Ubuntu :: Disk Drive Not Working In Asus K501 After Update To 10.04

Jun 20, 2010

I have an Asus K501J, which I've had for about eight months and have always had ubuntu on. Periodically this problem comes up: I put a DVD in the disk drive, and the drive spins for a couple of seconds, then stops and that's it. Can't find the disk under places, can't open files with video programs like vlc. The disk ejects fine, but it's as if the laptop doesn't believe there's anything in the drive. This problem seemed to go away after I updated to Ubuntu 10.04, but now it's back. Before the upgrade I took it to my computer expert friend, but (like some other laptop problems) it never seems to manifest in his presence

Ubuntu Installation :: ASUS A8V-MX Recognises SATA Hard Disk?

Aug 11, 2010

This is a solution to a problem that has bugged me for months but I finally got around to solving.I hope this will be useful to anyone using Ubuntu with GRUB2 who has the same problem.I am running Ubuntu 10.4 Lynx which did not recognise the newly-installed SATA HDD.In fact, booting up would face me with a recovery shell. The solution is to add the pci=nomsi kernel parameterTo do this you need to edit the /etc/default/grub file and add the kernel parameter as follows:

Code:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="pci=nomsi"

Ubuntu :: Play DVDs From External Optical Drive On ASUS EEE PC 901?

Jul 20, 2011

Sorry if this question might sound stupid I'm a complete noob here. I bought an ASUS EEE PC 901 second hand and had reformatted the hard disk with a fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.10 netbook remix. formatted the 2 drives as follows : 4 gb hard disk space ext4 , and 8 GB hard disk space ext4 This was after countless problems with Ubuntu 11.04 Desktop edition previously not being able to connect to the internet via my home wifi router. I took the advice on this forum somewhere, someone said 10.10 NBR will not have issues with wifi connectivity. Tried it and it worked. On my current Ubuntu NBR 10.10 installation, absolutely no wifi connectivity problems whatsoever.

Now my brand new MyLink portable USB Optical Drive which plays DVDs and CDs has arrived in the post. I open it, plug it into my ASUS eee pc 901. And nothing happened. I am used to using Windows and its Plug and Play function. Now for the life of me, this just doesn't happen in Ubuntu right now. The computer does recognise the drive though. Under Applications > Disk Utility I can see the optical drive right there and there's an option to use Brasero to copy and burn DVDs. However no option to play. I tried using the Movieplayer that comes installed with this Ubuntu version to play the DVD I'd insertedd into the drive, but on clicking "Add file" to try and search where on the system the DVD file is located, nothing turns up. All I can see are my home directory and the files on my hard drive.

The external optical drive came with a CD with the drivers on the CD, meant to be installed I think. But I have absolutely no idea how to install it on Ubuntu. Or if I need to install it.Can anybody help me out please? I'm starting to think maybe I should have just stuck to the Windows XP that came with this netbook. I would prefer to stick with Ubuntu though as its supposedly faster than Windows...

Ubuntu :: Asus G60 Headphone Jack Not Working?

Nov 16, 2010

I have an Asus G60vx notebook and when I updated to 10.10 I lost audio through my headphones. The speakers work fine, just not the headphones. Normally I am able to sole these things on my own through searching forums and what not, but no solutions I have found work for me so far. Things I have tried:

1. Make sure the latest drivers are installed according to the above, then edit the file /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add the following line:

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-laptop

Reboot and test. Other models to test are:

thinkpad
ideapad
hp_laptop
dell-vostro
olpc-xo-1_5

2. Checking on the alsamixer thru the terminal. Headphones is green, but there is only the 00 notch, like there is no volume to change.
3. Updating my alsa files via synaptics, my kernel model is 2.6.35-23-generic. There is no alsa drivers for this kernel that I can find yet, however I found this, Ubuntu supplied Linux modules for version 2.6.35 ALSA snapshots. Installed it still doesnt work.

Ubuntu Networking :: Asus 1015pem Wireless Not Working?

Oct 17, 2010

i installed ubuntu on my netbook after having a successful install on my asus g51 laptop.

everything works fine except the wireless. for some reason the netbook wont pick up internet via the ethernet connection so i went and got the drivers via synaptic and copied the packages plus the dependencies required (just needed one - dkms). dkms installed fine, but there was an error when i tried to install bcmwl-kernel-source. ubuntu still sees it as installed tho looking in ubuntu software center.

i rebooted just for shits and giggles, cuz it still didnt work. no dice. then i tried to check in that section that shows drivers that arent allowed in a default install as per another thread. its not in there.

my situation doesnt let me connect this netbook via wire and the only way i can get software for it is to download it via my ubuntu connection on my laptop.

Ubuntu :: Nvidia Drivers Not Working In 9.10 On An Asus Ul80vt Laptop

Mar 7, 2010

I have an Asus UL80vt laptop. This laptop has an integrated (Intel) as well as a discrete (Nvidia 210m) graphics card.

I want to use the nvidia proprietary drivers because from what I understand, it's the easiest way to set up dual monitors (I have an external monitor). I installed the latest nvidia driver: NVIDIA-Linux-x86-190.53. When I try to run the NVidia X Server Settings GUI, it tells me that "You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. Please edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server. "

I checked out my xorg.conf and changed the device driver to 'nvidia' instead of 'nv'. Curiously, when I run nvidia-xconfig, it changes the intel device to 'nvidia' which is a problem. So i skipped running that and just stuck with my xorg.conf. When I run startx, I get a message saying "failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:1:0:0".

I've combed through multiple forums which state different kinds of solutions and I've tried different kernel options such as 'vmalloc=512m' or 'noapic' to no avail.

P.S. I've attached my xorg.conf file

Has anyone had any luck with HDMI sound on a EB1012 or the ALC662 card?I have several other devices hooked up via HDMI, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, PC (Windows) and none of them are problematic so I'm pretty sure it's related to the ASUS/Ubuntu somehow.

Ubuntu Installation :: Migrate Working Single Disk System To Existing RAID Array Using Disk UUIDs

Aug 1, 2010

I had done a new lucid install to a 1 TB RAID 1 array using the alternate CD a few weeks back. I messed up that system trying to some hardware working that lucid doesn't have drivers for yet, so I gave up on it and reinstalled to a single 80 GB disk that I now want to move over to the RAID array.

I moved all of the existing files on the array to a single folder, then copied all of the folders from the 80 GB disk over to the array with permissions and symlinks (minus the contents of /proc and /sys, which I created empty).

These are the commands I used:

Quote:

p -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /b*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /d*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /e*
cp -a -d -R -v -t /media/raid_array /h*

[Code]....

I tried to change fstab to use the 689a... for root, but when I try to boot, it's still trying to open /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d...

So then I booted from the single disk again and chrooted into the array, then ran update-initramfs -u. I got 3 "grep: /proc/modules: No such file or directory" errors, and "cat: /proc/cmdline: No such file or directory"- so I created directory /proc/modules, created an empty file /proc/cmdline, and ran the initramfs update again. Then I tried to shut down, which hung (probably because I was doing all of this from a terminal window in Gnome), so I killed the power after a couple of minutes.

It's still trying to use /dev/disk/by-uuid/412d... to boot.

What am I missing? I assume I just have to change the UUID to mount as root, but I don't know how.

Debian Hardware :: Asus Wireless Pce-n15 Not Working

It didn't work however so I plugged in my ethernet cable and continued the install process hoping it would magically start working after that. No luck.

I went from an Arch Linux install with working wifi, and I dual-boot my box with Windows 7 with working wifi, so I know it's not the card or the distance from the router.

The system told me since a while, that a lot of the sectors of one disk of the (software) RAID compound are failed already. So tried to disconnect each of the disks and start them separately. Unfortunaltly this is not working (for one its is not working at all, the other wents the same far as with both), when I tried to recover the system with the Fedora DVD, it said no distribution found. I am quite new and do not know so much about linux system, so i do not know what further information you could need. Maybe it can be important, that both disks are encryped (the system wents so far, that I can type in the password).
