When installing the vmware tools it says to just hit enter and the default will be used.
Hitting enter just keeps giving me the error message- The path "usr/src/linux/include" is not an existing directory.

Jun 17, 2010I'd like to move a selection of files from all the sub-directories within an overall directory to a single destination. I don't want any of the directory structure, just the files themselves. This is what I tried so far:
mv /dir1/*/igs*.sp3.Z /dir2
There are other .sp3.Z files in the * directories within /dir1 but I just need the ones that start with igs..

Jul 8, 2010I was playing with the mysql my.cnf file yesterday, trying to move my database files to my dropbox folder so I can use the database on my other machine. All I changed was the datadir setting to point to my dropbox folder. I also moved my mysql data files there.
When I tried to restart mysql and test the new location it said my mysqld.sock was missing. I searched and searched the web and my filing system for it but I have no idea what's happened to it?? I have even tried changing the datadir path back and reinstalling mysql but that doesn't seem to work either.

Then (with a bit of assistance) wrote another bash script that deletes the files from the recycle bin. Now I need to write one that will restore the files preferably to their original location? I am very new to linux and stuggling with where to even begin...any ideas? There seems to be some advice about creating a cloning tree, but I've never heard of them?

Feb 20, 2011Is there a method at the command line to copy files from one location to another and retain the source files group and user?I'm migrating some MySQL files from one machine to another.I want to back-up the original files in the directory presently. They have owner:group of mysql, some have owner:group root:mysql and so on. To copy them under cli or Nautilus everything changes to root for I execute sudo cp or gksudo nautilus and copy via gui.
Since it is MySQL data I could simply do a dump of the database and restore it on the other machine. But there's about 20 db's and I want to do this via a copy for it will be faster - at least that is what I think.

General :: Convert MySQL For Windows Files?
Jul 10, 2010I had a Windows XP Home box setup with MySQL, Apache, bind9, phpBB. Then one evening while preparing a Linux replacement my Windows XP Home tower died. It completely croaked. It won't boot up past POST at all. No beep codes or anything! It just sits there with the power on like a brick. I cannot boot it to grab the database through the webserver with any web based MySQL script system. I also do not have another Windows box that I can install MySQL on.
There is no possible way I have to retrieve any MySQL databases that I had on it except by mounting the hard drive where MySQL stored the databases for Windows on it. I've Googled for hours on end trying to find a solution but to no avail. I tried simply copying the contents of the database as-is from where it was on Windows to where it would be on Linux but when I try to browse the phpBB forums I get this error:

Jan 4, 2011I am running VMware inside windows 7 64bit.I have installed ubuntu 2.8 ultimate edition on a 20gb partition and used 1gb of ram....everything is updated etc and running good. I checked in the VMware tools bar the entity tab,and says tools is not installed.
So when i run the install everything goes well untill it reaches the point where it says "What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel?
I have tried everything,different tutorials,installed a build package etc and it still asks for the directory. here is the uname r output :

Nov 20, 2010I recently forced a reset on my applications menu, this system has been updated since at least Intrepid all the way through to Maverick and so I have decided to start having a bit of a clean up. Having deleted my ~/.config/menus directory and logged out/in, I noticed that I now have a menu for 'Other' within my applications menu, there must be around 200 entries in there, detailing every app I have ever installed through wine (whether they are still installed or not) along with a few others (VMWare player for one example).
Where are the files located that the computer probes to regenerate this menu? I'd like to clear the list as much as possible as the same list gets in the way when choosing what program a file should be opened with (it's far easier to choose from a list of currently installed apps than a list of 300 or so possibly installed apps).
