I'm running Mint, and my system time has moved forward yet. I've tried manually changing the time, but it changes back after reboots.How can I get the time to change, whether through corrected DST rules, or just a manual time change?

i have a computer with 3 users on it, and a folder using samba that everyone on the network has access to. Lets say that, the folder is stored in /etc/sharedfolder. What happens is, when user1 puts a folder in it, then logs off, user 2 attempts to modify it and fails, because permission is set to 755, and they are not in the same group. (even if they were, it should still need to be 775) Anyway, my current solution is, every 5 minutes a crontab changes permission like so: chmod 777 -R /etc/sharedfiles && chown useradmin:superadmin -R /etc/sharedfiles Which works, but seeing as there is getting close to a gig in there, this is a bad solution, as it eats up the computers resources. Solutions that i think might work:
1) create a script that only changes permissions that need be changed.
2) change file permission settings to force all documents to inherit parent document settings

View 14 Replies View RelatedI have a triboot windows suse 11.3 stable and suse 11.3 factory pc, I would like to share the browsers and email settings between the suse stable and factory, I succeed with thunderbird and firefox moving the /home/.thunderbird and /home/.mozilla in an ext3 shared partition and linking these in the respecive /homes, I found that there isn't a /home/.chromium folder, I found probably /usr/lib64/chromium could be the same as /home/.mozilla for firefox, but I don't know if is secure or can damage my system to move this in a ext3 partition and then link this to the respective /usr/lib64/chromium, /usr/lib64/chromium has root owner, root group, visible and modifiable for root and only visible for group and other.

I am using gpointing-device-settings as a program to get the scroll bar on my touch pad working. unfortunately, I can't get the settings to stick after i shutdown and turn on. I have to go into the program and unclick then reclick the button. i'm using version 1.3.2 (ive tried both deb and source versions). does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? and if there is any configure files that I could configure instead of having to use the gui program.

When creating their account, I have turned off the 'Connect to ethernet and wireless' option of the Advanced Settings.
However, when I log into their accounts, they still have full access to the internet through both the wireless and ethernet connections. Is this option for some other purpose?
Is there an alternate way to limit internet access for childrens' accounts in Ubuntu? (I'm used to MS Family Safety as a filter for internet access - is there an eqivalent for Ubuntu?)
I have noticed something: If I use scp to copy a large file from my ssh server, or I use ssh -ND to tunnel a port from my client through my ssh server, my connections show up in /var/log/auth.log on the server, but issuing the "w" or "who" command does not show any of the users who are transferring files via scp or using ssh -ND.
I need to know when my users are logged in (even if they're just using scp or ssh -ND) on my server so that I know when rebooting may disconnect them. The only way I know of to do this is to actually manually read /var/log/auth.log or to do "netstat -an | grep #SSHPORTNUMBER" but I don't like either of these methods. I want to be able to see (as the "w" or "who" command does for normal ssh connections) a list of all logged-in users INCLUDING those logged in using scp or ssh -ND.
I'm desperately trying to activate the autoscroll-function in firefox, but firefox just wont let me. When using the "normal" settings dialog, autoscroll is immediatly deactivated again after activating it. Why? In about:config,n't change the value of general.autoscroll. So fast boxee is up and running before there is networking. The fast boot time is great. But I'd rather have a network connection before boxee is started.I could write a bash script that checks if there is a connection and then launch boxee accordingly.

I have set my Ubuntu 10.04 box with our Windows domain. I can see from "net ads info" that I am on the domain. I can also get the password and group info with getent.So far so good. After doing some research, I found this is related to MYSQL and server services which I am in no need of running and nor do I want to run if not needed. So exactly what are these services used for, which app is creating this and why?
Is it possible to remove the app or processes if they are not needed? Killing these connections every time they attempt to establish would be rhetorical.

I tried to follow the instructions from Broadcom http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt and it started showing the driver in admin - drivers, it shows that it is activated but not in use, but once I get to this point

When i run my iptables script using fw builder (=installed on my router/server) everything works fine...until i reboot (nomather "test run" is active or not) to counter this problem i'm using the 'iptables-restore' in the "interfaces" file. upon reboot a "iptables -L" confirms me the correct rules are loaded.
However... tests (eg ping test from an ethx interface) to the outside indicate the script does not seem to be working. upon installing the script with fwbuilder this works again fine....i see no difference in the route table nor do i seen anything suspicious in the syslog. restarting the "network" does not solve anything either

I just replaced my RAM, and searched for the best way to do a memory test in Ubuntu. I ran across this page:

So I did exactly that. The GRUB menu appeared, but I had no keyboard control, and thus couldn't select anything. I've tried rebooting several times with different keyboards, and they all show 3 green lights at the very beginning of boot, but become unavailable by the time GRUB appears.
So I booted to a Live CD and the keyboard worked just fine inside that session. But it's still gone during boot. When I'm booting without a CD in the drive (booting to the internal HD as usual), it goes straight to the GRUB list, with no keyboard control, and I'm stuck indefinitely.
how to either bypass this stuck GRUB screen, or somehow restore normal keyboard functionality during early boot?
