I know I sound pretty nooby atm, but I'm thinking of making a switch to Kubuntu. But only if it has a software centre, similar to Ubuntu, I know Linux Mint has it now so I would expect same from Kubuntu (Y). I just cba to run off a live CD, I'm typing an important document atm.

Only problem is when there's no information to read I can't learn anything. So I've looked and looked but I can't find anything on the KDM theme manage that comes with kubuntu 10.10.
SO here's what I want to do:
All I want to do is just change the login and splash screens to something more to my liking when I got to System settings -> System Administration -> Login Screen , which is the KDM that comes on kubuntu (trust me I looked for kdmtheme under KpackageKit I get a chance to pick new themes I go through and find something I like and go to install and it doesn't show. All I get is the original one and that's it.
why it doesn't show up or how I may go about changing these two things
When using KUbuntu, I can open up Nautilus and Network Places, and see my other Ubuntu computer. When I am on another network, can other people see me? What's the point of this feature?

I have downloaded kubuntu and have tried it from the live cd. The question I have, is can I also install this on my pc and choose at login which version to boot and do I install it from the cd at boot up or can I install it from the archive manager in ubuntu 11.04.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI am running Kubuntu 6.10. I opened adept package manager to create a new repository. It opened and I created the new repository (/home/dell/repository/)it went through. I closed adept. Opened adept and a error message reading this popped up: "The APT database could not be opened! This may because by incorrect APT configuration or some similar problem. Try running apt-setup and apt-get in terminal and see if it helps resolve the problem." I ran it in terminal (I was online) for both and update and upgrade in both apt-get apt-setup, but it tells me "E: type "/home/dell/repository/" is not known on line 1 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list E: The list of sources could not be read." I tried opening Add/Remove Programs but it did the same thing as adept. I am a linux newbie, and haven't toyed with APT database. When I added the new repository I just opened Manage Repositories and then entered "/home/dell/repository/", clicked add and it was put on the list as "Comment | /home/dell/repository/" in a grey text. I right clicked on it and clicked enable, it stayed grey. I left the program then. How can I fix the APT database?

So the other day I was in IRC and someone had brought up a problem where they created a new Administrative user, but didnt have rights to use sudo. Looked into the problem a little bit to figure out what was wrong, and it turns out that when you create a new user through the user manager (in kubuntu, anyways. Havent tested in Gnome.) the user gets added to the adm group, however, a quick look at the sudoers file shows that its looking for users in the admin group to allow the use of sudo. So, to solve the problem we do the following: If youre on the new admin user (which Im assuming you are) use the following commands:

su [insert username of old account without brackets]
sudo usermod -G admin [username of new admin account without brackets]
exit
Then simply logout, and then log back in (not always necessary, but the easiest way to flush the permissions.)

Means were going to Switch User to the old admin account

This simply adds the admin group to the secondary group list for the new user

I have two OS in my system. Windows& and Kubuntu. Both are in separate hard disks. I was using both. In between i have upgraded my system. now when i am giving priority to hard disk containing kubuntu, i can login to kubuntu, but cant get in to windows7. i have upgraded grub but not working. when i am giving priority to hard disk containig windows7 it enters and work properly. but not working in the previous.

Tri-booting. They were installed in the order I listed above. I ran into a few bugs with Kubuntu, so I no longer want to use it. I want to use GParted on a LiveCD to format Kubuntu and expand my Ubuntu home partition to sit on top of Kubuntu's space right now. If I nuke Kubuntu, will Grub still exist with my Ubuntu/XP entries to boot?
I would like to apply KDE on my Kubuntu because the current one blew up. But each time I to sudo get-apt it seems to be fetching from the cloud. Is there a way I can make it to read from my local Kubuntu CD? I have both Ubuntu 10.04 LTS and Kubuntu Live CDs.
I believe the local disk read should be faster to translate than to bite the bytes across thousands of miles over the wire right?

When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!
Software center, update manager, Synaptic package manager crashes for no reason. I have not done any recent changes or downloads. I'm running a fresh install of ubuntu 11.04

After a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10-64bit I don't have Hardware Manager, Update Manager or Software Resources just to name a few.I tried sudo apt-get update & sudo apt-get upgrade & everything is up to date.

Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

I noticed I didn't have any wireless connectivty under LXDE, so I checked the LXDE site for the solution, and it said to download and install LXNM, which supports wireless connections. Unfortunately, installing LXNM (apt-get install lxnm) also uninstalled nework-manager, and network-manager-gnome, on top of lxnm not working properly, and stranding me without any way of reinstalling the OS, and without an internet connection (I can't connect with a wired connection, either). Is there anything I can do, aside from reinstalling?

i'm trying to install virt-manager , to run a couple of virtual machines, i created a virtual nic vnet0 and bridged it to my eth0, i have configured the /etc/network/interfaces file with proper static ip, but i beleive the network manager is renaming my nic to eth1 and causing all kinds of problems. I uninstalled network manager and now i can ping anywhere in the network, but not outside it. ie google.com
