Ubuntu :: Color Stripes On Screen During Boot Up?

Jun 25, 2010

I have a dell inspireon 1501 with Ubuntu 10.04 on it. Sometimes but not always when I boot up I will see colored stripes on the screen that don't go away. The only way to get rid of them is too close the lid of the laptop then open it up again. After I open the lid the stripes go away. Any way to get RID of the stripes?

Ubuntu Installation :: Black Screen W/ White Stripes ?

Jun 20, 2010

I 've recently installed UNR 10.04 Lucid Lynx in my old PC.

Specs:
CPU Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz
Mother ASRock P4i45GV R5.0
Chipset Intel 845GV w/ Intel Extreme Graphics (shared memory up to 64 / 256 MB -I don't really get which one-).

Nevertheless, when I start the Pc, Ubuntu loads and, when it's about to load the desktop, the screen turns black with white stripes and "turns itself on and off" (like when it receives no image). I don't really know if this is or not a graphic bug / problem, but it's quite strange, as I've used Ubuntu 8.10 and 9.10 before in that same Pc.

By the way, I get the same error with the normal Ubuntu Lucid. AND, I have a Win XP Professional SP2 installed (I've installed the Ubuntu afterwards, so I have the Grub as default bootloader).

Also, I get the same error when loading Ubuntu in LiveCD mode.

Ubuntu Installation :: Sparc Blade With Large Vertical Stripes On Screen?

Jun 29, 2011

I've got 10.04 installed on my Blade 1000 workstation. Installed 6.06 first and worked my way up as per other postings. See attached cookbooks I wrote. Framebuffer is Elite3D-lite, and I have done the afbinit install. Using Xorg w/ Gnome and other windowing software to eliminate the possibility it is Gnome. From what I understand, Ubuntu does not require a custom X11 conf file like OpenBSD.

Current screen output shows large vertical stripes, where the stripes overlay on top of the GNOME desktop. Inside the stripes are the prior boot screen output of Ubuntu 10.04. When the screen saver kicks in, the Gnome desktop disappears, but the blue 10.04 stays visible. Mouse cursor moves across the screen, under each stripe as it goes.

My knowledge of framebuffers is limited. Would this then imply that the framebuffer is not fully "refreshing"? The screen does not provide full width even though the correct OpenBoot monitor configuration is set. Haven't found any mention of this issue from other Ubuntu/Linuxes Sparc users. Attached the X11 log. Looking at the log, I suspect this will need a custom X11 config file.

Software :: Screen App / Retain BG / Color Background Color Gets Lost

Jul 6, 2009

I am using the screen app, and have set bce to on, and issued the following commands to set my background and foreground color: tput setab 4; clear; tput setaf 7; clear;

This temporarily sets everything properly on my screen. However, when I issue any commands that change or set their own background color (for example, when I issue an "ls" command with colorized output), the background color gets lost for any new output and I have to reissue the commands listed above in order to retrieve my background color.Ideally I'd like to keep my background color when issuing these commands, as it serves as a good way to remind me of what environment I am currently issuing commands in.

Debian Multimedia :: Unreadable Screen - Horizontal Stripes Displayed

May 10, 2015

It started many months ago on wheezy. Occationally I got horizontal stripes on my screen when I used my system for many hours switching from one application to an other. Now, after I installed Jessie this problem hasn't gone away, but got worse. Now I don't need to use my system for hours before I encounter this effect. Different parts of my screen get unreadable without any predictable pattern.

Friens of mine argued this might happen because of a broken RAM chip. I bought my Acer Extensa 5220 in 2008. I'm not sure if it's worth to search for new RAM fitting into this old notebook.

OpenSUSE Install :: Color Cyling When Booting?

Jul 21, 2010

I'm having an issue with opensuse not properly booting into the desktop. I'll try to give as many details as I can. First my system:Macbook Pro 5.5 (Summer 2009). This is an intel core 2 duo, 4 GB of ram and a geforce 9400M.I prepared the computer by using bootcamp to resize my hard disk (640GB WDC) and add a partition. I booted into the installer without any issues, apart from having no mouse support. I deleted the partition boot camp had created and added 3 partitions, 1 root parition, 1 home partition and swap. The rest of the installation process went well and I was soon greeted by the opensuse gnome desktop.

I proceeded to install the wireless drivers for my broadcom BCM4322. I tried both from source and from the Packman repository, and it seemed like it didn't work. This was because I could not remove the ssb module for the kernel due to it being used by ohci_hcd (I believe). I wrote a simple script that would unload those modules, load the "wl" module, and then load the other modules. This worked, and I had wireless.I proceeded to install the Nvidia proprietary drivers, making sure to set the proper options for the bootloader and kernel. This also worked.

After installing a bunch of other software (eagle, notify-osd, grooveshark, vmware workstation), I was able to use my system without any problems until last night. At that point I updated my system after a prompt for updates by opensuse, and now I can't boot into the desktop anymore. At the point when gdm/Xorg is started, where I would regularly see the nvidia logo. Now all I get is a series of colored screens. These cycle from black, to white, to red, green, blue. I also get a bunch of grayscale gradients. However, no desktop.I have attempted several things to rectify this problem, some of them with limited success:

- obviously nomodeset was set, and the nouveau driver blacklist, unless this was changed by the update
- failsafe mode -> this worked, but I don't want to run in failsafe.

Ubuntu :: Screen And Vim (256 Colors) Background Color Rendering?

Feb 18, 2010

I'm using xterm/screen/vim, and set them up to 256 color mode. Everything went well, except when background color for the theme I choose is not black.

Here's the theme I use in this example:[URL].. Here's the situation: as long as I only use vim, the background is well rendered, meaning everything is grey in vim background. But when I try this with screen, the background is back to black, and only the text get some kind of highlight with the background color. Here are the magical lines I added to screenrc:

Code:
term screen-256color
attrcolor b ".I"
# Tell screen how to set colors. AB = background, AF=foreground
termcapinfo xterm 'Co#256:AB=E[48;5;%dm:AF=E[38;5;%dm'
# Erase background with current bg color. Not needed if TERM=screen-256color
defbce "on"

Colors are well rendered in 256 color, I only have a problem with this background. Anyone knows how to 'fix' this?

So far, still cannot delete the problematic driver or boot up normally successfully.

Ubuntu Installation :: Booting - Screen Froze After The Splash Screen

Jul 21, 2010

I received the Ubuntu CD by mail the other day and tried to install a dual boot with it. I first tried it out by running from the CD and the first problem I had was the screen froze after the splash screen. So I lurked around for a bit and found out that I can press any key on the screen with the keyboard and person to get to a different screen. At this screen I entered "F6" and then entered "nomodeset", this allowed me to pass the splash screen.

Next, I got into Unbuntu but I found out that the keyboard and mouse weren't working, so I lurked again and found out that I have to enter "noacpi" (sorry if I got that wrong, I forgot the name ). I ran by CD once more and everything worked, so I decided to finally install it next to my Vista. However, after installing it goes straight to the splash screen, and the freezing happens again. The screen where the keyboard and the person are not showing up so I have no idea how add the "nomodeset" and "noacpi". So my question is, how do I get to the screen where I can add both those things? Also, is there a way to add it permanently so I don't have to keep pressing F6?

Debian Programming :: Analyze Image Or Screen For Existence Of A Color

Jan 4, 2014

I have a problem for which I imagined a radical solution. Okay, I have a script that uses Alltray's "menu" feature as an interface. It's working greatly, EXCEPT sometimes lxpanel (the panel and tray of LXDE) has a hiccup and restarts, at which point the alltray menu is still running, but the icon is gone from the tray.

I want to somehow test the screen for the existence of a color, a color that is likely only to exist in the icon I've chosen for the chat menu. If the color exists on my screen, then the script can continue to do nothing, but if the color doesn't exist, then that means the alltray icon with my custom icon has disappeared, at which point I should have my bash script close the alltray process and start it again.

How to accomplish the checking of my screen for the existence of a particular color? To simplify, I already have simple screenshot scripts (scrot is good for it), so it would be fine if I could simply analyze an image.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Not Booting - Getting Black Screen With Copyright Notice Stays At Screen Forever

Nov 3, 2010

I downloaded Fedora-14-i686-Live-Desktop.iso and used the Fedora liveusb-creator to put this on a 2GB USB stick. Everything seemed to have gone well and it said complete; however, when I try to boot from the USB stick, I get a black screen with a linux copyright notice at the top and it just stays at that screen forever. I tried this on two computers with the same results.

I'd previously tried with Ubuntu and had a similar issue, it would go to a purple (if I remember correctly) Ubuntu screen and it sat that forever.

OpenSUSE Install :: Changing Font Color During Boot Screen - Not GRUB - Not KDM

Jan 24, 2010

I am testing some boot splash screens but the ones I like most are darker and therefore the black font color during boot, well, shows on dark grey or black background, so I can't see.

I would like to change the font color of the messages, but not the results (green=DONE, red=FAILED, etc., I don't want to change that, only the messages like "doing fast boot", "Loading CPUfreq", and all the ones loading stuff, mounting, etc.).

Apparently I need to edit /lib/lsb/init-functions?

I found a few examples on google, mostly for debian based and the ones I have seen are far more complex than the very simple one opensuse uses. So I am stuck here. 11.2 version.

Security :: Deleted File Stripes / Log Into A Passwd Less Acct?

Jul 2, 2010

I work for a seismic company that has recently experienced a security issue. Because we have an isolated network that is used for HPC work we have a very open security structue ie password less accounts rsh rlogin etc. We had, seemingly,a user that has maliciously deleted another user's files but I still haven't figured out how. So far I have been able to prove that this user has remotely logged into another host under that user's account... or at least that their workstation did. The /var/log/message file shows logins from their workstation as that user multiple times durring the times that these files were being deleted. There are wildcard searches for these files in the history in this host. There is a vi session initiated on this host for a file called delme (delete me) and then a chmod +x for this file. and then a deletion of this file (rm delme). Funny things: this user has no business in this acct. this user was bounced off the other host (permission denied) when trying to log into the other host and then as root logged into the other host as the other acct. repeatedly... ie. rsh -l xxx (permis den) then as root rsh -l xxx (logged in) why not su xxx and then rsh? password less acct?! why use root privs (which they sholuld not have) to log into a passwd less acct? Can't see any remote logins to their workstation from elsewhere. can't find smoking gun. no execution of delme script or any other rm /*/xxx/* sort of command that proves when file deletion of striped files happened?!

changing root passwd soon.need proof that no remote logins to a CentOS 5.3 workstation could be responsible.
Could mean someone gets fired.how can I be sure that no other users logged into this machine and then into another machine for sure?

Ubuntu :: Installing On 1 HDD And Booting Win 7 On Another?

Apr 25, 2011

I just downloaded Ubuntu no problem, and put it on a DVD just fine. I have 2 HDD in my computer, a 1.5TB (main drive, in slot SATA 0) and an 80GB (back up, in SATA 1). I intended on installing Ubuntu on the 80GB drive, and it seemed I did so just fine; I got to the end of the process perfectly. However, when I restart my computer to boot it up it just gives me a black screen with a white flashing underscore in the top left hand corner, kinda like a DOS screen. I also tried booting up from my 1.5TB drive, but another black screen said that it didn't exist, along with throwing me a code, which leads me to believe that I deleted my Win7 partition by mistake.
