Ubuntu :: Copying Karmic's 'Home' Folder Into Lucid?
Jun 23, 2010I did it on a friend's desktop and it worked a treat. All her settings, passwords etc... remained.
Is there any catch to doing this or is it that easy?

Jan 8, 2011I'm not positive if this is in the correct section but I am hoping so. I am running dual-boot with Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. I hunted down my files from Windows that I need for school (old papers, research, etc.) and found it under "file system" --> "host" --> "users" --> "zbollman". I can access all of my files and I'm happy now that I don't have to boot between the two constantly to get what I need. However, I tried to copy the file to my home folder, but it said I do not have enough room. I'm about 5GB short. How do I go about allocating more space so that I can copy this folder so that all of my information is easily accessible?

I have an empty 1TB drive in my Karmic box currently formatted as one NTFS partition and I was thinking of mounting that drive in the Karmic /home folder.
Will Karmic be all right using an NTFS partition as the /home folder?

Jun 9, 2010I am planning to move to Lucid from Karmic now that I am out of university for the summer and have time. I have heard that there is a way to copy your home folder over to the next release and all of the data and program settings will remain intact. I have tried some research on the subject but everything I have found has been extremely confusing. I want to do a fresh install (as my updater has been failing time and time again and asking for partial upgrades etc). Instead of creating a new partition for the home folder, would it be possible to move it to an external drive and copy it back over (I have tried to copy it to the external but I get some errors even in sudo)?

May 10, 2010After a powerdown during my upgrade of Ubuntu 9.10 to Ubuntu 10.04 that rendered my operating system useless I can get to my /home folder. The /home folder is locked and can not be copied or read. This means I can't reinstall my stuff and keep my files. The rest of my data (except for the /root folder) seams to be unlocked. How can I get to my /home folder? Does anyone know how to unlock it?

I have my system upgraded from Karmic 9.04 (automatic distro upgraded), but I have too many problems with this upgrade, (nvidia video card not working properly, I can't mount my mp3 player (sansa), and another issues with sounds, etc.) Since I have a separate /home partition, and separate / partition, I would like to do a fresh install of lucid on my first partition (/dev/sda1), thinking of maybe it will fix all my problems with a fresh install from a Lucid CD,
My questions are:
1. If I do a fresh install on /, will I be able to access my home folder on the extended partition?.
2. If I do a fresh install on /, the Lucid installer will recognise my /home partition, or will install everything again?. (meaning another home folder), I don't want 2 home folder,
3. Am I going to have a permission problems between the fresh install and all my stuff in /home partition?

Jul 2, 2010Is there a way to recreate all the folders from one directory to another without copying over the contents of the folder? I've been trying to do something like this,

Sep 22, 2010I have a dual-boot macbook with an OS X partition and an ubuntu partition. When I first installed ubuntu, I changed my home folder to my OS X home directory to synchronize all my files from both. My home directory is now /media/sda2/Users/username/. In a regular home folder, the icons for Documents, Music, Pictures, Movies, etc. are different (not just with emblems, but actually different icons). But when I changed my home folder, these subfolders' icons stayed the same as regular folder icons and I can't figure out a way to change that default setting. I know how to change the icons for each folder manually, but these changes don't appear everywhere (i.e. nautilus, places, etc). Furthermore, every time I change my icon theme, I would have to manually reassign icons for these folders. Is there a way to globally change the folder icons for these folders?

Feb 7, 2011I tried to use cp -r from root to copy the contents of /home to a different partition, but nothing got moved.
Here is my situation: I am maintaining a "public" (family) computer. On this computer I have a separate partition called "Family" that is a samba share for everyone on the network. Also on this computer I have the default /home directory.
Ideally, all files should be saved on the "family" share. The problem is that the home directory is called "family" (because the user is "family") and the share is also "family." That's a little too confusing for everyone.
So I'd like to copy everything to the share, and set that as the new home directory, so that all files by default are saved on the share, and can be accessed by everyone on our network.
What happened is that I first tried to set up the share as the home directory by following an ibm tutorial [URL]. Just after pressing enter on "cp -ax", I realized that the -ax might mean I was going to lose all the files in the current destination. The file transfer process took forever (keeping me biting my nails to see if I had really lost everything in the drive), but in the end the screen went blank, and the HD light stopped blinking, so I restarted, and everything was there. Completely unchanged, and not copied, either.
So I went back and copied it with cp -r. Same thing. Took a few minutes, but when all was said and done, nothing was changed.
Ubuntu :: Delete Remaster Folder From Home Folder?
Jun 13, 2011I have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

Apr 15, 2010I am getting ready to upgrade from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9,04 (I am a bit behind, I know). I just drag my home folder to a USB drive to back up and it should copy all the files (including hidden ones).
When I tried this, I get the error that Symbolic links cannot be created. Should I worry about this? Would this effect my backup in some fashion?

But here's what I'm actually looking for:My music player won't display album art without a "cover.jpg" image in each folder where the files are, but I have Rhythmbox set to only copy the top rated songs. Each file does have its cover embedded in it, but there's also a cover.jpg in each folder.
So I'd like to let Rhythmbox handle the actual song copying, and then have a script or something that I can run that will scan my onboard music directory for cover.jpg files and then place them in the appropriate folders within my music player's folders. Obviously I can't just copy my onboard music directory, or I'm getting *every* song, not just the top-rated, which defeats the purpose of syncing at all.

Sadly it seems that even with kdm and plasma-desktop packages installed, I run into a problem at login.If I choose from the downwards facing arrow on the botttom left of the screen, and pick "KDE".Then when I log in, it shows the first icon (a hard disk), goes black and plunks me back on the login screen.This is a Karmic>Lucid upgrade process and I wonder if something got borked in the process.

Mar 28, 2011I do have an Ubuntu Headless server which is running Samba on it. My mp3 file collection resides on that server on is being share.
So far, no problems connecting to that drive and writing from my Windows box on that share. But if I use my main laptop, which runs Ubuntu Lucid and download an mp3 song from Amazon, the moment I move that to the share, I got permissions problems from the Windows machine. This is clearly a permission issue with group and others; the song is being created on the share without read and write permissions to others or the samba group I created.
My question is. How can I make this process simple or automatic, when moving songs to the share? I don't want to go there everytime and run ...

Ubuntu Installation :: Upgrade To Lucid From Karmic
Apr 30, 2010I'm currently upgrading my laptop, and it has completed the step "Getting new packages", and is now onto "Installing the upgrades".It says it is going to take another 2.5 hours, but I am leaving work soon and want to take the laptop with me. Is it safe to disconnect it from the internet at this point? I don't want to fudge up the install, but I don't want to have to leave my laptop at work all weekend (or have to come back and pick it up at some point).
