I would like to know what the dots in /home/. and /media/home/. mean? Or to put it other way; will the command bellow copy my /home to /media/home (on different hard disk)?

ran out of space in my /home dir. Have a second hard drive to install and would like to designate it as additional space for /home. I do not want to mount it as a dir inside my home I would like it to simply work as though my /home simply has more space available to it.

Dont have much experience in opensuse. I just need to know the best way to do this. Also, can opensuse read/write NTFS? Also I have a printer on my moms machine that runs XP home. The printer is shared I would like to be able to print but its no biggie. It some type of HP 3 in 1. I just wnat it to print, I dont care about the scanner and stuff.

It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.

I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

I have two internal harddisk. Harddisk 1 has ubuntu, fedora installed and harddisk 2 has ubuntu installed. I normally connect either one, and use it. How can i always keep connect both harddisks, and at the start, select from which harddisk to boot? Or it's not possible?

Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254
Furthermore, there is a script: Storage-Fixup which can also be downloaded from opensuse software search. Indeed there is a report of this for a Vostro 1500: Gmane Loom
The report suggests looking at: Disk Power Management - openSUSE which lists a method to create a configuration file to management disk power management:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to resize a partition on an IDE hard disk to use the entire disk but can not get more than a 309GB partition. I can get 295, 300, 301, 302GB, etc... fine but start getting problems with anything over 309GB. I get the following error with 310GB or more:

Directory is not coping totally i tried 3 types, those are.
1. by rsync command to take backup
it was running in b/w that process is automatically killed.
2. by copy command
when i am trying with out recursion option ,it gives an error like directory is not copied.at that case i used -r option
this time also the process was killed in bitween.
3. i tried directly copy/paste process.
this process is just stopped and it didn't continue .
regularly ,i am using that rsync command.it worked fine .from 4 days i am facing this problem
at these three times ,when the process stopped ,the kernel failure window appears at right side bottom of the display
actually i want that backup of that directory regulerly.how can i take that.
If a user want secure coping of files through scp from one system to another system then how this can be done. This user have only been granted securing coping of files through another system but without ssh.

cp -irv /test/test1/.* /test as per the requirement but what i see in destinarion i.e, /test that no files or directory has been copied in /test & the files/directories is also removed from source i.e, /test/test1

I often find myself working in environments that force MS Outlook down my throat. I know there must be others here who have dealt with this frustration, so I'm hoping to get a convenient workaround.My strategy so far has been to make an Outlook rule that immediately copies every email to a PST file (for export). This is the first rule that runs. The pst file is kept directly on network filespace, so the linux and windows sides can both get at it. On the linux side, a pst to mbox converter runs, and then emacs can access the mbox mail.
It all works, but it's cumbersome. The script must periodically move the PST file and immediately copy an empty PST file in its place. I would have appreciated it if Outlook would only handle the file when adding mail to it. The problem is, after I replace the file with an empty PST file, Outlook pukes, and even deactivates the rule for copying emails. So I must manually close Outlook, empty the PST file, then relaunch Outlook just to run the rule to copy email.Is there a way to use cygwin or something to launch outlook in the background, run outlook rules, and exit, every 10 minutes?
I am on F15 32-bit with GNOME 3. I keep getting "A Hard Disk Is Failing" warnings from the Disk Utility, very frequently. Is this a serious issue? Because I knew this to be a bug in Palimpsest DU back in F13/14. Also how can I disable any notifications from this application?

I have an existing install of 10.4 on a 320 GB hard drive without home in it's own partition. I have a new 500GB hard drive that I want to install 10.10 on. After installing 10.10 and making /Home on it's own partition can I copy the entire old home folder including the hidden files to the new home partition on the new hard drive so that all of my programs and files are saved. I don't have enough room left on the old hard drive to create and copy home to a new partition. Am I going about this the right way or do I need to rethink and do some kind of backup restore on the new hard drive or some other way. I am trying to accomplish this so that in the future I can install a clean copy of Ubuntu when they are released without losing my current settings and files. I started out with 7.10 but my learning curve is slow.

The other is 1TB that I would like to use as /home/charlie and /home/prisca as well as some other partitions. Here is my current /etc/fstab

i have my /home folder located on a seperate HDD than my boot folder and the rest of the OS. Lately i been getting an errror screen when i boot up. is says some errors where found on my disk where my /home folder is located. then from there i am givwen the option to hit I to ignore, S to skip or M to manually mess with it. the only way for me to get around this is usually just to a hard restart and it boots up fine. but i dont understand what errors are being found on the HDD so i can render this situation.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm sure that this is posted somewhere but I have not been able to find the right search terms. I have a Dell Vostro 1700 which has 2 physical hard drives. I installed Natty to the 1st drive and during the install I used the entire 2nd drive as /home. I would like to upgrade the 2nd drive to a larger faster drive. I have the new drive in a USB enclosure so that I can access both drives. I'm pretty sure I need to boot from the CD to do this. Then I need to copy all files unmount the small drive then shut down, install the larger drive and have the system recognize it as /home. I am just starting to creep out of N00B stage and don't want to screw this up.
