free space on the disks to create the layout.I also tried to create a custom layout, but after a few errors I gave up on that what should I do to get Fedora 11 installed?

Ubuntu :: MDADM - How To Determine Which Drive Has Failed

Aug 7, 2011

I know this is probably a very generic linux question, but since I am using ubuntu - I thought it safer to ask here. I have jumped into the deep end of linux - and I am afraid that I will be forced to swim sooner rather than later.

Let me start at the beginning - I am and probably will be a windows fan for a long time - let me not list the reasons - or else you guys will probably hang met out to dry - the one thing I have discovered - is that windows sucks in generating a software RAID - especially the RAID 5 that i was looking for any case - after loosing plenty data via windose - I decided to attempt linux/ ubuntu. I must say - so far so good.

I used this excellent guide: [URL] and must say that the raid is performing admirably - I am currently busy adding/growing the 12th 1Tb drive onto the RAID, and no issues so far(some other major WOW advantages i have noticed... like speed writing too and reading from the RAID.. )

See below MDstat outputcat proc mdstat:
Personalities : [linear] [multipath] [raid0] [raid1] [raid6] [raid5] [raid4] [raid10]
md0 : active raid5 sdl1[11] sdj1[10] sdb1[1] sdm1[6] sdk1[2] sdi1[8] sdh1[0] sdg1[3] sdf1[4] sde1[9] sdd1[5] sdc1[7]
9767599360 blocks super 0.91 level 5, 64k chunk, algorithm 2 [12/12] [UUUUUUUUUUUU]
[==========>..........] reshape = 50.7% (495864576/976759936) finish=1482.0min speed=5407K/sec
unused devices: <none>

My questions :
If one drive fails on the array(for example SDK1) - how the heck do i determine which physical hardware device it is that has failed? (without compromising the other data - yes unfortunately I cant afford to backup 11TB of data - personal server). I don't have space in the box for a mouse - not even talking about a hot spare drive - thus adding the backup drive before removing the faulty drive is rather difficult - but if that's the only option I will have to keep with that as everybody know RAID5 is only 1 drive backup - so partly I would like to solve the issue as quick as possible -without having to resort to disconnecting one drive at a time to determine which is which. If the drive assignments ( SDA/SDB/SDC) is constant

What is the most intuitive/fast way to determine that a faulty drive exist in the array? - i.e. is there some sort of GUI solution for MDADM that will tell me the moment that a drive has turned faulty? - The box is currently not on the internet -meaning notification via email is not possible. Is there a non-destructible way to convert the RAID-5 to RAID-6? (I would rather sacrifice 1TB of free space - for peace of mind) - and RAID6 will make troubleshooting a bit easier since 3 drives will have to fail before data-loss.

Fedora :: Installing Libcurl / Error: Failed Dependencies?

Jul 22, 2011

I'm new to Linux and am trying to install libcurl to use in my c++ code on my fedora 14 system. I went to the libcurl site and downloaded the binary package for Redhat Linux 7.2 on i386. There was no download for Fedora. It was an .rpm package and so I used rpm -i libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386.rpm to install it.

I received the following errors:
error: Failed dependencies:
libcom_err.so.3 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386
libcrypto.so.2 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386

libsasl.so.7 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i386
libssl.so.2 is needed by libcurl4-7.21.7-1.i38

Do I need to simply download these files? Or is it a problem of downloading the wrong binary package?
If I do need to download them then from where?

Never mind, I just did a yum install libcurl and it worked out......

OpenSUSE Network :: Error On Updating / Installing Software - Connection Failed

Oct 21, 2010

I had this issue with Fedora Core 13, so I switched my laptop back to OpenSuse and continued to have the problem. I can do a host lookup for software.opensuse.com and I get a correct response ...
Code:
linux-edxs:/etc # host software.opensuse.org
software.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.150
linux-edxs:/etc # host download.opensuse.org
download.opensuse.org has address 195.135.221.134

Firefox works. Thunderbird finds my mail servers just fine. SSH works. But then when I try to do anything involving software updates or installation, I get ...
Code:
linux-edxs:/etc # zypper update
Retrieving repository 'Updates for openSUSE 11.3 11.3-1.82' metadata []
Download (curl) error for '[URL]':
Error code: Connection failed
Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'download.opensuse.org'

I've seen others here post queries about this, and I'll tell you what it was in my case: our DSL modem's DHCP server returns its own IPV4 address as the DNS server. When I looked at /etc/resolve.conf, I saw "nameserver: 192.168.50.254" on the last line -- the IPV4 address of our DSL modem. I manually inserted "nameserver" lines for our ISP's two actual DNS servers, and everything magically started working. Why this should confuse some software under Linux, but not other software, is a mystery. It also seems to be Gnome-specific (I didn't have this problem with OpenSuse 11.3 and KDE 4).

Ask if they're using Gnome, and ask them to check resolve.conf. A lot of DSL modems and home/small office routers return their own IP address (i.e., the same as the gateway address) for the DNS server on a DHCP query. The solution is to manually edit resolve.conf and put in your ISP's DNS server addresses manually. Incidentally, just my opinion, but Network Manager needs to make this an option. Under Windows, for example, you can select "automatically assign DNS" or you can enter them manually, even if you're using DHCP. It'd be nice if Network Manager permitted that.

Ubuntu Installation :: Installation Failed 10.04 - Installed Encountered An Unrecoverable Error?

Aug 4, 2010

I am trying to install 10.04 32bit onto a new 1.5TB harddrive. I had previously installed 10.04 64bit on an old drive in the same nmachine. I partitioned and formatted the new drive using the old system. I have a couple of windows partitions and restored Win2K images to them, 4 formated Ext3 partions for whever flavour of Linux appeals to me a swap and two huge NTFS Data (home) and work areas. I installed Grub on the new drive, it also has its own partition for boot config files. The old drive has now gone.

Grub2 boots OK and gives me option for all the OS's even the one that are gone, thats OK I can fix that later with grub-update. Win2K boots fine and I see my NTFS partitions.

Now I boot from the Live i386 CD and chosse to install Ubuntu. The only thing that not allowed to default is where to install. Specify partition manually, Choose a spare 20GB Ext3 and the swap is already there too. I let it reformat to Ext3 and mount as /. (In Advanced I let the install boot loader default to ticked on /dev/sda )

The install goes OK until I hit the pop-up "Installation Failed". The installed encountered an unrecoverable error. A desktop session will be run etc etc..

I have tried this at least 10 times no. I downloaded and cut a new CD even though the old one worked fine on another box. Tried unticking the boot loader. Disable the floppy, removed the floppy.

I am relatively new to Ubuntu. Where do I look for the cause of the problem? I'll cut and paste the install log files in a moment.
