Ubuntu :: Custom Command On System Idle?

Mar 22, 2010

I was messing around with Compiz today and it got me to wondering if I can create a custom command when my system goes to idle, instead of launching the screen saver. I want to start the Compiz Rain effect on system idle. is this possible?

I can start/stop it with origami, but I need to know how to run the start/stop commands when the user becomes idle or active.Or, if I can tell if any user logged in with KDM (since I don't want ssh to stop f@h) is active from a script, I can write one that will do all I need.I can edit sudoers if the commands have to be run as the user. There's only one user I'm worried about making happy (it's the one everyone in the family shares)

Debian :: Load On Idle System

Nov 2, 2015

I had noticed that my workstation (running debian testing) is having a constant load of about 0.9 (+/-0.1), even while the system is completly idle. The system starts with a normal load and then goes up to about 0.9 within a few minutes and then will stay there forever (well it can get higher, but never lower). This is the load graph after the system runs some time: URL....

I have tried everything I know to find the cultprint but there is no cpu usage and no io usage. I even have disabled the desktop and still have this problem. Also I have tried booting an older Kernel (4.1 and 3.16) with no difference in the load. Here is some information about my system:

Code: Select all» uname -a
Linux localhorst 4.2.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 4.2.3-2 (2015-10-14) x86_64 GNU/Linux.

Debian Configuration :: Periodic Disk Activity With System Being Idle

Jan 12, 2011

I keep noticing disk activity every roughly 1 to 3 seconds even though there is "nothing" going on. Of course, I run a number of "system" and "user" application packages - Apache2, MySQL, Browsers (Opera, IceWeasel), an SMB client and server, OpenOffice 3.0RC8 being the most prominent ones. I wonder what might be the cause for this constant disk activity which happens even when none of the applications do any noticeable work at all. Is there a way to determine the process that does those disk read/writes?

Software :: Gnome Screen-saver Does Not Turn On When System Is Idle - FC-11

Dec 1, 2009

My Gnome screensaver doesn't work, although it once did.

I have searched for a solution to this problem but no luck. I am running FC 11 and out-of-the-box gnome. At first the screensaver worked normally, shutting off the screen after 5 mins. Now it does not do so. I found the following command line suggestion in the forums, and it looks like it may point to a problem -- the screensaver is inactive, but how to make it active? I may be misunderstanding the term inactive, of course. Logically, the screensaver would have to be inactive if I am typing a command.

In any case, the query command shows:

Just in case the screensaver really was not running, I tried this command (which I found in another post):

But the query returns the same thing as before.

The only thing I can think of that might be an issue is that using the "appearances" background facility I added a couple dozen pictures that I thought I might use as screen background. Not long after that I discovered that my screen did not go black after 5 mins as expected. Not sure this correlation has any causal meaning, however. I then tried various things, finally returning to the plain (blue) default. That seemed to fix it for a short while, then after a couple of days, the bad or non-behavior returned -- the screensaver does not work.

(update -- I removed all the extra background pics and it makes no difference.)

My system runs all the time, but I don't want the screen to be on all the time.

Ubuntu :: Audacious 2.4.0 (Open With) Any Custom Command?

Oct 9, 2010

I recently managed to compile and install audacious 2.4.0 successfully. I prefer to browse my music folders and double click on the song I wish to play rather than use "open files" within audacious. It works fine to open the first mp3 but when I click to play another song instead of stopping the first one, it opens another instance of audacious and now both songs are playing. When I go into the properties of an mp3 and select open with > "other application" > audacious then click "Use a custom command" the following is in the box /usr/local/bin/audacious %f. is there any custom command I could use so that when I click another song audacious stops the currently playing song and plays the new one, without opening another instance?

Ubuntu :: Creating Custom Command/menu Launcher?

Sep 20, 2010

I had a problem with viewing webcams on Skype, and after searching I found out that running Skype through the terminal with this command "export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 && skype" makes the webcams work perfectly. What I wanted to do was to integrate this command into the main menu so that I won't have to type it into the terminal (and thus keep the terminal open all the session) every time I want to use Skype. So I edited the command of the Skype button in the Applications menu and put that line instead of "skype", but it gives me "Failed to execute child process "export" (No such file or directory)". I tried editing .bashrc and added the following line:

alias skp='export XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 && skype'

Now the command 'skp' works through the terminal, but it gives me the same error message when I put it into the command line of the applications menu.

If there isn't one, then a (basically) equivalent solution for me would be to map some of the symbols I need (ex: Δx,Σ,ect.) to ctrl-/,ctrl-., ect. through keyboard shortcuts. The problem I run into here is that I do not know of any commands that paste a specific symbol into the focused text input area. Does anyone know of one?

General :: Custom Xen Shutdown Command Fails?

Dec 26, 2010

I have a custom command I've made to quickly shut down all of my xen instances.

Code:

[root@LCENT02 ~]# virtdown
-bash: syntax error near unexpected token `2'

As you can see it fails when I try to run it on the command line. It is stored in an ~/.env file in my home directory. What is odd to me is if I open the .env file and copy the command from there and paste it into the command line, it does actually work!

Code:

[root@LCENT02 ~]# for i in `virsh list | grep -v -e Id -e --- -e Domain-0 | awk '{print $1}'`; do virsh shutdown $i; done
Domain 1 is being shutdown
Domain 2 is being shutdown
Domain 3 is being shutdown

And this is how I have the command entered into my .env file:

Code:

alias virtdown="for i in `virsh list | grep -v -e Id -e --- -e Domain-0 | awk '{print $1}'`; do virsh shutdown $i; done

Why would this command work if you paste it onto the command line but not use the custom command virtdown?

Ubuntu :: Can I Create An ISO Of My Own Custom System Install

Jul 14, 2010

After much playing around and with help from various forums including this one, I finally created a very fast simple minimal (to me at least) linux OS.

I started with the the ubuntu command line system install, then proceeded to install the rest of the goodies that I needed and nothing more.

I can honestly say it was a great learning experience and also very gratifying to create an OS that only has what one wants and looks the way one wants.

With all that nice stuff being said, my next goal, and I don't know if it's possible, is to take my newly created OS and create an ISO of it from my HD so I can put in my wifes computer as well without having to go through all the steps it took to get to the final product?

I tried to do some research on the topic but I think I was wording it wrong or not correct as i couldn't find anything concrete on the subject.

If not, such is life and I will just have to do it all over again and hopefully remember all the steps and customizing I did.
