while doing FTP through command prompt, connections times out after some time remaining idle, but doing ftp through browser, connection doesn't time out after some time remaining idle... why is it so?

I'm currently studying for my Linux+ test and I'm getting conflicting information regarding the rm -rf command. Yes, I know this a dangerous command, but my question is in regard to how the command functions. In one book I'm studying it says that rm -rf / home/myfolder (there's a space in there) will delete the entire root directory because there is a space between the root and home directory. It says that if there is a spacing such as this, it will ignore anything after the space, so in this case, it would delete the root directory and stop, not that there would be anything left anyway. Then in another book I have, it says that if you did a rm -rf folderName / (with the intention of adding the trailing slash to indicate it is a directory and not a folder) it will delete everything in folderName (assuming it's a child directory of your pwd) and then CONTINUE on and delete the root directory. Now, those two statements contradict each other. When you remove a directory, does the command line ignore anything after a space or not?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a strange problem where my machine will suddenly stop responding to connections while still remaining partially connectible. Here's an example sequence of events I have taken (numerous times). If anyone can spot something else I should check or has seen these symptoms before please let me know.1) System is using an Edimax 7318-usg, Ubuntu 10.042) Wifi connection is working, with power management turned off (iwconfig)3) Signal strength does not cause the connection to drop (confirmed with router logs)4) When in a ssh session on the problem machine suddenly the ssh session is dropped "host is down"5) When I attempt to re-initiate ssh it fails, no route to host...6) Pinging it fails, accessing a webpage hosted on it fails, all access fails7) The machine I'm pinging/sshing from still has a good network connection8 ) I check my routers DHCP leases, problem machine still has a valid lease.
9) Router still shows problem machine in routing & arp table & shows active traffic going to and from (I checked the routers states and bandwidth monitor for this)10) I try sshing and pinging the problem machine from the laptop on the local network, it still fails, no route to host, wtf?11) I go to the problem machine physically, wifi connection is up with decent signal12) ifconfig indicates it still holds an IP address13) I open a browser on the problem machine, any webpage loads fine14) I ping the laptop from the problem machine, ok15) I ssh from the problem machine to my laptop, it works16) At this point I ssh from the laptop to the problem machine, sometimes it works sometimes it fails(it seems that pinging/sshing the laptop FROM the problem machine sometimes makes it connectable again).
17) Usually if I wait a while the problem machine will randomly become connectable again at random intervals18 ) The only reliable way to make the problem machine connectable again is manually reconnecting it to the wireless network19) I tailed auth.log ufw.log, etc. nothing suspicious disallowing my ssh connection20) dmesg shows nothing unusual, as far as I can tell, just some activity negotiating WPA keys and suchBy looking at the timestamp for the WPA negotiation and cross referencing the router bandwidth monitor I can tell the WPAnegotiation doesn't make it drop the conectionSo that's it, lol.
I want to get the system idle time till a mouse move or a key press. How is it possible to get it from a char terminal running through ssh/telnet as well as a from an X-terminal session?
I have an Asus EEE PC900. Just installed 10.04 netbook remix and everything works fine straight out of the box. it works great and is a vast improvement on windows xp which was previously installed on the asus. Just one small thing - the battery meter is never accurate as far as time remaining goes - it currently says i have 19 hours 55 minutes to go - unfortunately this is not quite true i suspect. It was the same with 9.10, Does anyone have a solution for this?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI've just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and find that if I leave the machine for more than a couple minutes, it will automatically log me out. Instructions at other sites have indicated that session controls are to be found in System>Properties. But there is no Session in the list under Properties in Ubuntu 10.04. How can I control this feature so that I'm not having to constantly login every time I turn around? I've searched everywhere and can't find a solution.

All the timers are mapped to one function handler. The problem is if the timer expires one at a time, the function handler called at a time. But if the 2 timers expires at a time, the function handler is called one time only instead 2 times. Is it possible to invoke the function handler as many times based on timer expirary happens simultaneoulsy?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI am noticing really odd behaviour after upgrading from 8.10 to 9.10 (via 9.04). My server frequently becomes unreachable. I am using it as an application server, running Apache, JBoss and MySql. Once the server goes idle, all web connections time out. SSH also times out. Usually the server wakes up on second SSH attempt and then everything: Web, SSH etc seems to run fine.
This is a server machine with no GUI. Can anyone point me to power management or other such settings I can tune from commandline? I have disabled power management by adding kernel parameter acpi=off. I still have the problem. The first network connection after the machine has gone idle takes a long time. All later connections run pretty smoothly.
I'm running Red Hat Linux 5.4 on HP DL580 server with 16 processors and 64 GB of RAM. I'm connecting to the server remotely through SSH. after entering the password, it takes time to return the command line, if I click ctrl+c during this time, I'll have the command line prompt but not the correct bash prompt (I have to run bash to pass to my correct prompt).I tried to install Apache on the server, ./configure took 4 hours to finish instead of 1 or two minutes, Oracle installation same behavior. Server Disks are mirrored using RAID controller.
View 6 Replies View RelatedWhen I run top d 0.5 on my machine and I press 1 to enable the SMP View, I notice that all of the CPUs keep toggling between 100%idle and 0% idle.
The odd part is that when a CPU goes to 0.0% idle, I would expect to see one or more of the other columns peek, but they are not.
What is causing this?

how can i change sleep idle time in fedora
After some idle time Slackware hangs up/freezes. When, for an example, i turn on music i can hear it on idle time but after some time music still plays but i'm losing picture (monitor detects no signal), num lock is locked, led on keyboard are turned on but won't turn off while pressing num lock. I've switched off power saving options in Slackware and on bios setup.
My spec is:
X4 620 (without overclocking)
AMD 760G (Radeon HD 3000)
Catalyst 11.5 for Radeon graphic.
BTW - computer works fine with Windows. Also, with Slackware i can work for an hours, many hours and everything is fine but as soon as i leave it for some amount of time = it hangs/freezes. There is something wrong with hibernation. Not always computern is turned off correctly. TV is switched off, slackware logged off but i hear drives working and cooler fans. It should be switched off completly.
After contracting malware on Vista i decided to switch over to Linux and chose to start of with Ubuntu because of the graphical interface. that being said, you have no doubt inferred that i have no coding experience. basically i was hoping to find some nice tutorials and sites for Ubuntu. Also, i did downloaded the suggested programs and patches but im still experiencing problems with Adobe,flash, and and opening .exe files. for the latter, when i click on .exe files it is equivalent of using explorer on windows so i was wondering how to use the command prompt to open them. supposedly linux is susceptible to malware so if you could please suggest a anti -malware program.

The idea is that I would be able to type a reasonably long command on one line without it wrapping to the next line so quickly.
The command export is working inside a shell script, but when I type it at the command prompt / terminal it doesn't work. "export: The command not found" error is displayed instead.
I tried this:

I am trying to access another partition on my drive through the command prompt. I have tried to access it through the /dev directory but when I input "cd ./sda1" or "cd /sda1" it says no such file or directory.

I'm trying to run an application from the command prompt. I've set the path in .bashrc. My executable file and all other files needed by it are saved in the same directory as the path. When I enter the executable name to run it, I get an error message saying that the command is not found.
