Ubuntu :: Constant Screen Crashes In 11.04?
May 1, 2011
here's the videos video of the error in action
i just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04 and am using the "classic" gnome 2 interface. i have an ati card, currently powered by the standard fglrx drivers. something must be wrong with compositing, because when i mouse over avant window navigator, indicators, menus, drag files, etc, there is a good (but still random) chance of it breaking my display.
just for the record, i have tried this with the newest catalyst drivers from the official website, the fglrx drivers from the repository and without any fglrx drivers at all. i am running a patched version of emerald that works with the included compiz, but i still get the same crashes with metacity's window decorator and without avant window navigator. indicator menus will just crash the screen from gnome-panel.
i had also gotten this same problem in a previous natty install using unity.
edit: hmm, disabling compiz seems to keep the crashes at bay, so i think this is a (major) compiz bug. does anyone know which logs i should include in my bug report?

I'm on a MacBook Pro 2,2 with Ubuntu 10.04. Multiple times Ubuntu freezes up and then crashes. I'm not entirely sure what is causing these crashes, but they happen mostly when I'm running anything graphics related, especially games. Although the crashes haven't been isolated to those instances. Any ideas on what could be causing this?

I recently wiped and partitioned my hard drive on my Sony Vaio Z series laptop. I set up the NTFS partition for windows, the Ext-4 partition for Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook Remix, and a large NTFS partition for my all my media. I installed the netbook remix off of a flash drive, and I couldn't have asked for a smoother install. Everything went fine, and I proceeding to install google chrome and all the other little goodies. After that, I configured all my settings and ran the update manager to get everything just fine. After a reboot, I became frustrated and prevented maximus from running on start up because I did not want every windows I opened to be maximized. After a reboot, the screen would flash very brightly more than once per second. I could see the top bar with the processes and such as well as the correct background, but I cannot do anything because the screen will not stop flashing. I figured out I could stop it from flashing by pressing ctrl+alt+F7, but the screen just freezes where it is at and is still unusable. Desperate to start enjoying my Ubuntu Netbook Remix, I wiped the Ubuntu partition and reinstalled and did everything EXACTLY the same except instead of preventing maximus from opening, I used gconf-editor to change the setting to not maximize everything by default. Reboot, exact same problem.
I've searched everywhere for a solution, but I only find people with vague similarities or explanations. Could it possibly be a graphics problem? My laptop has 2 graphics cards in it - an Intel integrated one and an nVidia one. The nVidia one has a hardware issue so I just use the Intel one for now. It is also worth noting that I have installed Ubuntu 10.04 (desktop) on my machine before and I never had any such problem.
Also, I tried booting up in the "safe mode" equivalent, but I eventually encounter a black screen and I am forced to hold down the power button to shut it down.
(also, if it's worth anything, I know how to use windows well if there's any way I can change something in Ubuntu from my windows installation)

When i startx, the resolution of the kde is 1280 - that's awful, for my monitor it needs to be 1152x864, so everytime i startx my slackware i have to go to system settings and set the proper resolution...
What should i do in order to set one resolution-size so it will keep it that until i changed it, and everytime i start the X i will be that type of resolution ?

When attempting to boot into Ubuntu 10.04, the screen constantly flickers. It'll stay off for about 2-3 seconds, then come back on for <1 second. This constantly occurs. When reaching the main screen (I think), I attempt to move into a TTY terminal, but the flicker continues. I have attempted to reset the X Server, stop the X server, etc., issue remains. The monitor does not turn off during this flickering. I am able to type, obviously.
Here are my system specs:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual (6000+)
2.00 GB RAM
ATI Radeon HD2600 XT (x2, Crossfire)
HP w2207h 22" Monitor, connected via HDMI
I also have VGA inputs on the back of the monitor and can attempt to switch the input, but that requires me to dig through a box looking for a cable, so I figured I'd post this issue first.

My computer keeps having some kind of meltdown. i really cant explain it other than the screen will go black, and then it will start flashing like white bars, or different colored bars. this happens at such random times i cant exactly pinpoint what sets it off.
the only thing i may have a clue to is that in my update manager, there is one thing that is a distribution update that i cant check to have it installed or anything like that. its then "Gij" and its description is it is "the gnu java bytecode interpreter" i just dont know if i should just go back to an earlier form of ubuntu because these problems didnt start happening until i upgraded to the new ubuntu

Whenever I try to run something that goes full-screen, the display crashes (a bunch of random vertical colored lines) and the only thing I can do it press the power button and reboot. Anything I can do to fix that? (I know my profile says 8.10 Intrepid; I'm working on a friend's comp, which has 9.10 Karmic.)

I upgraded 10.04 to 10.10 (32bit), the upgrade process didn't go that well because first it didn't boot beyond GRUB. Solved this by unplugging my keyboard (my ubuntu is a server machine without keyboard or mouse, I like to use the desktop version through vnc). After that is booted to shell, which was not so nice either. This time it was the legendary nouveau driver which sorry for my language I will never install again (caused major problem twice already). Installed nvidia drivers and got a display for X this time and it booted nicely to login screen.
My problems have arised since the upgrade, the system will randomly "crash" and go straight to login screen, ending my current session. Sometimes my mouse cursor even changes to the X-mark. I can't see anything in gdm, x11, syslog etc. that would explain the crash. So far I've found best log from .xsession-errors which is here:
[Code]...
I got a lot IPv6 errors on the same log too, but those were caused by utorrent+too old wine. Didn't remember that upgrade deletes/disables extra-repos and I was running the stable wine (1.2.1) instead of the latest one (1.3.7). Upgrading wine solved the error from utorrent IPv6 connections.
So any ideas what I could do to fix these crashes? I'm not so much into clean re-install because of all the configuration I'll need to do then. I do have home on a separate partition but there's lots of software to install and configure.

I saw some pictures of Kubuntu online and thought it looked awesome. I installed it from Gnome using the command "sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop". It installed fine, no errors. I logged off and picked Plasma Workspace or whatever its called from the menu and it showed a black screen for about 7 seconds, then showed a clear bar with a hard drive icon fading in. Then it crashed back to the login screen. I rebooted and tried again: same thing. I installed xfce and it works perfectly. Gnome still works. Ditto for Unity. But kde keeps crashing. PS: Graphics card is an ATI Radeon.

This is a very serious problem for i am a student who types alot of essays and needs a reliable computer.

I have had Natty installed for sometime now, and this happened once or twice before where it crashes all of a sudden to a black screen with some text on it, but I don't think there is anything particularly useful in the text. The problem is, in the last couple of days this has happened quite a few times, which shows that something is wrong.
My Computer's Specs:
CPU: AMD Phenom X6 1090T 3.2 GHz
RAM: 8 GB

I'm running a dual boot Win7 and Ubuntu 10.04. I have them both partitioned on a 1TB drive and I also have 2 250gb internal hd's hooked up. So starting maybe yesterday, I was noticing that Win7 started crashing for absolutely no reason whatsoever where it freezes and the mouse and keyboard are unresponsive. Today I did a system restore because I was tinkering in the registry so I thought that could have been the issue. Crashed once since. But runs longer. I also checked the event log and doesn't divulge anything explaining the system crash.
And just now, I tried booting up Ubuntu and after grub, the purple splash screen flickers back and forth to the text based terminal startup. All I could make out once was "could not read partition table." that was really the only significant thing I could make out. It flickers too quickly for me to really catch what its saying.

Not only does it crash, but I have to do a full roboot. Alt F2 doesnt work, and I can't escape it. I'm more or less stuck in a black screen.

At random times, natty crashes for no obvious reason. The desktop will freeze for about 3 seconds, and then everything goes black. But it seems that everything is still running, because I was able to hit ctrl-Alt-f1 and it worked. This has happened ever since I upgraded to natty yesterday, but is becoming more frequent

Got a new Lenovo T500, slapped 9.10 on it. Set of programmes is exactly as on my previous IBM T42, but every so often I get a random crash. No errors, just a complete freeze with a "underscore" cursor in the top-left of the screen.I think / suspect it may have something to do with Transmission running, or perhaps the recent kernel update to 2.6.31-17.Anyone else had anything similar? Maybe on a T400 or R60 / R61 / T60 / T61?

After upgrading my netbook (Eee 1005HA) from Ubuntu Lucid to Maverick, I can log in okay, but it crashes back to the login screen a couple of minutes after logging in, after the desktop has loaded. I haven't been able to find anything in syslog/dmesg/etc. about why this is happening, but it isn't happening on my other laptop which I just upgraded to Maverick as well.
Edit: memtest86+ showed no errors and the live USB desktop works fine.

It has been a few days I'm struggling to install Kubuntu 10.10 on my computer. I started with the normal CD, burnt it and boot the computer. Halfway through the graphical installer, I got a black screen and system froze up. I tried several things (including running the installer with nomodest and single options) but didn't help.
Then I downloaded the alternate CD and started to install in the text mode. I could get passed installing the kernel and programs but right after adding a user/password, the text installer crashed with a black screen and system froze!
Now, I already have Windows 7 64 bits on this computer and have done all kinds of memory/hardware tests on it and it works fine. The CPU, GPU and the case is well ventilated so nothing is overheating. I also run heavy loads on Windows (MATLAB, Chess engine tournaments) for hours and hours and never had a crash. So I guess the hardware is fine.
Here are the specs of the system if it can help:
CPU: i7 950 GPU: ATI HD5870 (model Gigabyte GV-R587UD-1GD) RAM: 12 GB DDR-1666 Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) Optical drive: Liteon ihbs112 USB Mouse and Keyboard
Windows is installed on a SSD and I have 2x 2.0TB hard disks for data. Kubunto, however was being installed on a separate and dedicated 200GB hard disk. During installation process I format and partition this drive. I didn't disconnect/disable the other drives. In BIOS, all SATA controllers are set to run in AHCI mode.
My primary suspect is the graphics card. However, why it would ever crash even in the text mode? Although it works fine in Windows even with heavy gaming so graphics card is itself stable.

I played a bit with plasma widgets and every once in a while everything crashes, I see only black screen and have to restart. After restarting everything worked normal. I found some tutorials for opensuse, and started with some basic shortcuts, such as showing active windows and activities. Then I had black screen again (which I've come accustomed to) and restarted pc expecting everything will be just fine like it was after previous reboots.
But then I saw that all activities are identical and everything I worked on has been deleted. I found in activities window that I have 20 or more activities and I didn't know where they had come from. I am stuck and I didn't see any activity that will restore my desktops to original state, and in my searching through activities I also had a lot of black screens. I use opensuse 11.4 x64 and kde 4.6.

Do I need to add the backports to my sources.list first. Appreciate help in fixing this problem.

Did a quick search for these symptoms and couldn't find anything related. After upgrading to 10.04 I found that the computer (HP NC8000) now crashes frequently and at random intervals. It occurs sometimes after only a few minutes, other times after an hour or two. It happens while its in use, or while its idle, wether the screensaver is on or not, even if its locked and the lid closed. When I walk away and come back I find the screen has gone blank (except for the Mouse Pointer and a cursor in the top left) and the Caps Lock Light and Num Lock Light are flashing (signifying a crash)
I caught it while I was using it and watched as the screen suddenly went blank as described above. No errors or explanations or warning. A reboot restores order, but not for long. Some assistance with diagnosing this would be helpful. I suspect it could be ATI radeon 9600 mobility related, as with each passing version of ubuntu it seems to be more unstable

After update of adobe plugin to version 10.1.102.64 (10.1.r102) plugin crashes if I try to switch to full screen. Previous plugin (10.1.53.64) worked perfectly well. Anybody with the same problem? My system is System76 Gazelle, Ubuntu 8.04 with all latest updates, nvidia drivers.
Additional info:
1. Same effect in Google Chrome, which uses its own plugin 10.1.r103
2. Same effect (both in Firefox and Chrome) on Thinkpad T41 with ubuntu 8.04
I downgraded plugin to r53 for now, but it's not a good idea, last update fixed some security issues.

I have a java service that needs to be run in a gnu screen session so that I can -r into it to access it's interactive shell. I would like this to run at start-up. More importantly, it crashes frequently so I need the service to restart itself when it crashes. How do I go about doing this myself? My previous experience with shell scripting amounts to putting ./service in a file and marking it executable. This will be running on a FreeBSD server, but I might put it on a Linux server soon also. So any caveats on the differences would be useful information.
